WHAT HELPS WHAT HURTS
When you want to give up, tell your-
self you will hold on for just one
more day, hour, minute-whatever you
can manage.
Look on the bright side.
You are important to me. Your life is
important to me.
You have so much to live for-why do
you want to die?
IT TAKES A VILLAGE with a strong foundation and caring, determined leaders to reach out to individuals and families living with mental illness. YAMI (Yakima Alliance for the Mentally Ill) built that foundation and was chartered in 1981. We are so grateful to Wilmetta “Billie” Saldin and all the other caring family members who have actively participated over the years. The majority of these dedicated individuals have been parents who were
desperately looking for support for themselves and in doing so reached out to others who also needed support. We were a grassroots support group who listened to each other’s pain and frustration and were support for one another. We were all volunteers who, in order to provide a news bulletin and later Family to Family education, saved newspapers, recycled pop cans, manned rest stop coffee stands, yard sales, baked good sales and anything we could think of to raise money. We had vendor tables at every appropriate conference or convention. Many volunteer hours were accumulated. As time went by NAMI Yakima membership grew to over two hundred members. We were able to offer several support groups when United Way became aware of how many families were in need and how many lives we touched. Unfortunately, for a few years our leadership took a turn from our grass roots foundation. We lost contact with many of you. YOU ARE THE FAMILIES IN OUR VILLAGE. We need your membership donations. We need you to volunteer. We need you on our Board. The current office staff has done a great job in rebuilding NAMI Yakima. They are offering several support groups and reaching out to those in need. They cannot do it by themselves. They need you! Please call the office at 453-8229. We still care! June & Ted Cummings

The year is rushing by and some big strides have
been made in the legislation, view the latest
information at the Washington NAMI website
http://www.namiwa.org/ . As members of NAMI
Yakima you will be called on in the coming year
to govern your local affiliate. What does it mean
to govern an affiliate?
Well, much like we elect representatives to
represent the people of Washington, NAMI
Yakima members have elected a Board of
Directors. Your membership gives you voting power at our annual
organizational meetings and the authority to nominate. Board
members are nominated from the body of NAMI Yakima’s
membership.
In the coming months you will be asked to exercise your authority
by nominating candidates, which could be yourself, to the board
and showing up at the annual meeting in September to vote.
Your membership role is vital to the power and strength of your
NAMI Yakima and its impact on our community. Without you, the
power is subject to misuse and abuses that can often times leave an
organization in ashes.
If you are unsure what a good candidate for the Board of Directors
might look like, take a look at page 6 to see the NAMI Yakima
Bylaw definitions of the positions available.
As the President of the current Board of Directors it is my duty to
select what is called a nominating committee. You may have
recently received a call from June Cummings, a very long time
member, requesting your participation. If you have received this
call from June, or have not, I request that you consider being a part
of this committee, please contact the NAMI Yakima office (509)
453-8229 and express your interest to either Kellie Crabb or
Deanna Roy, two of the most awesome volunteers of our
organization.
Thank you for your ongoing membership with NAMI Yakima.
Please remember to share with others, that may face some similar
challenges with mental health, that NAMI Yakima is here for them
regardless of membership.
