I posed two questions last week, the first “What would I advise someone else with the same question?” The second is really at the heart of Ignat us’ “third time” of discernment: “Imagine myself on my death bed and ask what I would then have wished to have chosen?” Remember the question? Whether rationally it would be better to make myself happy by my choices or to do what I knew God would want. When I put the pros and cons down on paper, my initial impression was that I should choose the things that made me happy and forget about seminary; but when I put it in the light of what I would wish I had chosen on my death bed, the answer became truly and rationally obvious: do not choose to please myself but to please God. The result of my “third time” of discernment was to give it all up and go to Seminary despite the uncertainty that decision implied. Let me explain; when a young [or in my case older] man chooses to go to the seminary, they are not guaranteed success toward ordination. In fact the discernment process at the seminary is grueling and when one enters into formation every aspect of one’s life is under intense and constant scrutiny. Nobody likes being in formation, it is invasive and all too often painful. On more than one occasion during my time at the seminary I wondered “what on earth am I doing here?” But when I remembered that I was there not to please myself but to please God, I stayed on through completion. For me it was my time in the seminary that brought me to the “second time” of discernment. But notice, both the first time of discernment and the third involve clear rational thinking; but human beings are mostly not “clear and rational” in their approach to decisions – especially life decisions. The emotions must come into play, and that is the key to “second time” of discernment.

Hice dos preguntas la semana pasada, la primera “ Que consejo le daria a alguien con la misma pregunta? La segunda realmente es al corazón de Ignacio “tercer tiempo” de discernimiento. “Me imaginé en mi cama de moribundo y me pregunté que hubiera yo deseado de elegir? Acuerdense de la pregunta? Si racionalmente hubiera sido mejor hacerme feliz por mis selecciones o hacer lo que yo sabia que Dios queria. Cuando escribi los pros y cons en un papel, mi impresión inicial fué de elegir las cosas que me hacen feliz y olvidarme del seminario; pero cuando lo puse a la luz de lo que yo habia deseado elegir en mi cama de moribundo, la contestación se hizo verdadera y racionalmente obvia: No elijas a tu agrado pero elije para agradar a Dios. El resultado de mi “tercer tiempo” del discernimiento era de dejar todo e irme al Seminario a pesar de la incertidumbre que la decisión implicaba. Dejenme explicar: cuando un hombre joven (o en mi caso mayor) elije ir al seminario, ellos no tienen la garantia de éxito hacia la ordenación. De hecho, el proceso de discernimiento en el seminario es riguroso y cuando uno entra en formación todos los aspectos de su vida están bajo constante y de intensas averiguaciones. A nadie le gusta estar en formación, es muy invasiva y muy a menudo dolorosa. En más de una ocasión durante mi tiempo en el seminaro yo me preguntaba “Que estoy haciendo yo aqui?” Pero cuando recordaba que yo estaba alli

no para mi agrado pero para agradar a Dios, me quedé hasta completar mi tiempo. Para mi fué el tiempo que pasé en el seminario que me llevó al “Segundo tiempo” del discernimiento. Pero pongan atención, tanto el primer tiempo del discernimiento y el tercero requieren tener un pensamiento claro y racional; pero los seres humanos por costumbre no son “claros y racionales” en la manera como se acercan hacer decisiones—especialmente decisiones de la vida. Vacation Bible School Registration

VBS is scheduled for June 16th – 20th, 9:30 AM to 12 Noon, in the church hall. VBS is open to children entering K – 5th grade. Register at https://osv.groupvbspro.com/vbs/ez/IHMVBS, by Friday, June 13th. You can also pick up a registration form in the office. Space cannot be guaranteed if you do not pre-register. There is a $10 per child registration fee.

WE NEED VOLUNTEERS! VBS needs many volunteers to be successful. We are looking for adults and youth (especially teens!) who want to have a fun-filled week with our parish children. If you are interested, please contact Teresa Bustos at 240-1944, or at erbustos@pacbell.net.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL is in need of donations!! We are asking for donations for snack time and arts and crafts.
