• Although Americans tried to protect themselves, experts realized that for every person killed instantly by a nuclear blast, four more would later die from fallout, the radiation left over after the blast.

• Some families built fallout shelters in their backyards and stocked them with canned food.

1986 -- The Chernobyl disaster, was the worst nuclear power plant accident in history, resulting in a severe release of radioactivity into the environment following a massive power excursion which destroyed the reactor.

The Scenario:• Nuclear war has been declared. The only people that will survive the attack

must be inside the bomb shelter. Here is the problem. The bomb shelter only has space and supplies for 4 people. In order to survive, 4 people must stay inside the shelter for at least 3 months. At hand is the survival of humans on Earth. The repopulation of Earth will depend on the 4 people that survive,

The Task:• Your group is to decide, based on the information given, which people will be

allowed to remain (and live) and which people will be left out of the shelter (and die). Carefully evaluate all the information given. Consider their health, experience, age, gender, talents, intelligence, etc.

All decisions must be unanimous:• The majority does not rule. This means that every person being voted out must

agree to go (and die). Each group must decide for themselves the voting process. Some may do a “secret ballot”. Other groups may decide to vote openly. Each group member must give their reasons (validation) for wanting to stay. Consider what each person can contribute to life after the bomb.

Next:• On a separate sheet of paper, list the 7 people that will stay in the shelter.

Explain and give reasons why each person was allowed to stay in the shelter. Also, list the people that were chosen to leave and give reasons for this decision. Next, choose a leader for your group to present the decisions to the rest of the class.
