Three people were arrested March 10 for marijuana possession. According to police reports, a Lyndhurst juvenile was caught with Richard E. All three were charged with possession o f marijuana, possession o f marijuana with intent to distribute, possession with intent to distribute in a school zone and possession o f drug paraphema-

T he Democrat Party in North Arlington appears to be crumbling. After some successes in the mid 1990s the local

Democrats are disintegrating. Last week their only remaining elected official, Councilman Frank Caputo, jumped ship and decided to become a Republican. Caputo, who was elected two-and-a-half years ago as a Democrat, resigned from the party and criticized the Democrats for their negativity and their lack of constructive alternatives. He praised his Republican colleagues for acting in the best interest of the borough, not politics. That’s quite an about face for a man who campaigned alongside one of Democrats most ardent flame throwers, former Councilman Philip Renshaw.

Caputo will seek reelection this fall as a Republican and as such he will stand as a constant reminder of the local Democrats' failures and their inane, incredibly destructive method of campaigning. The local Democrats have still not figured out that letting their emotions and personal hatred for Mayor Leonard Kaiser

New signs are up at the Parkway toll plazas heralding the new EZ pass lanes and other lanes for exact change only and lanes where someone takes your money and gives a receipt.

EZ Pass was supposed increase traffic flow, but is showing signs it will just create longer backups at toll plazas. Why? Because to make room for the EZ Pass lanes the Parkway authority had to reduce the number of toll booth lanes available for people who want to use coins or tokens. So far the LZ Pass only lanes have been illogically placed in the middle of some toll plazas creating a hazardous condition for drivers who have to cut across traffic to find a coin operated lane. Granted, as more people opt for EZ Pass the lines at the coin only lanes may reduce somewhat, but not necessarily enough to reduce long delays or accidents at toll plazas.

When m y s is te r 's granddaughter Maureen to ld us last sum m er that she was going to jo in the Peace corps, I thought it w as ju st an a im less dream . How could such a beautiful recent co lleg e g rad u a te g iv e u p sev era l years o f her youthful pleasure to take care o f needy children.

W hen I received this letter from her I realized that she m ean t it. As a y o u n g s te r she b e c am e an E ag le Scout and her interest in the needy seem s to have carried over. I w ould like to share her letter w ith you.

Dear Aunt Charlotte,Remember last summer at the shore

when / told you about my experiences with young student under achievers; my assignment in San Francisco with Americorps? Well here is my prom ised letter about my next adventure.

The Peace Corps has always been an inner calling o f mine. My early beginnings have roots in community service, and / remember a special speaker from one o f my early Girl Scout meetings. She was a parent who had served in the Peace Corps in Kenya. She had met her husband there, and was so inspired she named her daughter Kendra. Som ething about living abroad in an exotic world filled with unknowns, helping others struck a chord in me. This was to he the seed that would later develop into the greatest adventure o f

my life.My assignment is to serve fo r 27

months in Costa Rica. / will work with the children, youth, and fam ilies at risk project. / will be in the last training group to serve in the peace Corps in Costa Rica. My job is to empower youth, prevent debilitating and negative behaviors, fin d resources fo r youth at risk, and inspire and educate the people living back home.

What makes the Peace Corps such a tough assignment is / am required to he fluent in the language o f the host country. / must live in a marginal community, which means no hot water, possibly no private bedroom, and not living in the nicest o f neighborhoods My paychecks will be next to nothing, as / will be trading in American luxuries fo r an experience o f a lifetime.

This is the first o f what / hope to he a chronicle o f my experiences serving in the Peace C 'orps. / am scheduled to depart in less than a week, and / am not scared, nervous, or anxious. In fact, the only fears / have concern with, is the fac t these experiences will likely change my life.

As / say good bye to all / have known, to all that shaped me, / am excited to see what this new world has to teach me. Therefore, the adventure o f a thousand miles will begin with this single Ktep.

W hen w e reached the d riv ing age som etim es a car w as furnished by the parents i f the person involved had a jo b and had to ge t places to d o his work. It w as usually a used car very often called a Jalopy because o f its age. ju st good enough to assist the youngster w ith h is w ork.

N ow very o ften a student w ill receive a new c a r as a high school graduation present.

M y paren ts w ould laugh at such a s ituation , partly because they could never give a car, could not afford it and a new one at that.

My parents believed that i f you went to high school o r co llege it was your jo b to g raduate in the required time. There w as n o g ift for doing what you w ere supposed to do. There were no rew ards for passing in the grades, for graduation from high school o r col lege, except m aybe a pat on the back and a w ord o f p raise for accom plish ing our purpose.

We w ere never scolded for not getting the m ark they expected o f us. My father w ould say: "D id you try as hard as you cou ld to get a desired m ark?” If the answ er was yes then “ I am satisfied." he said. He alw ays realized that

W e like to th ink o f days gone by as the good old days. W e like to believe that they w ere better than now . I th ink that w e did the same th in g s th en as w e d o n ow in a sligh tly d iffe ren t w ay. Skirts are shorte r than they w ere years ago. N ow it is the m ini skirt that hardly looks like a skirt at all. But when we w ere tea c h in g sk ir ts w ere short enough for a m em ber o f the Board o f Education to com plain about the short length o f the skirls teachers wore. His com m ents m ade h eadlines and the story w as heard all over the country , distributed by the A ssociated Press.

Now you d ress according to the m ood. Som e days it is a short dress and o ther days floor length very o ften slacks, especially in winter.

I rem em ber w hen w e wore long d resses w e m ad e o u rse lv e s . We bought jersey that cam e in tubes, ju s t enough to fit a person. W e did not have to put sides on the dress

because it was tubular. We bought enough m aterial to reach from the neck to the feet, put on small hem. cu t o u t arm holes and neck, sewed th em and p resto ! w e had a floor length dress. You could have one in every color. They were so easy to m ake and jersey was cheap. That style d id not last long. Actually they were not the m ost a ttractive dresses but because it was stylish everyone had to have one o r m ore.

There was a tim e when everything had to m atch . If you had a pink dress y o u had to have pink shoes. If it was lavender the shoes and pocketbook had to m atch too. You w ould never be ca u g h t w ith brow n shoes and- b lack handbag o r blue shoes with black bag. Even jew elry had to match costum e jew e lry . I mean. I hat is net so now. N othing has to match. V ari- e ty is the style.

W hen I want to Europe the first time I carried a small bag with costume jew - elry to match each outfit. I he extra heavy bag becam e very cumbersome and I com plained about it to my friend Ange. w ith whom we were traveling H er answ er was. “ W hat are you doing w ith all that junk jew elry. It is silly to carry jewelry in any case. The only jew elry to take on a trip is what you can have on. a good ring or pin." That taugh t me a lesson to travel light, even with jew elry. It eventually m ade m e dislike inexpensive costum e jew elry.

I was greatly surprised years ago w hen a friend told m e she was having broadloom rugs installed all over

h e r h o u 's e . I c o u l d n o t believe she w a s p u t t i n g i t in h e r b a t h r o o m and k i t c h e n t o o b u t s h e a s s u r e d m e she w a s d o i n g j u s t t h a t . H o w c o u l d you k e e p w a te r f r o m fa l l in g o n e i t h e r room or fo o d in t h e k i t c h e n . S h e s a id it was not a p r o b l e m N ow everyone has whole ho u ses covered w ith bruao- lo o m .
