1. ICT for carbon footprint reduction

Framework

� One of PT’s goals is to acquire sustainability along the value chain;

� Rationalize the carbon footprint and contribute for the rationalization of its client’s carbon footprint

is another goal to achieve during the current triennium;

�More than ever, energy consumption is a very important matter for companies and families, either

because of its cost or for its carbon footprint.

Concept

� Develop services and solutions that allow costumers to wisely manage their energetic consumption

leading at the same time to budget and carbon footprint saves;leading at the same time to budget and carbon footprint saves;

� Incorporate “Green IT” solutions in PT’s commercial offer.

Objectives

� Create, develop, test, promote and trade a communication solution that will lead to 20% to 40%

families' electric energy consumption savings;

� This solution is based on an equipment and interactive service associated to the PT’s triple play offer

– MEO – , and will highlight the client’s domestic energy spending as well as the areas prone to greater

savings;

� The solution presented is MEO Energy.

2. MEO Energy – What is it?

MEO Energy is a new service, based on an equipment that connects to the electric board and allows the

display of domestic electric consumption on TV – Interactive MEO – providing information's on:

�Energy consumption in a choice of time periods;

� Cost forecast, depending on previous consumptions;

� What is the best price plan, taking into consideration the domestic electric consumption profile.

With MEO Energy the client can adopt the best domestic energy saving practices:

�Saving on consumptions and waste reduction;

�Acknowledging and controlling electric consumptions, without comfort prejudice;�Acknowledging and controlling electric consumptions, without comfort prejudice;

�Choosing the electric power and price plan most suitable for the client;

�Following the advice and recommendation on energy savings.

3. MEO Energy – Solution characteristics

The solution consists of:

An electric current meter, with a wireless transmitter, placed

on the electric board;

A data collection advice that connects to the client’s MEO

Router;

A digital LCD screen, to have immediate consumption

visualization.

After installing the equipment, the client has to

register at www.meo.pt/energy

Name and address where the equipment is installed;

E-mail address;

Electric power and price plan contracted with electric

energy the supplier;

The equipment identifier (ID).

For each time period, it is possible to see:

�The consumption in Euros;

�The consumption in kWh;

�The matching carbon footprint.

6.MEO Energy – Managing the domestic budget

The client has access to a comparative chart that

displays for the different time periods (day, week,

month and year):1- Current consumption values;

2- Values for the previously assessed consumptions;

3- Linear forecast for the consumption expected until the

end of each time period.

The Price Plan tool allows the client to simulate a

7.MEO Energy – Identify areas with potential for consumption reduction

MEO Energy has a variety of recommendations for domestic electric

consumption reduction, with the corresponding carbon footprint saving.

8.MEO Energy – a Family’s Testimony

Characteristics

T2 on the city's outskirts.

Main household appliances:

Oven, ceramic hob, microwaves, coffee maker, fridge, 2 TVs with MEO Service, electric

heating, washing machine / tumble dryer, dishwasher, 2 laptops, DVD player.

Using MEO Energy

This service helped the family to optimize consumption behaviour. Gradually, they started to:

� Make a better use of the washing machine, tumble dryer and dishwasher, using these only

when full and in shorter and lower temperature programmes;

� Set the fridge to suitable temperature and avoid placing hot food inside;

� Defrost food at room temperature, avoiding microwave use and for this…

� Cook larger amounts of food at the same time, to be consumed in more than one day, for

example soup, being reheated later;

� Make a better use of the oven;

� Use the microwaves to warm the baby’s milk instead of the kettle or the ceramic hob;

� During summertime open windows more often to make the air flow, avoiding an abusive

use of the air-conditioning system; �Turn of the lights every time a room is empty;

�Only warm room divisions when people are there and it is actually needed;

�Unplug all appliances with stand by that are not being used recurrently;

�Change the illumination to energy saving light bulbs and maximize solar lightning use.

10.MEO Energy – Outcomes

In the months previous to MEO Energy installation, the

average consumption was 210 kWh/month. Currently the

family only consumes 135 kWh/month (-36%).
