FamousLauren Weisberger wrote a book called Everyone Worth Knowing. Now, I’ve never actually read the book, but I can venture a guess as to who those types of people might be; PR executives, club owners, clothing boutique owners… you know the types - the people that make life just that little bit more comfortable by providing free tickets to events, clothing discounts, even job opportunities. My boyfriend happens to be Perth producer/DJ, Shazam aka Cameron Parkin. With an enviable slew of festival and club shows already under his belt, a vast plethora of remixes and original songs in his repertoire, and having played alongside major acts like the Chemical Brothers, Goldfrapp, Soulwax and Dizzee Rascal, it was only a natural progression when the time came for a complete national festival tour. And what better tour to be a part of than Parklife, the first music festival of the season and arguably the best in its category in comparison to some of its weaker counterparts. He ever-so-graciously insisted on taking me along for the ride, officially becoming the king of people ‘worth knowing’. The tour kicked off in Perth. Upon entering the backstage area - a conglomerate of trailers based around the central point of the dining and sitting area - we silently braced ourselves for the next two weeks. When it came time for Shazam to play, a driver and buggy arrived to take us the short 200 metre distance to the water stage. Ah, there’s nothing like a completely unnecessary (but welcome, nonetheless) buggy ride to reassure you of your place in society. The day went by pretty quickly. I guess that’s what happens when you don’t spend hours waiting in queues for drinks or toilets and searching for friends without phone reception. Backstage was always a hive of activity, and when 10 pm rolled around, mini vans were waiting to take us back to the Hyatt where the issue of making an appearance at an after party was debated. It was here I learned that, nine times out of ten, no one goes to the after party. The exception to this rule is if they are expected to play. But otherwise, artists and crew alike gather in the not-so-humble hotel lobby for a few quiet post-show drinks and a plate of food. Was I was expecting crazy party antics, groupies walking past linking arms with Busy P, the open use of drugs and narcotics? Well, yes. But it turns out everyone is just a little more responsible these days, and when an 8 am call for a 9.30 am flight is in the back of your mind, there isn’t much persuading you to go all out - well, at least not on the first night.

Fuzzy treats its artists the way a mother cares for her newborn child, although in this case the newborn comes with seven suitcases and an entourage of six. The finest hotels were, of course, de rigueur in each city. Who needs one showerhead when you can have three, strategically placed at different angles to ensure optimum water dispersion? Each hotel was luxurious, the lobbies always happening; people coming and going, shuttles on stand-by to take us wherever we pleased. When we had to go to ‘site’ we were taken by idle shuttles waiting outside reception. Arriving at Melbourne Parklife was a truly frightening experience. Oh Melbourne, you may have been the most fashion savvy city of the tour but your appeal was seriously tarnished by the swarms of aggressive fence jumpers. Hundreds of them scaled the perimeter of the venue, staying together in one huge mass, looking for weak spots in the barrier. We waited with The Rapture while security cleared the backstage arrival gate. Melbourne also had the largest groupie presence backstage. Typically, the female groupie is young, quite possibly a model, sporting several Access All Areas lanyards around her neck. “I collect them”, one girl explained. The female groupies, whilst lacking originality and generally being easy to spot with their long manes and cut offs, are relatively harmless. The male groupies, however, quite often pass as artists themselves. They are overly friendly and overly confident. Typically decked out in Ksubi oversized tees, they buzz around like pests - albeit friendly pests - asking inane questions to anyone they recognise and exclaiming how “dope” their remixes are.The question most commonly dropped: “what equipment do you use?” got old, fast. You could see the longing in their eyes, the insatiable hunger to be a part of the ‘Elite Boys Club’ that dominated the tour. The look of smug satisfaction plastered on their faces if they made it to the Holy Grail – being able to stand in close proximity to someone playing their set - was a little embarrassing to watch. The catering was one of the highlights of the tour. I reflected on experiences of culinary festival fare in the past, pitying the general public who were forced to sustain their hunger with greasy hot chips and over processed hot dogs… but then my concentration returned to the plate of grilled Spanish mackerel atop potato rosti and asparagus and brocollini salad sitting in front of me. I wondered how I would ever have room in my stomach for the tiramisu or berry cheesecake that was calling my name, especially after snacking on brie and camembert

and baskets of fresh bread rolls. Lamb shanks, Wagyu beef burgers, tagliatelle with prawns, salad and dessert bars… Thank you Fuzzy, but I will never touch festival food again. Another highlight was the morning shuttle buses from the hotel to the airport. Groupie tales from the night before were exchanged with complete nonchalance, with labels such as “smelly perfume girl” and “that one in the sparkly top”, being used in place of first names. One morning the radio was playing loudly and the sound of Lady Sovereign’s So Human filled the bus. Lady Sovereign smiled shyly, but her innocent sense of pride was cut short when a loud voice exclaimed “I f*cking hate this song!” Poor Sov. The Sydney venue was huge, and buggies were in short supply. The crowd was the definition of ‘mixed bag’, and probably the least responsive to Cam’s set. Brisbane, Perth and Melbourne really lapped up Cam’s eclectic blend of glitchy electro, but it seemed that Sydney preferred the bass heavy commercial house of the Stafford Brothers and Timmy Trumpet.

Arriving at Melbourne Parklife was a truly frightening experience. Oh Melbourne, you may have been the most fashion savvy city of the tour but your appeal was seriously tarnished by the swarms of aggressive fence jumpers

There was a fair bit of after party action in Sydney. I had the pleasure of meeting the ‘Australian girlfriend’ of a well-known French DJ. And, no that doesn’t narrow it down as much as you’d think. By Australian girlfriend, I am not referring to her heritage, but her zoning, if you will. She fulfilled his girlfriend ‘duties’ whenever he happened to be in Australia. I’m not exactly sure if he and his French girlfriend - yes, there is one - have a mutual understanding of sorts, but apparently this is common on the touring scene. Busy P, Joakim, Vito and Stephan from Aeroplane, and Cam and myself decided to walk to a different after party located at the Oxford Arts Factory, but Tiga pulled up in a Lexus SUV and saved the day. The after party at the Oxford Arts Factory had been shut down when an unruly thug ran over a female police officer. Not to dwell, we relocated to Hugo’s where a quiet drink was had with Luke Steele, various Modular crew, and an annoyingly pretentious crowd. It was hard not to pity the Qantas Group Bookings clerks as each morning they attempted to check in 45 hungover artists and crew, their entourage and an abundance of luggage. Looking around the boarding lounge at the artists clinging to their red bulls and hiding the dark circles under their eyes with their sunglasses, it all seemed very Diva-esque. Which brings me to my next point - riders. I wanted to hear of outrageous demands, instead most riders were reasonable. The most common request? Pairs of socks. Busy P requested a postcard and stamp from each city to send home to Paris. Obligatory bottles of Moet and Veuve, fresh fruit, chocolate and cheese were fairly commonplace. The Grey Goose Cam requested was always accompanied by an assortment of vitamin waters and mixers, bowls of fresh lime, soda water, and a seemingly endless supply of beer. The end of tour party was held in a private Adelaide bar, with Fuzzy putting a limitless drink tab on the bar. As everyone partied for the last time, numbers and emails were exchanged. Everyone was in high spirits, even the consistently blank faced Alice Glass of Crystal Castles. The whole experience was so surreal we wondered how we would ever go back to reality. A Jet Star flight back to Perth was all it took.
