Welcome! We are very pleased to introducethe first issue of The Raider Press, our very ownDerby High School newspaper. The history of our country's news is rich andlong. The first American newspaper appeared inBoston in 1690, entitled Publick Occurrences.Published without authority, it was immediatelysuppressed, its publisher arrested, and all cop-ies destroyed. In fact, it remained forgottenuntil 1845 when the only known surviving ex-ample was discovered in the British Library. Thefirst successful newspaper was the BostonNews-Letter, in t704. Two more papers madetheir appearance in the t72O's, in Philadelphiaand New York. By the start of the RevolutionaryWar, overtwo dozen papers issued from all thecolonies. The industrial revolution dramatically af-fected newspapers. The numbers of papers andtheir paid circulations continued to rise. The1850 census catalogued 2,526 titles. Power-ful, giant presses appeared, able to print tenthousand complete papers per hour. At thistime the first "pictorial" newspapers began; theyfeatured illustrations of events in the news, aswoodcut engravings made from correspond-ents'sketches or taken from a new invention:the photograph.During the Civil War the unprecedenteddemand for timely, accurate news reporling

WELCOME TO THE RAIDER PRESS!reporti ng tra nsformed America n jou rna I ism intoa dynamic, hard hittingforce in national life. Many accounts of battles turned in by early re-porters remain today as the definitive historiesof their subjects.Newspaper growth continued throughoutthe postwar years. An amazing 11-,31.4 differentpapers were recorded in the 1880 census. Bythe 1890's the first circulation of a million cop-ies per issue was recorded. Features of the mod-ern newspaper appeared, bold "banner" head-lines, use of illustrations, the introduction ofcomics (called "funny pages") and dedicatedcoverage of organized sporting events. Our planet now inhabits 188 countries, 5 billionpeople, and millions of stories . In our time, ra-dio, television and the World Wide Web havegradually replaced newspapers as the nation'sprimary information sources, so it may be diffi-cult to appreciate the role that newspapers haveplayed in our history and continues to play. How-ever, the importance of the written news shouldnever be underestimated. The purpose of news-papers is to communicate what is newsworlhy, inform the community of events and happen-ings, enlighten the reader to varied perspectives, and entertain where space allows. A newspaperdedicated to unbiased reporling provides a pow-erful voice for its readership, its community -

UToERGRoUND MUSIBY SAMANTHA Foalsis a guaranteed sensation thatwill get your body moving withgreat velocity.Foals most recent album"Total Life Forever" has amore progressive outlook. Ontrack 5, "Spanish Sahara" hasa fine introduction with lighttaps and occasional drags ofthe guitar. The song picks upas it goes on and towards theend, you feel as if you are lis-tening to a completely differ-ent song, yet it seems to inter-twine perfectly. As the bub-bling synth and furious drumsclash, it brings the listener toa peak, as if they have grad-

uadually come to a realizationof something throughout thesong. Suddenly, after all of thecommotion, the song calmsdown once again as it comesto a close with just a singleechoing synth note. AlthoughFoals resides in the U.K., theirsongs are available to every-one on iTunes. So in order toobtain a true sanctuary, down-load the Foals album of yourchoice, sit back in any placethat brings you comforl, andabsorb a sensation that youare momentarily unaware iexists.

E:MI TnLLERAre you looking for true musicalexcellence? Then it may be a goodidea for you to turn off the radio andtune into this arlicle. Sometimes itis necessary to explore beyond thepop music scenethat plays on everystation on a daily basis; possiblyexploring all the way to the UnitedKingdom. Foals rs an alternativerock group of England consisting ofthe self-sufficient mastermindsYannis, Edwin, Jimmy, Walter, andJack. Although each member wentto college, only guitarist, JimmySmith, stayed long enough to re-ceive his degree from Hull Universi-ty. The rest collectively decided todiscontinue their English courseswhen Foals was signed to Trans-

gressive Records in 2007.Their first album "Antidotes"released in March of 2008 has acollection of grooving strings, along with sets of psychedelicbrass outbursts. At one moment, such as in the track "Heavy Wa-ter" of the Antidotes album, theritualistic beat of the drums andthe sharp, lush style of thestrings will make you want tosway with your arms extending tothe sky. Then suddenly, the songswitches tactics by transformingthe strings into a brass ensem-ble with a lazzy feel. Never has asaxophone, trombone, and trum-pet appealed to me so greatly. lt

She had a definitive senseof style and most of her fabricscontained a palette of blacks,

whites, and some shades ofbeige. She had a very inno-vative mind that inspiredthe hearts of many to bebold and to stand out.Coco once said,"Elegance is not the prerog-ative of those who have justescaped from adolescence, but of those who have tak-en possession of their fu-ture. "
