Agapito Chavez is on a mission and a very good one. He’s the Coalition Coordinator for Impact Cedar Hill and he’s focusing attention on getting legal and illegal drugs off the streets.Impact Cedar Hill is a Drug and Alcohol Prevention program in the City of Cedar Hill TX, but if Agapito has his wishes, the program will expand and he will work with other organizations to combat the drug problem.On September 27, 2014 Impact Cedar Hill will be holding a Prescription Take Back Event at Walgreens, 501 E. Belt Line Road in Cedar Hill, from 10a.m. to 2p.m. The DEA, Police Department, Walgreens and The City of Cedar Hill are involved in the prevention of Drug and Alcohol Abuse and officers will collect unused and expired prescription and over-the-counter pills & liquid medications for appropriate disposal but they can’t accept inhalers or injection supplies.Don’t worry about anyone arresting you or asking questions. Come out, drop off the drugs, get information and learn how you can join the war against drugs.Check out Impact Cedar Hill’s Facebook page and you’ll see so much information about prescription drugs and the devastation that is occurring to

youth who get their hands on the wrong drugs. There’s also the adults who abuse prescription drugs. I know of two highly addictive drugs that are supposed to help patients but end up being a problem for many. I’ve seen first-hand the damage these two drugs, which are supposed to relieve pain, but have ended up ruining lives.

Sure, we’re told to take our prescriptions until we have completed the entire dose; however many stop as soon as whatever symptom they have goes away.

We’re also told to not share our prescriptions, but we all know someone who has either asked for or offered a pill to someone whose name was not on the bottle.

This is not good!Go to your medicine cabinet right now!Do you have expired prescriptions, unfinished doses for any type of medications, even those over-the-counter? If so, and I bet you do, gather them all up and plan to join me and Agapito.We have to be proactive about addressing the ills effecting our communities. Don’t wait for an accident to

The number of senior citizens in our country is growing faster than at any other time in our history. They are living longer lives, and many are in need of physical and mental healthcare that will be provided, in many instances, by members of their families.

Data from the 2010 U.S. Census stated that the growth of older persons outpaced that of young people. According to the Census, one of every five persons in our society today is beyond 50 years of age.

It is predicated that in 16 years, one of every five people in our country will be 65 years or older. With longevity comes health issues, and often younger people are finding themselves having to care for aging parents or grandparents, while holding down full-time jobs, and raising their own families.

There are a number government programs and agencies that can be very helpful to the aged, and to those who are caring for them. The United States Administration on Aging, for instance, provides information on resources for elderly persons that include at home services, legal issues regarding the elderly and care-giving options.

A web site, NIHSeniorHealth.gov, contains information on various diseases, and disorders that can affect elderly persons. Available in written and audio forms, the information is compiled by the National Institutes of Health and the National Library of Medicine.The site Medicare.gov lists nursing centers as well as long-term care payment options and information on various drug usage plans.

The Medicare site is interactive, and easy to navigate.

The National Center for Assisted Living is a perfect tool for those who are faced with having to place a loved one in an institutional facility. It outlines costs, dietary provisions, payment methods and social activities offered by various residential facilities.

As a part of the historic “great society” mandate, former President Lyndon Baines Johnson signed the Older Americans Act of 1965. The administration recognized that the population was aging, and needed assistance.

In 2000, the federal government established The National Family Caregiver Support Program. The program provided grant funding to state governments, allowing them to assist caregivers

who were caring for aging family members that lived with them.

The emotional and physical toll on caregivers can be tremendous. The more knowledge a caregiver has about government programs, and other services that are available to assist in the care of a loved one, the fewer mental and financial pressures they will endure.

For instance, if an elderly parent’s social security benefits are extremely low, the caregiver might be able to access additional funding through the Social Security Department’s Supplemental Income Program, known as SSI.

Also, since many elderly patients are taking numerous prescription drugs, caregivers should become familiar with the Food and Drug Administration’s web site which contains information on drug ingredients, drug interactions, and recommended dosages for prescription medications.

Seniors have worked very hard to create a society in which we are able to live and proper. In their golden years we must be there for them, just as they were there while they were actively working and laying the foundation for today’s society, and its quality standard of living.

Clay Jenkins is a man that many consider one of the most spiritual and conscientious people around.

He is the kind of Christian politician who will lie down his life if he believes it's necessary. Just ask the kids from the recent border controversy.

If you are apolitical by nature or by choice, there's one thing you need to know. There is a stark difference between the Democrats and the Republicans in this era of American life, but it’s simple.

Republicans go for blame and for blood, and Democrats want to be blameless and bloodless.

There was a sharp verbal exchange this week. County Judge Clay Jenkins, a Democrat and the lone Republican Commissioner Mike Cantrell had a major war of words.

Jenkins won it resoundingly with a bomb of truth.

According to the Dallas Morning News; “In dueling news conferences after the commissioners’ weekly meeting, Commissioner Mike Cantrell and County Judge Clay Jenkins provided the court’s most intense and most acrimonious public discussion of Price (Commissioner John Wiley Price) since he was indicted last month.”

The rancor started when Cantrell, the only Republican commissioner, read a resolution seeking the temporary removal of Price.

It was met with silence from the other commissioners.

Jenkins banged his gavel and declared Cantrell’s resolution dead.

Later, as people filed out of the meeting room, Jenkins and Cantrell expressed skepticism about one another’s motives.

Jenkins said Cantrell was “Price’s closest behind-the-scenes ally in 20 years” and questioned whether Cantrell

knew of any wrongdoing by Price.

“Commissioners Cantrell and Price … are the only remaining court members who

served from 2004 to 2010, when almost all of the alleged illegal activity occurred,” Jenkins said.

In addition to working closely together on fiscal issues, Price and Cantrell co-chaired an information technology committee during a time in which Price is alleged to have

illegally influenced multiple IT contracts.

“If Commissioner Cantrell is in possession of evidence of misconduct not publicly known, he has a duty to disclose it and act,” Jenkins said.

Cantrell shook his head vehemently as Jenkins spoke.

Jenkins essentially called the

move by Cantrell a political farce.

But neither he nor the other Commissioners were surprised by Cantrell’s action.

Republicans always find someone to blame and then they go for blood.

Cantrell, who is a dutiful Commissioner and has been in lockstep with Price throughout his stay on the court, felt compelled to offer his resolution because the “red meat” Republicans of Dallas County would accept no less.

They always want to see a hangin’ and nothing makes a more lasting impression than stringin’ up a sassy Negro like Price.

Judge Jenkins summed up the fact that Cantrell has sat in on all of the same contract negotiations of the County’s IT department that Price is alleged to have mishandled.

So if Cantrell had something to say, why didn’t he say it before now?

What bothers many who have long memories and political recall is that Price was key in the recent redistricting efforts that provided life to Cantrell’s re-election.

Price can almost singlehandedly take credit for the court swinging from a 4-1 Republican domination to the 4-1 advantage that Democrats now control, and for Cantrell as well.

Jenkins may not always get things right with the critics, but he always does what’s right in his heart and that’s what matters.

Good governance is not about blaming and going for blood.

Republicans are wrong. But Democrats err because they want to be blameless and fight a war where no blood is spilled.

Politics like Christianity is always about the blood. Jenkins understands both well.

Dr. Wanton was born in Thunderbolt, Georgia, on June 6, 1935, to the late Lillie and Willie Curry. She was the youngest of six siblings with two surviving. She was educated in the public schools of Savannah, Georgia, and New York City, where she graduated from Seward Park High School. She was preceded in death by her husband

of many years, Albert E. Wanton, a fellow educator and former principal of schools in Leon and Gadsden counties.

She received a BS degree with honors in Spanish; the MA and PhD degrees in Spanish language and literature from International University in Mexico and Spain; a second PhD in Educational Leadership from Florida State University; and completed further studies at Harvard University.

In 1964, Dr. Wanton began a long career at Florida A & M University. She began as a Spanish instructor and held many administrative positions, including becoming the founding Dean of the School of General Studies; Vice President of Academic Affairs for International Studies and Special Assistant to the University President.

Dr. Wanton was a member of Bethel Missionary Baptist Church where she served on the Mothers Board, founded, and directed AfriCare Ministries.

Also, she held membership in several organizations, including Charmettes, Inc., Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Jack and Jill of America, Inc., The Red Hatters and was on the Board of Directors for the Tallahassee Urban League.

Survivors who will forever cherish her memory and legacy are 3 loving daughters: Jacquelynne Maxey(Rick) of Lakeland, Florida; Michelle Jones and Dwanna Jacobs (Maurice) of Tallahassee, Florida; one deceased daughter, Debra Mitchell (Larry); one adoring sister and caregiver, Minister Sara Garcia of Tallahassee, Florida and New York City; one brother, Samuel Curry (Ruthetta) of New York City; one beloved son, Vandon R. Jones,Jr.; one sister-in-law, Dorothy Wanton of Miami, Florida; nine granddaughters and one great granddaughter; nieces, nephews, godchildren, and extended family and dear friends.

It was an emotional gathering in an overflowing room at Dallas’ Friendship-West Baptist Church as Senior Pastor Frederick D. Haynes III called for justice and Kametra Barbour recounted her encounter with Forney Police officers.

On August 9, 2014, Mrs. Barbour, who lives in Forney, was coming from grocery shopping with her two children and two Godchildren when officers signaled for her to pull over.

According to reports, police were supposed to be looking for a “tan or gold Toyota Corolla or Camry.” In a call to 911, a citizen reported that said vehicle was occupied by four black men.

Mrs. Barbour drives a burgundy Maxima.

Still Mrs. Barbour was ordered from her car, handcuffed and interrogated.

“They didn’t even read me my rights, “ she said.

Additionally her six-year-old son was ordered to get out of the car and to walk toward the police car.

The young man dutifully emerged and followed his mother’s lead by raising his hands in the air as he walked toward the officers.

Next you see two police officers approaching the vehicle, one with his firearm still drawn, although they had been ordered to put their weapons away.

Can you even begin to imagine how the three nine-

year-old girls felt as they watched the events unfold?

And yes, the officers did search the car and ask the girls questions while Mrs. Barbour explained what she and her family members were doing out that evening. You could hear her crying in the background.

Watching the video of young Ryan walking with his hands raised evoked many responses and emotions from those in the room.

At that moment, for me, Ryan was every black male who has ever been detained, beaten, arrested, tarred, feathered,

lynched, castrated, falsely accused, set-up, wrongfully convicted, profiled, assassinated or denied his rights.

Just as I will never forget Emmett Till’s face (before and after), the look on Ryan’s terrified face has left an indelible mark on my brain.

Well it appears, finally Forney police offers found a clue, or they eventually listened to the dispatcher who told them they had the wrong vehicle.

That doesn’t help the situation at all in the eyes of many.

James Hill II, president of the International Association of Black Professional Fire Fighters, called the behavior of the officers inappropriate.

“It was easy to see that the occupants of the car did not fit the description of the people they were looking for, yet they continued their uncalled for insulting behavior,” he said, adding, “because that is what they are trained to do, when it is a matter of race.”

He called the incident an “indictment on our law enforcement community.”

Pastor Haynes, who remains on top of the issues, called for justice, asking that Forney Police Department begin racial sensitivity training, have a civilian review board to investigate police misconduct, and recruit and retain African American Police Officers.

“We don’t want a hollow apology,” said Dr. Haynes, adding that the scene could have been out of a reality series called, “Cops Gone Wild.”

“Ironically it was the Forney police who stopped George Zimmerman (man who killed the Florida unarmed teen Trayvon Martin) and took a selfie.”

Decrying the lack of diversity on the police department, Dr. Haynes pointed out that the incident happened on the same day as Michael Brown was murdered by a police officer in Ferguson, MO.

Atty. Russell Wilson, from Dallas District Attorney Craig Watkins’ office, talked about recent efforts to restore trust. He reiterated information that DA Watkins shared during a town hall meeting recently with Dallas County Sheriff Lupe Valdez and Dallas Police Chief David Brown at St. Paul United Methodist Church.

Mr. Wilson said the focus has been on having body cameras on police officers, including sensitivity training and supporting civilian review board reform.

Listening to Ryan’s mother, and father, Chris (who interestingly is a first responder), tell how their children have been traumatized is enough to bring tears to your eyes along with varying thoughts.

Mr. Barbour, who is a fire fighter, said his household has always been one “that respected the police.”

Instead, he continued, now there’s a level of insecurity that exists.The incident has affected the children adversely, resulting in a number of issues. The vomiting, nervousness, fear and uncertainty are just a few of the side effects.

“They cried all the way home,” said Mrs. Barbour. “They still cry!”

As the protector of his home, Mr. Barbour says the incident “sickens me to my stomach.”

Clearly the family has been traumatized by the incident.

The comedy of errors has everyone involved asking why police officers couldn’t immediately see that they had the wrong car.

“Is burgundy the new tan,” asked Mr. Barbour, adding that if his six-year-old could discern the difference in car colors, why couldn’t the police?

The City of Forney really could diversify its force, but what good will that do if you still have the same renegade, rogue cops running wild and leaning on their shields to ensure a code of silence that further terrorizes a community?

Will the police officers involved get a slap on the wrist?

The city of Forney won’t get off that easy.

Now Forney is in the

national spotlight once again and not this time because of one of its most celebrated children, Dallas County Commissioner John Wiley Price, who is known for fighting against injustices.

“The more things change, the more they remain the same,” said Mr. Price, who grew up in Forney, as he added that what will be interesting to him is how Forney responds. “Now I

want to see what Forney is going to do...that speaks volumes!”

To date, Mrs. Barbaour said she has not talked to Forney Police Chief Rick Barnes, but she did receive a message, prior to the Labor Day holiday.

At the press conference there were citizens of Forney who there to show support for the Barbours and to share their “horror” stories.

Change is what is needed, said Pastor Thomas Fitzgerald, of Eastside Church of Christ in Forney, who said that he has been the victim of and witnessed harassment by the Forney police.

As he told of instances when he has been followed and stopped by police officers, Rev. Fitzgerald offered support to “bring about change.”

Mr. Barbour said he thought at six, his son was not old enough to have “THE TALK” about racism and being a black man in America.

Now he’s having to answer a lot of questions because Ryan has been taught to do the right thing and that by doing so, you won’t get into any trouble.

You can bet that parents will be having THE TALK with their children and Ryan Barbour joins the list of men and boys who have been wronged by a racist system.

While Ryan comfortable world has been invaded, this

incident will probably serve as the springboard, the launching pad, for one of the most prolific and vigilant warriors of his time.

His parents don’t think he will forget that tragic night that could have ended far worse than it did and I hope he doesn’t because he will grow into a man who will bring about change.

He may be the next Dr. Martin Luther King!

In the meantime. Forney get ready.

The best way to avoid another travesty is to do the right thing and if that involves litigation, which it appears so, well then there should be crowded courtrooms to ensure that everyone does the right thing.

Atty. Ray Jackson, representing the family, said a lawsuit will be filed.

Sometimes you have to hurt people in their pocketbook to get them to do the right thing.

Hopefully eyes will remain on Forney and changes will be made.

Forever is more than a State of Mind By James A. Washington

I suppose if we’re all honest with ourselves, life is something that we take for granted most of the time. But when you stop and think about it, it is the one thing in our eternal existence that we easily relate to. From birth to death, our eyes are open. Our minds are active and our time, as we know it, is running out. I can’t remember the name of the movie, but the line was, from the moment you’re born you begin to die. Life in these terms is a finite thing. It lasts for an exact period of time. Now that’s life as we know it. However, to consider yourself an eternal being can be a bit of a challenge for anyone, myself included.

Imagining the time between first opening your eyes and their last closing, as but a chapter of your eternal life is pretty easy. Living this physical life as chapter of always was, always will, be can be a stretch for even the most devout of Christians. My point is that the promise of eternal life doesn’t resonate the same way that “having a good time…wish you were here” does. One is tangible and relatable. The other is a promise yet to be realized. You have to die first. For my purposes, let’s call it the test of death. You pass or fail based on the degree of faith you bring to the classroom.

This is that John 3:16 stuff. I’m focusing on 14. “Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes in Him may have eternal life.” So a condition for eternal life is the belief in Christ and all that goes with it. My sanctified imagination says I have been part of God’s great creation since before the beginning of time because God has existed forever. The question here seems to be will I be part of it after my physical demise? It’s a question of faith and that faith is tested right here right now. It all rests on your understanding of Christ as the way, the truth and the life. It is so much more to me than trite biblical sayings. You got to know that you know that you know. May I paraphrase and say this is about relationship and acceptance of Christian truth. I believe what I can see. It’s quite comforting. The

question here is can you believe what you don’t see?

I do not want to lose focus here. I’m talking about eternal life. Do you believe you will live in some form or fashion forever? Here it is. “But whoever lives by the truth comes into the Light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God.” John 3:21. My point? How you live, what you believe, who you trust goes a long way towards existing in eternity. Maybe you don’t think about it much. But my imagination sometimes gets the best

of me because the point of the dash between my birth and my death that will appear on my tombstone is really but a moment in time. I just contemplate from time to time its impact on the eternal part of me. It all seems to be predicated on the following. Remember this for the test. “But now that you have been set free (by Christ) from sin and have become slaves to God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 6: 22-23.

And for the record, don’t trip about the word slave here. Slavery here means buying fully into becoming what God created us to be. Simply put, born again is a state of mind; one that puts forever into perspective. We live there in God’s time and not our own. May God bless and keep you forever.

Statement from State Senator Royce Weston Judge Dietz’ ruling on Texas school finance

DALLAS - If being conservative is defined as carefully monitoring and making best use of one’s resources then, I can be called a fiscal conservative. But what state leadership and the majority party have done with Texas' system of school finance over the last 20 years has nothing to do with being fiscally conservative. Rather, it is mindful of what could be called a “self-fulfilling prophesy.”

Today's ruling on Public School Finance, by Judge Dietz, once again vindicates those who have long espoused that Texas' Public School Finance System has in the past and continues to fail to meet the constitutionally mandated "general diffusion of knowledge" standard in providing to Texas students, an efficient system of public schools. Testimony reiterated that the system continues to be poorly funded and the mechanism distributing the funds also unfair, even with the infusion of more than $3 billion from

last session. Since 2011, school districts have struggled on reduced budgets and were force to find refuge in the legal system. But this time, property poor and property rich districts were on the same side. It is my hope that state leadership will listen to the courts and not continue attempts at avoiding an issue that has landed us in court seven times from 1984 - 2013.

As a state, we have consistently chosen to underfund the educational needs of a student population that has reached historic levels of diversity. At the same time, traditional public schools are being vilified by one means and then yet another. This criticism provides cover to continue to install the mechanisms that deplete the educational resources for children, who in a generation, will be called upon to enter the workforce and contribute in a meaningful way to Texas’ economy. In such a scenario, who will be the winner? It’s time to stop playing games with the future of Texas and properly fund our schools.



Remembering Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.



Dear Alma,

I met a great guy online. We talked for a long time before we met and really got a chance to know each other. He is funny and kind and I totally enjoy being with him.

He’s tall and handsome and has a great job working for the government. He has a condo and a nice car.

I mean, he has it going on. We have the same mutual interest and I really want to see us work it out, but there’s one thing.

He has terrible gaps in his teeth and some are crooked.

You ain’t said nothing but a word. I cannot tolerate a man with a jacked up grill.

I know dental costs are expensive, but if your car and your home are plaaya, how in the world can you walk around with tic-tac-toe teeth? What a super turn off.

Now, let me back step a minute and say, I do admire your persistence and ability to focus on all the positives, he has to offer and not dwell on a negative that can be corrected.

I also agree with you, he should have insurance, but maybe he’s afraid. You know many people are, surveys show 75 percent of Americans admit to being afraid of the dentist. Let’s help him get past that.

You gotta tell him, cause you really like him. In a nice way, there’s no need to be brutal or hurtful.

Have him over for dinner, or go out, whichever you prefer. At the end of the evening, after the kiss, right before the goodbye, hand him a card to your dental office.

Mention you just recently had your teeth cleaned and your dentist is looking for new patients. Use the

word “we” not “you” as you continue with, “We all need to keep up with our dental hygiene.” Boom, there you go.

If he goes, then he’s interested in getting the work done. If not, he doesn’t mind the way his teeth look or again, he may be afraid. Give him a few weeks and check on his progress.

If the relationship is still on the right track, tell him you’re going to make his appointment and go with him, providing the encouragement and support he needs. Remind him, girl, how handsome he is and how professional he’ll look when this situation is corrected.

Oh, and after his teeth are repaired, don’t forget to kiss him every time he flashes that great big beautiful smile.

Natalie Athena Littles, 54, of Casselberry, Florida passed away on Sunday, August 17, 2014. Natalie was born in Tallahassee, Florida on

June 27, 1960 to Ms. Lorena Bush. and Mr. Melvin Littles. She was educated in the Leon County public school system and graduated from Amos P Godby High School in 1978. Natalie attended Florida A&M University and earned a

Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Management. She furthered her education by obtaining a Masters Degree in

Business Administration from Embry Riddle University in Daytona Beach, Florida.

Natalie gave her life to Christ at a young age and taught Sunday School at Macedonia Primitive Baptist Church.

Natalie’s professional career began in Greenville South Carolina where she worked for Yokogawa. From there she moved to Fort Worth Texas and worked for Lockheed Martin. In 1985, Natalie moved to Orlando, Florida and worked for McDonnell Douglas as a Compliance Specialist, Natalie eventually left the Corporate world and became an entrepreneur first with Mann Technology Company and then as a Real Estate agent.

While attending Florida A&M University, Natalie followed her heart and became a member of the Beta Alpha Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. in 1980, one of the Eclectic 17.

Natalie later became a devoted and faithful member of the Orlando Alumnae Chapter. She served on several committees and was the Immediate Past President of the chapter.

She leaves to forever cherish her memories: Brothers: Eric (Brenda) Bush of Tallahassee, Florida; Melvin Randy Littles, Jr., Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Sisters: April and Alechica Littles of Atlanta, Georgia; Stepmother: Carol Littles of Atlanta, Georgia.

Natalie will especially be missed by her god-children: Devan Porter of Orlando, Florida, and Amber Porter of Alexandria, Louisiana and her friends for life: Jennifer Miller, Jennifer Tims, and Robbin Porter; brother-in-law, Abraham Curry, Sr.; her Sorors of the Orlando Alumnae and Beta Alpha Chapters; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Studies by theUniversity of Texas atDallas Institute of UrbanPolicy, United Way andTexas A&M are takingplace now to assess thequality of life in the SouthDallas community beforebillion dollar projectsinvolving the new DARTLight Rail and the Trinity

Toll Road are brought tothe area. Some construc-tion has begun with thedemolition of homes tofollow later this year.At a meeting held by the

three institutions, a focusgroup of sorts dished ideasand findings on the surveysthat have told the story of theresidents of South Dallas.“We are measuring con-

ditions that may vary fromstreet to street,” said Dr.

Timothy Bray, director ofthe Institute of UrbanPolicy Research. He helps
