NTTA recognizes O’Neal, BDAC

The North Texas Tollway Authority (NTTA) recognized outgoing members of the regional transportation giantʼs Business Diversity Advisory Council during ceremonies at the August board meeting. Chairman Ken Barr cited Charles OʼNeal -- lead consultant for local business development firm, Strategique – for “... his commitment to increasing opportunities for minority and women-owned businesses in North Texas.” Mr. OʼNeal had served on the DBAC since June 2010. Other members recognized during the meeting were Beverly Wright, William “Bill” Lawrence, Galileo Jumoa-as, and Rosa Navarro. “There has been a definite change in the culture at NTTA during our tenure on the BDAC,” said OʼNeal. “From a point where there was virtually no participation by MWBEs, to now is like night and day. Just a few years ago, ethnic minority owned businesses were not even on the radar, now weʼve begun to see real inclusion and significant growth in opportunity. All of us can look back proudly on the role weʼve played in helping to shape the policies that will pay huge dividends in the future.”

THE LINKS, INCORPORATED RESPONDS TO TEXTING AND

DRIVING EPIDEMIC

Washington, DC (BlackNews.com) -- The Links, Incorporated applauds AT&T's efforts to stop the alarmingly increasing trend of texting while driving, and is proudly supporting AT&T's "It Can Wait" campaign.

With over 100,000 deaths just last year, The Links, Incorporated recognizes the importance of ending this dangerous habit that has become all too popular among teens and adults. Drivers are 23 times more likely to get in a crash while texting and driving according to a recent AT&T Wireless survey. AT&T is leading the way to

educate drivers and passengers of the dangers through its campaign.

The Links, Incorporated is encouraging its 12,000 members to sign AT&T's pledge not to text and drive through the website, www.ItCanwait.com, and participate in the September 19, "No Text on Board - Pledge Day" to bring attention to this important issue.

To find out more information about the pledge visit the AT&T website: www.ItCanwait.com

Message to the people...Summer is winding down for most of us and its back to school for

millions of children.Unfortunately for many of our youth, the last time they picked up a

book to read was during the last school year. They were not fortunate enough to participate in many of the

summer programs, like the one that Bernadette Nuttall started, along with her sorority sister, Dianne Robinson, long before she became a Dallas Independent School District Board Trustee.

Located in the southern sector of Dallas, the program, keeps young minds engaged and focused, instead of running wild and uncontrolled for the entire summer.

Circle of Support, Inc. is a summer learning program focusing on science, math, art, reading and technology (S.M.A.R.T.) and serving over 250 area girls and boys. Although the two sorority sisters first focused on females, they expanded the program to service young boys too.

Using her expertise as a grant writer, Ms. Nuttall has been able to secure the funding needed to keep the program thriving.

What a great way for youth to spend the summer. In addition to strengthening their skills in very critical areas, the students participate in a well-rounded program that includes field trips and nutritional meals. In a week or so, those students, when they walk into the classrooms won’t be in foreign territory because they have had a very enriching summer where they were challenged and encouraged. In the past few weeks, I have listened to numerous teachers as they talked about the upcoming school year. It was refreshing to hear the teachers sound optimistic and excited. I hope they can maintain the same degree of enthusiasm as the year progresses because I know they definitely will be challenged.

Hopefully this will be a year when every student will come to work, because it is their job, focused, respectful, inquisitive, and eager to learn. Maybe, just maybe the principals and administrators will continue to hold the teachers and counselors to the highest standard while also encouraging them along the way. Of course we want our teachers to be hell-bent on ensuring that each child that enters their classroom is given the best they have in an effort o educate them.

Sure we know some children are going to be rebels. There will be some problems, I’m sure. There are so many challenges.

Then too, hopefully the parents will come to visit at school, and not just for athletic evens or performances. We don’t need parents showing up in their pink hair rollers and bedroom slippers or their wife-beaters and reeking of marijuana -- ready to open a can of you know what on a teacher who had the unmitigated gall to check your child when they are out of order.

Every child won’t have the benefit of a productive summer that leads into a new school year. Some spent the entire summer, playing video games or soaking up hours in front of the television. Oh,

there are so many horror stories to tell but I would rather focus on a positive future. When those doors open, the hot fun in the summertime period is over. There’s work to do and I am going

to be looking for those success stories all year long, because I know they are out there.Adults, we have to step up and take charge. There’s no way we can expect the children to “govern

themselves accordingly. We must show them the way and hold them accountable. It can seem like such a thankless, unrewarding job, however, if we give it a chance and give it our all, we can

have a significant impact on the lives of these young people. We owe it to ourselves and those children to honor our commitment even when we are faced with the most severe disciplinary problems.

School can be fun too. We have work to do and all the work shouldn’t fall solely on the shoulders of the teachers.

Cheryl P.S. We are saddened to learn that Jokae’s African American Books will be closing later this year. More on Jokae’s next week!

As another presidential election is fast approaching, I ask myself if people take the time out to really evaluate the quality of leadership in a popular vote. It appears that accountability takes a back-seat to propaganda and speeches. Well, here is a very interesting fact. In almost every city in America and in the inner-cities in particular, the participation of the people who are registered to vote averages just fewer than 38%. So this points out that the greater amounts of registered voters do not participate in the process. Rather than state the obvious here I will suggest that there must be a valid reason for this issue. Most people will see a person in a leadership role at some point in life and recognize that the person is not qualified to be a real leader. Then there are other times when the most qualified person to lead is not the popular choice. What a dilemma! Imagine being the most qualified person for a job that gives the people under your leadership the best chance to succeed, only to find there is something about you that people don’t like. Imagine further being under a microscope where all of your flaws can be seen and people can say things about you that may have nothing to do with the job. Then consider your options after you are held responsible for problems that were caused by the leader before you who is not present to share the weight of accountability. Thinking about all of this, who would want to a leader? Now we can get past the surface of this principle of leadership. Anyone who is fit to lead will be found doing things that popularity will be in direct conflict with. This is due to the fact that popular things are tied to emotional desires that are mostly superficial. The best leaders are often not popular at all when they are making the kinds of decisions that upset the masses. The question then becomes, why are the masses so influenced by popularity? It is simply because it does not require a person to engage in a struggle or conflict that would make them accountable. A smile, a head-nod, thumbs up or a like on Face Book is how we show our approval. How difficult is that? (Smile) No knock on Face Book, I’m just saying. So if people are going to get the kind of leadership they say they want, we will have to engage in a process that pulls us away from the normal going along to get along and put into action a plan of leadership building. Where does this begin, you ask? Well, I’m starting with that handsome man in the mirror! I won’t talk about anyone else’s leadership until I make sure I’m building my own and making myself accountable. Okay, now your turn!

Dallas-based Image Advantage PR recently was recently honored by the National Association of Black Journalists. Company owner Ramona Logan accepted the Public Relations Award during NABJ's Salute to Excellence Gala in New Orleans, La. The NABJ award is given for exemplary PR campaigns for nonprofits. Image Advantage produced the successful public relations campaign for the Third Annual Nappiology Expo in 2011.

Ramona Logan had an impressive career as a journalist . During a logv career in the Dallas market, Ms. Logan

garnered several wards and was respected across the country. Many were saddened to hear that she was leaving NBC 5. Still today people talk about how they enjoyed her work and her involvement in the Dallas-Fort Worth market. You see, Ms. Logan wasn’t just a face you saw on your television screen. When not working, she was always out somewhere, as an active member of the community-- attending church services, speaking at events or mentoring youth.

Since her days at NBC5, Ramona has “reinvented” herself and gained an impressive clientele as a PR, media and

personal consultant. Today she is using her almost three decades as a journalist to help businesses, organizations and individuals develop and promote their image. "Ramona Logan and Image Advantage did an incredible job for us in just a month and a half," said De Phillips Johnson, founder of the Nappiology Expo that was held in the Dallas suburb of Hurst, Texas. "We had hired another PR consultant to help us the first two years of the Expo, but they did not produce any publicity for us. Ms. Logan's efforts produced national and local media coverage and helped us to turn out 2,000-plus attendants-a 150 percent increase from the year before."    The annual Nappiology Expo allows African American women to share information on transitioning from relaxed to natural hair. Women also learn about natural hair products and styling techniques. "It was so rewarding to provide information to women on this growing trend of natural hair," Ms. Logan said. "Winning an award for the PR campaign just validates the job we did in spreading the news on this

important topic. It is more than a feature story, it is a trendsetting business hair care industry story." "Personally, I had planned to go natural in a few years, but the Nappiology workshops provided so much great information. I have not put relaxer on my hair since the expo in November 2011," Ms. Logan added. "I wore a natural Afro during my teens and twenties, but there are so many more options available these days for natural hairstyles and natural hair care products."  Ms. Logan started Image Advantage in 2006. Image Advantage services include public relations, community relations, marketing, media training, and video production. Clients include the Cedar Hill Independent School District, Southern Bible Institute, Texas Institute for Surgery,   KaMIT Sport, government agencies, and nonprofit organizations. A graduate of Wichita State University with a B.A. in Journalism, Ms. Logan’s award-winning broadcast journalism career was built at NBC 5 in Dallas, Texas and KOCO-TV in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Ms. Logan is a joy to work with and she probably gets as many invitations to speak as she did when she was sitting g behind an anchor desk. Known for her pleasing personality and exceptional work ethic, it’s no wonder that she is still in high demand and receives rave reviews following her presentations.

She’s a long-time member of the National Association of Black Journalists and the Dallas-Fort Worth Association of Black Journalists. For years she has worked with the scholarship and urban journalism workshop. Clearly youth have a special place in her heart and she has received rave reviews for one of her sessions

that she presents at the workshop: "I Can't Hear What You Are Saying Because Your Clothes Are Too LOUD!" In her engaging and high energy delivery, Ms. Logan is a favorite of numerous groups and she is in constant demand of r her skills at helping prepare clients for dealing with the media. Sounds easy? Well, if you’ve ever been at a loss for words or your freeze up as soon as a microphone is placed in front of you, then you need Ms. Logan! A published author and an advisory board member of the Jeffries Street Learning Center, Ms. Logan has developed several workshops including:

“Media Strategies for Winning Airtime and Headlines”“K.I.S.S. and Tell-A-Vision: Mastering the TV Interview”

“The Power Points of a Professional Image”“Nothing Casual About Business Casual”“Developing a Professional Brand from your Personal Image”“Beyond Tolerance” (a diversity communication workshop Beyond Tolerance)“The Beauty of Grace” www.beautyofgrace.com Ms. Logan is a perfect example of someone who changed with the times. Instead of shutting down after leaving NBC 5, she left with a plan and that plan has flourished into a second successful career. For more information visit  www.rlimageadvantage.com

Dr. Randal Pinkett, season four winner of NBC's The Apprentice and Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, BCT Partners

The SAMHSA Indefinite Delivery Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) contract has total ceiling of $900 million during the next five years. The NIH Chief Information Officer-Solutions and Partners 3 (CIO-SP3) IDIQ Government-Wide Acquisition Contract (GWAC) has a total ceiling of $20 billion for the next ten years. They also exemplify our commitment to working with federal government agencies - helping achieve their missions and thereby improving the lives of the people they serve." The BCT CIO-SP3 Team consists of nine organizations and the BCT SAMHSA Team consists of eight organizations with comprehensive healthcare and IT expertise - including a renowned worldwide research organization, an innovative college of public health, and a leading integrated care management system - to deliver

Texas-based health and wellness provider offers

meningitis shots  As parents and students across the country are readying for the new school year, Star Wellness USA founder and CEO Johnette van Eeden is smoothing out the transition back to school by offering meningitis shots as a part of Star Wellness’ clinical services.“Since we provide meningitis shots, it takes some pressure off of parents,” says van Eeden. “These shots are very hard to find and by having them readily available at Star Wellness, parents will have one less thing to worry about as they coordinate everything they need to finalize in order to send their kids back to school.” In adolescence, individuals between the ages of 16 through 21 are at the highest risk for contracting the meningococcal disease. The CDC advises that preteens and teens receive various combinations of doses of the vaccine and booster shot depending on their age at the time of their first shot. In addition to which the vast majority of universities and colleges nationwide require proof of meningococcal vaccinations

before incoming freshmen are allowed to attend. “Meningitis shots are always in high demand, especially at this time of year, but very few pharmacies take insurance and many pediatricians do not keep the vaccine in stock,” adds van Eeden. “Blue Cross Blue Shield has been sending patients to us all summer, specifically for these shots, because they know that we are always prepared. Star Wellness is all about prevention and this is an important preventive service that we are happy to provide to our clients and their families.” To schedule an appointment for a meningitis vaccination, please call 800-685-5572. More information on additional Star Wellness services available at StarWellnessUSA.com.

Cities to request aerial spray for mosquitoes

Pursuant to information received from Commissioner David Lakey of the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS), each home-rule city of Dallas County has the ability to request Aerial Spraying for mosquitoes.  Cities within Dallas County that request Aerial Spraying can request that

their entire city be sprayed.  The City of Richardson made their request to the State and we have been informed that the entire City of Richardson, including the portion which is in Collin County will be included in tonight’s map grid.  Also included in tonight’s spray schedule are the entire cities of Garland, University Park and Highland Park, a portion of Dallas and the portion of Mesquite which is north of I-30. Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins met with mayors and officials from the county’s Southern cities as well, to put the full spectrum of options at their disposal.  The Southern cities were given an equal oppor-tunity to choose between Aerial and Ground Spray for their cities. While state, local and county officials will continue to work hard to protect citizens it is imperative that citizens also take preventative measures to protect themselves and their families from being bitten in the first place.

Detroit, MI (BlackNews.com) -- Through a Childs Eyes tells a true-life story that references the importance of protecting your child against sexual predators. Author Phillis T. Forrest opens her old wounds and shares a touching story in order to structure a guideline for single mothers in hopes to help them protect their children from sexual predators.

Through A Childs Eyes speaks on the process of a sexual predator that stalked and preyed his way into the authors life at the young age of seven. This nightmare began the day that her mother broke her household rules that she put into place to protect the author and her siblings. The consequences of her actions allowed a complete stranger to abuse and manipulate the author over a

period of 14 years that ultimately led to mothering two of his children. Ms. Forrest comments, "I told my story because I wanted to show the world exactly how this man manipulated his way into my existence and to show mothers how this sort of situation can happen." The story is written in a guideline format with plenty of examples of the experiences that the author encountered each time the protection of her mother lessened. The story of the author is told to gain the credibility of her readers which in turn shows them that the opposite of her mothers actions could have saved her from her nightmare. In chapter 14, entitled "Mothers Lets Have a Conversation", the author breaks away from her story to have a heart-to-heart with mothers. The chapter touches on subjects that are often not discussed in the homes of sexually abused children. With subtitles such as: "Ripley's Believe It Or Not", "Flipping the Script", and "Knowledge Is Power" (to name a few), the author begins to break down the psychological awareness that parents need to become educated on when dealing with a child that has been preyed upon by a child molester.

A paperback copy of Through a Childs Eyes can be purchased at www.throughachildseyes290611.com and Amazon.com, and a e-book copy can be downloaded via the Kindle. "There are so many times that I have read a book and wished I could have had a conversation with the author to answer perplexing questions," says Forrest. Because of this, she has given the public an opportunity to speak with her through her website, scheduled

radio talk show segments, and book signings in California, Michigan, Tennessee and Georgia. Forrest has been an amazing mother to two beautiful girls despite the circumstances. Her dream is to share her story with the world; in order to educate mothers, protect children, and help victims let go of their pain.

Author tells story to educate single moms on how to protect children from sexual predators

2013 Bill Gates Scholars Program giving away 1,000 scholarships to

minority studentsNationwide (BlackNews.com) -- In

recognition of Black History Month, Nationwide Insurance is encouraging consumers to get on line to share, build and capture important family history in celebration of the rich heritage and legacy of the African American family. In addition, consumers can visit Pandora.com to build a personalized music library and support the United Negro College Fund (UNCF).

Every year, the Gates Millennium Scholars (GMS) Program selects 1,000 talented minority students to receive a good-through-graduation scholarship to

use at any college or university of their choice. The program provides scholars with personal and professional development through our leadership programs along with academic support throughout their college career.

Administered by the United Negro College Fund, the program was initially funded by a $1 billion grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Since 1999, it has funded the education of more than 16,000 students, awarding them more than $614 million dollars to pay for tuition, fees, books and housing.

The program aims to reduce financial barriers for African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander American and Hispanic American students with high academic and leadership promise who have significant financial need; increase the representation of these target groups in the disciplines of computer science, education, engineering, library science, mathematics, public health and the sciences, where these groups are severely underrepresented; develop a diversified cadre of future leaders for America by facilitating successful completion of bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees;

and provide seamless support from undergraduate through doctoral programs, for students selected as Gates Millennium Scholars entering target disciplines

The deadline for submission is January 16, 2013.

Powerful workbook brings Black families

together

Miami, FL (BlackNews.com) -- What does a 16-year old, hip-hop loving, pants-sagging high school junior; and an

"old-school," college educated, R & B obsessed grandmother of three have in common? Far more than either of them would have imagined!

Thanks to SEEN.HEARD.LOVED., a powerful new electronic workbook, different generations within families are coming together and talking about topics ranging from overcoming fear, to the sometimes controversial lyrics to rap music.

In this day of technological obsessions like Facebook and Twitter, the gap between generations is getting wider and wider. Fortunately, families still get together for BBQs, holidays and to celebrate big life occasions; however, get-togethers that provide an opportunity for families to tune out of the techno-gadgetry and tune into each other happen far and few between. One of the consequences of our techno-obsessed society is that families can be in the same room with each other without saying a word.

The $1.00 e-workbook provides a fun, simple, user-friendly opportunity for families to discuss important topics that may have been previously "off limits," while also motivating and celebrating each other! Some of the activity titles include "I Believe I Can Fly," "This Too Shall Pass," and "We Are Family!"

The book's author, Renee M. Hollinger, said she created SEEN.HEARD.LOVED. because "I believe that beneath our techno-gadgetry obsession and what appears to be a permanent disconnect, families have a deep desire to deepen connections and talk to each other," said Hollinger, a filmmaker, writer and former social worker.

The smart, unique and incredibly engaging workbook is bringing together sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, parents, aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents and is also smashing assumptions by

revealing that the generations have far more in common than expected.

On the one hand, older family members get to broach topics like sagging pants and the use of the N-word, provided they maintain a strict non-judgment zone. On the other hand, these same older relatives who may be avoiding "the road less traveled" as it relates to the book they never wrote or the small business they never started get to hear from the youngsters why Nike's powerful mantra (JUST DO IT!) can and should be applied to life!

As for the low price, Hollinger said, "I toyed with what an ideal price point would be for such rich information, because it is certainly worth far more than one dollar." She added, "But after discussing it with my team, we decided that the most important thing is to get the information into as many hands as possible, so we settled on a dollar."

"I am so excited for families to experience SEEN.HEARD.LOVED.,'" Hollinger added, "The culminating activity is so powerful that grown men have been moved to tears."

The SEEN.HEARD.LOVED.workbook costs only $1.00 and is available at www.seenheardloved.com.
