SIX DAYS OF CREATION AND THE SABBATH

1In the beginning when God created athe heavens and the earth, 2 the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God b swept over the face

of the waters. 3 Th en God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. 4 And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morn-ing, the fi rst day.

6 And God said, “Let there be a dome in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters.” 7 So God made the dome and separated the waters that were under the dome from the waters that were above the dome. And it was so. 8 God called the dome Sky. And there was evening and there was morning, the second day.

9 And God said, “Let the waters under the sky be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear.” And it was so. 10 God called the dry land Earth, and the waters that were gathered together he called Seas. And God saw that it was good. 11 Th en God said, “Let the earth put forth vegeta-tion: plants yielding seed, and fruit trees of every kind on earth that bear fruit with the seed in it.” And it was so. 12 Th e earth brought forth vegetation: plants yielding seed of ev-ery kind, and trees of every kind bearing fruit with the seed in it. And God saw that it was good. 13 And there was evening and there was morning, the third day.

14 And God said, “Let there be lights in the dome of the sky to separate the day from the night; and let them be for signs and for seasons and for days and years, 15 and let them be lights in the dome of the sky to give light upon the earth.” And it was so. 16 God made the two great lightsthe greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the nightand the stars. 17 God set them in the dome of the sky to give light upon the earth,

18 to rule over the day and over the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. 19 And there was evening and there was morning, the fourth day.

20 And God said, “Let the waters bring forth swarms of living creatures, and let birds fl y above the earth across the dome of the sky.” 21 So God created the great sea monsters and every living creature that moves, of ev-ery kind, with which the waters swarm, and every winged bird of every kind. And God saw that it was good. 22 God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful and multiply and fi ll the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.” 23 And there was evening and there was morning, the fi ft h day.

24 And God said, “Let the earth bring forth living creatures of every kind: catt le and creeping things and wild animals of the earth of every kind.” And it was so. 25 God made the wild animals of the earth of ev-ery kind, and the catt le of every kind, and everything that creeps upon the ground of every kind. And God saw that it was good.

26 Th en God said, “Let us make human-kind c in our image, according to our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fi sh of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the catt le, and over all the wild animals of the earth, d and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth.”27 So God created humankind c in his image, in the image of God he created them; e male and female he created them.

18 Th en the L God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper as his partner.” 19 So out of the ground the L God formed every animal of the fi eld and every bird of the air, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them; and whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. 20 Th e man gave names to all catt le, and to the birds of the air, and to every animal of the fi eld; but for the man a there was not found a helper as his partner. 21 So the L God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; then he took one of his ribs and closed up its place with fl esh. 22 And the rib that the L God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. 23 Th en the man said, “Th is at last is bone of my bones and fl esh of my fl esh; this one shall be called Woman, b for out of Man c this one was taken.”24 Th erefore a man leaves his father and his mother and clings to his wife, and they be-come one fl esh. 25 And the man and his wife were both naked, and were not ashamed.

THE FIRST SIN AND ITS PUNISHMENT

3Now the serpent was more craft y than any other wild animal that the L God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God say, ‘You shall not eat from any tree in the

garden’?” 2 Th e woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden; 3 but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the middle of the garden, nor shall you touch it, or you shall die.’ ” 4 But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not die; 5 for God knows that when

you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, d knowing good and evil.” 6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate; and she also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate. 7 Th en the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fi g leaves to-gether and made loincloths for themselves.

8 Th ey heard the sound of the LGod walking in the garden at the time of the evening breeze, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the L God among the trees of the garden. 9 But the L God called to the man, and said to him, “Where are you?” 10 He said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.” 11 He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?” 12 Th e man said, “Th e woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit from the tree,

and I ate.” 13 Th en the L God said to the woman, “What is this that you have done?” Th e woman said, “Th e serpent tricked me, and I ate.” 14 Th e L God said to the ser-pent,

In the day that the L a God made the earth and the heavens, 5 when no plant of the fi eld was yet in the earth and no herb of the fi eld had yet sprung upfor the LGod had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was no one to till the ground; 6 but a stream would rise from the earth, and wa-ter the whole face of the ground 7 then the

10 A river fl ows out of Eden to water the garden, and from there it divides and be-comes four branches. 11 Th e name of the fi rst is Pishon; it is the one that fl ows around the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold;

12 and the gold of that land is good; bdellium and onyx stone are there. 13 Th e name of the second river is Gihon; it is the one that fl ows around the whole land of Cush. 14 Th e name of the third river is Tigris, which fl ows east of Assyria. And the fourth river is the Eu-phrates.

15 Th e L God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to till it and keep it. 16 And the L God commanded the man, “You may freely eat of every tree of the garden; 17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall die.”

People in Bible times were curious about how the world worked, so the Bible writers used thoughtful stories to explain creation. The six days God used to create the world could be literal. Or they could be a poetic way the writer of Genesis symbolized great spans of time.

Joseph was already in Egypt. 6 Th en Joseph died, and all his brothers, and that whole generation. 7 But the Israelites were fruitful and prolifi c; they multiplied and grew exceedingly strong, so that the land was fi lled with them.

THE ISRAELITES ARE OPPRESSED8 Now a new king arose over Egypt, who

did not know Joseph. 9 He said to his people, “Look, the Israelite people are more numer-ous and more powerful than we. 10 Come, let us deal shrewdly with them, or they will increase and, in the event of war, join our en-emies and fi ght against us and escape from the land.” 11 Th erefore they set taskmasters over them to oppress them with forced la-bor. Th ey built supply cities, Pithom and Rameses, for Pharaoh. 12 But the more they were oppressed, the more they multiplied and spread, so that the Egyptians came to dread the Israelites. 13 Th e Egyptians became ruthless in imposing tasks on the Israelites, 14 and made their lives bitt er with hard ser-vice in mortar and brick and in every kind of fi eld labor. Th ey were ruthless in all the tasks that they imposed on them.

15 Th e king of Egypt said to the Hebrew midwives, one of whom was named Shiphrah and the other Puah, 16 “When you act as mid-wives to the Hebrew women, and see them

on the birthstool, if it is a boy, kill him; but if it is a girl, she shall live.” 17 But the midwives feared God; they did not do as the king of Egypt commanded them, but they let the boys live. 18 So the king of Egypt summoned the midwives and said to them, “Why have you done this, and allowed the boys to live?” 19 Th e midwives said to Pharaoh, “Because the Hebrew women are not like the Egyp-tian women; for they are vigorous and give birth before the midwife comes to them.” 20 So God dealt well with the midwives; and the people multiplied and became very strong. 21 And because the midwives feared God, he gave them families. 22 Th en Pharaoh commanded all his people, “Every boy that is born to the Hebrews a you shall throw into the Nile, but you shall let every girl live.”

BIRTH AND YOUTH OF MOSES

2Now a man from the house of Levi went and married a Levite woman. 2 Th e woman conceived and bore a son; and when she saw that he was a fi ne baby, she hid him

three months. 3 When she could hide him no longer she got a papyrus basket for him, and plastered it with bitumen and pitch; she put the child in it and placed it among the reeds on the bank of the river. 4 His sister stood at a distance, to see what would happen to him.

5 Th e daughter of Pharaoh came down to bathe at the river, while her att endants walked beside the river. She saw the bas-ket among the reeds and sent her maid to bring it. 6 When she opened it, she saw the

child. He was crying, and she took pity on him. “Th is must be one of the Hebrews’ children,” she said. 7 Th en his sister said to Pharaoh’s daughter, “Shall I go and get you a nurse from the Hebrew women to nurse the child for you?” 8 Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Yes.” So the girl went and called the child’s mother. 9 Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this child and nurse it for me, and I will give you your wages.” So the woman took the child and nursed it. 10 When the child grew up, she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter, and she took him as her son. She named him Moses, a “because,” she said, “I drew him out b of the water.”

MOSES FLEES TO MIDIAN11 One day, aft er Moses had grown up, he

went out to his people and saw their forced labor. He saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his kinsfolk. 12 He looked this way and that, and seeing no one he killed the Egyp-tian and hid him in the sand. 13 When he went out the next day, he saw two Hebrews fi ghting; and he said to the one who was in the wrong, “Why do you strike your fellow Hebrew?” 14 He answered, “Who made you a ruler and judge over us? Do you mean to kill me as you killed the Egyptian?” Th en Moses was afraid and thought, “Surely the thing is known.” 15 When Pharaoh heard of it, he sought to kill Moses.

But Moses fl ed from Pharaoh. He sett led in the land of Midian, and sat down by a well. 16 Th e priest of Midian had seven daughters. Th ey came to draw water, and fi lled the troughs to water their father’s fl ock. 17 But some shepherds came and drove them away.

Moses got up and came to their defense and watered their fl ock. 18 When they returned to their father Reuel, he said, “How is it that you have come back so soon today?” 19 Th ey said, “An Egyptian helped us against the shepherds; he even drew water for us and watered the fl ock.” 20 He said to his daugh-ters, “Where is he? Why did you leave the man? Invite him to break bread.” 21 Moses agreed to stay with the man, and he gave Mo-ses his daughter Zipporah in marriage. 22 She bore a son, and he named him Gershom; for he said, “I have been an alien c residing in a foreign land.”

23 Aft er a long time the king of Egypt died. Th e Israelites groaned under their slav-ery, and cried out. Out of the slavery their cry for help rose up to God. 24 God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. 25 God looked upon the Israelites, and God took notice of them.

MOSES AT THE BURNING BUSH

3Moses was keeping the fl ock of his father-in-law Jethro, the priest of Midian; he led his fl ock be-yond the wilderness, and came to Horeb, the mountain of God.

2 Th ere the angel of the L appeared to him in a fl ame of fi re out of a bush; he looked, and the bush was blazing, yet it was not consumed. 3 Th en Moses said, “I must turn aside and look at this great sight, and see why the bush is not burned up.” 4 When the L saw that he had turned aside to see, God called to him out of the bush, “Moses, Moses!” And he said, “Here I am.” 5 Th en he

DID YOU KNOW?WHAT’S IN A NAME?

In Hebrew, the name Moses means, “I drew him out of water.” Water is an important symbol in Moses’ life story. As an infant, Moses was rescued from the Nile River. As an adult, Moses led his people across the Red Sea.

The name Jesus means “God is salvation” in Hebrew. It is related to the name Joshua. For more about Jesus’ name, read Matthew 1:23-25 and Luke 1:31-33.

the people from the Egyptians, a when they dealt arrogantly with them.” 12 And Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, brought a burnt off er-ing and sacrifi ces to God; and Aaron came with all the elders of Israel to eat bread with Moses’ father-in-law in the presence of God.

13 Th e next day Moses sat as judge for the people, while the people stood around him from morning until evening. 14 When Moses’ father-in-law saw all that he was do-ing for the people, he said, “What is this that you are doing for the people? Why do you sit alone, while all the people stand around you from morning until evening?” 15 Moses said to his father-in-law, “Because the people come to me to inquire of God. 16 When they have a dispute, they come to me and I decide between one person and another, and I make known to them the statutes and instructions of God.” 17 Moses’ father-in-law said to him, “What you are doing is not good. 18 You will surely wear yourself out, both you and these people with you. For the task is too heavy for you; you cannot do it alone. 19 Now listen to me. I will give you counsel, and God be with you! You should represent the people before God, and you should bring their cases before God; 20 teach them the statutes and instruc-tions and make known to them the way they are to go and the things they are to do. 21 You should also look for able men among all the people, men who fear God, are trustworthy, and hate dishonest gain; set such men over them as offi cers over thousands, hundreds, fi ft ies, and tens. 22 Let them sit as judges for the people at all times; let them bring every important case to you, but decide every mi-nor case themselves. So it will be easier for you, and they will bear the burden with you. 23 If you do this, and God so commands you, then you will be able to endure, and all these people will go to their home in peace.”

24 So Moses listened to his father-in-law and did all that he had said. 25 Moses chose able men from all Israel and appointed them as heads over the people, as offi cers over thousands, hundreds, fi ft ies, and tens. 26 And

they judged the people at all times; hard cases they brought to Moses, but any minor case they decided themselves. 27 Th en Moses let his father-in-law depart, and he went off to his own country.

THE ISRAELITES REACH MOUNT SINAI

19On the third new moon aft er the Israelites had gone out of the land of Egypt, on that very day, they came into the wil-

derness of Sinai. 2 Th ey had journeyed from Rephidim, entered the wilderness of Sinai, and camped in the wilderness; Israel camped there in front of the mountain. 3 Th en Moses went up to God; the L called to him from the mountain, saying, “Th us you shall say to the house of Jacob, and tell the Israel-ites: 4 You have seen what I did to the Egyp-tians, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself. 5 Now therefore, if you obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession out of all the peoples. Indeed, the whole earth is mine, 6 but you shall be for me a priestly kingdom and a holy nation. Th ese are the words that you shall speak to the Israelites.”

7 So Moses came, summoned the elders of the people, and set before them all these words that the L had commanded him. 8 Th e people all answered as one: “Every-thing that the L has spoken we will do.” Moses reported the words of the people to the L. 9 Th en the L said to Moses, “I am going to come to you in a dense cloud, in order that the people may hear when I speak with you and so trust you ever aft er.”

THE PEOPLE CONSECRATEDWhen Moses had told the words of the

people to the L, 10 the L said to Mo-ses: “Go to the people and consecrate them today and tomorrow. Have them wash their clothes 11 and prepare for the third day, be-cause on the third day the L will come

Balaam son of Beor at Pethor, which is on the Euphrates, in the land of Amaw, a to sum-mon him, saying, “A people has come out of Egypt; they have spread over the face of the earth, and they have sett led next to me. 6 Come now, curse this people for me, since they are stronger than I; perhaps I shall be able to defeat them and drive them from the land; for I know that whomever you bless is blessed, and whomever you curse is cursed.”

7 So the elders of Moab and the elders of Midian departed with the fees for divination in their hand; and they came to Balaam, and gave him Balak’s message. 8 He said to them, “Stay here tonight, and I will bring back word to you, just as the L speaks to me”; so the offi cials of Moab stayed with Balaam. 9 God came to Balaam and said, “Who are these men with you?” 10 Balaam said to God, “King Balak son of Zippor of Moab, has sent me this message: 11 ‘A people has come out of Egypt and has spread over the face of the earth; now come, curse them for me; perhaps I shall be able to fi ght against them and drive them out.’ ” 12 God said to Balaam, “You shall not go with them; you shall not curse the people, for they are blessed.” 13 So Balaam rose in the morning, and said to the offi cials of Balak, “Go to your own land, for the L has refused to let me go with you.” 14 So the offi cials of Moab rose and went to Balak, and said, “Balaam refuses to come with us.”

15 Once again Balak sent offi cials, more numerous and more distinguished than these. 16 Th ey came to Balaam and said to him, “Th us says Balak son of Zippor: ‘Do not let anything hinder you from coming to me; 17 for I will surely do you great honor, and whatever you say to me I will do; come, curse this people for me.’ ” 18 But Balaam replied to the servants of Balak, “Although Balak were to give me his house full of silver and gold, I could not go beyond the command of the L my God, to do less or more. 19 You re-main here, as the others did, so that I may learn what more the L may say to me.” 20 Th at night God came to Balaam and said

to him, “If the men have come to summon you, get up and go with them; but do only what I tell you to do.” 21 So Balaam got up in the morning, saddled his donkey, and went with the offi cials of Moab.

BALAAM, THE DONKEY, AND THE ANGEL

22 God’s anger was kindled because he was going, and the angel of the L took his stand in the road as his adversary. Now he was riding on the donkey, and his two ser-vants were with him. 23 Th e donkey saw the angel of the L standing in the road, with a drawn sword in his hand; so the donkey turned off the road, and went into the fi eld; and Balaam struck the donkey, to turn it back onto the road. 24 Th en the angel of the L stood in a narrow path between the vine-yards, with a wall on either side. 25 When the donkey saw the angel of the L, it scraped against the wall, and scraped Balaam’s foot against the wall; so he struck it again. 26 Th en the angel of the L went ahead, and stood in a narrow place, where there was no way to turn either to the right or to the left . 27 When the donkey saw the angel of the L, it lay down under Balaam; and Balaam’s anger was kindled, and he struck the donkey with his staff . 28 Th en the L opened the mouth of the donkey, and it said to Balaam, “What have I done to you, that you have struck me these three times?” 29 Balaam said to the donkey, “Because you have made a fool of me! I wish I had a sword in my hand! I would kill you right now!” 30 But the donkey said to Balaam, “Am I not your donkey, which you

have ridden all your life to this day? Have I been in the habit of treating you this way?” And he said, “No.”

31 Th en the L opened the eyes of Balaam, and he saw the angel of the L standing in the road, with his drawn sword in his hand; and he bowed down, falling on his face. 32 Th e angel of the L said to him, “Why have you struck your donkey these three times? I have come out as an adversary, because your way is perverse a before me. 33 Th e donkey saw me, and turned away from me these three times. If it had not turned away from me, surely just now I would have killed you and let it live.” 34 Th en Balaam said to the angel of the L, “I have sinned, for I did not know that you were standing in the road to oppose me. Now therefore, if it is displeasing to you, I will return home.” 35 Th e angel of the L said to Balaam, “Go with the men; but speak only what I tell you to speak.” So Balaam went on with the offi cials of Balak.

36 When Balak heard that Balaam had come, he went out to meet him at Ir-moab, on the boundary formed by the Arnon, at the farthest point of the boundary. 37 Balak said to Balaam, “Did I not send to summon you? Why did you not come to me? Am I not able to honor you?” 38 Balaam said to Balak, “I have come to you now, but do I have power to say just anything? Th e word God puts in my mouth, that is what I must say.” 39 Th en Balaam went with Balak, and they came to Kiriath-huzoth. 40 Balak sacrifi ced oxen and sheep, and sent them to Balaam and to the offi cials who were with him.

BALAAM’S FIRST ORACLE41 On the next day Balak took Balaam

and brought him up to Bamoth-baal; and from there he could see part of the people of

23Israel. b 1 Th en Balaam said to Balak, “Build me seven altars here, and prepare seven bulls and seven rams for me.”

2 Balak did as Balaam had said; and Balak and Balaam off ered a bull and a ram on each al-tar. 3 Th en Balaam said to Balak, “Stay here beside your burnt off erings while I go aside. Perhaps the L will come to meet me. Whatever he shows me I will tell you.” And he went to a bare height.

4 Th en God met Balaam; and Balaam said to him, “I have arranged the seven altars, and have off ered a bull and a ram on each altar.” 5 Th e L put a word in Balaam’s mouth, and said, “Return to Balak, and this is what you must say.” 6 So he returned to Balak, c who was standing beside his burnt off erings with all the offi cials of Moab. 7 Th en Balaam d utt ered his oracle, saying: “Balak has brought me from Aram, the king of Moab from the eastern

mountains: ‘Come, curse Jacob for me; Come, denounce Israel!’ 8 How can I curse whom God has not

cursed? How can I denounce those whom the

L has not denounced? 9 For from the top of the crags I see him, from the hills I behold him. Here is a people living alone, and not reckoning itself among the

nations!10 Who can count the dust of Jacob, or number the dust-cloud e of Israel? Let me die the death of the upright, and let my end be like his!”

11 Th en Balak said to Balaam, “What have you done to me? I brought you to curse my enemies, but now you have done nothing but bless them.” 12 He answered, “Must I not take care to say what the L puts into my mouth?”

BALAAM’S SECOND ORACLE13 So Balak said to him, “Come with me

to another place from which you may see them; you shall see only part of them, and shall not see them all; then curse them for me from there.” 14 So he took him to the fi eld

SAMUEL’S CALLING AND PROPHETIC ACTIVITY

3Now the boy Samuel was min-istering to the L under Eli. Th e word of the L was rare in those days; visions were not wide-spread.

2 At that time Eli, whose eyesight had begun to grow dim so that he could not see, was lying down in his room; 3 the lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the temple of the L, where the ark of God was. 4 Th en the L called, “Samuel! Samuel!” e and he said, “Here I am!” 5 and ran to Eli, and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” But he said, “I did

not call; lie down again.” So he went and lay down. 6 Th e L called again, “Samuel!” Samuel got up and went to Eli, and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” But he said, “I did not call, my son; lie down again.” 7 Now Samuel did not yet know the L, and the word of the L had not yet been revealed to him. 8 Th e L called Samuel again, a third time. And he got up and went to Eli, and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” Th en Eli perceived that the L was calling the boy. 9 Th erefore Eli said to Sam-uel, “Go, lie down; and if he calls you, you shall say, ‘Speak, L, for your servant is listening.’ ” So Samuel went and lay down in his place.

10 Now the L came and stood there, calling as before, “Samuel! Samuel!” And Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is lis-tening.” 11 Th en the L said to Samuel, “See, I am about to do something in Israel that will make both ears of anyone who hears of it tingle. 12 On that day I will fulfi ll against Eli all that I have spoken concern-ing his house, from beginning to end. 13 For I have told him that I am about to punish his house forever, for the iniquity that he knew, because his sons were blaspheming God, f and he did not restrain them. 14 Th erefore I swear to the house of Eli that the iniquity of Eli’s house shall not be expiated by sacrifi ce or off ering forever.”

15 Samuel lay there until morning; then he opened the doors of the house of the L. Samuel was afraid to tell the vision to Eli. 16 But Eli called Samuel and said, “Sam-uel, my son.” He said, “Here I am.” 17 Eli said, “What was it that he told you? Do not hide it from me. May God do so to you and more also, if you hide anything from me of all that he told you.” 18 So Samuel told him every-thing and hid nothing from him. Th en he said, “It is the L; let him do what seems good to him.”

19 As Samuel grew up, the L was with him and let none of his words fall to the ground. 20 And all Israel from Dan to

I not a Philistine, and are you not servants of Saul? Choose a man for yourselves, and let him come down to me. 9 If he is able to fi ght with me and kill me, then we will be your servants; but if I prevail against him and kill him, then you shall be our servants and serve us.” 10 And the Philistine said, “Today I defy the ranks of Israel! Give me a man, that we may fi ght together.” 11 When Saul and all Is-rael heard these words of the Philistine, they were dismayed and greatly afraid.

12 Now David was the son of an Ephrath-ite of Bethlehem in Judah, named Jesse, who had eight sons. In the days of Saul the man was already old and advanced in years. a 13 Th e three eldest sons of Jesse had followed Saul to the batt le; the names of his three sons who went to the batt le were Eliab the fi rstborn, and next to him Abinadab, and the third Shammah. 14 David was the youngest; the three eldest followed Saul, 15 but David went back and forth from Saul to feed his fa-ther’s sheep at Bethlehem. 16 For forty days the Philistine came forward and took his stand, morning and evening.

17 Jesse said to his son David, “Take for your brothers an ephah of this parched grain and these ten loaves, and carry them quickly to the camp to your brothers; 18 also take these ten cheeses to the commander of their thousand. See how your brothers fare, and bring some token from them.”

19 Now Saul, and they, and all the men of Israel, were in the valley of Elah, fi ghting with the Philistines. 20 David rose early in the morning, left the sheep with a keeper, took the provisions, and went as Jesse had com-manded him. He came to the encampment as the army was going forth to the batt le line, shouting the war cry. 21 Israel and the Philistines drew up for batt le, army against army. 22 David left the things in charge of the keeper of the baggage, ran to the ranks, and went and greeted his brothers. 23 As he talked with them, the cham pion, the Philis-tine of Gath, Goliath by name, came up out of the ranks of the Philistines, and spoke

the same words as before. And David heard him.

24 All the Israelites, when they saw the man, fl ed from him and were very much afraid. 25 Th e Israelites said, “Have you seen this man who has come up? Surely he has come up to defy Israel. Th e king will greatly enrich the man who kills him, and will give him his daughter and make his family free in Israel.” 26 David said to the men who stood by him, “What shall be done for the man who kills this Philistine, and takes away the reproach from Israel? For who is this uncir-cumcised Philistine that he should defy the armies of the living God?” 27 Th e people an-swered him in the same way, “So shall it be done for the man who kills him.”

28 His eldest brother Eliab heard him talking to the men; and Eliab’s anger was kindled against David. He said, “Why have you come down? With whom have you left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know your presumption and the evil of your heart; for you have come down just to see the bat-tle.” 29 David said, “What have I done now? It was only a question.” 30 He turned away from him toward another and spoke in the same way; and the people answered him again as before.

31 When the words that David spoke were heard, they repeated them before Saul; and he sent for him. 32 David said to Saul, “Let no one’s heart fail because of him; your servant will go and fi ght with this Philistine.” 33 Saul said to David, “You are not able to go against this Philistine to fi ght with him; for you are just a boy, and he has been a warrior from his youth.” 34 But David said to Saul, “Your servant used to keep sheep for his father; and whenever a lion or a bear came, and took a lamb from the fl ock, 35 I went af-ter it and struck it down, rescuing the lamb from its mouth; and if it turned against me, I would catch it by the jaw, strike it down, and kill it. 36 Your servant has killed both lions and bears; and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be like one of them, since he has defi ed

4 But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a solitary broom tree. He asked that he might die: “It is enough; now, O L, take away my life, for I am no bett er than my ancestors.” 5 Th en he lay down under the broom tree and fell asleep.

36 Your servant has killed both lions and bears; and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be like one of them, since he has defi ed

and on earth peace among those whom he favors!” c

15 When the angels had le them and

gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go now to Bethlehem and see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made known to us.” 16 So they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the child lying in the manger. 17 When they saw this, they made known what had been told them about this child; 18 and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds told them. 19 But Mary treasured all these words and pondered them in her heart. 20 e shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.

JESUS IS NAMED21 Aer eight days had passed, it was

time to circumcise the child; and he was called Jesus, the name given by the angel be-fore he was conceived in the womb.

JESUS IS PRESENTED IN THE TEMPLE22 When the time came for their puri-

cation according to the law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord 23 (as it is wrien in the law of the Lord, “Every rstborn male shall be des-ignated as holy to the Lord”), 24 and they of-fered a sacrice according to what is stated in the law of the Lord, “a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons.”

25 Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; d this man was righteous and devout, looking forward to the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit rested on him. 26 It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah. e 27 Guided by the Spirit, Simeon f came into the temple; and when the parents

SPIRITUAL BLINDNESS35 Jesus heard that they had driven him

out, and when he found him, he said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?” a 36 He an-swered, “And who is he, sir? b Tell me, so that I may believe in him.” 37 Jesus said to him, “You have seen him, and the one speaking with you is he.” 38 He said, “Lord, b I believe.” And he worshiped him. 39 Jesus said, “I came into this world for judgment so that those who do not see may see, and those who do see may become blind.” 40 Some of the Phar-isees near him heard this and said to him, “Surely we are not blind, are we?” 41 Jesus said to them, “If you were blind, you would not have sin. But now that you say, ‘We see,’ your sin remains.

JESUS THE GOOD SHEPHERD

10“Very truly, I tell you, anyone who does not en-ter the sheepfold by the gate but climbs in by an-other way is a thief and a

bandit. 2 e one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. 3 e gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep hear his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4 When he has brought out all his own, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they know his voice. 5 ey will not follow a stranger, but they will run from him because they do not know the voice of strangers.” 6 Jesus used this gure of speech with them, but they did not understand what he was saying to them.

7 So again Jesus said to them, “Very truly, I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep. 8 All who came before me are thieves and ban-dits; but the sheep did not listen to them. 9 I am the gate. Whoever enters by me will be saved, and will come in and go out and nd pasture. 10 e thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.

11 “I am the good shepherd. e good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.

12 e hired hand, who is not the shep-herd and does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and runs away—and the wolf snatches them and scaers them. 13 e hired hand runs away because a hired hand does not care for the sheep. 14 I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, 15 just as the Fa-ther knows me and I know the Father. And I lay down my life for the sheep. 16 I have other sheep that do not belong to this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one ock, one shep-herd. 17 For this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life in order to take it

up again. 18 No one takes c it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it up again. I have received this command from my Father.”

19 Again the Jews were divided because of these words. 20 Many of them were saying, “He has a demon and is out of his mind. Why listen to him?” 21 Others were saying, “ese are not the words of one who has a demon. Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?”

JESUS IS REJECTED BY THE JEWS22 At that time the festival of the Dedica-

tion took place in Jerusalem. It was winter, 23 and Jesus was walking in the temple, in the portico of Solomon. 24 So the Jews gathered around him and said to him, “How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Mes-siah, d tell us plainly.” 25 Jesus answered, “I have told you, and you do not believe. e works that I do in my Father’s name testify

amazed the people of Samaria, saying that he was someone great. 10 All of them, from the least to the greatest, listened to him eagerly, saying, “is man is the power of God that is called Great.” 11 And they listened eagerly to him because for a long time he had amazed them with his magic. 12 But when they be-lieved Philip, who was proclaiming the good news about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women. 13 Even Simon him-self believed. Aer being baptized, he stayed constantly with Philip and was amazed when he saw the signs and great miracles that took place.

14 Now when the apostles at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them. 15 e two went down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit 16 (for as yet the Spirit had not come a upon any of them; they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus). 17 en Peter and John b laid their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit. 18 Now when Si-mon saw that the Spirit was given through the laying on of the apostles’ hands, he of-fered them money, 19 saying, “Give me also this power so that anyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit.” 20 But Peter said to him, “May your silver perish with you, because you thought you could obtain God’s gi with money! 21 You have no part or share in this, for your heart is not right before God. 22 Repent therefore of this wickedness of yours, and pray to the Lord that, if possible, the intent of your heart may be forgiven you. 23 For I see that you are in the gall of bierness and the chains of wick-edness.” 24 Simon answered, “Pray for me to the Lord, that nothing of what you c have said may happen to me.”

25 Now aer Peter and John d had tes-tied and spoken the word of the Lord, they returned to Jerusalem, proclaiming the good news to many villages of the Sa-maritans.

PHILIP AND THE ETHIOPIAN EUNUCH26 en an angel of the Lord said to

Philip, “Get up and go toward the south e to the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.” (is is a wilderness road.) 27 So he got up and went. Now there was an Ethio-pian eunuch, a court ocial of the Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, in charge of her en-tire treasury. He had come to Jerusalem to worship 28 and was returning home; seated in

his chariot, he was reading the prophet Isa-iah. 29 en the Spirit said to Philip, “Go over to this chariot and join it.” 30 So Philip ran up to it and heard him reading the prophet Isaiah. He asked, “Do you understand what you are reading?” 31 He replied, “How can I, unless someone guides me?” And he invited Philip to get in and sit beside him. 32 Now the passage of the scripture that he was reading was this:

“Like a sheep he was led to the slaughter, and like a lamb silent before its

shearer,so he does not open his mouth.

33 In his humiliation justice was denied him.

Who can describe his generation? For his life is taken away from the

earth.”34 e eunuch asked Philip, “About whom, may I ask you, does the prophet say this, about himself or about someone else?” 35 en Philip began to speak, and starting with this scripture, he proclaimed to him the good news about Jesus. 36 As they were going along the road, they came to some water; and the eunuch said, “Look, here is water! THE CONVERSION OF SAUL

9Meanwhile Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the dis-ciples of the Lord, went to the high priest 2 and asked him for leers to the synagogues at Damascus, so

that if he found any who belonged to the Way, men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem. 3 Now as he was going along and approaching Damascus, suddenly a light from heaven ashed around him. 4 He fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?” 5 He asked, “Who are you, Lord?” e reply came, “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. 6 But get up and enter the city, and you will be told what you are to do.” 7 e men who were traveling with him stood speechless be-cause they heard the voice but saw no one. 8 Saul got up from the ground, and though his eyes were open, he could see nothing; so they led him by the hand and brought him into Damascus. 9 For three days he was with-out sight, and neither ate nor drank.

10 Now there was a disciple in Damas-cus named Ananias. e Lord said to him in a vision, “Ananias.” He answered, “Here I am, Lord.” 11 e Lord said to him, “Get up and go to the street called Straight, and at the house of Judas look for a man of Tarsus named Saul. At this moment he is praying, 12 and he has seen in a vision c a man named Ananias come in and lay his hands on him so that he might regain his sight.” 13 But Ananias

answered, “Lord, I have heard from many about this man, how much evil he has done to your saints in Jerusalem; 14 and here he has authority from the chief priests to bind all who invoke your name.” 15 But the Lord said to him, “Go, for he is an instrument whom I have chosen to bring my name before Gen-tiles and kings and before the people of Is-rael; 16 I myself will show him how much he must suer for the sake of my name.” 17 So Ananias went and entered the house. He laid his hands on Saul d and said, “Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on your way here, has sent me so that you may regain your sight and be lled with the Holy Spirit.” 18 And immediately something like scales fell from his eyes, and his sight was restored. en he got up and was baptized, 19 and aer taking some food, he regained his strength.

twelve tribes hope to aain, as they earnestly worship day and night. It is for this hope, your Excellency, a that I am accused by Jews! 8 Why is it thought incredible by any of you that God raises the dead?

9 “Indeed, I myself was convinced that I ought to do many things against the name of Jesus of Nazareth. b 10 And that is what I did in Jerusalem; with authority received from the chief priests, I not only locked up many of the saints in prison, but I also cast my vote against them when they were being condemned to death. 11 By punishing them oen in all the synagogues I tried to force them to blaspheme; and since I was so furi-ously enraged at them, I pursued them even to foreign cities.

PAUL TELLS OF HIS CONVERSION12 “With this in mind, I was traveling

to Damascus with the authority and com-mission of the chief priests, 13 when at mid-day along the road, your Excellency, a I saw a light from heaven, brighter than the sun, shining around me and my companions. 14 When we had all fallen to the ground, I heard a voice saying to me in the Hebrew c language, ‘Saul, Saul, why are you perse-cuting me? It hurts you to kick against the goads.’ 15 I asked, ‘Who are you, Lord?’ e Lord answered, ‘I am Jesus whom you are persecuting. 16 But get up and stand on your feet; for I have appeared to you for this pur-pose, to appoint you to serve and testify to the things in which you have seen me d and to those in which I will appear to you. 17 I will rescue you from your people and from the Gentiles—to whom I am sending you 18 to open their eyes so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Sa-tan to God, so that they may receive forgive-

ness of sins and a place among those who are sanctied by faith in me.’

PAUL TELLS OF HIS PREACHING19 “Aer that, King Agrippa, I was not

disobedient to the heavenly vision, 20 but declared rst to those in Damascus, then in Jerusalem and throughout the countryside of Judea, and also to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God and do deeds consistent with repentance. 21 For this reason the Jews seized me in the temple and tried to kill me. 22 To this day I have had help from God, and so I stand here, testifying to both small and great, saying nothing but what the prophets and Moses said would take place: 23 that the Messiah e must suer, and that, by being the rst to rise from the dead, he would proclaim light both to our people and to the Gentiles.”

PAUL APPEALS TO AGRIPPA TO BELIEVE

24 While he was making this defense, Festus exclaimed, “You are out of your mind, Paul! Too much learning is driving you in-sane!” 25 But Paul said, “I am not out of my mind, most excellent Festus, but I am speak-ing the sober truth. 26 Indeed the king knows about these things, and to him I speak freely; for I am certain that none of these things has escaped his notice, for this was not done in a corner. 27 King Agrippa, do you believe the prophets? I know that you believe.” 28 Agrippa said to Paul, “Are you so quickly persuading me to become a Christian?” f 29 Paul replied, “Whether quickly or not, I pray to God that not only you but also all who are listening to me today might become such as I am—except for these chains.”

DID YOU KNOW?CHANGE? YOU’RE CRAZY/OUT OF YOUR MIND/MAD.

Leaders like Festus were afraid of change because they might lose power. Paul said that Jesus’ death would bring light to everyone. This meant that Jesus might have more power than the priests and kings! Festus said that Paul was out of his mind for saying these things.

1e revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show his servants a what must soon take place; he made b it known by sending his angel to his servant c John, 2 who testied to the

A VISION OF CHRIST9 I, John, your brother who share with

you in Jesus the persecution and the kingdom

and the patient endurance, was on the is-land called Patmos because of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus. g 10 I was in the spirit h on the Lord’s day, and I heard be-hind me a loud voice like a trumpet 11 saying, “Write in a book what you see and send it to the seven churches, to Ephesus, to Smyrna, to Pergamum, to yatira, to Sardis, to Phil-adelphia, and to Laodicea.”

12 en I turned to see whose voice it was that spoke to me, and on turning I saw seven golden lampstands, 13 and in the midst of the lampstands I saw one like the Son of Man, clothed with a long robe and with a golden sash across his chest. 14 His head and his hair were white as white wool, white as snow; his eyes were like a ame of re, 15 his feet were like burnished bronze, rened as in a furnace, and his voice was like the sound of many waters. 16 In his right hand he held seven stars, and from his mouth came a sharp, two-edged sword, and his face was like the sun shining with full force.

17 When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. But he placed his right hand on me, saying, “Do not be afraid; I am the rst and the last, 18 and the living one. I was dead, and see, I am alive forever and ever; and I have the keys of Death and of Hades.

DID YOU KNOW?LETTER WRITING

Before emails and cell phones, people wrote letters by hand. Revelation was actually a letter written by John to churches that needed support. He started and ended this letter like many other letters in the Bible. But its images of battle, monsters, and horses make it unique!

The apostle Paul wrote many letters to followers of Jesus, including Christians in Rome. Read his greeting in Romans 1:1-7.

REVELATION 1:18

Revelation 1:11KNOW IT! What seven churches did John write to?

THINK ABOUT IT! What would you say in a letter to someone in a church in another country?

TRY IT! Make and send cards to seven people who could use encouragement.

The book of Revelation is filled with wild images, interesting characters, and unexpected action. This book describes the vision of John, an early follower of Jesus. John wrote this letter to people in churches that were facing persecution by govern-ment authorities. John uses codes to replace some names and words in case the letter fell into the wrong hands. For us today those mysterious images are hard to understand. But John’s vision helps us discover some amazing promises about God’s love. Even though he wrote about his vision for the people at the time, the book of Revelation also has important messages for us today.
