Introduction- Presenting the program

Term Four has a focus on stories from all around the world. Most centres have a focus on countries and cultures through out the year, however many children still find it a little challenging to understand that other countries may do thing differently to in Australia. At the start of each week ask them if any one is from the county your stories are from; “Today we are going to have fun with some stories from China, was any one here born in China?” Explain what is like to live in each country, the landscape, the climate, and the traditions. If you have pictures pass them around the group. If there are children from other countries encourage them to explain what it is like where they are from. There is a range of movement stories, draw and tell stories, foot stories and activities for you to choose from this term, rather than doing the whole script each week. Choose activities that best suit your group – if you have been doing foot stories all year you may wish to omit them and do other activities instead. If you're new to Fiction Factory this term you may want to include the foot stories and leave out some of the more complex activities.

What is required of me?

Using your individual talents, it is your job to bring the program to life. Each theme has been designed to fit in with the key learning areas of pre schools so it is important

to stick to the written program. Always ensure staff at the centre understands that they are to help you with supervision. This can

be as simple as asking at the start of each session “Do you think you will be able to join in today? I would love your help.”

Don’t hold back when reading the books. Any one can read a book, but only you can make it exciting and unique.

Try your best to ensure every child gets a turn at doing something. Whether it is answering a question or wearing a costume even the shyest children like to have a go.

Foot Stories: 10 min approx.

It is ok if you don’t do a foot story every week this term. You will find that some centres are a bit tired of them and others hate if you leave it out so play it by ear. Try for one every second week, with the kinders. There is enough material to get through without one if you are asking open ended questions about the stories.

As many of your children will have been doing foot stories all year they will be familiar with the process and eager to make up their own. Use the Foot stories in this script as a guide but if you have a group that likes contributing let them make up their own. A good way to control where the story goes or who gets a turn at talking is to use a ‘talking stick’ this can really be any object but it means that you can only talk if you are holding it. I like to call it the “story stick” when you have the story stick it’s your turn to contribute, if you don’t want a turn you can pass it to the person next to you.

The introduction to each foot story is the same every week. This repetition is to help build confidence to contribute to the stories later in the year. You will notice before too long the group will start saying this part of the story with you.

If you feel you need to make changes to the start of the story feel free to change the exercises that the mice do. Another option is to mix up what they are doing and see if any one notices. Eg. “Once upon a time there were two little mice and at the start of this story they were playing tennis… making a cake… fast asleep snoring!”

3

Page 4: 2016.doc · Web viewThe movement stories need to be memorized, however if they are not memorized word for word it won’t matter. It is more important that you are confident in what

To challenge the children in the older rooms try pretending the alarm clock is broken. What could they use instead?

Before each story you may like to ask the children where they think the mice will go? What would they do there? Who would they see?

Or more specific the mice are going to the park today, what should they play on? Perform in all rooms

Movement stories: 10 min approx.

The movement stories need to be memorized, however if they are not memorized word for word it won’t matter. It is more important that you are confident in what you are saying. If the presenter is unsure of the story it is hard for the children to really imagine they are in the story as they move and they will soon get bored.

Establish a word that everyone understands means they have to stop what they are doing and look at you. Eg. “Freeze”.

Allow moments for free dance/ movement. Introduce the movement concepts before you begin the story eg. “Today we are going to move on

different levels. Can you show me with your hands where a high level is? What about a middle level? Low?”

Perform in all rooms. Some toddlers may benefit from a shortened version but don’t be scared to try it with them, they love to move!

Draw and Tell: 10 min approx.

It is best to memorize the draw and tell stories, if you are not confident to learn it off by heart consider having a cheat sheet with the main plot points summarised rather then the entire story. Your eye contact with the children is very important to keep them engaged.

You can draw stories freehand or you can use the cheat sheets, lightly trace the picture you are going to be drawing in grey lead pencil, or trace it hard through one piece of paper to another so you have a guide before you get to the centre. This way you are just tracing when you tell the story rather then drawing from scratch.

Establish if you want them to call out when they know what the picture is or keep it a secret. Try to perform in all rooms. Some toddlers may benefit from a shortened version. If you have a

very young toddler group you may decide to leave the draw and tell out.

Week One – All around the worldWelcome song

Sit down and take a look we’re going to read a bookSit down and take a look at stories from ‘The Fiction Factory’

This is the first week of term four. Start by explaining that now they are such great story tellers they will get a chance to make up lots of stories every week. Today we're going to talk about all the different places in the world. Show them the globe and all the different places around the world.

Book: Whoever you are – Mem Fox

Foot Story: Two mice go on a holiday

Once upon a time there were two mice and when this story started they were fast asleep, snoring.(Legs stretched out straight in front of the body, toes pointing down to the floor and flexing back towards the chest to the rhythm of the snores.)When one little mouse woke up and said, “Hooray!” Lift right leg and shake. He tried to wake up his friend, “Wake up! Wake up!” Tap left leg and shake. But his friend was fast asleep, so the little mouse went and fetched an alarm clock.(Left leg continues to point and flex. Right leg bends and tiptoes out to the side, level with hip and returns to front centre. Both legs stretched straight in front of the body). The alarm clock went, “Brrrring.” But still the mouse slept. Shake whole body gently. So the alarm clock rang louder. “Brrrring.” But still the mouse slept. Shake the whole body a little more vigorously. So the alarm clock rang as loud as it could, “Brrrrring.” Shake whole body with force. And the little mouse jumped up, “Hooray!” Lift left foot into the air and return to the floor.“Hooray!” said her friend. “We thought it would never get here, but its finally the day we go on holidays! Lets get ready for our trip!” Turn feet towards each other, and wriggle each foot in turn as it speaks.“But first we have to do our exercises." said the little mouse.I know! Lets do them at the same time!” said his friend. The two little mice picked up their clothes and put them in their bag. They went point and flex point and flex. Start with feet on one side of the body, move to centre and point and flex feet, then move feet to other side. Then in and out, in and out, in and out. In a sitting position jump feet apart then back together. And off they set for the airport. They went; walk, walk, walk, walk, skippity-hop, skippity-hop, jump, jump, jump, Stop! x2Press one foot on to the other then in a seated position run one foot away followed by the next. Repeat x 3

But when the mice got to the airport they found that there were no flights that they could catch for their holiday. "Awww." Point feet. They could, however, get a balloon ride instead. "Yay!" they cried as they ran towards the balloon. Run your feet along the ground. They watched while the balloon was filled with hot air. Curl up in a ball and then extend arms and legs out like a balloon filling with airThey hopped into the balloon and started on their journey.First the balloon rose up in the air RisingAnd it swirled in the wind, one way Make a circle with your legs and feet to the left and then the other way Make a circle with your legs and feet to the right. They passed over their home country of Australia where they saw kangaroos and emus. Staying seated, hop like a kangaroo.

The balloon swirled in the wind Make a circle with your legs and feet as it went over the ocean and soon they saw land. It was another country. Do you know what country it was? Take suggestions from the children if they know any other countries.

It was New Zealand! The mice looked out of the swirling balloon. They saw sheep and they saw kiwi birds. Lift one leg and shake your foot, bleat like a sheep.

The balloon swirled in the wind as it went back over the ocean and soon they saw land. It was another country. Do you know what country it was? Take suggestions from the children if they know any other countries.

It was China! They were having a festival where there were fireworks and parades and a group of people were dressed up like a dragon.Scissor your legs and roar like a dragon.

The balloon swirled in the wind as it went over the ocean and soon they saw land. It was another country. Do you know what country it was? Take suggestions from the children if they know any other countries.

It was Greece and there was a great celebration. There was traditional food such as Gyros and Moussaka and all the people were dancing. Hold your arms out and sit with your legs straight out in front of you. Kick your left foot up and down. Cross your left leg and your left arm across your body. Return to your starting position and repeat on the other side. Do this as many times as you like – you can get faster as you go.

But now the mice were getting tired so they flew the balloon back to their home country of Australia. They ran back to their house and before you knew it they were back in their beds, fast asleep.…SNORING!Legs stretched out straight in front on the body, toes pointing down to the floor and flexing back towards the chest to the rhythm of the snores.THE END!

Foot Story: Two mice have a family bike ride.Once upon a time there were two mice who are brothers and when the story started they were fast asleep, snoring.Legs stretched out straight in front on the body, toes pointing down to the floor and flexing back towards the chest to the rhythm of the snores. When one little mouse woke up and said, “Hooray, what shall we do today?”Lift right leg and shake. He tried to wake up his brother, “Wake up! Wake up!”Tap left leg and shake. But his brother was fast asleep, so the little mouse went and fetched an alarm clock.Left leg continues to point and flex. Right leg bends and tiptoes out to the side, level with hip and returns to front centre. Both legs stretched straight in front of the body. The alarm clock went “Brrrring”. But still the mouse slept.Shake whole body gently. So the alarm clock rang louder. “Brrrring”. But still the mouse slept.Shake the whole body a little more vigorously. So the alarm clock rang as loud as it could “Brrrrring”.Shake whole body with force. And the little mouse jumped up, “Hooray!”Lift left foot into the air and return to the floor.“Hooray!” said his brother. “What shall we do today?”Turn feet towards each other, and wriggle each foot in turn as it speaks.

“Let’s have a family bike ride.”“But first let’s do our exercises.”

So the two little mice went point and flex.Point and flex feet. Repeat 2 times. Then in and out and in and out.In a sitting position jump feet apart and then back together again three times. And off they set to the bike shed. They went walk, walk, walk, walk, skippity-hop, skippity-hop, jump, jump, jump, jump, stop! x2-3Rhythm of different steps performed using the feet in a sitting position, with bent knees. At the shed they opened the door with a creak and they have to wipe away cobwebs.Right arm opens door slowly. Right arm up and chopping action down to the ground. Left arm up and chopping action down to the ground. Repeat 3 times. They found their bikes and headed off down the road. Lower upper body back onto floor with back resting on the floor, then lifting legs into the air from the hips.

They cycled slowly up the hill and quickly down the other side.Pedal legs in the air with bent knees at different speeds. Repeat 3 times. The mice came to a beautiful field of flowers and decided to hop off for a little walk. They went walk, walk, walk, walk, skippity-hop, skippity-hop, jump, jump, jump, jump, stop! x2-3Rhythm of different steps performed using the feet in a sitting position, with bent knees.

There was a wonderful smell and they realized it was the flowers so they bent down to smell the flowers. Place soles of the feet together, bending knees and making a diamond shape with your legs, back should be straight. Keeping soles of feet pressed together, lower head towards feet and gently pulse as you smell the flowers. Repeat 3 times. It started to rain and they could hear a waterfall close by so they decided to investigate. They went walk, walk, walk, walk, skippity-hop, skippity-hop, jump, jump, jump, jump, stop! x2-3Rhythm of different steps performed using the feet in a sitting position, with bent knees.

When they came to the waterfall it was amazing.Stand up tall with back straight with arms up and slightly bent up and over your head towards your back. Stretching the torso and legs to hold for a few seconds. The rain started getting even heavier so they walked back to their bicycles. They went walk, walk, walk, walk, skippity-hop, skippity-hop, jump, jump, jump, jump, stop! x2-3They found their bikes and headed off down the road. Lower upper body back onto floor with back resting on the floor, then lifting legs into the air from the hips. They cycled slowly up the hill and quickly down the other side.Pedal legs in the air with bent knees at different speeds. Repeat 3 times.

And when they reached home, they jumped into bed and it wasn’t long before you could hear them snoring.Lower legs to the ground as upper body lifts from the floor into an upright position. Legs resting straight on the floor in front of the body as toes point and flex to the rhythm of snoring.

Draw and tell: Grandpas giftOur next story is about some one in our family who is very old! Our Grandparents. Simon’s grandfather lives a long, long way away in a country called Russia. It gets very cold in Russia and it even snows! (Show pictures) I wonder what sort of gift his grandfather will bring for him. Let’s see if you can guess what I am drawing. But remember no calling out. If you think you know what it is just keep it a secret until the end.

1. Once there was a boy called Simon. Simon was very excited because today Grandpa was coming to stay! Grandpa lived very far away and would fly on an aeroplane all the way over to here (Draw curved line) to Simon’s house. (Draw semi circle)

2. Grandpa always brought a present for every body and Simon couldn’t wait to see what his gift would be this year. Grandpa gave a drum to Simon’s brother Tim.

3. A book to Simon’s dad.

4. His mother was given a beautiful jewellery box.

5. And for Simon… a little red ball. Simon was a little disappointed. He was too old to be playing with a ball! But he said thank you any way and joined the family for dinner.

6. They ate pizza.

7. And a pie and for dessert they had a big chocolate cake! After they had eaten they all sat around to listen to grandpas stories about all of the adventures he had been on.

9

8. The next morning when it was time for Grandpa to leave he gave Simon a second present (draw circle). It was another ball! This time it was a blue one. Maybe Grandpa didn’t realise how grown up Simon was. Simon said “Thank you for these two colourful balls Grandpa, they are really lovely but I am a big boy now and I think I’m too old to play with them.”

9. Grandpa laughed “I know you are growing up fast and that is why I have another special gift for you. You are going to come with me on the aeroplane to my home! There you will learn that these are very special balls that only big kids can use. Simon was so excited; they boarded the aeroplane and flew all the way to grandpa’s house on the other side of the world.

10. When they arrived at Grandpa’s house he gave Simon another coloured ball. This time it was a green one.

11. Simon wondered what special thing these coloured balls could do as they made their way over to a big, big tent. It was the circus!

12. When they walked inside Simon saw someone very special with three coloured balls just like his. He realised how special they were and began to practice right away.

Culture/ Movement: Russian Matrioska dolls or Nesting DollsChildren love seeing these dolls and learning about them. In each room I would at least show them the dolls and let them have a turn at holding one. Most sets come with 6 dolls. You can use the Russian family names or make up names. It is even possible to name the dolls after children in the group, when you hide them give them to that child to hold. This story should be short and to the point.

Mischievous Marysia (adapted from the story Naughty Marysia) Track:

Once there was a girl named Marysia. She had a little sister named Sestrenka, a mother named Matushka a father named Deda and a grandmother she called Baboushka. Marysia loved to play tricks on her family! It was a sunny day and Deda was working out in the fields. Move the doll over to ‘the fields’Baboushka and Matushka were very busy at home and suggested that Marysia take Sestrenka out to play. “You can go out and play with Sestrenka but be very careful not to go too far from home or lose your little sister.” Move the mother doll as if talking.Marysia took Sestrenka and off they went to play. That was when Marysia had a mischievous idea! “I will take my little sister with me and hide, no one will no where we are! Hehehe” she laughed. Move the dolls behind your back, place the smallest one inside the other.

Soon Babushka and Matushka came out to check on them, they couldn’t see the girls any where, They looked to the left “Marysia!” Move dolls to the left. They looked to the right. “Marysia!” Move to the right. But they couldn’t find the girls any where.Matushka started to worry “Oh where could they be?” Move as if talking.Babushka reassured her. “I’m sure they have just wandered off to visit Deda in the fields, lets go and look.” Move dolls towards the fields.Deda was working hard in the fields and hadn’t seen them all day. He agreed to help look and the three of them walked all over the village calling “Marysia! Marysia!” but it was no use. They couldn’t find them any where.Babushka, Matushka and Deda made their way home. They were so sad that they had lost their little girls the all began to cry. Move dolls as if crying.Marysia heard their tears and came out from her hiding spot. “BOO!”“Oh Marysia! We thought you were gone forever we are so happy you are safe!”“I’m sorry you got so worried. I only wanted to play a funny trick. You don’t have to be sad, I’m OK.”“But where is little Sestrenka?” her family replied. “Here I am! She cried jumping out from under Marysia’s skirts.”Every body laughed. What a good hiding place. Do you think we could put all of the dolls back together again? Separate dolls and jumble them up. Take turns putting them back together.

Movement/Culture: Superhero Adventure

Once upon a time there were two superheroes; Freddy Fast and Suzie Stretch.

Freddy Fast could run faster then the speed of light by simply yelling “Freddy Fast go!” and Suzie could stretch her arms and legs as far and wide as you can imagine by simply shouting “Suzie Stretch!”Let’s see if we can give it a go; one, two, three “Freddy Fast go!” Now lets try Suzie’s; one, two, three “Suzie Stretch!”If ever there was some one in trouble any where in the world their special siren would ring out “Reo, Reo, Reo!” and off they would go to save the day.One night just as our superhero friends were about to brush their teeth and go to bed their special siren rang out “Reo, Reo, Reo!” (x3)It was coming from the bank, a bad guy named Mr Evil “Mwah hahahaaaa!” he had stolen all of the money!Outside the rain was pouring down but that didn’t bother the superheroes, they put on their super secret masks and super special capes and ran out the door, off to save the day!Freddy Fast and Suzie Stretch jumped in to the hero mobile and zoomed down the street, the rain poured down “Pitter patter, pitter patter.” The wipers swished “swish swish, swish swish.” And the car engine roared “broom, broom.” When they got to the bank Freddy Fast and Suzie Stretch could see Mr Evil. “Mwah hahahaha!” He had a stick of dynamite ready to blow up the bank with.

13

Draw and Tell: The Night Walk

Molly and Sam were bored. They complained to their parents that there was nothing to do. So their dad suggested that they go with him for a walk. “Boring,” said Molly. “We need an adventure, not a walk,” said Sam. “Oh, we’re not going in daylight,” said dad. “We will go out when it is dark and just use our flashlights.” Molly and Sam thought it might be interesting but certainly not an adventure.

Dark settled in and Molly, Sam and their dad left their house [Draw leaf (1)] and headed down the street [Draw trunk (2)]. The moon [Draw moon (3)] was bright so they really didn’t even need their flashlights.

Both Molly and Sam did not think this was much of an adventure until their dad said, “Now we’ll take the path [Draw branch (4)] into Miller’s Woods. Keep together so we can light the path with our flashlights. I don’t want anyone to get lost.”

As soon as they turned onto the path, the moon was hidden by the trees surrounding them in darkness with only their flashlights lighting the way in front of them. Dad’s light cast an uneven circle [Draw owl head and body (5)] on the path while Molly and Sam’s each cast smaller circles [Draw face disks (6 & 7)].

“Look out for tree roots [Draw talons (8 & 9)] growing across the path,” said Dad. “I don’t want anyone to trip and sprain an ankle.”

Molly and Sam decided that the walk was starting to turn into an adventure for all sorts of creepy, crawly critters [Draw eyes (10 & 11)] appeared in the beams of their flashlights. Suddenly there was a loud noise. “I think that there may be some larger critters in the woods tonight,” said Dad. “That sounded like a large branch breaking. “Look, there’s a piece of it [Draw beak (12)] ahead on the path!”

“Oooo,” said Molly. “Ooo,” said Sam.

“Ooo,” answered something back.

“Maybe we should start heading back home,” said Molly. “After all, it is getting quite late,” added Sam. “I suppose we’ve had enough adventure for one night,” replied Dad. “We should probably turn back before our batteries run down. Even with our flashlights there are still lots of shadows [Draw wings (13 & 14)] tonight.”

“Whooo is walking in my woods?” asked the owl. But no one answered for Molly and Sam had already left the dark, dark woods.

Week Four- Stories from ChinaWelcome song

Sit down and take a look we’re going to read a bookSit down and take a look at stories from ‘The Fiction Factory’

This week we’re visiting China. Has anyone here ever been to China? It’s a large country with a lot of people there – 1.3 billion of them! Theres a great big wall that’s hundreds of years old that runs through the country. Rice is one of the most popular foods in China and is used in lots of their dishes.

Book: Pandemonium

Foot Story: Two mice go to the zooOnce upon a time there were two mice and when the story started they were fast asleep, snoring.Legs stretched out straight in front on the body, toes pointing down to the floor and flexing back towards the chest to the rhythm of the snores. When one little mouse woke up and said, “Hooray, what shall we do today?”Lift right leg and shake. He tried to wake up his friend, “Wake up! Wake up!”Tap left leg and shake. But his friend was fast asleep, so the little mouse went and fetched an alarm clock.Left leg continues to point and flex. Right leg bends and tiptoes out to the side, level with hip and returns to front centre. Both legs stretched straight in front of the body. The alarm clock went, “Brrrring.” But still the mouse slept.Shake whole body gently. So the alarm clock rang louder. “Brrrring.” But still the mouse slept.Shake the whole body a little more vigorously. So the alarm clock rang as loud as it could, “Brrrrring.”Shake whole body with force. And the little mouse jumped up, “Hooray!”Lift left foot into the air and return to the floor.“Hooray!” said her friend. “What shall we do today?”Turn feet towards each other, and wriggle each foot in turn as it speaks.

“Let’s go to the zoo.”“But first let’s do our exercises.”So the two little mice went point and flex.Point and flex feet. (repeat 2 times)Then in and out and in and out.In a sitting position jump feet apart and then back together again three times. And off they set. They went walk, walk, walk, walk, skippity-hop, skippity-hop, jump, jump, jump, jump, stop! (x2-3)Rhythm of different steps performed using the feet in a sitting position, with bent knees. Finally they reached the gates of the zoo. Now the two little mice had never been to the zoo before and they wondered what kind of animals they might see. Ask the children for some ideas of animals they could see.The two little mice wanted to see all the animals at once and so they climbed up the zoo gates. They climbed up, up, up, up, up, up, up up.Lying back, so that upper body connects with the floor, slowly lift the legs from the hips as if climbing from the floor to vertical position. Your body should make a right angle.

16

Page 17: 2016.doc · Web viewThe movement stories need to be memorized, however if they are not memorized word for word it won’t matter. It is more important that you are confident in what

From the top of the gates they could see everything, and everything could see them. An animal with a long, long neck stretched over towards the two mice. It was a giraffe.Stretch arms straight and upwards above the head and as you move your arms towards your feet, lower your legs back to the floor. The two mice had never seen a giraffe before, and they were frightened, so they stretched away.Point toes further towards the floor. But do you think giraffes eat mice? No! And so the giraffe pulled her neck away and the two mice ran quickly down the gate and into the zoo.Lift arms back above the head and lower the upper body back to the floor, lifting legs from the hips back into a vertical position. They went walk, walk, walk, walk, skippity-hop, skippity-hop, jump, jump, jump, jump, stop! (x2-3)Rhythm of different steps performed using the feet in a sitting position, with bent knees.

The first enclosure they came to was the lion house. The lions were just waking up.Move your body into a crawling position with head facing toward the centre of the circle. The great big daddy lion stretched out his arms, tucked under his toes and straightened his legs giving out a great BIG DADDY roar. From the crawling position, head moves between straight arms, as bottom is lifted and legs are straightened. It is important for fingers to be facing forward and for toes to be tucked under, so that the weight is on the balls of the feet. As you go into position give a big roar on an outward breath. The mummy lion stretched out her arms, tucked under her toes and straightened her legs giving out a middle-sized MUMMY roar. From the crawling position, head moves between straight arms, as bottom is lifted and legs are straightened. It is important for fingers to be facing forward and for toes to be tucked under, so that the weight is on the balls of the feet. As you go into position give a medium roar on an outward breath. And the little baby lion stretched out his arms, tucked under his toes and straightened his legs giving a tiny little BABY roar. From the crawling position, head moves between straight arms, as bottom is lifted and legs are straightened. Important for fingers to be facing forward and for toes to be tucked under, so that the weight is on the balls of the feet. As you go into position give a tiny roar on an outward breath. The mice didn’t like all this roaring and so hurried quickly to the elephant’s house. They went walk, walk, walk, walk, skippity-hop, skippity-hop, jump, jump, jump, jump, stop! (x2-3)Rhythm of different steps performed using the feet in a sitting position, with bent knees. The elephants were having their morning showers.Sitting on bottom with legs stretched straight and forward of the body. Arms resting on either side of the body. Hands by hips on the floor. They scooped up the water with their trunks and stretched over their heads, squirting the elephant next to them.Straighten left arm and lift sideways up and over the head, curving the arm and stretching the left side of the body. They scooped, stretched and squirted, and scooped, stretched and squirted. Straighten right arm and lift sideways up and over the head, curving the arm and stretching the right side of the body. Repeat 3 times on each side of the body. The two mice were getting all wet, so they hurried to the warm, dry snake house. The snakes heard the pitter patter of mouse paws and out of their holes they came.Roll over onto stomach. Head pointing to the centre of the circle, your legs straight. Hands resting on the floor underneath the shoulders. Elbows bent. Arms resting close to your sides.Snake number one.On an inward breath, press down through hands and straighten arms as you lift your upper body off the ground. Pelvis stays on the floor. Legs straight. On an outwards breath poke out tongue and flick it like a snake.

Snake number two.

On an inward breath, press down through hands and straighten arms as you lift your upper body off the ground. Pelvis stays on the floor. Legs straight. Pelvis stays on the floor. Legs straight. On an outwards breath poke out tongue and flick it like a snake.Again you can stop now as the mice were scared and walk home. The two mice didn’t like the way the snakes were looking at them, so they set off. They went walk, walk, walk, walk, skippity-hop, skippity-hop, jump, jump, jump, jump, stop! (x2-3)Rhythm of different steps performed using the feet in a sitting position, with bent knees. This time they came to the spider’s house. The spiders were curled up in their web waiting to catch some breakfast.Sitting with knees curled in towards the chest, arms hugging the knees. When they saw the mice they went creep, creep, creep, creep, creep, creep, creep, creep and SNAP!Step feet away from the body, until legs are straight and are spread like scissors. Stretch arms and hands towards toes, keeping legs straight. Arms should be fully extended on “SNAP!”Back into the centre of their web they scurried.Return to curled position. Repeat 3 times.

After all those lions, elephants, giraffes and spiders the two little mice were exhausted. Too tired to walk and jump and skip home. So they hired bicycles.Lower upper body back onto floor with back resting on the floor, then lifting legs into the air from the hips. They cycled all the way home. Slowly up the hill and quickly down the other side.Pedal legs in the air with bent knees at different speeds. And when they reached home, they jumped into bed and it wasn’t long before you could hear them snoring.Lower legs to the ground as upper body lifts from the floor into an upright position. Legs resting straight on the floor in front of the body as toes point and flex to the rhythm of snoring.

Today we are thinking about stories from Australia. Australia is the country that we live in. We have lots of animals that live only in our country like Koalas and kangaroos. How do you think that kangaroos got their tails? How do you think the birds got their colours? We are going to look at a story from Aboriginal dream time. The Aboriginals were the first Australians and they love to tell stories. Show Australia pictures.

Draw and tell story: Max and Rex

Every day, all summer long, Max and Rex went to play in the park. Here [Draw park (1)]Usually, they spent their time playing ball. But one morning Max saw something he hadn’t seen before."Rex," he said, "look at this sign [Draw sign (2)]. It is pointing to the zoo. Would you like to go and visit the zoo today, instead of playing with the ball?"

But no, Rex wanted to play ball. So Max threw the ball, and Rex went and found it. He brought it back and put it on the ground at Max's feet. Max picked up the ball and wiped off the dog spit. He threw the ball again, and Rex went and brought it back. Max wiped the dog spit off and threw it again. That was their favourite game and they could play it all morning long.

But one time when Rex was coming back with the ball, he stopped suddenly. His ears shot straight up. He opened his mouth. He dropped the ball. And then he turned and ran out of the park. "Rowf! Rowf! Rowf! Rowf! Rowf! Rowf! Rowf!" He ran off in this direction… [start drawing path (3)]

Max ran after him. He kept calling "Come back Rex! Come back!" But Rex kept on running… [continue drawing path (3)]… " Rowf! Rowf! Rowf! Rowf! Rowf! Rowf! Rowf!"When Max finally caught up with him Rex was standing under this very tall tree [Draw tree (4)] barking and barking.

Max looked up and realised why Rex was so excited. The tree was full of koalas! There must have been thirty or forty of them, sitting in the branches and making faces at Rex. "Rex!" said Max. "Those koalas must have escaped from the zoo. You stay here and guard them and I will go and tell the zoo people. "

20

Max ran off and came back a little while later with several of the zookeepers. The zookeepers put a ladder up against the tree [Draw ladder (5)] and one of them went up to talk to the koalas.

Eventually the zoo keeper convinced the koalas to come down from the tree and go back to the zoo. As the koalas headed of, one of the zoo keepers said to Max, "Thanks very much for coming to get us, Max. We've had a very busy morning! Those koalas got out of their enclosure and they opened up a whole bunch of other enclosures. There are wild animals running all over the place!"

"Wild animals? What kind of wild animals?" Max wondered. "Lions? Tigers? Alligators?""Rex," he said, "we had better go home now."But Rex was looking at a bush nearby. [Draw bush (6)] and growling.

Max thought there was something moving in there but he couldn’t tell what it was."Come on Rex…" and the two of them headed off along the path in this direction. [Draw path (7)] As they were passing another bush – here [draw bush (8)] Rex started to bark again. Max thought he might have caught a glimpse of some orange and black stripes disappearing behind the bush.

"Let’s hurry Rex!" he said. "It’s not safe!" and they went quickly back along the path. [Draw path (9)] all the way back to the park.

They looked all around [turn the paper in a circle] for the ball that Rex had dropped. "Here it is!" Max picked up the ball. [Draw ball (11)] "Now we can go home!"They didn’t see any signs of wild animals as they left the park. But something was hiding in the long grass at the edge of the park. [Draw grass (12)] and that something saw them. [Draw saw them (13)]. That something was…An Emu!

Week Six - Stories from GreeceWelcome song

Sit down and take a look we’re going to read a bookSit down and take a look at stories from ‘The Fiction Factory’

Book: The Little Grey DonkeyTalk about the scenery in the book. Explain that it is set in Greece. The Greeks were some of the first story tellers; they liked to teach lessons through their stories like the story of Icarus and the sun.

Movement/culture story: Icarus and the SunTrack: 06 Folk music from Greece by Arany Zoltán Adapted by Nicole O'Meara

There is an ancient myth from a country called Greece about a clever inventor and his curious son. Have you ever wished you could fly? Well help me tell this story and we can see what it is like to fly like a bird.

Once upon a time many, many moons ago there was a very cleaver inventor named Daedalus. Daedalus had made lots of interesting things in the past like a wooden cow that people could hide in and the first ever saw! So when King Minos wanted something built he would always ask Daedalus to design it.King Minos wanted an enormous labyrinth, a maze so difficult that if you were dropped in the middle it would be impossible to find your way out with out a map. Of course he asked Daedalus to do it for him.Daedalus worked day and night on the design and eventually it was built. The world’s most difficult labyrinth! No one would be able to solve it unless they had Daedalus special map. King Minos was a mean and selfish king. He didn’t want Daedalus to tell any body how to conquer the maze so he stole the map and dropped Daedalus and his son Icarus right in the middle of the maze. How could they get out? They began trying right away.Start music-The pop corn song.At this point in the story get everybody to stand up. Make sure they are listening to your directions so they now where to walk to get through the maze. It is best to improvise the directions you give depending on the size of the room and the number of children in the group. Below is an example of the directions you may give.

Icarus and Daedalus walked forwards five steps. One, Two, Three, Four, Five. STOP! They came to a wall. They went backwards five steps. One, Two, Three, Four, Five. STOP! They hopped to the left, they slid to the right, they wriggled on their backs and tried to jump over the walls! But it was no use, they couldn’t find their way out of the tricky labyrinth. Icarus and Daedalus needed a rest. They lay on their backs looking up at the birds flying by.

Children lay on their backs. This is intended to be quiet time. You may wish to extend this in to guided meditation if they are responding well. (eg. Icarus and Daedalus wriggled their toes then felt them relax, they relaxed their legs and knees etc.)Raise arms up and join thumbs to make birds.

Play soft music/bird calls (Track: 06 Above the clouds)They breathed in…..and out, and the birds flew by. In… and out… in and out, as the birds flew by. Every so often a feather would drop from the sky and float down to where they lay. That’s when Daedalus had an idea!Stop music.“Icarus wake up!” he called to his son. Can you try it? “Icarus Wake up!”Next they collected all of the feathers they could find.Play Track: 06 Pop corn

22

Page 23: 2016.doc · Web viewThe movement stories need to be memorized, however if they are not memorized word for word it won’t matter. It is more important that you are confident in what

They reached up high and got them off the labyrinth walls; they crouched down and picked up the tiny little feathers. They shook them off their clothes. Then they swept them in to a pile with their arms. Stop music. Then Daedalus got to work. He used melted wax from the candles in the labyrinth to stick all of the feathers together and make two sets of giant wings; one for him and one for Icarus. With these wings they would be able to fly right out of the Labyrinth, over the sea and land safely on the next island! Do you think it will work? Let’s find out.Daedalus handed the wings to Icarus and warned him “Be careful my son, you can not fly too close to the sun or the wax on the wings will melt and you will fall down into the ocean. Remember… Don’t fly to close to the sun!”If using ribbons/ feathers as wings hand them out one by one repeating each time “don’t fly too close to the sun or the wax will melt and you will fall in to the sea.”Play relaxing music/bird sounds.

Daedalus and Icarus began to move their arms. They felt heavy with the wings attached. They moved them up and down, up and down, faster and faster and faster until they flew right off the ground! Higher and higher right over the wall of the labyrinth. They flew in circles, in and out, zig zags, dips down low and up again. Whoosh!!Daedalus flew over the ocean and landed on the next island. He looked up to see Icarus flying higher and higher and higher. Do you remember what Daedalus warned Icarus? “Don’t fly too close to the sun or the wax will melt and you will fall in to the ocean”.Uh oh! Icarus kept flying higher and higher and higher, closer to the sun. He began to feel hot and suddenly remembered that he was not suppose to go near the sun; he had gotten too excited and forgot. Now it was too late, drip, drip, drip. The wax began to melt. The feathers fell apart and Icarus began to fall.Slowly sink to the ground.Down, down, down, down, down. SPLASH!!!!No one ever knew what happened to Icarus. Do you think he swam to the island? Do you think he sank to the bottom of the sea? We will never know. The End!

The little grey donkey was a little bit scared when he was going to find Sarah, and I'm sure Icarus was frightened as he flew through the sky. What do you do when you are scared?

It was the biggest thing those mice had ever seen. Keep your knees bent and lift your right leg and move it in an arc to right of centre. Return to floor. Left foot follows.

When they reached the pier there were so many boats to choose from! Should they choose the long sailboat, or the tiny rowboat? Then they came to the next boat and knew that it was the boat for them.

Before them was a giant long boat. Lie on your stomach. It had one huge mast in the middle. It had shields all along its sides. Rear up into cobra pose and circle your arms like a train. It had six sets of oars coming out of the sides. One! Two! Three! Four! Five! Six! Straighten one arm out to the side, alternating sides, as you say each number. and its front was carved like a tall dragons head Roar. There was just one more seat aboard and they were about to set sail sit back up with your feet out in front of you so the mice leapt aboard the boat. Leap one foot in the air in an arc, followed by the other.

"Righto" the captain yelled, " we need everyone to help row us out of the bay and into the sea." So the mice grabbed an oar and started to row.

Row, row, row your boatReach forward towards your feet with your arms as if rowing. As you pull back engage your stomach muscles.Gently out to seaRaise your arms alternately out to the side in stretch over the head.If you see a great big sharkOpen legs wide into a scissor stretch and then snap them togetherDon’t forget to screamSpring arms and legs open

Soon they were out at sea. The sun was shining and there was a nice breeze. "We can stop rowing and lower the sail." called the captain. "We need someone small to help unfurl it."

"We'll do it! We'll do it!" cried the mice. Lift your foot and shake it, and then repeat on the other side like the mice are jumping and talking.

So the mice ran up the mast raise your legs and released the rope and a big stripy sail came floating down slowly bring your legs back down

They sailed over the ocean. They saw turtles and whales. They saw crabs and dolphins. They even saw a big toothy shark / beautiful mermaid. Choose what animals they see and perform the yoga poses that match.

He loves to tootle away, sometimes for hours at a time.4. "Nisse", his Papa said one day. "It's nice that you read and play flute but you do it all the time. Look how messy your room has become."5. Dust balls are gathered all around the floor of his room.6. His Papa was not pleased. "Nisse," he said, if you do not tidy up this room I will have to take away your books and your flute!" 7. So Nisse got the vacuum cleaner and began to vacuum all around the room.8. Suddenly the room went dark. What has happened? thought Nisse. He looked around and realised that the light globe had burned out. He called for his Papa and do you know what? Movement story: Thors wedding Track: 07 Ólafur Liljurós

Back in a time a long time ago, before your time and even before my time lived a god named Thor and his brother Loki the trickster. Thor the Thunderer, the hallowed hammerer, the god of Thursdays, oak trees, and healing, was asleep. And he was snoring. By his side was his mighty hammer, Mjolnir (pronounced Mure-near).

With Mjolinir, Thor could knock down mountains, squash cities and bash whole armies. He was a god after all, and gods can do things like that if they want to. Giants can too. But generally speaking, gods do things bigger and better.

One night, when Thor was snoring a giant snuck in and stole Mjolnir. Thor woke up and noticed his hammer was missing. He was angry. He stomped his feet (stomp, stomp, stomp) and he shook his hands at the sky (Shake hands). But that didn’t help him find his missing hammer. So he went and woke his brother Loki and asked him what he thought he should do.

“Loki,” said Thor. “Mjolnir is missing. You must help me find it!” “This is a big problem.” said Loki. “We need Mjolnir to protect ourselves from the Giants. I bet it was even one of the Giants that stole it! I think I have a plan to find out but we need to ask the Goddess Freya for help."

So they went to visit the Goddess Freya. Freya had long golden hair and wore a cloak made of feathers.

“Freya, will you lend me your cloak?” Loki asked her. “I will lend you my cloak,” she replied. “because we gods help one another in times of trouble.”

When Loki put on the cloak he looked just like a giant bird. He flew off across the sky in his disguise to the realm of the giants.

Thrym was the giants’ king. He sat on his throne on top of a hill. When Loki sat down beside him, Thrym knew him right away.

“How are things Loki?” He asked.

“Thyrm," he replied, "We’ve lost a hammer. You wouldn’t know anything about that, would you?”

“I do know.” replied Thrym. “I did take Thors hammer while he slept. I’ve buried it eight miles underground, and I shall not return it until Freya is my wife.”

Loki spread his wings and took off. His feathers fluttered as he flew back across the skies to the realm of the gods.

Thor was waiting for Loki. “What news of my hammer?” he asked.

Loki replied: “Thrym has buried it eight miles under and will not return it unless Freya agrees to be his wife.” “Right then,” said Thor. And straight away the two gods made their way to the lovely house of Freya, she of the long golden hair.

“Freya, take this bridal veil and put on a pretty dress,” said Thor. “You must marry the giant king Thrym before he will return my hammer. He has hidden it eight miles underground, and there is no other solution. In times of trouble we gods always help one another. So put on a smile, today will be your wedding day.”

27

Page 28: 2016.doc · Web viewThe movement stories need to be memorized, however if they are not memorized word for word it won’t matter. It is more important that you are confident in what

But Freya did not want to marry a giant. "You must have lost what’s left of your tiny little mind if you think I’m going to wed a giant. You’ve lost your hammer eight miles under? Well here’s my advice to you.. Start digging.”

Something had to be done. They needed a new plan so they went to visit Heimdell, who saw everything, to ask for advice. Heimdall had a plan.

“Now come on Thor my boy, why these angry scowls and growls? Put on a smile, for today you shall wed Thrym the king of the giants.”

“I will not marry a giant!” yelled Thor.

When Loki and Heimdell had finally stopped laughing, Loki said to Thor: “Thor, don’t you see, the deception will be a fine trick to play on Thrym. If you agree to this, then I shall dress up as your bridesmaid and stand by your side on your big day. If you do not agree, then, my friend, the giants will soon be here in Asgard wielding the mighty hammer against us and smashing down the walls of this very palace.”

Thor saw that he must go along with the plan. He took the bridal veil. Freya chose a pretty dress for Thor to wear. “Truly, you are the loveliest bride I ever did see,” swore Loki. Then he too dressed as a maid. Together they left the land of the gods and reached the realm of the giants.

Thrym saw the bridal party on their way.He called out: “Giants – set out the tables for a party. I have all the possessions I could ever want for but one thing I lacked was the beautiful Freya for my wife. Giants rejoice! This shall be our wedding day.”

Track: 07 Giant wedding

The giants brought out giant drinks and food. Thor ate an entire cow. He washed down his food with three barrels of drink. Thrym marvelled at such appetite.

“Whoever saw such a greedy bride that could eat and drink so much?”

Quick as a flash, Loki the bridesmaid replied: “She was so excited for her wedding day, that she did not eat or drink in eight whole days.”

“Aww what a sweetheart! Let me give her a kiss,” declared Thrym and he lifted up the bride’s veil. But Thor wasn’t happy. Underneath the veil he was scowling hard. "Whatever is the matter?" said Thyrm.

Quick as a flash, Loki the bridesmaid replied: “She was so excited for her wedding day, that she did not sleep in eight whole days.”

“Bring Mjolnir, the hammer of Thor. Lay it on the bride’s lap so that the high priest may bless our wedding.”

As soon as the priest returned his hammer to his lap, he threw off the bridal veil and revealed him to be Thor and he and Loki took the hammer and quickly flew back to the realm of the Gods. What a fine trick they had played on Thrim.

Week Eight - Stories from AfricaWelcome song

Sit down and take a look we’re going to read a bookSit down and take a look at stories from ‘The Fiction Factory’

Africa isn’t a country, it’s a continent that is made up of many different countries. About one billion people live on the African continent and between them they speak over a thousand different languages. The longest river in the world, the Nile, is in Egypt which is on the African continent. Africa is home to the worlds largest animal, the elephant, tallest animal, the giraffe, and fastest animal, the cheetah.

Book: Handa’s SurpriseAfter reading the book go back to some of your favourite pages and point out the landscape and the types of animals living in Africa. If you have extra picture to pass around do so now.

Foot Story: Two mice go to AfricaOnce upon a time there were two mice and when this story started they were fast asleep, snoring.Legs stretched out straight in front of the body, toes pointing down to the floor and flexing back towards the chest to the rhythm of the snores. When one little mouse woke up and said, “Hooray!” Lift right leg and shake. He tried to wake up his friend, “Wake up! Wake up!” Tap left leg and shake. But his friend was fast asleep, so the little mouse went and fetched an alarm clock.Left leg continues to point and flex. Right leg bends and tiptoes out to the side, level with hip and returns to front centre. Both legs stretched straight in front of the body. “What shall we do today?” Turn feet towards each other, and wriggle each foot in turn as it speaks.“Lets go to Africa!” “But first, lets do out exercises.”The two little mice went point and flex point and flex. Point and flex feet. Then side to side, side to side. Move ankles side to side resisting the urge to make circle with the ankles. Then in and out, in and out, in and out. In a sitting position jump feet apart then back together. And off they set. They went walk, walk, walk, walk, skippity-hop, skippity-hop, jump, jump, jump, Stop! (x2)Rhythm of different steps performed using the feet in a seated position with legs bent. When the mice got to Africa they couldn’t wait to see all of the interesting animals. What sort of animals do you think they will see in Africa?Off they went exploring. They went Walk, walk, walk, walk, hop, hop, skippity-hop, hop, hop, skippity-hop, jump, jump, jump, STOP! Rhythm of different steps performed using the feet in a seated position with legs bent. The mice came to two creatures with very long necks! Do you know what they are? Giraffes! Reach arms up high above the head bending hands to make the heads of the giraffes. The giraffe’s bent down to see the mice.Forward bend brining hands towards flexed feet. The mice felt a little nervous and backed a way a little.Point toes. The Giraffes moved closer.Forward bend towards toes with pointed feet.

Do giraffes eat mice? No! So they moved away and the mice kept exploring.Reach arms up above head. They went Walk, walk, walk, walk, hop, hop, skippity-hop, hop, hop, skippity-hop, jump, jump, jump, STOP! Rhythm of different steps performed using the feet in a seated position with legs bent. The mice came to a watering hole where the saw a big fat hippo rolling in the mud! The mice joined in ‘rollie pollie, rollie pollie, rollie pollie.’Lay on back with legs tucked up to chest. Roll from side to side. The mice were covered in mud! Just then some elephants came to the watering hole to have their shower. Perfect! The mice would join in and wash off all the mud. The elephants sucked the water up in to their trunks and sprayed it over their body. Then the other side.In standing position using arm as trunk pretend to suck up water then lift arm over head and bend to the side. Swap sides. Repeat x3 each side.Once they had cleaned off all the mud they had to shake off the water. They shook it off their head. Shake, Shake, Shake. They shook it off their tails. Shake, Shake, Shake. They shook it off their whole body! Shake, Shake, Shake.Shake body parts.Time to keep walking, lets go. Walk, walk, walk, walk, hop, hop, skippity-hop, hop, hop, skippity-hop, jump, jump, jump, STOP!Rhythm of different steps performed using the feet in a seated position with legs bent.Suddenly the two mice heard the sapping of twigs and quickly they jumped and hid behind a big log.Place hands on the floor and jump legs backwards and lower body to the ground in to a crawl position.Down the river came a spotty, sleek leopard. It saw a tail poking out from the log. The leopard stretched back ready to pounce. In a crawling position wriggle tailbone from left to right. Tuck toes under and stretch your arms straight, hands pressing into the floor. Shift your bottom back towards your feet and feel the stretch up our arms and down through the spine. But the mice pulled their tails in and the leopard relaxed and padded away.Up in the trees there were lots of colourful birds and some very cheeky monkeys. The monkeys were swinging from branch to branch. The mice joined in. “WEEEEE!”Knees should be loose and slightly bent. On an inward breath raise your arms sideways and upwards above the head, so that arms stretch up vertically past the ears on each side. On an outward breath release knees and spine and let arms swing down towards the floor and then up again to an upright position. Repeat three times.Running around Africa was fun but the mice were getting very hot and it was time to go home. They went Walk, walk, walk, walk, hop, hop, skippity-hop, hop, hop, skippity-hop, jump, jump, jump, STOP!Rhythm of different steps performed using the feet in a seated position with legs bent. To be done very, very fast!It wasn’t long before the two mice were at home safe in bed…SNORING!Legs stretched out straight in front on the body, toes pointing down to the floor and flexing back towards the chest to the rhythm of the snores.THE END!

Movement/Culture: How Father Anansi brought wisdom to the world Track: 08 Africa Zulu Traditional

Long ago, one old man had all the wisdom in world. His name was Father Anansi, and in some mysterious way he was related to the trickster spider of the same name. People always came to him with questions like: “Father Anansi, what should I do to make my son behave better?” and “Father Anansi, what should I do to make my aunty well again?” and “Father Anansi, what should I do to make my sweet potato grow?” And he answered a 100 other such questions every day.

People paid him well for his wisdom, and he grew rich and his family was never hungry. But Anansi feared that one day somebody would try to steal all his wisdom, and he would no longer possess the thing that

30

Page 31: 2016.doc · Web viewThe movement stories need to be memorized, however if they are not memorized word for word it won’t matter. It is more important that you are confident in what

brought him respect and wealth. And so one day, he decided to collect together all his wisdom in one big pot and hide it in the forest.

Now his son was called Kweku Tsin, and he was as smart and as tricky as his father. He suspected that Anansi had some secret plot, and he decided to follow him. He walked behind his father and his big pot, until he came to the tallest tree in the forest. Anansi meant to climb to the top of the tree, and hang his pot of wisdom on the highest branch where nobody would see it.Anansi strapped the pot in front of his body, and then he tried to climb the tree. He climbed and he climbed. But try as he might, he could not get beyond the first branch and he fell down to the ground.

“Ouch!”

He stood up and rubbed a bruise on his back. Not one to give up easily, he started to climb again. He climbed and he climbed. This time he reached the second branch before falling back to the ground.

“Ooooh Ouch!”

A third time, Anansi tried to climb the tree, he climbed and he climbed and he climbed and on this occasion he just managed to grab the third branch before he tumbled back onto the ground.

“Oooh, Oooh, Ouch!”

His son stepped out from behind the bush where he had been hiding and said “Father, I have seen you try three times to climb the tree with the pot dangling in front of you. My sides hurt because I have been laughing so much. But let me tell you how to do this. Put the pot on your back, and then you will find it so much easier to climb the tree.”

And Anansi immediately grew angry and threw the pot down onto the ground. “What is the point of all this wisdom,” he demanded to know, “if my son knows how to do this simple thing better than I do?”

And as he spoke, all the wisdom flew out of the pot and scattered around the four corners of the world. And that is why there is, despite all appearances to the contrary, so much wisdom in the world. People know how to take care of things, how to make things work, and how to get things done. And all that wisdom is due to the bad temper of Father Anansi who threw down the pot of wisdom in a tantrum.

1. Once there was a bird named Tiki who wished more then ever to be a train driver. There was also a rhino named Buko who really wanted to see well so that he wouldn’t bang into things. Little did they know but they would become best friends!

When this story began Buko lived here on a farm.

2. One day he was running along and BONK! He ran in to a rock, he simply didn’t see it there. A few minutes later he was running along when BONK! He ran in to another rock. That was the last straw for Buko. He decided it was time to take the train into the city and get some eye glasses.

3. Early the next morning he walked to the train station and hopped on the train

4. The journey from the farm to the city was very long but Buko didn’t mind, he was too excited about getting his new glasses.

5. Meanwhile Tiki the bird was at her home in the mountains. She thought to her self “If I’m going to become a train driver I can’t spend another day at home. I will have to go in to the city and get my licence to drive a train.”

6. So Tiki left the mountains and began the long walk to the train station. When the train pulled in Tiki jumped on and joined the journey to the city.

7. When the train got to the city, Buko got off and walked straight to a big tall building. He went in this door here, and took the elevator up to the 6th floor where the optometrist/ eye doctor was. The eye doctor couldn’t believe it when he saw Buko walk in. “ I cant give you glasses! “ exclaimed the doctor “You are a rhino! There aren’t any big enough!” Buko was very sad as he walked out of the building without any glasses.

8. As Buko can’t see very well he didn’t even notice Tiki the bird walking in to the same building as him through this door.

9. Tiki went up to the tenth floor and explained that she wanted a licence to be able to drive a train. The president of the railway company looked at her and laughed. “I can’t give you a licence to drive a train! You are far too small.” “How rude!” thought Tiki as she left the building. If they wouldn’t let her drive the train then she wouldn’t ride on one either. Instead she decided to fly home

10. When it began to get dark tiki flew off the main road to sleep near a big lake.

11. Meanwhile poor Buko with his poor eye sight got lost walking back to the train station. He couldn’t see where he was going and ended up heading towards the same lake.

12. Realizing he was lost Buko began to run faster and faster and faster. Until he heard small voice cry out “STOP! STOP!” it was Tiki who had been sleeping by the lake. Buko had nearly run right on top of her! Buko was very sorry for scaring tiki and to make it up to her he offered to give her a ride home. Together they headed north to the mountains where Tiki lived.

13. “You know, Buko.” said Tiki after a little while. “Riding up here is just like riding on a train.” “And with you telling me to turn left or right I haven’t ran it to any thing!” replied Buko. It was just like Tiki was the train driver and Buko had glasses. The things that make Tiki and Buko different are what make them special to each other and they have been best friends ever since.

“Lets get ready to visit our friend Aarav, we said that we would help him make some yummy bread today!”“First let’s do our exercises.”

So the two little mice went point and flex.Point and flex feet. Repeat 2 times. Then in and out and in and out.In a sitting position jump feet apart and then back together again three times. And off they set to Aaravs house. They went walk, walk, walk, walk, skippity-hop, skippity-hop, jump, jump, jump, jump, stop! x2-3Rhythm of different steps performed using the feet in a sitting position, with bent knees.

They knocked on Aaravs door. Knock! Knock! Knock! Knock on the floor with your feet.

Aarav opened the door. "Come in my friends!" he said. "We're just about to start making the naan bread."

First they made the dough. They sprinkled in flour.Raise your legs slightly and wriggle your toes.

34

And they poured in the milk.Raise your legs high and then drop your feet, bending at the knees. And mixed it all together.

They rolled out the dough flat.Your legs are straight, forward and together in front of your body.

They smeared it with garlic.Rub hands from your toes up to your upper thighs, keeping legs straight. Bend from hips, rather than just stretching the upper back (x3)

They chopped up some coriander.Chopping action with hands from toes to upper thighs (x3)

Then they cooked it in the oven. But it wasn’t an oven like the mouses oven at home. This was a big clay pot, with a fire at the bottom called a tandoor oven.

They slapped their naan bread on the side of the oven, Slap! Slap!Sweep your arm across your body

The naan bread went up, up, up, up, until the oven went “brrrrring.”Place hands on the floor either side of body and use heels and arms to lever your bottom off the ground, keeping legs and back and head aligned.

Out came the bread. The bread smelt so wonderful when they bent down to smell it. Place soles of the feet together, bending knees and making a diamond shape with your legs, back should be straight. Keeping soles of feet pressed together, lower head towards feet and gently pulse as you smell the bread. Repeat 3 times.

"Thanks for your help today little mice." Said Aarav. "Please take some of the bread home for yourselves."

So the mice set off home with their share of the delicious naan bread. They went walk, walk, walk, walk, skippity-hop, skippity-hop, jump, jump, jump, jump, stop! x2-3Rhythm of different steps performed using the feet in a sitting position, with bent knees.

And when they reached home, they jumped into bed and it wasn’t long before you could hear them snoring.Lower legs to the ground as upper body lifts from the floor into an upright position. Legs resting straight on the floor in front of the body as toes point and flex to the rhythm of snoring. The end!

Movement story: The tortoise and the geese Track: 09 Rag Pahadi_ Traditional Indian music

Many centuries ago, there was once a King of Banaras who loved nothing better than the sound of his own voice. He had lived a long time, seen many things, read many books, and met many fascinating people. But his thoughts rambled, and he liked to talk too much.

35

Page 36: 2016.doc · Web viewThe movement stories need to be memorized, however if they are not memorized word for word it won’t matter. It is more important that you are confident in what

If one of his generals asked him about some military matter he would launch into an tale that had little relevance to that topic. By the time he had finished telling the story, he had forgotten what the question was in the first place.

When the cook consulted him, he would tell tales about the great banquets of his youth; or when a poor man came to beg for justice in a dispute over a field, he would talk about the wisdom of the great law-maker Solon. One day the king was walking in the garden of his palace when he noticed a tortoise on the roof of his palace. He was puzzled by this strange discovery, for he was certain that it was a sign from the gods, but his mind struggled to think what the meaning of it might be. At last, he called on the oldest and wisest holy man in the City of Banaras, and asked him to interpret. On seeing the tortoise, the sage recounted the following story…“Master. There was once a tortoise who lived by the side of a beautiful lake. He spent his days shaded by the long grass, and nibbling on the juicy weeds. One year the rains failed to fall in season and the sun baked the land into hard clay. The water in the lake dried first into puddles, and then disappeared altogether The animals that came there in search of a drink were reduced to skin and bones, and tottered away on weak legs. Now, this tortoise was friends with some of the geese of the lake. One day, a pair of these birds came to wish him farewell, for their flock was planning to migrate to the Himalayas in search of water and fresh grass.“And what will become of me?” asked the tortoise. “I am 100 years old, my shell is heavy, and my legs are short. If I plodded all day I would reach no further than that boulder that you see over there. I must stay here until I am all dried up.”The two geese took pity on the old tortoise and they agreed to help him. This was the plan: They would hold a stick between them as they flew. The tortoise must hold on to the stick with his mouth and in this unusual way they would transport him to cooler and wetter climes. The tortoise found himself flying through the skies. It was a most unusual feeling and he felt quite airsick. The other geese in the flock thought that the sight was hilarious.“Hey look,” said one, “I’ve seen everything now. A tortoise has grown wings”.“No he’s hasn’t,” said another, “He’s chewing on a stick because he’s hungry.”“I’m sure he would fly better if he left his heavy shell behind,” remarked a third. The comments continued, because the geese had nothing better to talk about than a flying tortoise. Eventually the tortoise could stand it no more. “See here,” he said, “Do you think I’m enjoying this?”And that, of course, was when he opened his mouth, let go of the stick, and started to fall.

He fell, and he fell and fell, until he landed, right here on the roof of your palace. If he had only minded his words, and spoke only when he had needed to, he would not have fallen and would not now be stuck up there where he doesn’t belong.”At last the king understood that the gods had sent him a sign. From then on, he was careful to make sure that he used his words concisely and to the point.

Week Ten - Stories from Japan

Welcome songSit down and take a look we’re going to read a book

Sit down and take a look at stories from ‘The Fiction Factory’

Japan is a country lying off the east coast of Asia. It consists of a long string of islands. The people of Japan call their country "Nippon", which means "the land of the rising sun". You can see the rising sun in the middle of their flag. In Japan, it is polite to greet one another by bowing. Japanese culture has made many important contributions. Bonsai is the cultivation of miniature trees. Origami is the art of paper folding. Haiku is a type of Japanese poetry. Japanese people catch and eat more fish than any other country in the world. Rice is an important crop in Japan. Farmers grow crops on terraced fields since the land is so mountainous.

Book: Origami heart

Movement story: The white hare of Oki. Track: 10 Cherry Blossoms

This movement story includes making simple origami sharks. You can have the children fold sharks while you tell the story or you can pre-fold the sharks and hand them out to the children to use. Its not necessary to use the sharks if you don’t want to.

A very long time ago, when all the animals could talk, there lived in the province of Inaba in Japan, a little white rabbit. His home was on the island of Oki, and just across the sea was the mainland of Inaba.

Now the rabbit wanted very much to cross over to Inaba. Day after day he would go out and sit on the shore and look longingly over the water in the direction of Inaba, and day after day he hoped to find some way of getting across.

One day as usual, the rabbit was standing on the beach, looking towards the mainland across the water, when he saw a great shark swimming near the island.

“This is very lucky!” thought the rabbit. “Now I shall be able to get my wish. I will ask the shark to carry me across the sea!”

But he was doubtful whether the shark would consent to do what wanted. So he thought instead of asking a favour he would try to get what he wanted by a trick.

So with a loud voice he called to the shark, and said:

“Oh, Mr. Shark, isn’t it a lovely day?”

Now the shark had come out all by itself that day to enjoy the bright sunshine, and he was just beginning to feel a bit lonely when the rabbit called out to him. The shark swam nearer to the shore, very pleased to hear someone speak.

"Were you speaking to me just now, Mr. Rabbit? You must be very lonely all by yourself!”

"Oh, no, I am not at all lonely,” said the rabbit, “but as it was such a fine day I came out here to enjoy myself. Won’t you stop and talk with me a little while?”

37

Page 38: 2016.doc · Web viewThe movement stories need to be memorized, however if they are not memorized word for word it won’t matter. It is more important that you are confident in what

The rabbit said “Mr. Shark, you live in the sea and I live on this island, and we do not often meet, so I know very little about you. Tell me, do you think the number of your family is bigger than mine?”

“Of course, there are more sharks than rabbits,” answered the shark. “Can you not see that for yourself? You live on this small island, while I live in the sea, which spreads through all parts of the world, so if I call together all the sharks who live in the sea you rabbits will be as nothing compared to us!” The shark was very conceited.

The rabbit, who meant to play a trick on the shark, said “Do you think it possible for you to call up enough sharks to form a line from this island across the sea to Inaba?”

The shark thought for a moment and then answered “Of course, it is possible.”

“Then do try,” said the rabbit, “and I will count the number from here!”

The shark, who was very simple-minded, and who hadn’t the least idea that the rabbit intended to play a trick on him, agreed to do what the rabbit asked, and said:

“Wait a little while I go back into the sea and call my family together!”

The shark plunged into the sea and was gone for some time. The rabbit, meanwhile, waited patiently on the shore. At last the shark appeared, bringing with him a large number of other sharks.

“Look, Mr. Rabbit!” said the shark, “it is nothing for my family to form a line between here and Inaba. There are enough sharks to stretch from here even as far as China or India. Did you ever see so many sharks?”

Then the whole company of sharks arranged themselves in the water so as to form a bridge between the Island of Oki and the mainland of Inaba. When the rabbit saw the bridge of sharks, he said:

“How splendid! I did not believe this was possible. Now let me count you all! To do this, however, with your permission, I must walk over on your backs to the other side, so please be so good as not to move, or else I shall fall into the sea and be drowned!”

So the rabbit hopped off the island on to the strange bridge of sharks, counting as he jumped from one shark’s back to the other: “Please keep quite still, or I shall not be able to count. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine—”

Thus the cunning rabbit walked right across to the mainland of Inaba.

Once upon a time in Japan there was a small mountain [Draw mountain (1)] and at the foot of that mountain were three houses [Draw houses (2)]. In those houses lived three farmers [Draw farmers (3)].

The farmers loved to work in their gardens. They worked hard in their gardens. In the spring they planted three rows of radishes [Draw radishes (4)] and in the other direction they planted three rows of lettuces [Draw lettuce (5)]. But they didn’t just grow vegetables in their garden. They also had beautiful ponds for growing as well. They had a round pond [Draw pond (6)] and an oval pond [Draw pond (7)]. Now time was moving on and the vegetables were growing very well but it was time for tsuyu – which is the rainy season in Japan. And the rain came and it filled up all the beautiful ponds and oh no! the ponds have overflowed, [Draw overflow (8)] and guess what was inside the pond that got away. A big fish!

Movement/Culture: New Zealand creation story.Adapted by Nicole O’Meara for the Fiction Factory

Has any one ever been to New Zealand? It is a beautiful country not too far from Australia full of adventure. This is the story of an adventurous little boy named Māui and how he pulled New Zealand out of the sea!

Music A Track: 11 Haka HouMāui had many big brothers and they were always up to something but they never let Māui join in. “You’re too small!” one would cry. “Yeah, you aren’t brave enough to come with us!’ said another. Māui never got upset for he knew he was braver and stronger than all of them and tonight he was going to prove it.The brothers had planned to go on a fishing trip out in to the middle of the ocean. It would be very rough and rocky out on the boat but Māui knew he was brave enough so while his brothers were getting ready to go Māui snuck into the canoe and hid under the fishing nets.Mean while the brothers gathered together and danced a haka to give them extra courage. Can you do it too?HakaThey were ready! The boys collected their things and jumped in to the canoe; they had no idea that Māuiwas hiding inside.A canoe is a long boat so they had to sit one behind the other. Let’s try it.Get the children to sit in two long lines one behind the other. They began to row. Push, pull, push, pull, push, pull.Slowly push arms forward and back as if rowing the boat.

Music B Track: 11 Battle HymnAs they rowed out further and further in to the ocean the waves got bigger and the boat began to rock. It swayed forward and back forward and back. Side to side, side to side. Repeat x3.Sway in different directions and speed.Māui was still hiding under the fishing nets and although he was a little frightened he did his best not tocry out. When the storm was over the brothers looked about the canoe to make sure every thing was still on board and soon enough they lifted up the fishing net and found Māui hiding there.“Māui! What are you doing there? We told you to stay home, it is too dangerous out here for you.”“I’m just as brave as you are and I bet I can catch the biggest fish of all!” answered Māui.

“Ok,” laughed the brothers. “Let’s see you try!” Māui reached into his pocket and pulled out his Grandfathers magic fishing hook. He threw it far out in the ocean.

Music BIn no time at all something began to pull on the line, something very strong. Māui had to hold on tight. He began to pull it in. Pull! Pull! Pull! Followed by three deep breaths.RepeatOne more time Māui used all of his strength to pull the enormous creature from the ocean. That sea creature became the North island of New Zealand.

The End!

Week Twelve – Stories from South America

Today we are going to visit another different continent. This time we are going to visit South America. Show the pictures and explain about the different tribes of people that live there, and that the Amazon rainforest is the biggest rainforest in the world with the worlds second longest river winding through it. The first book we read today is full of interesting facts – you don’t have to read these out but you can use them as cues to provide more information on the rainforest.

Book: The rainforest grew all around

Movement / culture: Guatemalan trouble dolls

In a small town in Guatemala on the side of a mountain lived a group of families. Each day the families would go about their chores, collecting fire wood, washing clothes and fetching water. One day every thing seemed to go wrong, the whole town was being frightened!

Rosa was looking after her baby brother as she walked home from the stream with a jar of water balanced on her head. (ask them to pretend they are balancing the water too.) all of a sudden Rosas baby brother rushed out on to the road! She was quick to grab him before he got hurt but the water jug fell off her head and broke. She was happy her brother was safe but her heart would not stop beating all the way home.

Antonio was sent to get some fire wood. He was on his way home carrying as much as his arms could hold (ask children to mimic holding wood) when out crawled a huge hairy black spider! Antonio screamed and dropped the pile of wood on the floor. As he started to pick up all of the fire wood he felt foolish for being frightened of a silly spider, never the less his legs were shaking the whole way home.

Maria and Pepito were playing hide and seek in the corn fields, they were having so much fun they hadn’t noticed the neighbour’s bull had escaped from its yard until it was standing right above them. (Ask children to enact the bull). The Bull snorted and pawed its foot in to the ground, they were sure it was about to charge! Maria and Pepito ran as fast as lightning crying all the way home.

That night all of the children in the village could not sleep, they were far too frightened. Their parents began to worry “how can we help our poor scared little children?”Then they had an idea, they asked the healing lady, the curandera to help. The healing lady made many tiny dolls, just like this one. (Show the worry doll). The children told the dolls what had happened to them to frighten them so much. It is always best to tell some one when you are scared isn’t it?Once they told their dolls all the things that had frightened them they put the dolls in to a box. “Now it is time to cover up our troubles and put them away for good, the dolls will look after them so they won’t bother you any more.” Said the Curandera.

As the placed the lid back on the box the children knew that they didn’t have to be frightened any more.

The EndIf you like you can ask the children if there is any thing that frightens them, they can tell it to the doll and take turns putting their fears in the box with the worry dolls.

Drawing Story: William and Warble

High in a tree on a cliff [DRAW cliff (1)] in the Amazon there lived a bird named William. [DRAW William (2)]

William spent most of his time hunting for worms. When he wasn't hunting, he was singing, hoping and wishing that another bird would hear his song and come to be his friend. And when he was neither hunting nor singing, he worked on his nest. [DRAW the nest (3)] He built it big just in case another bird came along to share it.

And one day another bird did come. She perched right on the edge of the nest, here... [DRAW Warble (4)] Her name was Warble.

William and Warble discovered that they liked a lot of the same things -- hunting for worms, singing and nest building. They were very happy together. The only thing they wished for was an egg, an egg that they could hatch into a chick of their very own.

Then, one day William and Warble left the nest to go on a very long worm hunt. They didn't find any very long worms, but when they got back to their nest, they found something else... [DRAW the egg (5)] ... an egg -- a huge egg sitting right there in the nest!

"A baby!" cried William, and he jumped up on that egg to keep it warm.

William and Warble took turns sitting on that egg for thirty-nine and a half days. And then, just before lunch on the fortieth day, the egg began to move!

"It's hatching! It's hatching!" hollered Warble.

The egg bounced around so much that Warble lost her balance and fell off. The egg bounced all around the nest, and, finally, bounced over the edge and fell... [DRAW down the cliff (6)] ... down... down... down...

... until it hit the ground... [DRAW hit the ground (7)] ... and cracked open! [DRAW cracked open (8)]

William and Warble flew down and perched on two scraggly trees that were growing out of the side of the cliff, here... [DRAW two trees (9)]

"Oh, Warble!" said William. "I can't look! What if our baby is hurt!"

"William!" cried Warble. "It's moving!"

And as they watched, the egg cracked open more. And a little creature... [DRAW little creature (10)] ... crawled out and fell on its head.

"What is it?" asked William.

"I don't know," said Warble. "But it's not very pretty."

"I don't think it's even a bird," said William.

"Well, it doesn't matter," said Warble bravely. "He's our baby whatever he is. Come on!"

They flew down to the little creature, and when they turned him over... [DRAW turned him over (11)] ... and got him standing on his feet, they saw that he wasn't a bird.

He was a BABY DINOSAUR!

But William and Warble loved him anyway.

They taught him to sing and they brought him worms to eat. And it took a lot of worms to feed that baby!

They were playing around and rolling in a big mud bath. They were having a grand old time! But the mice were perplexed. Why would the elephants want to roll around in the dirty mud? So they gathered up their courage and went and asked them.

"Hello up there!" said one mouse to the Daddy elephant. Raise and shake your foot like your talking. But they didn’t get any answer.

They tried again. "Hello!" the other mouse said to the mummy elephant. Raise the other foot and shake itBut they still didn’t get any answer.

"We must be too small for them to hear us. How will we get their attention?" They tried jumping up and down. jump feet up and down and waving their legs in the air wave your legs in the air but it was no use, the mummy and daddy elephants just didn’t notice them. What could they do? You could ask the children for suggestions at this point.

"I know! We should ask the baby elephant. It's much smaller and more likely hear us."

"Hello!" they tried together. Shake both feet

Elephant trumpet. "Hello down there." Said the baby elephant.

"Why are you playing in the mud?" said one little mouse.

"Its so much fun, and it helps to cool us down." Said the little elephant. "And now we get to go down to the river and wash it all off! Want to come?"

So the mice joined the line of elephants. First went the Daddy elephant, then the mummy elephant and then the baby elephant. They all joined in the line, trunk to tail. Have the kids stand up and form a circle. They should have one hand behind them and one in front and hold on to the people in front of and behind them. The elephants picked up water with their trunks and sprayed themselves with it. Whoosh! Whoosh! Scoop your arm from the floor to over your head and spray yourself with water. Movement story: Ta-in and Ta-na Track: 13 Thai Phukoa A

Once upon a time there were two men who lived in the same coastal village in Thailand. One was named Ta-in and the other was named Ta-na. They became good friends and liked to do things together.

Ta-in and Ta-na were very good fishermen so they decided to fish together in the bay. They built a small boat and caught lots of fish in the following days. They shared their catches and cooked them for their evening meal.

After many months, their luck changed, and they caught fewer and fewer fish.

One day the two men had tried every place they knew to find fish but had no luck.

Finally, Ta-in caught one fish, which they brought home. Since Ta-na had not caught a fish, Ta-in said that he would take the head and middle part of the fish and Ta-na could have the tail part. Ta-na did not like this: he also wanted the head and middle of the fish.

But Ta-in shouted that it was not fair as he was the real owner of the fish since he caught it. He deserved the head and middle, and Ta-na should be happy to take the tail. They could not agree. In fact, they became angrier and angrier and finally started to fight with each other. Their swinging blows at one another and their loud shouts brought the villagers running.

A village elder called Ta-yoo came by and also heard them fighting. He pulled the men apart saying, `Stop fighting!' Ta-in and Ta-na calmed down and agreed to let the elder solve their problem. They were afraid that otherwise they might hurt each other seriously. Ta-yoo thought about the problem for a long time.

The villagers waited in silence for his decision. Finally he spoke.

`Ta-in, you caught the fish so you take the head. Ta-na, you did not catch any fish so you take the tail part. Because I have had to solve the problem for you, I will take the middle part of the fish.'

The two men were stunned but could not think of any other solution, so they agreed. Ta-in then took the head, Ta-na took the tail part and Ta-yoo took the biggest and best part of the fish. The villagers thought that it was a fair solution and walked away.

Both Ta-in and Ta-na were very sad. `How foolish we were', said Ta-in. `I caught the fish, and Ta-yoo got the best part. I should not have been so selfish.'`No, I was the selfish one', said Ta-na. `I didn't catch a fish, so I should have been happy to take the tail part.' The two men looked at each other. They finally realised that they had both been greedy. Because of this, they were both losers that day, but they had learned a valuable lesson.

From that day on, they worked together and helped one another. They shared their catches, no matter who had caught the most fish. In time the fish returned again in great numbers, and Ta-in and Ta-na caught so many fish that they could sell most of them. They even hired other men to help them with their fishing. They not only had become good friends again, they had also become wealthy.

They were very careful not to run in to each other as they tip toed polka dots all over the floor all fast as they could!Tip toe quickly about the room.

The elves sat on their bottom and scooted around the room, then they spun in circles using their bottom like a paint brush!Seated on ground scooting then still on bottoms sin on the floor.

They even laid on their tummies and slithered around like snakes making S shapes on the floor.

When morning came the elves rushed away and hid.Sit back in the circle. Music stops.

The painter woke up and couldn’t believe her eyes. The room was covered in lines, dots, zigzags and curves.“Those naughty elves!” the painter said. “They have used my paint without asking and didn’t clean up any of their mess. I am going to teach them a lesson.”Next she emptied out all of the cans of paint and filled them up with sticky glue.Music starts. Children spread out around room.

They tried sticking a foot in the can to help pull it off. Now their foot was stuck too and they had to hop around the room!Hopping. Music ends.

Just then the painter walked in. “You naughty elves, you used my paint with out asking. But I can see that you are sorry so I will pull you out of the glue.”One by one the painter went around the room and helped the elves out of the glue.Walk around the room pretending to pull the children out of the paint.

Draw and tell: The bears gift

This is a story about a family of bears: Mother Bear, Sister Bear and Brother Bear. The story starts in the fall of the year when the bear family was getting ready to go and hibernate for the winter. All the bears were eating as much food as they could find so they would be nice and fat for their long sleep.

When she thought that her babies were finally fat enough, Mother Bear led them deep into the woods to cave at the foot of a high mountain. Every year, Mother Bear took her babies to the same cave. It was easy to find.

It was shaped like this... [DRAW cave (1)]

There were bushes growing on either side of the cave here and here... [DRAW bushes (2)]

And there was a large rock in front of the entrance. Here... [DRAW rock (3)]

So Mother Bear took her babies into the woods to the cave. She curled up in the middle of the cave. [DRAW Mother curled up (4)]

Sister Bear curled up on one side of Mother Bear. [DRAW Sister curled up (5)]

And Brother curled up on the other side. [DRAW Brother curled up (6)]

They fell fast asleep.

And soon after they fell asleep snow started to fall. More and more snow fell until the whole cave was covered in a thick, white, soft blanket. [DRAW snow (7)]

The bear family slept very peacefully together until sometime in the middle of the winter, when suddenly Brother Bear woke up. At first he couldn't think what it was that had disturbed his dreams. But as he lay there in the dark and quiet cave, he heard a noise he had never heard before... a strange jingling and jangling sound...

Brother Bear decided to go outside to see what was making this strange sound. He ran out of the cave. But... brrrr! .... it was terribly cold out there, and Brother Bear turned around and ran right back in again. [DRAW out / in (8)]

He curled up by Mother Bear to get warm, and he tried to go back to sleep, but he was worried. He could still hear that jinging and jangling sound, but now he could also hear a stamping and a snorting sound.

He woke up Sister Bear.

"Don't worry," she said. "I will go out and see what it is..."

But it was too cold out for Sister Bear, too. She ran out, and ran right back in again. [DRAW out / in (9)]

The two cubs lay in the dark, shivering and worrying until, finally, Brother Bear said, "I'm going to wake up Mother Bear!"

Mother Bear was not happy about being shaken out of her winter nap, but when she heard the strange sounds, she went out of the cave to see what it could be that was making them. She went through the woods looking behind a fallen log here, a big boulder there, a pile of snow... She couldn't see anything that would make a jingling and a jangling or a stomping or a snorting sound. But just as she was going back into the cave... [DRAW Mother looking (10)]

... she saw something moving on top of the mountain!

She went running up the mountain side. [DRAW up the mountain (11)] 51

But when she got to the top there was nothing there that could be making such a strange sound. There was a spot, though, where the snow had been all flattened, and in the middle of that spot, Mother Bear saw an odd bundle. [DRAW bundle (12)] It was wrapped in brightly coloured paper and tied all around with ribbons and strings.

Mother Bear sniffed at the strange bundle, and poked at it with her nose, and then picked it up in her teeth and carried back down to the cave to show her babies. [DRAW back to cave (13)]

Brother and Sister Bear tugged the wrapping off the package, and inside they found a thick, warm, brightly coloured quilt! [DRAW quilt (14)] It was exactly what the bear family need to keep them warm as they curled back up to sleep on that cold winter's night.

"I wonder who left that bundle up on the mountain," murmured Sister Bear.

There was a card attached to the bundle but the bears didn't see it. [DRAW see (15)] If they had, they would have known the answer to Sister Bear's question.
