management plan remains on track with dredging now under way. Desilting works, together with the resort’s floating wetland system, will ensure the best possible water quality in Dux Lake.

Construction of Stage Two villas continues and civil works on GemLife Highfields stages three, four and five continue to power ahead.

Construction of GemLife Woodend’s new lakeside country club has been completed and the opening, originally planned for July, has been delayed due to Victoria’s increase in COVID-19 transmission. But on page 26 we share a sneak-peek of the beautiful interiors and look forward to announcing an official opening date when government restrictions ease. Work continues on the outdoor recreational precinct which will include bocce and pickleball courts, in addition to a BBQ pavilion.

Last month we received exciting news that development approval was issued for a new GemLife over-50s lifestyle resort in Palmwoods, an idyllic area in the Sunshine Coast hinterland. Read more about the future GemLife Palmwoods resort on the opposite page.

I’m also pleased to announce that our new flagship resort, GemLife Gold Coast, will open its stylish new sales office from Monday, 3 August. For more details, see the story on page 3.

Director’s MessageWELCOME TO THE AUGUST ISSUE OF THE GEM. GEMLIFE PRIDES ITSELF ON CREATING A PET-FRIENDLY ENVIRONMENT AND IN THIS MONTH’S ISSUE, WITH INTERNATIONAL CAT DAY AND INTERNATIONAL DOG DAY TAKING PLACE ON 8 AUGUST AND 26 AUGUST RESPECTIVELY, WE CELEBRATE OUR FOUR-LEGGED RESIDENTS, IN ADDITION TO OUR FEATHERED AND FINNED FRIENDS.

At GemLife we understand the importance of pets in people’s everyday lives. Pets are part of the family and play a big role in providing companionship, reducing stress, as well as bringing people together socially. GemLife’s off-leash dog parks are always a big hit with our canine residents and are a spot to meet up with neighbours and make new friends. I hope you enjoy reading about some of our residents’ pets.

Construction across all our sites continued to power ahead last month.

In July on the Sunshine Coast, GemLife Maroochy Quays had its very first open day with nearly 200 hundred people registering to see our stunning new display homes. See the happenings of the day on page 22. Works progressed well on the resort’s future outdoor pool precinct, timber boardwalk and lakeside country club. A milestone was reached with the start of construction of the first country club wall. The managers’ residence and the resort entry on Charlston Place were also completed.

Our premium GemLife Pacific Paradise resort has its first display homes open day coming up on Saturday, 8 August. For those who crave extra luxurious touches and more space, register to take a look inside some of our stunning home designs at the GemLife Pacific Paradise Display Homes Grand Opening (see page 36). In July, we saw more residents moving into their new homes and it’s wonderful to watch the community start to grow. The resort’s impressive entry way was finished and the managers’ residence is nearing completion.

It was great to see the terrific turn-out for our GemLife Bribie Island Stage Four Display Homes Grand Opening last month (pictures on page 24). At GemLife Bribie Island, our lake

I love Lucy

Owners Noel and Kathryn McIntyre moved to the resort in February and hadn’t planned on getting a new pet but couldn’t resist Lucy’s Old English charm.

“We’ve had several Old English Sheepdogs over the years. After our last dog, Gemma, passed away in October, we weren’t planning on getting another one for a fair while,” said Kathryn.

“But just after we moved to GemLife I got a call from a breeder who told me they were having a litter of puppies and was asked if I wanted one. Litters of Old English Sheepdogs are hard to come by so I said yes.”

Noel and Kathryn told the breeder that they wanted a girl and because Lucy was the litter’s only female, it was a destined match.

FOUR-MONTH-OLD LUCY, AN OLD ENGLISH SHEEPDOG PUPPY, HAS BEEN STEALING HEARTS EVER SINCE HER ARRIVAL AT GEMLIFE HIGHFIELDS IN MAY.

THE GEM - AUGUST 2020

“We went to see her in March when she was just a couple of weeks old and she came home with us in May,” said Kathryn.

Kathryn said that although Lucy was just a puppy, her intelligence was undeniable.

“She is enthusiastic, a bit naughty, absolutely adorable and super smart,” she said.

“She’s already been to puppy preschool and is starting obedience school next month.”

Lucy’s father is a much-loved ‘story dog’ at a state school in Brisbane, helping children improve their literacy skills in a relaxing, comforting environment. Kathryn hopes that Lucy will follow in her father’s footsteps.

“I’m a retired teacher so I thought it would be a

good fit for Lucy and I when she gets a bit older,” said Kathryn.

Besides their famously fluffy coats, Old English Sheepdogs are recognised for their intelligence and easygoing dispositions.

“They are also known as clowns and I think that describes Lucy perfectly,” said Kathryn.

“They have the most beautiful temperaments, they are gentle souls and stay in that puppy state-of-mind all their lives, and they’re very good with kids. I always had them around when my sons were little and they’ve been wonderful with my grandkids too,” she said.

“They’re smart, easy to train and you can do lots of fun things with them like herding and agility drills.”

The McIntyres said that the pet-friendly aspect of GemLife was a major drawcard.

“If GemLife wasn’t pet-friendly we wouldn’t have come because we knew that we wanted another dog at some point,” said Kathryn.

The couple looked at a number of over-50s lifestyle resorts in the region before discovering GemLife.

“There was just something special about GemLife Highfields. It wasn’t just the facilities - though they are wonderful - it was the whole friendly atmosphere and we felt right at home here,” she said.

“We lived in Toowoomba so in terms of distance it wasn’t a big move, but in terms of lifestyle it was a huge change and it’s been wonderful.”

Cool for cats

Everyone knows our

cats now and people will

come and say hello.

How the cool kitties roll

Cats aren’t known for their spirit of cooperation, but when it comes to enjoying a neighbourhood stroll, all it takes is a “walkies” announcement from GemLife Bribie Island couple Eddie and Jan Edstein to bring their two Russian Blues running for their special cat stroller.

For Bribie residents Jan and Alf Hietzke, a bit of bribery does the trick, with their two rescue cats leaping into their stroller for a daily constitutional thanks to some tempting cat snacks.

Both couples, and their pram-passenger felines, are a regular sight on the resort’s streets, with the cats just as well-known as they are.

“Everyone knows our cats now and people will come and say hello,” said Eddie.

“The cats sit up and look out at what’s going on like they’re on a tour.”

The Edsteins’ cats, Billy and Lenny, were a little timid about their first stroller outing, but once they felt secure, responded enthusiastically to their regular walks.

“One cat is more enthusiastic than the other, but nine times out of ten they’ll both go together,” said Eddie.

HERDING CATS MAY NOT BE THE IMPOSSIBLE TASK EVERYONE BELIEVES, ESPECIALLY IF IT MEANS TAKING IN SOME FRESH COASTAL AIR AND A CHANGE OF SCENERY.

Page 7: I love Lucy · construction forecast to begin in late 2020. Visit our website to register your interest for more information. Coming soon to the Sunshine Coast hinterland A STYLISH,

“Some of the other residents’ dogs get curious about them, but the cats are used to it and feel safe inside the stroller.”

For the Hietzkes’ two eight-year-old cats, Simba and Frankie, who were accustomed to free-range outdoor living prior to moving to GemLife Bribie Island, the pet stroller was a great way to settle them both into their new home.

“It might seem a bit eccentric at first but it helped them adjust to the move. They’ve settled in really well,” said Jan.

“When I take them for a walk they know they’re safe. Cats naturally like to explore and get into things, so when I started training them to use the stroller, I put dry food in the pram to entice them,” she said.

“I still use a bit of dry food, call out ‘C’mon boys!’, and then I zip them in and head off.”

On occasion, Jan can also be seen taking her cats on a lead to a sunny spot for a roll around in the sun, an activity both cats enjoy.

GemLife’s pet-friendly environment was important to Jan, and she’s grateful for the special cat-net fencing along her back fence to keep her newly acclimated indoor cats from getting out.

“I wouldn’t have moved here if I couldn’t have the cats. Animals become part of your family and lots of people would be heartbroken if they couldn’t bring their pets with them,” she said.

Besides a recreational walk, pet strollers are a good way to get an injured or older cat out and about. When an animal’s ability to walk is compromised, an outing in a pet stroller can help lift a cat’s mood, provide some fresh air and an opportunity to see the outside world.

Pet strollers are becoming increasingly popular for both dogs and cats, and even Hollywood celebrities like actress Jennifer Garner have been spotted taking cats for walks in a stroller.

Bill and Faye Perdikis adopted Reilly two years ago and said he didn’t typically enjoy the company of other dogs but it was love at first sight when he met Lily and Kyra.

“While our house was being built at the resort we were staying at a caravan park. Three caravans down were Tony and Barbara ‘Babs’ Rossini who were also moving to GemLife. That’s where Reilly met their girls, Lily and Kyra, and instantly fell in love,” said Faye.

“It’s a true love story, Reilly is a very lucky boy,” said Babs.

Since moving into their new resort homes, the bond between the dogs and their owners has only grown stronger.

“They have regular play dates and we’ll catch-up at a dog park or at each other’s homes, and we all go to Sunday drinks together,” said Babs.

“Lily and Kyra have made other doggy acquaintances at the resort but they only have eyes for Reilly. There’s no jealousy between them, they share him equally,” she said.

Reilly had a rough start to life, fighting for his life in foster care after being discovered sick and alone on the streets of Brisbane.

“I was looking for a small rescue dog when I found Reilly on the Safe Haven Animal Rescue website,” said Faye.

“He was absolutely terrified of people. It took me an

hour and a half to be able to touch him when I went to bring him home. He has come so far and now he loves socialising with people and wants to be petted by everyone.”

From rags to riches, Reilly is now living life to the fullest with his forever family in their brand new resort home.

While Faye and Bill were already experienced dog owners, for Babs and Tony, the experience of owning dogs was a first.

“We had always been cat owners, but a few years back our son got two beautiful little Maltese Shih Tzus and we fell in love with them and decided we needed to have our own,” said Babs.

Six months later they brought home Lily and Kyra.

“We knew right away that we wanted two girls and we wanted them to be white and it took months to find them. They are super smart and look like two little cotton balls!”

At first, Lily and Kyra were apprehensive about their new home, but with a little time and comfort from Reilly, they quickly grew to love life at the resort.

“Now that we are settled, they love it and they particularly enjoy seeing Reilly and visiting the beach to go for a swim,” said Babs.

GAZING INTO A TROPICAL FISH TANK HAS A HYPNOTICALLY SOOTHING EFFECT, SOMETHING EXPERIENCED TROPICAL FISH HOBBYIST, GEMLIFE BRIBIE ISLAND RESIDENT GRAHAM HARROLD, HAS ENJOYED FOR MORE THAN A DECADE.

Despite its reputation for being notoriously finicky, according to Graham, keeping tropical fish is just a matter of doing some solid research, buying good quality equipment and opting for hardier breeds.

“The fish I have are quite tough - I chose them because they are strong. Fish can be quite territorial to an area so it’s important to keep in mind that some fish can’t be mixed with others if you want to avoid fish wars,” said Graham.

“There’s no bullies in the tank at the moment - they all have enough space to hide and get away from each other.”

A number of scientific studies have shown that staring at swimming fish is relaxing - it lowers blood pressure and even reduces heart rate, explaining why for many years dentists’ and doctors’ waiting rooms featured aquariums to create a calming environment for patients.

Graham and wife Jill have a whopping 400-litre tropical fish aquarium, taking pride of place in their living room. When full of water, the tank weighs a hefty

470 kilograms and sits upon a sturdy, reinforced cabinet.

“It’s the feature piece in our lounge and the tank is large enough so that there is always some kind of activity going on,” he said.

“It’s really nice to wake up to. It’s relaxing and very rewarding. I’ve always loved looking at tropical fish.”

Of his 13 fish, including majestic Angel Fish, serene Silver Dollars, a Dwarf Gourami, a Molly Fish, and several bottom-feeder catfish including Clown Loaches, Graham’s favourite is a large Angel Fish, a breed popular for its unique shape, long trailing fins, graceful manner and interesting personality.

“Angel fish are placid and calm and beautiful to watch,” said Graham.

To those who believe fish don’t have personalities, Graham says, “Fish have as much personality as people do - it’s just that we don’t understand them.”

Surprisingly, Graham says keeping tropical fish as a

hobby is inexpensive once the initial set-up costs are taken care of.

“As long as you don’t sacrifice quality on the equipment, it’s not expensive. It’s a good hobby and gives you more freedom than owning a cat or dog.”

Keen caravanners, Graham and Jill can take off for up to a month without worrying about the fish.

“The tank lights, aerators and feeding system work automatically, so we know the fish will be fine. We also have a great neighbour, Arthur, who will come and check on them every few days and feed them some extra worms,” said Graham.

“People shouldn’t be daunted by tropical fish. It’s rewarding and fun and there’s so much information available on YouTube and online now - people can get all the background they need.”

It’s really nice to wake up to.

Milo loves the ladies, he’s a real

THE GEM - AUGUST 2020

Flirting & flying highA lorikeet ladies’ man

Milo was an unexpected addition to the Piva family after the couple rescued him twenty years ago.

“We owned a business on the Sunshine Coast. The day we sold our business there was a huge storm and we heard a big bang on the window. Livio went outside to look and there was this dear little bird on the ground, half-dead,” she said.

Showing his bold, friendly personality right from the start, Milo jumped into Livio’s hand and climbed onto his shoulder.

“We brought him inside and nursed him back to health. He used to cough like a chain smoker,” said Kerry.

Since then the beloved bird has become king of the house and is flying high and loving life at the resort.

“He goes in and out of his cage and swings on his swing and watches TV,” she said.

MILO THE MUSK LORIKEET IS ALMOST AS WELL KNOWN AS HIS OWNERS, BRIBIE ISLAND RESIDENTS KERRY AND LIVIO PIVA, AND HAS DEVELOPED QUITE THE REPUTATION AS THE RESORT’S COLOURFUL CASANOVA.

“He likes to give us cheek and he’s very bossy, but we love him.”

The eccentric bird is also known for his picky palate.

“He doesn’t eat birdseed, he only eats fruit or lorikeet mix that I have to go to a special pet shop to get, and even that he won’t eat it unless there’s a hint of honey in it.”

Before rescuing Milo, the couple owned two white cockatoos.

“Livio loves birds but I have a phobia of them so I don’t actually pick Milo up at all. I don’t like the feel of feathers but I do love him and look after him and do everything for him except touch him,” said Kerry.

While Kerry and Milo aren’t avid cuddlers the two can often be caught having lively conversations.

“Milo can speak quite a bit. He knows ‘how you going?’, ‘what you doing?’, ‘who’s a pretty boy?’, ‘give us a kiss’ and ‘c’mon let’s go’. What he hasn’t learnt yet is the word no.”

DYED-IN-THE-WOOL BUSHIE, GEMLIFE HIGHFIELDS RESIDENT NOEL ‘WILLIE’ WILLIAMS, COMBINED HIS LOVE OF FISHING AND THE BUSH BY DONATING BOXES OF UNNEEDED LIBRARY BOOKS TO WOMEN LIVING ON REMOTE QUEENSLAND STATIONS.

Born in the rural Queensland town of Taroom, Willie, a former oil rigger who once worked in Libya’s Sahara Desert as well as south-west Queensland outback areas, has harboured a life-long love and appreciation for the beauty of the Aussie bush.

An avid fisherman, Willie regularly heads to the outback on weekends for freshwater fishing, often camping at various stations in the Western Downs region, including the 9000-hectare Warkon. When he heard about the excess books at the GemLife Highfields’ library, he knew exactly how to put them to good use.

“I loaded up boxes full of books, took them to

six stations and left them at the mailbox,” said Willie.

“The women really appreciate it and like to swap the books too. They can’t go into town all the time, so they really like it,” he said.

Willie sees the gesture as a way of saying thank you for the enjoyment he gets from camping and fishing on the stations.

“I love the bush - the isolation and the peace and quiet. I love travelling by myself,” said Willie.

Catching cod, perch and catfish among others in the Condamine River, Willie usually returns his catches back into the water.

“Fishing is a cool little sport and I love it. I also take my son fishing and camping, and the grandkids too.”

A skilled handyman, Willie built his own trailer, barbecue and other handy camping necessities both for himself and others.

“I make my own cooking equipment and I’ve built all my fishing rods and equipment by myself,” he said.

“I love the security of GemLife and the low-maintenance aspect of the houses, you can just lock-up and head out for long periods of time and not have to worry about a thing.”

hypoallergenic which makes them a popular choice for those with allergies.

“This is the first time we’ve had a toy poodle. We liked bigger dogs in the past and would mind a neighbour’s labradors from time to time, but the hair! The nice thing about a poodle is you can have them inside and they don’t shed,” he said.

“Ollie is clever and amusing - he knows all the tricks and thinks he’s the boss,” laughed Ray.

The Rasbys love the Sunshine Coast, an area they have deep connections with. With Dawn’s role as Ladies President of the nearby Coolum Beach

Bowls Club, the couple are also looking forward to the completion of the resort’s under-cover, champion-grade bowling green.

“We’re close to friends, current doctors and services and the bowling green will be a big plus too. We’re excited about our move,” said Ray.

He’s very adaptable. The pet-friendly environment at GemLife is important to us and the dog run will be great when it opens.

LIVERPOOL FOOTBALL CLUB HAS A REPUTATION FOR HAVING THE MOST DIE-HARD FANS IN THE WORLD AND IT WAS THIS PASSION THAT FORMED A BOND BETWEEN GEMLIFE MAROOCHY QUAYS RESIDENT PETER MARTIN AND GEMLIFE DIRECTOR AND CEO ADRIAN PULJICH.

Originally from Liverpool in north-west England, Peter has had a life-long love of his home team, fondly remembers attending games as a child, and to this day continues to proudly sport his club’s colours. It was a Liverpool Football Club t-shirt, worn at a sales event, that formed an instant friendship between Peter and Adrian.

“I noticed that Adrian kept looking at me on and off during the event, then he came over and introduced himself and complimented my good taste in t-shirts,” he laughed.

Famed for its definitive anthem ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’, Liverpool fans’ loyalty is legendary. One of the most famous and widely supported teams in the world, with strong working class and underdog roots, the club has a reputation as being about much more than football.

“Liverpool is special because it’s not just about the game, it’s about the people and the community,” said Peter.

Peter, who left England with his wife Jean 25 years ago, said Liverpool natives’ enthusiasm for the club goes with them all over the world as evidenced by the team’s visit to Melbourne in 2013.

“Nearly 100,000 Liverpool fans turned up to the MCG to see them, the biggest crowd ever.”

Peter was all set to head to Liverpool in May to catch the Premiership but COVID-19 put an end to those plans.

Instead, Peter tasked his daughter-in-law living in Liverpool to head to the football club’s grounds for some new club t-shirts, making a point of getting an extra one for Adrian.

“Adrian is a massive Liverpool supporter too and we have formed a friendship over football. The joy on his face when he got his shirt!” said Peter.

“It made him so happy and that’s what I wanted.”

Just like Liverpool Football Club, a sense of family and community is something that drew Peter and Jean to buying a home at GemLife Maroochy Quays.

“We loved the friendliness at GemLife. The team is great and we love Jo,” said Peter.

A builder by trade, Peter said the high build quality of GemLife’s homes was another major drawcard.

“Because I’m a builder I could see the quality for myself compared to other places we’d visited. The inclusions home owners get are also much better. This was a big standout.”

LONGING FOR FREEDOM, DENNIS AND JANELLE JONES SOLD THEIR HOME AND CUSTOMIZED A VAN AND HIT THE ROAD TO EXPLORE EASTERN AUSTRALIA, BEFORE MOVING TO GEMLIFE BRIBIE ISLAND IN MARCH TO ESTABLISH A HOME BASE.

The adventurous couple had an enduring soft-spot for Bribie Island, one of their favourite places to camp, visiting the Pumicestone Passage and watching the dolphins at Bongaree.

“My best friend, who’s name is also Janelle, and her husband told us about GemLife. We decided to take a look and just fell in love with it and ended up moving in before them,” said Janelle.

The Jones’ have travelled all around eastern Australia from Queensland to New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania and cannot wait for their next big adventure.

“We haven’t gotten around to visiting Western Australia yet but it’s definitely on our radar and we are planning a big three-month trip for next year. In the meantime, we are very grateful to have secured onsite storage for our van,” said Dennis.

Dennis and Janelle have been enjoying their new home and all the friendly faces around the resort.

“Everyone is so friendly here, you don’t step out your front door without someone giving you a smile or a wave,” said Janelle.

“As soon as we drive over the bridge to Bribie Island it instantly feels like home.”

The Jones’ had originally planned to continue to explore Australia in their van for three more months before moving to the resort but their travel plans were cancelled due to COVID-19.

“GemLife has been wonderful with getting everything sorted for us. We purchased a display home and when we told them about our situation they said ‘Give us a week to make sure everything is perfect’ and we moved in two months early,” said Janelle.

“Life’s wonderful at Bribie and we’re really enjoying it.”

The final touches are being added to this highly-anticipated country club with furnishings and interior styling currently being perfected.

A contemporary yet timeless space, designed with luxurious finishes and details, the country club will create a central lifestyle hub for residents, bringing together first-class sports, leisure and social facilities for active and engaged living.

STYLISH, INVITING AND WARM, THE LAKESIDE GEMLIFE WOODEND COUNTRY CLUB IS COMING TOGETHER BEAUTIFULLY.

“We were inspired by the natural beauty of Woodend’s surroundings, using an earth-tone palette with plenty of texture and layering for warmth, creating an ambience that feels true to the idyllic rural charm of the area’s unique setting,” said Jennifer.

“The interiors balance the country club’s generous proportions with a sense of intimacy and warmth. The classically chic interiors are bathed in plenty of natural daylight, and are decorated in a sophisticated yet relaxed style.”

The GemLife Woodend Country Club will be home to an extensive array of first-class facilities

Last month the GemLife Woodend craft group were busy sewing hand-made masks for residents to purchase. A huge hit, the masks were sold out in less than a day, with many residents missing out. The craft group is keen to meet the demand but needs your help. GEMLIFE WOODEND RESIDENT JILL MCARTHUR AND HER FRIENDLY ENGLISH SPRINGER SPANIEL, HAMISH, MOVED TO THE RESORT IN NOVEMBER AND CAN OFTEN BE SPOTTED STROLLING THE GROUNDS OR EXPLORING THE WALKING TRAILS NEARBY.

“Hamish absolutely loves walking and running and we are lucky to have lots of beautiful places nearby to walk,” said Jill. “We go walking every day and everyone knows Hamish and says hello to him and he just loves it.”

The gentle-spirited spaniel isn’t just popular with people, he has also acquired many four-legged friends. “He loves all the other pets, he’d play with every single dog here if he could. Hamish’s favourite friends to play with and walk with are Toby and Dessie,” she said.

After the passing of her husband nearly two years ago, Jill, a Mount Macedon native who’d been living in New South Wales, decided to make the move back to Victoria to return to her roots and be closer to her son.

“My son was working in Woodend and told me about GemLife. We came to have a look and I decided it was a good fit. I really liked the homes. My new home has everything that my big house had but in a smaller and easier to maintain space,” she said.

“Now Hamish is my main companion. He’s got the most beautiful temperament, he’s calm, intelligent and very loving and we’ve settled into our new home wonderfully.”

SPRING IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER AND EVERYONE IS LOOKING FORWARD TO EVEN MORE SUNNY DAYS ON THE SUNSHINE COAST.

Sales Manager’sMessage

The GemLife Maroochy Quays Display Homes Grand Opening last month was a huge success. The resort is developing quickly, the lakeside boardwalk leading all the way to the serene Eudlo Creek is getting closer and closer to completion. The concrete slab for the ten-pin bowling alley has been poured and the outdoor pool precinct is formed and will be ready for use by summer. We can’t wait for the first residents’ pool party.

Our wonderful, friendly band of residents continues to grow with new people moving into the resort each week. The twice weekly social

To get in on the action for your chance to be featured in our GemLife 2021 ‘A whole new life’ calendar, send us your favourite GemLife related photos in 2mb, jpeg format to [email protected]

Each month one winner is chosen from across all GemLife resorts, and at the end of the year, twelve photos will be selected to be featured in the calendar.

While residents will be credited in the calendar, GemLife reserves the right to alter or re-use any submitted photos and winners are not guaranteed a photo in the calendar.

GemLife Sales & Marketing Director, Andrew Coulter, said the competition is a great way for residents and future residents to share their new life experiences with others and explore their artistic sides.

“GemLife is full of creative residents and is home to a number of professional and amateur photographers. We’re looking for anything from the ordinary to the extraordinary, what we really want to see is what residents love most about their GemLife community and surrounds,” he said.

Monthly winners will receive a complimentary bottle of wine! Submissions should be sent to [email protected]

Congratulations to Bev Sundstrom from Bribie Island, winner for the month of July!
