BDL Introduction

BDL Maschinenbau GmbHLothforster Strasse 32-4041849 WassenbergTel.: +49-2432-9666-0Fax: +49-2432-9666-20Email: [email protected]

BDL has been developing, designing and producing drum motor drives in the picturesque town of Wassen-berg, just west of Düsseldorf, Germany, since 1980. At that time, drum motors were still in their infancy and were not thought of as an economic or reliable option to the more traditional geared motor system. With this in mind, BDL decided to design a new range of high quality, reliable drum motor drives that would meet the most demanding criteria at affordable prices. Today, BDL is market leader of drum motor drives within its product range and has earned the respect and com-mitment of its customers in many diverse industries throughout the world.

The Hydraulic Dum Motor

Page 6

Hydraulic drum motors

BDL as one of the largest European suppliers of hydraulic drum motors offering 16 different hydraulic drum motors in different sizes, flow volumes and speeds. This catalogue is a supplement of the BDL-main catalogue. All options (stainless steel, rubber lagging, grooves, sprockets etc.) as well as maintenance and installation instructions can be found in the main catalogue. The hydraulic drum motors vary in the flow volumes from 24 cm3 to 143 cm3 per rotation.Speeds from 0,05 m/s up to 4,4 m/s are reached at harmonious run.

Principle function

Hydraulic drum motors transform hydraulic energy (pressure, volume) into mechanical energy (torgue, number of revolutions). BDL hydraulic drum motors have a constant volume; that means, at a given hydraulic flow and a given pressure the size of the drum motors flow volume determines the number of revolutions and the torque. At a given drum motor flow volume (drum motor size) the number of revolutions is determined by the hydraulic flow and the torque is determined by the pressure.

Minimum speed

At very low speed < 0,1 m/s the hydraulic drum motor will have an uneven run. In borderline applications the hydraulic drum motor should be tested in the desired operation conditions an din the given system. The best result will be reached by a constant load, an outlet pressure of 3-5 bar and a oil viscosity of min. 35 cSt.

Maximum speed

The hydraulic losses increase with higher speed. A larger oil flow gives a larger loss of pressure over the pipes and connections. The available pressure difference becomes lower and the hydraulic drum motor torque will be reduced.

Characteristic features: - Smooth consistant running, also at a low speed - Constant torque over a wide range of various speeds - High starting torque - High efficiency - Long service life, also at extremely hard operating conditions - Robust and compact construction - Application both in open as well as on closed hydraulic systems

General Information

Seite 7

Selection of data:After calculation of the necessary power and/or the necessary torque at the desired speed (BDL-main catalogue) the chart for the optimum hydraulic drum motor can be selected on basis of the beam diagrames on page 11 of the catalog.

Charts and types:The charts are organized by types as following.:

TM 110 H 24

drum motor diameter hydraulic 24 cm3 hydraulic volume per rotation

Example:

1. Requirement: variable speed, starting at 0,5 m/s up to 1,0 m/s 2. The necessary torque at a 1,0 m/s is calculated at 150 Nm (see BDL-main catalogue)3. According to the beam diagrames on page 11 is to see that the TM 110 H 93 and the TM 160 H 130 fulfill the minimum requirements of the speed and the torque. To recognize is further that the TM 110 H 93 at this special point of work is still at the end of the area for continuous operation. The TM 160 H 130 still has got power reserv. The chart for the TM 160 H 130 is chosen.4. Select the point of work:

point of work by 1 m/s and 150 Nm flow volume pressure level power efficiency

5. Using the determined point of work in the chart, the following data can be found: - the hydraulic drum motor requires at this point of work a hydraulic volume of approx. 17 liter per minute (flow volume = vertical lines in the chart) - the hydraulic drum motor requires at this point of work a pressure difference of approx..90 bar (the absolute pressure increases with the pressure at the outlet). (pressure levels = horizontal lines in the Chart) - the hydraulic drum motor has got an efficiency at this point of work of approx. 70 % („mussel fields“ in the Chart) - D the hydraulic drum motor has a power of approx. 1,6 kilowatt at this point of work. (Hyperboles in the Chart)

If the size of the hydraulic drum motor is chosen, the power of the hydraulic pump station can be determined. In this example the hydraulic pump station must give a flow volume of min. 17 l/min. and a pressure at least of 90 bar. If the hydraulic drum motor should be installed in an available system with a given pump, the choice of the motor is limited thereby.

Choosing the right hydraulic motor size

Page 8

The efficiency and the service life of BDL hydraulic drum motors depend largely to the hydraulic pressure fluids. One of the most important criterions for choosing the right hydraulic pressure fluid in a hydraulics-systems in the viscosity. The choice of the viscosity presents always a compromise; enough liquid must be the hydraulic pressure fluid, to flow around easily and to seal viscous enough, and to guarantee a lubrication between bearing and sealing systems.

Temperature and viscosity: The ambient temperature should be between -30°C und +60°C, so that the sealing rings keep their sealing characteristics. The oil temperature should be at normal work between +30°C und +60°C. The service life of the oil is reduced greatly, if the oil temperature climbs over 60°C. Generally, the service life of the oil becomes halved per 8°C over 60°C.

Viscosity:

At the above temperature the viscosity should be between 20 - 35 cSt. We recommend a viscosity of 35 cSt at the nornal wor-king temperature.

Filtration:

To ensure problem-free life of the hydraulic drum motor, it is necessary, to keep the oil contamination on an acceptable level. The recommended maximum contamination in systems hydraulic drum motor is 18 / 13 (see ISO 4406). This class allows a maximum of 2500 contamination grains per 0,001 liter larger than 5 µm and a maximum of 80 contamaination grains per 0,001 liter larger than 15 µm. Qur experiences show, that the level of contamination is observed by 18/ 13 with a filter in the outlet more finely than 30 µm absolutely or 20 µm nominally. At very dirty environment, in complex systems or in closed circulation we recommend a finely of 20 µm absolutely or 10 µm nominally. A generally acknowledged filter supplier can make available the corresponding filter information.

Recommendations for hydraulic pressure fluids

Constructive requirements: - A pressure gauge should be fitted to the tube coming from the hydraulic pump station available.- The pipes, used for hydraulic signals must be placed so that no air bubbles assemble.

Installation: - Hemp, teflon and other unfit sealants are not allowed to be used. Please use „Usit-ring-sealings“, O-ring-sealings or similar.- The plastic protection caps at the HP-screws/connector head are to be removed first directly before installation of the tubes. - The oil must have a purity of at least 18/13 according to ISO 4406. If necessary, the oil should be filtered.

Starting: - Hydraulic pump station drive motor start and let run with lowest number of revolutions.- Gas outlet screw must be opened until foam free oil comes out.- Signs of air in the system: a) Foam in the tank b) Sporadically movement of the hydraulic drum motor c) Noise- If necessary refill with oil.- The hydraulic drive may not become loaded, before it is ventilated completely.- The hydraulic system has to be checked on density and satisfactory function.- Possibly oil filter exchange.

Maintenance:- A conscientious maintenance is necessary for the safety and long service life of the hydraulic drum motor.- Oil and filter are to be exchanged according to the instructions of the suppliers.- The condition of the oil is to be checked regular.- Density of the system and oil level have to be checked regular.
