While the International Hockey

Federation was born in Paris in 1924

under the chair of Paul Léautey, it was

primarily formed thanks to the impetus

of Frantz Reichel. At the heart of its

origin was above all a clear response

to the absence of the sport during the

1924 Summer Olympics, held in Paris.

Seven nations came together to create

the IHF, namely Austria, Spain, Hungary,

Switzerland, Czechoslovakia, France,

and Belgium. Initially based in Brussels

(until its 2005 move to Lausanne), it

uses two official languages for all its

communication: English and French.

While the IHF currently has 132 member

countries, it was originally reserved only

for men’s teams! It was only in 1982 that

it finally merged with the International

Federation of Women’s Hockey

Associations (IFWHA) to oversee all of

international hockey.

What else? During the Hockey

Revolution Congress, held in Marrakesh

last November, the IHF welcomed five

new federations: Burundi, Cameroon,

Sierra Leone, Vietnam, and Haiti.

While players are preparing for their next game on the fields of the Hockey World League, the village is receiving the fans. Sitting at a table Chinese fans are reading the Info News and a little further on Irish men are debating the last game.

Just a few steps away a pasta counter is installed, the Dumpling Company. Jacqueline and John Walder Schluper explain different stuffed dishes they offer. “Our meals certainly fill the belly.” “The ravioli with sweet and sour sauce is our children’s favorite”, Jacqueline says.

Food stalls, coffee shops, and hockey equipment stores are located just outside the stadium. Hockey Player is one of these stores. “We sell hockey equipment and clothes”, one of the saleswomen says. “But we also have more casual clothes.”

The village allows fans to eat, drink, and relax between and after the games. Players also show up to meet their friends and family. We can also experience the diversity of languages and cultures among all the shops and food stands. So come on out to the village to experience all the cultures this tournament has brought together.

French hockey finally recovers its colours. After having hard time for several years, the sport and national team can now breathe easy. For the first time since 1972, Les Bleus are in a position to qualify for the Rio Olympic Games. However, this will not be a simple task for a country that supports all team sports but hockey. Hockey is virtually unknown in the Hexagon, it has mainly become established in Lille, Paris, and Lyon. For some years, national competition suffered the mass exodus of its best players, who, amongst others, have joined the Belgian Division of Honour. But recently, the French Federation decided to initiate a sports programme and a framework as implemented by its Belgian neighbour, in order to ensure that it too could train an internationally high-performing team. At first, the FFH had a plan for 2020, but the good results recorded by the U21s, who became the 2013 vice world champions, have enabled them to raise its sporting targets. The French women were extended an last minute invitation after Azerbaijan’s forfeit. So they join their men here in Antwerp to compete at the Hockey World League.

• Hockey is a complicated sport. Obstructions, p.c., sweeps, kicks, backstick, we could get confused easily. Can we conclude that an uninformed fan would get bored watching the game? Or is that the players’ legs are also interesting? Judge for yourself!

• Belgian goalie Aisling D’Hooghe will play her 100th cap today against New Zealand.

• Red Lions, Red Panthers and Oranje support G-Hockey! You can win signed shirts from the Belgian and Dutch teams! All day you can buy a ticket for €5 euros at the FINTRO café to be placed in the drawing. At 5:30 PM the drawing will take place to support G-Hockey.

La Fédération internationale de hockey

voit le jour, à Paris, en 1924, sous la

présidence de Paul Léautey, mais surtout

sous l’impulsion de Frantz Reichel. Cette

naissance est avant tout une réponse

claire à l’absence de la discipline du

programme des Jeux d’été 1924,

organisés à Paris. Sept nations sont à

l’origine de la FIH : l’Autriche, l’Espagne,

la Hongrie, la Suisse, la Tchécoslovaquie,

la France et la Belgique. Basée à Bruxelles

(jusqu’en 2005 avant son déménagement

à Lausanne), elle utilise deux langues

officielles pour toute sa communication :

l’anglais et le français.

Si, aujourd’hui, la Fédération mondiale

regroupe 132 pays membres, elle était,

à l’origine, réservée uniquement aux

équipes messieurs ! Ce n’est qu’en 1982

qu’elle a fusionné avec la International

Federation of Women’s Hockey

Associations (IFWHA) pour, enfin,

chapeauter l’ensemble du hockey

Story of the dayC’est la fête au Village !

Alors que les joueurs(es) préparent leurs prochains matches ou jouent en ce moment sur le terrain de la Hockey World League, le village est là pour accueillir les supporters. Assis à une table, des supporters chinois, dans l’attente du match de leur équipe, lisent l’Info News, le journal du tournoi.

À deux pas de là, est installé un comptoir de pâtes, la Dumpling Company. Jacqueline Schluper et John Walder nous expliquent les différents plats de raviolis fourrés qu’ils proposent. « C’est très copieux. Cela remplit sûrement le ventre. Les raviolis à la sauce aigre-douce sont les préférés des enfants » nous précise J. Schluper.

Des stands de nourriture, des cafés mais aussi de nombreux magasins de matériel de hockey se situent aux abords du stades. Parmi ceux-ci, le magasin Hockey Player. « Nous vendons du matériel de hockey ; cela va des sticks aux vêtements de hockey. Nous avons aussi des vêtements plus ‘casual’ » nous indique une des vendeuses.

Le village permet aux supporters de se désaltérer, de manger et de se détendre entre les matches. C’est également l’endroit où des rencontres se font et où la diversité des langues et des cultures est particulièrement visible. Et surtout, l’endroit idéal pour passer une soirée agréable après une journée riche en émotions sportives !

Le hockey français retrouve, enfin, des couleurs. Après avoir mangé leur pain noir durant plusieurs années, la discipline et l’équipe nationale affichent un large sourire. En effet, pour la première fois depuis 1972, les Bleus sont en position de se qualifier aux Jeux olympiques de Rio. Pas simple, en effet, pour la discipline qui reste amateur de faire sa place dans un pays qui vibre pour une série d’autres disciplines collectives comme le football, le rugby, le basket ou le handball. Pratiquement inconnu dans l’Hexagone, le sport s’est implanté principalement à Lille, Paris et Lyon. Mais la compétition nationale souffre depuis des années d’un exode massif de ses meilleurs joueurs qui ont rejoint, entre autres, la division d’honneur belge. Depuis quelques années, la fédération française a toutefois décidé de s’inspirer des programmes sportifs et d’encadrement mis en place par son voisin belge pour parvenir, elle aussi, à construire une équipe performante au niveau mondial. A l’origine, la FFH avait un projet pour 2020, mais les bons résultats des U21, vice-champions du monde en 2013, ont permis de revoir les objectifs sportifs à la hausse. En toute dernière minute, les Françaises ont également été appelées à participer à la Hockey World League, suite au désistement de l’Azerbaïdjan.

• Joyeux anniversaire Bartosz Zywiczka! L’international Polonais a 29 ans aujourd’hui.

• Le hockey est un sport compliqué. Obstructions, p.c., sleeps, kicks, dégagement dans les 25,… on s’emmêlerait les sticks pour moins que ça ! Alors faut-il en déduire qu’un amateur non avisé ne peut que s’ennuyer en regardant le match ou le jeu de jambes est-il, lui aussi, passionnant? A vous de juger !

• La gardienne belge Aisling D’Hooghe jouera son 100e cap aujourd’hui face à la Nouvelle-Zélande.

• Les Red Lions, les Red Panthers et Oranje soutiennent également le G-hockey ! Des maillots signés par les équipes belges et néerlandaise peuvent être gagnés en participant à une tombola. Les billets, vendus au profit du G-hockey, coûtent 5 euros et peuvent être achetés toute la journée au Fintro Café. Les gagnants seront tirés au sort à 17h30.

De Internationale Hockeyfederatie (FIH)

wordt in 1924 opgericht in Parijs, onder

het voorzitterschap van Paul Léautey

maar vooral onder impuls van Frantz

Reichel. De oprichting is vooral een

duidelijke reactie op de uitsluiting van de

discipline op de Olympische Zomerspelen

van 1924 die dat jaar plaatsvinden in

Parijs. De zeven grondleggers van de

FIH zijn: Oostenrijk, Spanje, Hongarije,

Zwitserland, Tsjechoslovakije, Frankrijk

en België. De federatie is tot 2005 in

Brussel gevestigd en verhuist dan naar

Lausanne. De communicatie verloopt in

twee officiële talen: Engels en Frans.

De internationale federatie telt

momenteel 132 lidstaten, maar

aanvankelijk zijn alleen de herenteams

toegelaten! Pas in 1982 volgt de

fusie met de International Federation

of Women’s Hockey Associations

(IFWHA). Vanaf dat moment heeft de

internationale hockeywereld eindelijk

een overkoepelende bond.

Terwijl de spelers zich voorbereiden op hun komende wedstrijd of een wedstrijd spelen op het veld van de Hockey World League, staat iedereen in de Village paraat om de supporters te ontvangen. Chinese fans zitten aan een tafeltje. Ze wachten op het begin van de wedstrijd van hun ploeg en lezen de Info News, het dagelijks krantje van het toernooi.

Enkele meters verder vind je een kraampje dat pasta verkoopt, de Dumpling Company. Jacqueline Schluper en John Walder vertellen over het assortiment gevulde pasta’s. “Het is een stevige maaltijd. De ravioli‘s met zoetzure saus zijn heel populair bij de kinderen”.

Eetkraampjes, cafétjes, maar ook vele winkeltjes met hockeymateriaal bevinden zich naast het stadion. Ook de winkel van Hockey Player kan je er terugvinden: “We verkopen hockeymateriaal, van sticks tot kleding. We hebben ook meer casual kleding,” vertelt een verkoopster.

De Village zorgt ervoor dat supporters zich kunnen verfrissen, iets kunnen eten en zich kunnen ontspannen voor en na een wedstrijd. Het is ook een plaats van ontmoetingen waar verschillende culturen en talen samenkomen, maar vooral de perfecte plaats om even na te praten en te bekomen van alle sportieve emoties.

Het Franse hockey krijgt eindelijk weer wat kleur. Nadat het jarenlang zwarte sneeuw zag, lacht de toekomst het Franse hockey en de nationale ploeg weer toe. Voor de eerste keer sinds 1972 kunnen Les Bleus zich namelijk plaatsen voor de Olympische Spelen. Dat wordt in elk geval geen eenvoudige opdracht voor het land waar andere teamsporten op veel meer aandacht kunnen rekenen. Denk maar aan voetbal, rugby, basketbal en handbal. Hockey is namelijk een vrij onbekende sport in Frankrijk en alleen populair in Rijsel, Parijs en Lyon. Bovendien lijdt de nationale competitie al jaren onder de massale uittocht van haar beste spelers, die onder meer naar de hoofdklasse van België trekken. Sinds enkele jaren laat de Franse federatie zich wel inspireren door de sportprogramma’s en omkadering van haar Belgische tegenhanger. Op die manier wil de federatie ook een topteam samenstellen. Oorspronkelijk richtte de FFH zich op een project voor 2020, maar door de goede resultaten van de U21 (die in 2013 vicewereldkampioen werden) werd de sportieve lat iets hoger gelegd. In laatste instantie werden ook de Franse dames opgeroepen om deel te nemen aan de Hockey World League, ter vervanging van Azerbeidzjan.

Deze zaterdag staat in het teken van het G-hockey. Dankzij hen krijgen personen met een handicap de kans om te genieten van het hockey. Beginners of gevorderden, iedereen is welkom! Afspraak aan het Fintro Café om 12u.

Twee clinics van het G-hockey worden voorzien om 13 uur en om 15 uur.

• Hockey is een ingewikkelde sport. Obstructies, p.c., sleeps, kicks, backstick,… Je zou voor minder de kluts kwijtraken. Moeten we dan besluiten dat een onwetende liefhebber zich verveelt bij het kijken naar de match, of is het benenwerk op zich ook interessant? Oordeelt u zelf!

• Belgisch keepster Aisling D’Hooghe zal vandaag haar 100ste cap spelen tegen Nieuw-Zeeland.

• Ook Red Panthers, Red Lions en Oranje steunen G-Hockey! Bij een tombola kan je truitjes getekend door de Belgische en Nederlandse teams winnen. De

lotjes kosten €5 euro en kunnen de hele dag gekocht worden aan het Fintro Café. De trekking vindt plaats om 17u30. De opbrengst gaat integraal naar G-Hockey.
