Since September 1, 2014, international

hockey matches during major tourna-

ments take place in four 15-minute-quar-

ters rather than two 35-minute half

times. In addition, the clock stops for 40

seconds during each penalty corner and

after each goal. The objective of the IHF

is to “add more speed and intensity to

the game.” This format has already been

used successfully since 2007 in the EHL

(Euro Hockey League) and the matches

of the Hockey India League (HIL).

This change is meant to offer hockey

fans the opportunity to see more replays

of the best plays, whether on TV or in

the stadium, as well as opportunities

for commentators to explain, in more

detail, certain game sequences. Players

can also rehydrate every quarter of

an hour. Coaches can make tactical

adjustments during the match. Teams

can also celebrate their goals with even

more intensity. Belgium, for its part, has

also opted for a quarter-time format, but

with 17 minute and 30 second quarters,

as in the EHL.

What else? This new division into

quarters applies during the Champions

Trophy, the World League (second

round, semi-finals and final), all Olympic

qualifying events (Euro, etc.) and, of

course, at the 2016 Olympic Games in

Rio de Janeiro.

Saturday morning 20 June 7.45, the hockey stadium seems surrealistically empty. The

thousands of seats are still uninhabited. There is, however, frantic activity around the

pitch. Scores of volunteers, smiling and greeting each other do their best to finish their

tasks before the 10 o’clock deadline. After months of preparation the show will be

on. Cameras do a final test, the national flags are hoisted, the teams presented. The

national anthems sound a bit thin in the grey morning silence. A last high-five and a sharp

liberating whistle! Two marvelous hockey weeks have started.

As the day progresses, the

stadium gets more and more

crowded. As an appetizer a big

win for New Zealand and a hard-

fought tie between Italy and

Korea is presented to the public.

As a starter the Netherlands serve

a fresh victory to the people.

The world champion gobbles up

France in 11 big bites. The main

course is served by the Red Panthers. Driven forward by an enthusiastic crowd the

Belgian ladies cook a narrow 1-0 win against their direct rival India. The Indian men take

revenge with a win against France. At the end of the day a Pakistani dessert is tasted.

If few hockey amateurs truly know Malaysian hockey, the whole world has already

seen these incredible images of the Ultras Malaya, their enthusiastic supporters,

encouraging their team at home matches. An incomparable, impressive popular

ferment! Having made their début during the early 20th century, with a first

meeting between Selangor and Singapore in... 1904, it was then to have to wait

more than 50 years before facing up to its first Olympics in Melbourne in 1956.

A major sport, alongside football, hockey is today approaching the gates of the

world’s top 10. Yet Malaysia’s current aim is to play a key role on the world scene

and once again grasp its place in the hierarchy. It should be noted once more that

the country is home to one of the world’s most famous competitions: the Sultan

Azlan Shah Cup (from the name of the father of Malaysian hockey who died last

year, aged 86), which each year

welcomes the very best countries

of the hockey world to Ipoh.

• 16 of the 18 players of the Indian Women team play at the same club in India, Indian Railway. 10 players of the Indian Men team have the name SINGH. This is a very common name in India and means ‘lion’.

• Hockey is a ‘filthy’ sport. That is confirmed by look of the shirts of the players after a game due to (un)willing falls, slides and acrobatic moves. Can we conclude that those who leave the pitch spotless haven’t done any effort? Judge for yourself !

• Today captain Kim Jongeun plays her 200th game for the national women’s team of Korea.

• Hockey is a real family sport. In the French men team three brothers play together: Tom, Hugo and Martin Genestet. In the Irish Men team there are even twins! David Harte is the goalie, Conor Harte is a field player.

• Today the Malaysian team does not only play to defend the colors of their country, but also in honor of the son of their goalie, Kumar Subramaniam, who tragically passed away a few days ago. A moment of silence will be held as a sign of respect and support. Also in grief hockey is one big family.

4 x 15 MinutesDepuis le premier septembre 2014, les

rencontres internationales de hockey,

lors des tournois majeurs, se déroulent

en quatre quart-temps de 15 minutes

au lieu et place de deux mi-temps de

35 minutes. En outre, le chrono s’arrête

40 secondes lors de chaque p.c. et

après chaque but. L’objectif de la FIH :

« donner au jeu plus de vitesse et

d’intensité ». Un format déjà utilisé,

avec succès, depuis 2007, en EHL (Euro

Hockey League) et dans les matchs

de l’Hockey India League (IHL). Une

modification qui doit offrir la possibilité

aux amateurs de hockey de revoir plus de

ralentis des plus belles actions - que ce

soit en télévision ou dans le stade - mais

aussi aux commentateurs d’expliquer

plus en détail certaines phases de jeu,

aux joueurs de se réhydrater tous les

quarts d’heure, aux coaches de réaliser

certains ajustements tactiques en cours

de rencontre et, également, aux équipes

de fêter leurs buts avec encore plus

d’intensité. La Belgique, de son côté, a,

elle-aussi, opté pour un format de quart-

temps mais de 17 minutes 30, comme

en EHL.

What else? Ce nouveau découpage

en quart-temps est d’application lors du

Champions Trophy, de la World League

(deuxième tour, demi-finales et finale),

de tous les évènements qualificatifs

olympiques (Euro, etc.) et naturellement

lors des Jeux de Rio, en 2016.

Samedi matin 20 juin, 7h45 du matin. Image surréaliste d’un stade de hockey vide. Pas âme qui vive sur les milliers de sièges. Pourtant, les abords du terrain s’animent. Des dizaines de bénévoles enthousiastes s’affairent pour régler les tout derniers détails avant 10 heures. Après des mois de préparation, le spectacle pourra enfin commencer. Les caméras sont testées une dernière fois, les drapeaux hissés, les équipes s’alignent, les hymnes nationaux résonnent, un peu fluets dans la grisaille matinale. Encore un dernier high-five et le coup de sifflet libératoire retentit, inaugurant deux semaines de hockey magnifiques.

A mesure que la journée avance, le stade se remplit de plus en plus. A l’apéritif, le public peut déguster une addition corsée des Néozélandaises et un match nul passionnant entre l’Italie et la Corée. En hors d’œuvre, les Pays-Bas lui servent une victoire toute fraîche, ne faisant qu’une bouchée de la France. Concocté par les Red Panthers, encouragées par un public affamé de victoire, le plat de résistance vaut trois étoiles : le pays hôte bat l’Inde, les supporters se régalent. Douce revanche ensuite pour l’Inde, puisque l’équipe Messieurs l’emporte sur la France. Une journée d’ouverture très copieuse, clôturée par un dessert pakistanais.

Si peu d’amateurs de hockey connaissent réellement le hockey malaisien, tout le

monde a déjà vu ces images tout simplement hallucinantes des Ultras Malaya,

leurs bouillants supporters, encourageant leur équipe lors des matches à domicile.

Une ferveur populaire incomparable et impressionnante ! Apparu au début du 20e

siècle, avec un premier affrontement entre Selangor et Singapore en… 1904, il

aura tout de même fallu attendre plus de 50 ans avant que le pays ne fasse ses

premiers pas olympiques aux Jeux de Melbourne en 1956. Sport majeur aux côtés

du football, le hockey est, aujourd’hui, toujours aux portes du top 10 mondial.

Mais la Malaisie ambitionne, à présent, de jouer les premiers rôles sur la scène

mondiale et de grimper encore dans la hiérarchie. A noter encore que le pays abrite

l’une des plus célèbres compétitions mondiales : la Sultan Azlan Shah Cup (du

nom du père du hockey malaisien

décédé, l’an dernier, à l’âge de 86

ans) qui accueille, chaque année,

à Ipoh, les meilleures nations de

la planète hockey.

Alors, faut-il en déduire que ceux qui quittent le terrain tout proprets en fin de match n’ont pas fait beaucoup d’efforts ? A vous de juger !

• Kim Jongeun, la capitaine de l’équipe féminine de la Corée, joue aujourd’hui son 200e match pour son pays .

• Le hockey est un vrai sport familial. Trois frères jouent ensemble dans l’équipe de France : Tom, Hugo et Martin Genestet . En Irlande, il y a même des jumeaux ! David Harte est gardien de but, Conor Harte est un joueur de champ.

• Aujourd’hui, l’équipe malaise ne jouera pas uniquement pour défendre les couleurs de son pays, mais aussi en l’honneur du fils de son gardien, Kumar Subramaniam, tragiquement décédé il y a quelques jours. Un moment de silence sera observé en signe de respect et de soutien. Dans la douleur aussi, le hockey est une grande famille.

4 x 15 Minutes

Sinds 1 september 2014 duren alle inter-

nationale hockeywedstrijden op grote toer-

nooien vier keer 15 minuten in plaats van

twee keer 35 minuten. Bovendien zet men

de klok 40 seconden stil bij elke strafcorner

en na elk doelpunt. Doelstelling van de FIH:

“Het spel sneller en intenser laten verlo-

pen.” Deze spelvorm wordt sinds 2007 met

succes gebruikt in de EHL (Euro Hockey

League) en tijdens de wedstrijden van de

India Hockey League (IHL).

Dankzij deze wijziging kunnen de hockey-

fans de mooiste acties in slow motion her-

bekijken, zowel op de televisie als in het

stadion. Commentatoren kunnen zo ook

meer uitleg geven bij bepaalde spelfases.

Spelers krijgen de kans om elk kwartier te

drinken, coaches om bepaalde tactische

wijzigingen door te voeren tijdens de wed-

strijd en teams om hun doelpunten nog

uitbundiger te vieren. Ook België heeft ge-

kozen voor een indeling in kwarten, maar

dan wel van 17 minuten en 30 seconden

(zoals in de EHL).

What else? Deze nieuwe indeling

in kwarten wordt toegepast tijdens de

Champions Trophy, de World League

(tweede ronde, halve finales en finale),

alle olympische kwalificatietoernooien

(Euro enz.) en uiteraard ook tijdens de

Zaterdag morgen 20 Juni om 7.45, het hockey stadion lijkt surrealistisch leeg. Op de duizenden zitjes is geen levende ziel te bekennen. Toch is er activiteit rond het veld. In ijltempo zorgen tientallen vrijwilligers, naar elkaar lachend en groetend, dat hun laatste taken worden voltooid vóór het 10 uur is. Na maanden van voorbereiding zal de show dan eindelijk beginnen. De camera’s worden nog één keer getest, de vlaggen gehesen, de ploegen stellen zich op, de volksliederen klinken een beetje iel in de grijze ochtend stilte. Nog een laatste high five en het bevrijdende fluitsignaal klinkt. We zijn vertrokken voor twee prachtige hockey weken.

Naargelang de dag vordert, loopt het stadion meer en meer vol. Als aperitief krijgt het publiek een ruime zege van Nieuw-Zeeland en een felbevochten gelijkspel tussen Italië en Korea voorgeschoteld. Als voorgerecht serveert Nederland een verse overwinning. Oranje slokt Frankrijk op in 11 grote happen. Het hoofdgerecht wordt opgediend door de Red Panthers. Voortgestuwd door het publiek bakken de Belgische dames de drie punten tegen directe concurrent India. Het gejuich van de toeschouwers zorgt voor een pittige saus bij de maaltijd. De Indische mannen nemen met een overwinning tegen Frankrijk revanche voor het verlies van de dames. Als toetje wordt een Pakistaans dessert geproefd.

Ook al kennen weinig hockeyliefhebbers het Maleisische hockey van dichtbij, de

hallucinante beelden van de Ultras Malaya, onstuimige supporters die hun team

luidkeels aanmoedigen tijdens de thuiswedstrijden, gingen al de hele wereld

rond. De sport is er dus immens populair! Hockey deed zijn intrede in het land

aan het begin van de twintigste eeuw – met de eerste wedstrijd tussen Selangor

en Singapore in 1904 – maar het duurde nog meer dan vijftig jaar voor Maleisië

zijn eerste stappen op het olympische toneel zette. In 1956 in Melbourne was

dat. Naast voetbal is hockey de grootste sport van Maleisië. De nationale ploeg

heeft dan ook zicht op een plaats in de top tien van de wereld. Toch wil Maleisië

nog enkele plaatsen stijgen, zodat het zich in de hoogste regionen van de

wereldranglijst kan nestelen. Bovendien beschikt het land over een van ‘s werelds

bekendste toernooien: de Sultan

Azlan Shah Cup (vernoemd naar

de peetvader van het Maleisische

hockey, die vorig jaar op 86-jarige

leeftijd overleed) in Ipoh. Elk jaar

zijn de beste ploegen ter wereld

van de partij.

• Hockey is een ‘smerige’ sport. Dat wordt bevestigd door de staat van de truitjes van de spelers na (on)gewilde valpartijen, slides en acrobatische bewegingen. Moeten we besluiten dat zij die het veld proper verlaten niet veel inspanningen hebben geleverd? Oordeelt u zelf !

• Aanvoerster Kim Jongeun speelt vandaag haar 200ste wedstrijd voor de nationale ploeg van Korea.
