As Hull bids to be the City of Culture we are delighted to offer you a varied and exciting programme showcasing the very best of theatre, comedy and drama.

The season starts with the highly-anticipated visit by the Stephen Joseph Theatre’s excellent production of Muddy Cows. Diving face-first into the fierce, funny and filthy world of women’s rugby, this comedy from local favourite John Godber will brighten up your autumn as we head into the darker nights.

During the festive period children and adults alike are in for a real treat with two Hull Truck productions. In the daytime, the Big Bad Wolf finally goes on trial for his deceptive mischief in our musical production of Little Red Riding Hood, in which you get to choose the outcome! Then, in the evenings, Mick Martin’s brand new comedy The Flame-Haired Dynamo is the perfect show for anyone wanting to escape the seasonal mayhem with a fun-packed production that takes you from the usual Christmas tensions to the excitement of the good old Christmas annual.

Meanwhile, we’re proud to be welcoming such exciting companies as Filter and RashDash and hope our family-friendly children’s programme will introduce some new young faces to their very first live theatre experience. Add to this plenty of stand-up comedy, music, dance and inspiring shows from our Creative Learning department, and you’ll discover a season that truly does have something for everyone.

Now, we simply must say more about Hull’s bid for City of Culture 2017. Achieving this coveted title would mean big things for the city, not only in terms of arts and culture, but also investment, development and a huge boost in local pride and community spirit. Please do anything you can to back the bid, including talking about #Hull2017 on your social media channels.

Also, at Hull Truck we pride ourselves on offering you the highest quality work at the lowest possible prices and it’s your support that makes us one of the UK’s leading producing theatres. My Theatre Matters is an excellent campaign that invites you to shout about the value of Hull Truck, so please do visit www.mytheatrematters.com and tell them why we matter to you.

Finally, we want you to be the first to know that we will soon have a very exciting new cafe-bar, so please do make our theatre your second home, be it for a coffee, a catch-up or a really great piece of entertainment.

We look forward to welcoming you to Hull Truck Theatre soon.

Welcome to your theatre

chris mccann’s life is going nowhere. He’s out of work, out of money and out of luck. His kids don’t understand him and his wife’s at her wits’ end. Worst of all, it’s christmas. Is Chris in the mood for mistletoe and wine? No. He can’t afford them for a start! He’s blown what cash he had on old Christmas Annuals so he can revisit the world of his boyhood heroes, especially Titch McCreavie, the Flame-Haired Dynamo – a superstar footballer, 1970s style!

As Christmas Day approaches, Chris withdraws into the cartoon world of perfect goals, perfect girls, flared jeans and fondue parties – with some rather surprising results!

This Christmas, Hull Truck invites you to join Chris on a hilarious and heartfelt journey – part Back to the Future, part A Christmas Carol, all brilliantly unhinged – from Mick Martin, the writer of 2012 Northern Soul smash Once Upon a Time in Wigan.

The Flame-Haired Dynamo – out of the comic strip and into the theatre from November 28th. Book now!

How bad is the big bad Wolf?He blows pigs’ houses down, thinks nothing of eating seven little kids, and don’t forget what he did to poor Red Riding Hood: frightening her in a wood, hiding her Gran and trying to gobble her up. Let’s face it, his name says it all – he’s big and bad.Isn’t he?Isn’t he?This year, the people who brought you The Elves & the Shoemaker, A Christmas Carol and Pinocchio are back to ask you one simple question – should the Wolf be sent down for his crimes, or is he the victim of a terrible smear campaign? With silly songs, ridiculous rhymes, lots of bonkers fairytale characters and a Judge made of Fudge, this is one Christmas trial you’d be mad to miss... plus, you – yes, you – get to choose the end of the show!

A surgeon, a farmer, a vet, a beautician, a primary school teacher, a social worker and a solicitor: on the face of it, they don’t seem to have much in common. but these are the muddy cows - a team of female rugby players with all the courage, passion and commitment of their male counterparts.

And absolutely none of the cash, back-up or kit... Maggie Deakin is planning to step down as coach of the Muddy Cows. But there’s one final challenge to face - the unbeatable New zealand side, The Black Ferns. Can the Muddy Cows overcome? or will their own personal conflicts prove their undoing?BAFTA-winning playwright John Godber has written extensively about sport: weightlifting in Cramp, bodybuilding in Beef, crown green bowling in Crown Prince and judo in Blood, Sweat and Tears. He also wrote and directed the iconic rugby league comedy Up ‘n’ Under, which won an olivier Award and was made into a feature film.
