TECH UPDATE: MMSD G1FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Why do students need digital devices? Our students are preparing for a world that is globally connected through technology. Businesses and colleges require proficient use of digital skills as they look to hire employees or enroll students. We must prepare students for these transitions to college, career and community

Will students be able to take their devices home?K-1 will keep devices in the classroom. Students in grades 2-8 may have the opportunity to take devices home based on school/parent approval. This can extend the learning day and may help students practice skills and learn from each other outside of class.

Will students be taking their devices from class to class?Yes. Students will take their devices to each class when needed. Teachers will control the use of the devices in their classrooms.

How will devices be stored when students are not using them?Devices will be stored in designated classroom spaces, lockers, or in charging cart when not in use.

How do students charge their devices?Students will store and charge devices in the classroom cart overnight. If students take home devices, the device should be charged before school each day.

Will students be able to keep the same device from year to year?Students will not have the same device

year to year. Students will be required to return their devices at the end of the school year in the same condition as it was originally given to them. Students will be asked to remove any personal information or data before returning the device. Also, all labels, decals, and markings must be removed

Will the internet protection filters be used to keep kids safe?Yes. We take every measure to keep our students safe from harmful material on the internet. However, the filters are not perfect. Students will be encouraged to speak to an adult if inappropriate materials are found so the district can block the site.

Are there district expectations and guidelines for students and families?Yes. A Family Digital Device Guidelines document will be introduced at a school orientation in the fall of 2015-16. These guidelines outline the proper use and care, loss, damage, and theft of devices. Parents and students will sign the student agreement in acknowledgement of these guidelines.

What if a device is damaged? If the damage is accidental, our warranty will cover the repair. If the damage is intentional, the family/student will be responsible for the cost of repair/replacement.

Will headphones be provided for students?Headphones are provided for assessment in grades 3-8. Headphones/earbuds are added to the school supply list.

$20,000Huegel is excited to announce that we are the lucky recipients of a $20,000 grant from the American Girl Fund for Children. We will be using these funds to help transform our

library space into a 21st Century learning space.

We are very much looking forward to unveiling

our new library in the fall!

$5,000Thank you Lowe’s Toolbox for Education!www.toolboxforeducation.com

Huegel is the recipient of a $5,000 grant to upgrade our garden and outdoor classroom! If you haven’t stopped by yet, check out our new raised beds (one for each grade level) and Aldo Leopold benches, funded by your donations and this grant. On May 1, we had a community work day with families and classes pitching in. Many kids had an opportunity to get their hands dirty.

This summer, we will do more work to make the outdoor area a comfortable and educational place, including putting in a shed, mulch, compost bins, and a variety of plants. Stay tuned to Facebook for opportunities to help out or email Garden Coordinator Amy Buscher at [email protected].

PTO CORNER BY: JENNIFER SEEKER CONROY, PTO PRESIDENT

WELCOME TO THE PTO BOARD MEMBERS FOR 2015-2016!

President: Tony Parisi

President-Elect: Open

Secretary: Jenn Howlett

Treasurer: Janel Smith

Volunteer Coordinator: Stephanie Watrud

Fundraising Coordinator: Emily Hooverson

Marketing Coordinator/Newsletter Editor: Denise Henning-McGee

School District Liaison: Connie Phair

Dear Huegel Families,

What a great year it has been! We are coming to the last few days of school, and it is a great time to reflect on the year that was and look forward to the next school year, which will be here before we know it!

It has been great fun and an honor to be your PTO president this year. We had a lot of fun events from Movie Nights, to Fall Festival, and Spring Fling. We also had educational evenings covering the Tech Plan and assessments. We supported students through teacher requests, after-school club funding, field trip payments, and many other initiatives.

This year as a board we focused on a couple key efforts to improve our school. We approved funding for a new school sign that you should see in the next several months. We also worked on improving and expanding our garden and outdoor classroom.

Huegel has an exciting future ahead in 2015-2016 just in time for the school’s 50th birthday! There are exciting projects in the works through the passage of the school district referendum and a grant from American Girl to remake our library.

If you didn’t get as engaged as you would have liked to this year, make sure to dig in next year. We are truly the ones who own the future of our school and our community. Involved and energetic families will improve our school for our children and our children’s children!

Thank you for a great year! Have a wonderful summer, and here’s to a wonderful 2015-2016 school year!

--Jennifer Seeker Conroy

I wanted to thank everyone for the hard work of fundraising and collecting of box tops. We were able to raise enough money to be able to hold events at little or no cost, support children for field trips, and other

FINANCIALS PTO

needs, along with purchasing some large items to better our school. Some of these items include: $6775.70 towards a sign out front that will keep families updated on upcoming events, support towards our Millennium soccer program, meals to show teachers how much we appreciate their time and hard work, and we have some other ideas in mind such as a 3D printer for the kids to expand their creativity in our library. Without your continued support we wouldn’t even be able to cover small items like headphones or treats during long tests, so thank you. Keep an eye out for all the changes we have in store for the library, garden and outside classroom due to grants and the approved referendum.

Thanks to all the Box Tops donated we were able to raise $950.00! The children have been able to receive a traveling trophy for their classroom during winning months along with a special earning of sundaes for one class one month. Mrs. Grindle’s class has won the overall year’s clippings of 1,220 Box Tops earning more books for their classroom. Way to go everyone who has helped by keeping an eye out and handed in those Box Tops! Keep up the good work collecting this summer.

Please save your BoxTops

over the summer. We will be

having a BoxTops Classroom

Competition again in

September!

The BoxTops can add up!

Huegel receives 10 cents for every BoxTop
