A MESSAGEfrom Ms. Potter-DavisWarm summer greetings!
I hope this newsletter finds everyone enjoying summer; it has certainly flown by! We have a lot to look forward to this upcoming school year, including a transformed library and office space, new Huegel staff members, updated technology, and many fun events throughout the year that will bring our wonderful Huegel community together.
The first big change you will notice is our new office space. As part of the referendum that passed in April, the office was renovated so that our school building is more secure. You will notice that all visitors will be directed right into the office upon entry. This change will allow us to check in and welcome each visitor to Huegel. Greeting visitors will be our new head secretary, Kristie Schallert. Carol Georgeson, who was at Huegel for many years, decided to retire after school ended and will be spending much-deserved quality time with her granddaughter. While we will miss Carol, we are excited to welcome Kristie, who comes to us from Olson Elementary. Working with Kristie in the office will be Michelle Simon, who is replacing Nicole Triller. Other new staff members include Kim Zinski (1st grade), Alice Severson (2nd grade), Lucy Ouellette (3rd grade), Dominique Lark (4th grade), Thelma Jenkins (Special Education Assistant), and Sheila Jager (Special Education Assistant). continued to next page...
2 HUEGEL HIGHLIGHTS
Best,
Abby Potter-Davis, Huegel [email protected]
Another very exciting change is our new library, which has been undergoing a total transformation this summer thanks to funding from the referendum as well as a $20,000 Fund for Children grant from American Girl. Because the district has been on such a tight construction schedule this summer, it is likely that the transformation will not be fully completed until October 1, at which point we will host a big “unveiling event”. Never fear, however, students will still be able to check out books in those early weeks of school!
In addition to the office and library, our entire “inner circle” will be receiving a facelift throughout the year. This will include adding pipes for a new heating system, upgrading the fire alarm system, upgrading our cables for wireless capability, and new hallway and classroom lighting. In order to complete some of this work during the school year, the current plan is to keep the ceiling tiles removed all year. I have been assured that this is completely safe for students and staff, and ultimately I think students will enjoy seeing the progress take shape all year!
With all of those cosmetic changes, we are also very excited about all of the new technology that students will access next year. Each 2nd through 5th grader will receive their own Android tablet to support their learning; there will be 10 tablets in every Kindergarten and 1st grade classroom. Our staff have been very busy this summer learning and planning how to effectively integrate technology into teaching and learning. Families will have multiple opportunities to learn about how we are using the technology throughout the year. The first opportunity will be at our Back to School Picnic, which will take place on Thursday, August 27 between 4:30-6:00. Stop by to find out your child’s teacher and meet him or her, drop off school supplies, take a family photo, and eat a hot dog with other Huegel families. The picnic is always a wonderful way to kick off the school year.
Enjoy these remaining days of summer. We look forward to seeing you very soon!
