Council Report

R epresentatives from Talisman Energy met with Council to discuss their devel-

opment north of Hudson’s Hope. Talisman is looking at the concept of building a water pipeline from Williston Lake to north of Beryl Prairie; presently they are hauling the water by truck. Oil and gas activity in this area will be ongoing for up to 15 years or maybe more. Talisman must first apply and be ap-proved for a water licence from the Provin-cial Government and they will also be meet-ing with BC Hydro to discuss this issue. We will keep everyone informed of this project.

C ouncillors Summer, Webster and Jo-hansson will join me in Whistler from

September 27th to Oct 1st for the yearly con-ference of BC cities, municipalities and towns. We have meetings with various Min-istries of the government to bring forward issues of concern for Hudson’s Hope. We will be speaking with the Minister of Finance

regarding the grant in lieu we receive from BC Hydro which is considerably lower than other hydro communities. This is just one of many meetings planned.

A group of local seniors travelled to Co-mox to attend the summer games.

DISTRICT OFFICE RENOVATION

T he District Office is being renovated therefore we have temporarily moved

downstairs! We hope to be back upstairs sometime around the week of October 11th. We ask for your patience and understanding while this process is going on. We will still be open for business, municipal as well as ICBC and Motor Vehicle, although you can expect some down time when the actual move of equipment and telephones take place. If you have any questions please feel free to call the office at 250-783-9901.

T he HH Public Library will be open again on Sunday afternoons from September -

June. Our hours are: Sunday 1:00 - 5:00 p.m. Monday 1:00 - 5:00 p.m. Tuesday 1:00 - 5:00 p.m. Storytime 10:30 - 11:30 a.m. Wednesday 1:00 - 8:00 p.m. After School Club 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. Thursday 1:00 - 8:00 p.m.

T he migration to our new database is completed, once we have our website

upgraded it will be possible to search our catalogue from your home and to renew

books, search our catalogue, request and put books on hold.

T he library will be hosting an open house later this month to showcase the new

website and help residents to better access our databases that are available on our web-site.

W ith the high cost of magazines why not just borrow one from the library.

D on Petit has written a new book about the wind farm and the building of it in

Dawson Creek. The book is full of great pic-tures of the huge turbines and what goes into the building of such a massive project. Don will be at the library later in October with his slides and to share his insight. We have not acquired a firm date but watch the post office and PSA’s for further information.

O ctober is the celebration of reading! Celebrate with us by reading to your chil-

dren everyday or pick up a book yourself and read. No book? We have lots to share with you and its FREE!!!!

T he choir is open to everybody. If you enjoy raising your voice in song, come

and join us Tuesdays at 7:00 at the St Peters Church Hall.


Museum

T here have been some big changes at the museum over the last month.

The Bedaux Exhibit has been taken down and will be traveling to UNBC, a new display will be going in soon. We are still selling Limited Edition Bedaux T-Shirts; get them before they’re gone!

Preparations for the October Harvest Social are in high gear. The dinner will start at 5:00 pm, Saturday, October 23rd at the Pearkes Centre. There is no charge to attend. How-ever, a donation jar will be available at the door. We do ask that you to bring your own dishes and cutlery and a dessert if you would like. Nedra has another delicious meal planned.

We will be celebrating the 1930's that eve-ning, so come dressed according and have some fun! Special guest this year will be Jay Sherwood, who will be introducing his latest book on surveyor Frank Swannell and high-lights of his exploits in the Hudson’s Hope area in that time period. As well, there will be auction and bucket items, a 50/50 draw and of course the draws for the three day wilderness river trip, the tent and camping gear and the bistro table and chairs. Raffle tickets are only $10, available at the mu-seum, from Historical Society members, or last chance at the Harvest Social, but note that drawing is scheduled for 7:00 pm.

Also the new museum manager has arrived so stop in and meet her. Elinor Morrissey comes from a museum background and has previously worked at the Maple Ridge Mu-seum, The Vancouver Police Museum and Dartmouth Heritage Museum. She is excited

to be working with the museum’s collection. Don’t forget the Museum is online; check out the website at www.hudsonshopemuseum.com to see for yourself!

Soke Cup held in Kumamoto City, Japan in August. Soke Cup is an International Chito-ryu Karate Tournament held every 3 years. Competition took 3 days to complete. Par-ticipating countries included: Australia, Nor-


way, China & USA to name a few. Over a period of 10 days the NRKD group trained in sacred places & took part in several sightsee-ing activities. The contingent proved them-selves to be excellent Canadian Ambassadors & competitors. Reviving The Spirit Get ready for “Senior Moments.” They are what you are experiencing if you are already a sen-

ior, what you will be experiencing in the not too distant future if you are not quite a senior,

and what you can only imagine if you are still far from being a senior. It is also the name of

the first show of our fifth season - a new, award-winning comedy by Don Fried.

“Senior Moments” is made up of five short plays that will leave you smiling and laughing for days. For this production we will once again try something different in Hudson’s Hope – live music before and during the show. The unique, heart-felt songs of singer-songwriter Fred Bas-sett will blend with the plays to provide an evening that you will not soon forget – unless you have a senior moment. Watch for posters and ticket information later in the month, and check next month’s Bulletin for more details about this show. Write it down now…there is no better place to spend a mid-November evening when it’s minus twenty-five outside than at The Pearkes Centre laughing and celebrating the magic of theatre. Public Notice of Field Study Activities

BC Hydro is conducting environ-mental and engineering field studies on and around the Peace River,

downstream of the W.A.C. Bennett Dam to the Alberta border, as part of the planning and evaluation of the Site C Clean Energy Project (Site C). Environmental and engineering field studies to be completed may require access to private and Crown land. Permission and permits will be arranged in advance. For information about field studies underway, and to learn more about the Site C project, please visit www.bchydro.com/sitec or visit the Hudson’s Hope Community Consultation Of-fice in the Pearkes Center. The office is open Monday to Wednesday and Friday, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and is staffed on Tuesday between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

BC Rivers Day “Celebrating the Peace”

“ I have been for a long period among the Rocky Mountains, but have never seen anything like this country. It is so wild that I cannot find words to describe our situation at times. We had to pass where no

But venture we continue to do. There were over 125 folks and 2 dogs (Rusty & Chinook) who came out to celebrate the 30th annual BC Rivers Day. More than half took the river route.

People came from as far away as South Africa, Scotland, Switzerland, Chetwynd, Fort St. John, Fort Nelson, Vernon and even Hudson’s Hope.

The roasted corn was excellent...we’ll work on the coffee!

Congratulations to all the prize winners, especially newborn River Summer who won his first prize on this day!

Hudson’s Hope Ski Association News

Welcome to our newest members, Hamza Nasir and Kyle Hubbard. We appreciate input from our younger members & their enthusiasm and willingness to help. It is for our teens and local children that we strive to make this hill a part of community life.

We had a small turnout for our Fall Clean Up, but a lot was accomplished and the hotdogs

tasted great toasted over the wood heater in a nice warm & clean chalet. Thanks to Stan

Burkitt for providing the firewood. A few snowflakes fell to encourage us. Thank you to all

those who did attend, especially to Ed Forrester for his contribution of backhoe work. And

thank you to Bob Fequet for the welding he has been doing. Our Vice President Ian Tegart has spent many hours at the hill doing the numerous things that need to be done to set up the tow. He is positively optimistic that we will be up and running this season. Thanks Ian!

I will keep you posted re our progress and look forward to seeing you on the hill!

Hudson’s Hope Protective Services It’s that time again....October 3rd to 9th is FIRE PREVENTION WEEK!!!! This year’s theme is “Smoke Alarms – A Sound you can live with!” This theme is very important as most deaths due to fire occur in homes that are not equipped with smoke alarms or whose smoke alarms don’t work.

Here are some points that you should know about smoke alarms: They don’t last forever: Most smoke alarms should be replaced every 10 years. The

detection components wear out and for the cost of replacing them ($25-$50 each over 10 years = $5/year), is it really worth putting your family at risk?

They need to be tested and have the batteries (if equipped) changed regularly: Most alarms have a test button on them and the batteries should be changed twice a year.

They only work when they are plugged in or have the batteries attached: Many alarms now have a hush feature that can be used if something gets burnt in the kitchen. This will silence the alarm detector for a period of time (usually 5-10 min) so that the smoke can dissipate and you don’t have any gaps in your protection.

You should always practice your escape plan if the smoke alarm goes off: The more you practice your families escape plan, the more you will follow it in a real emergency without having to think.

The BC Fire Code changed on March 25th of this year to make smoke alarms mandatory in all dwelling units, which includes private homes. Smoke alarms have been mandatory in all new construction since 1979; however the new regulations will govern all dwelling units after they are built. Smoke alarms shall be installed between sleeping areas and the rest of the unit and in hallways that serve sleeping areas.

RCMP

On August 6 police were called to assist with respect to female that had fled the Dawson Creek Psychiatric Ward. A warrant under the Mental Health Act was obtained and the woman who had barricaded herself was talked out by police without incident and she was returned to the Dawson Creek hospital. On August 13 police stopped a vehicle for driving erratically. The driver was issued a 24 hour prohibition from driving as a result of the consumption of alcohol. On August 17 police stopped a vehicle after record checks showed the driver was to be served a 3 month driving prohibition. The driver was served the prohibition. On August 19 police stopped a vehicle and entered into an impaired driving investigation. The driver was detained and brought back to the detachment and provided breath samples of more than double the legal limit. A 24 year old Hudson’s Hope resident is scheduled to appear in court in November. On August 20 police received a report of damage to a vehicle on Dudley Dr. Someone had walked over the vehicle damaging it. Another vehicle was also damaged on Ellis Cr. Anyone with information is asked to contact police or Crime Stoppers. On August 21 police received a report of an intoxicated female on Beryl Prairie Rd. The female was located and returned to her residence without charge. On August 23 a vehicle was stolen from Jones Cr. The vehicle was seen that evening driving erratically in the Atkinson Sub Div. Police attended but the vehicle was gone prior to police arrival. The vehicle was later located behind the Sportsman in with some body damage. Fort St John Identification Section was called to gather evidence from the vehicle. Anyone with infor-mation is asked to contact police or Crime Stoppers. On August 28 police, fire/rescue, and ambulance responded to a motor bike accident by the Ski hill. A Fort St John resident was transported to Fort St John hospital by BC Ambulance for his injuries. On August 30 police received a report of a vehicle over the embankment near the gravel pit. A pick up truck had been pushed over the edge and abandoned on the riverbank. The matter is still under investigation. On September 1 police responded to a report of motor vehicle collision on Fredette Ave. The driver was detained and brought back to the detachment where he provided breath samples of


twice the legal limit. The 18 year old Fort Nelson resident is scheduled to appear in court in December. On September 3 police attended to a single vehicle motor vehicle accident near Hudson’s Hope. The driver had lost control when the vehicle began to hydroplane on the wet roads. No injuries were sustained. Police remind everyone to use caution when traveling on wet roads and to ensure their tires have sufficient tread. On September 6 police attended the Sportsman Inn regarding a complaint of an intoxicated male causing a disturbance. The male left prior to police attendance. The male was later lo-cated and taken home by police. On September 10 police responded to report of people with a campfire in the Atkinson Sub Div. A group of party-goers were broken up and sent on their way after they extinguished their fire and cleaned up their mess. On September 11 police received a report of two laptops being stolen from the Clearview Mo-tel. Police attended and the laptops were later located hidden outside of the room. On September 13 police received a report of a missing female that had failed to make it to work. The female was later located at a friend’s house. She had decided not to go into work and to not tell anyone. On September 18 a female called to report that her husband had left to go fishing on Williston Lake early in the morning and had not yet returned home. Police made patrols and located the male at the Dunlevy Campground stuck on the boat launch. The male was transported back to town. On September 18 police responded to a bear complaint near Beattie Park. Police made at-tempts to scare the bear off, but after it showed no fear of people it was destroyed. Police have responded to several other complaints over the last month and would like to remind eve-ryone to please ensure garbage containers are sealed, preferably with locking lids. Residents can also help keep bears out of town by picking up apples that have fallen off of trees in their yards.

On September 23 police attended a report of an assault at the Clearview Motel. Two males had an argument over money and a fight ensued. Neither male was willing to bring charges against the other.

On September 25 police came across 4 people walking down the road with open liquor. The liquor was destroyed and the group was given a warning with respect to the open liquor in public fine of $230.
