Visitor Centre Open 8:30am - 5:00pm Daily
Lots of visitors came through in August and such a
variety of locations they were visiting from. We have had several long distance bicycle riders. Two couples that came in weeks apart were both mak-ing their destination the southern tip of South
America. One couple started in Alaska and the oth-er in Inuvik which means the ones from Inuvik had 700 km of gravel on the beginning of their BICYCLE
journey. And they looked happy and healthy! They rested up in Hudson’s Hope for a couple of days and used King Gething for camping and the pool for recreation. We also had three young men in from Israel. They were looking for an outdoor backwoods adven-ture and found it at Carbon Lake and spent three days out there and loved the quiet.
One of the events that took place in August was a regional charity motorcycle ride. We had four registered riders from Hudson’s Hope. Bonnie Gouldie had the winning poker hand and half of that went to a charity of our choice. We were happy to present the
Friends of Hudson’s Hope with a cheque for sixty dollars.
The visitor centre closes on the last day of Se- ptember. If you need any maps, we still have a few left. The museum across the street has the BC Backroads Mapbook for Northern BC, Canadian Rockies and the Fishing Book as well. Hudson’s Hope Visitor Centre

District of Hudson’s Hope Council News
Someone told me once that it took 3” of rain before moisture really penetrated the soil
and affected the water table. If that’s true, the soil and water table must truly be affect-
ed! The rainfall on August 27th alone measured about 3” without counting the rain we had
before and after. I still don’t have puddles though, so maybe that’s next.
Public Works Shop:
After much time, work and effort by many, the District will proceed with the new Public
Works Shop this year. Integrity Post Structures will do the construction and they assure
us that we will be in before Christmas. Constructed in the 1960’s, the present shop has
served long and well. We hope and expect the new one will last 50 years as well.
Gas Field Activity:
As we all know, gas field activity has slowed substantially but Progress Energy still has a
few things on the go. They are drilling a well in the Graham field, using water from the
Farrell Creek area. It will be trucked, and because the bridges on the back road are not
rated to take the heavy loads, truckers will come down the Farrell Creek Road, up Hwy
#29 to the Alaska Highway and back in on the Mile 95 Road. There will be 83 trucks per
day, travelling in convoys of five, starting August 28. The first 17 days will be the heavi-
est, after which the hauling will continue at a reduced volume for another 2-3 weeks.
Something to keep in mind when travelling back and forth to Fort St John…..
Although they have no activity near Hudson’s Hope at the present time, Progress has con-
tinued to sponsor the Healthy Snacks program at the school, and contributed to the
climbing wall which the school will soon unveil. Thank you, Progress; we appreciate it.
Weeds:
This has been a tremendous growing year and the weeds have certainly taken advantage
of it. Scentless chamomile, foxtail and Canada thistle just exploded. In Hudson’s Hope we
work with the Regional District and industries to try to keep weeds at least under control,
if not eliminated. We have now purchased equipment and have a certified employee to
manage weeds on municipal property. We appreciate the efforts of many residents to
make their properties weed-free. Progress Energy says they have completed their weed
control program in the Farrell and Altares areas, using both hand-picking and spraying.
The Ministry of Highways has mowed vegetation on the highway rights-of-way and
scraped the ditch approaches, which did set back the chamomile and foxtail.
Earthquakes, Dams & Water:
Recently there has been some media coverage of the earthquakes induced by natural gas
extraction processes in this area and the possible risk to dams. I would add to that the
possible impact on groundwater.
If you google it, you’ll find lots of sites. Here are some:

GW Solutions has completed a major water study for the Peace River Regional District.
Dr. Gilles Wendling will present a summary of his regional findings later this fall in Fort
St. John, Dawson Creek and Chetwynd. In addition, he has said he will do a presentation
here that will focus on Hudson’s Hope.
I’ve contacted the office of the BC Comptroller of Water Rights. Glen Davidson, the
Comptroller, and Pieter Bekker, Assistant Comptroller, have agreed to come to Hudson’s
Hope in mid-October to explain the role of the comptroller’s office in water issues.

Do I Need a Building Permit?
If you are planning to construct, alter, recon-struct, demolish, remove or relocate a build-ing or structure, including excavating or oth-er work related to construction, then chances
are you need a building permit.
Typical Projects That Require a Building Permit:
new homes
new fireplaces
plumbing and/or drains
completion of roughed-in fireplaces
attached or detached garages
one or two storey additions
structural alterations to windows or doors
adding or removing walls
basement or main floor walkouts
second dwelling units
Why Do I Need a Building Permit?
Building permits are necessary to ensure that building code requirements, zoning require-
ments, fire and structural safety standards, and other building standards are met, pri-marily for health, safety, and energy conser-vation reasons. Failure to aqcuire proper
permits could lead to problems if you were to sell your home, potentially making it diffi-cult for future buyers to obtain a mortgage.
How Do I Apply for a Building Permit?
To apply for a building permit, or for more information on building permit require-
ments/processes, please email [email protected], call 250-783-9901 or come in and see us at the District Office in Hudson’s Hope.
District Bylaw 741 states that no person shall commence or continue any construc-tion, alteration, reconstruction, demolition, removal or relocation of any building or structure, including excavation or other work related to construction unless a build-
ing official has issued a valid and subsisting permit for the work. For more information
visit our website: hudsonshope.ca
Be Seen. Wear bright clothes and/or reflective gear especially at night and in poor weather.
Crossing Basics. Stop at the curb. Look left and right for oncoming vehicles that might be turning. When the inter-section is clear, start crossing and keep looking for approaching vehicles.
Look. Make sure all vehicles have stopped before entering the road. Make eye contact before crossing.
Sidewalk/no sidewalk. Walk on the inside edge of the sidewalk away from the road, so you’re further away from the traffic. Walk facing oncoming traffic if there isn’t a sidewalk, so you can see approaching vehicles and make eye contact with drivers.
Set a good example. Never jaywalk or run to cross the street. Where possible, cross at intersections with a pedestrian crossing light or marked crosswalk
Parked vehicles. Avoid shortcuts through parking lots or around parked cars where it’s harder for drivers to see small children.
Quiz time. Make a fun, interactive game out of guessing the correct traffic signs and meanings with your child.
Map it out. Plan your child’s route with them ahead of time. Review street names and landmarks to orient them.

Teen Swim Event
What fun it was at the pool for the Teen Swim Event. It was awesome to watch the kids playing pool volleyball, hoola hooping, and busting a few
dance moves. Twenty-seven teens showed up to splash around under the glow of the lights. And despite the chill, a few floats and milkshakes were devoured. Congratulations to all the prize winners and to all the contest
winners. A huge thank you to the Hudson’s Hope Pool Staff for being so watchful and so accommodating.
