Hymn: TiS 397

1. Come, Spirit blest, Creator, come from your bright heavenly throne, come, take possession of our souls and make them all your own.

2. For you are called the Paraclete, best gift of God above, the living spring, the living fire, sweet ointment and true love.

3. And you are sev’n-fold in your grace, finger of God’s right hand, his promise rightly teaching us to speak and understand.

4. Guide our dark minds with your blest light, with love our hearts inflame, and with your strength which never fails, confirm our mortal frame.

5. Far from us drive our deadly foe; true peace unto us bring; and through all perils lead us safe beneath your sacred wing.

6. Through you may we the Father know, through you th’eternal Son, and you the Spirit of them both, thrice-blessèd Three in One.

7. All glory to the Father be, with his co-equal Son: glory to you, great Paraclete, while endless ages run.

Sentence: ‘A new heart I will give you, and a new spirit I will put within you,’ says the Lord God; ‘I will put my spirit within you and you shall live.’ Ezekiel 36.26; 37.14

Prayer of Preparation: As we gather as God's people let us pray together:

Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden:cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you,and worthily magnify your holy name, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Summary of the Commandments: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ Jesus said: ‘This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as yourself.’

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD Readings from 'New Revised Standard Version' (NRSV)

First Reading: EZEKIEL 37.1-141The hand of the Lord came upon me, and he brought me out by the spirit of the Lord and set me down in the middle of a valley; it was full of bones. 2He led me all round them; there were very many lying in the valley, and they were very dry. 3He said to me, ‘Mortal, can these bones live?’ I answered, ‘O Lord God, you know.’ 4Then he said to me, ‘Prophesy to these bones, and say to them: O dry bones, hear the word of the Lord. 5Thus says the Lord God to these bones: I will cause breath to enter you, and you shall live. 6I will lay sinews on you, and will cause flesh to come upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and you shall live; and you shall know that I am the Lord .’ 7So I prophesied as I had been commanded; and as I prophesied, suddenly there was a noise, a rattling, and the bones came together, bone to its bone. 8I looked, and there were sinews on them, and flesh had come upon them, and skin had covered them; but there was no breath in them. 9Then he said to me, ‘Prophesy to the breath, prophesy, mortal, and say to the breath: Thus says the Lord God: Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe upon these slain, that they may live.’ 10I prophesied as he commanded me, and the breath came into them, and they lived, and stood on their feet, a vast multitude. 11Then he said to me, ‘Mortal, these bones are the whole house of Israel. They say, “Our bones are dried up, and our hope is lost; we are cut off completely.” 12Therefore prophesy, and say to them, Thus says the Lord God : I am going to open your graves, and bring you up from your graves, O my people; and I will bring you back to the land of Israel. 13And you shall know that I am the Lord, when I open your graves, and bring you up from your graves, O my people. 14I will put my spirit within you, and you shall live, and I will place you on your own soil; then you shall know that I, the Lord, have spoken and will act, says the Lord.’

Response: Hear the word of the Lord,

THANKS BE TO GODPsalm: 104.26-3326 Lord, how various are your works:in wisdom you have made them all, and the earth is full of your creatures.27 There is the wide, immeasurable sea:there move living things without number, great and small;28 There go the ships, to and fro:and there is that Leviathan whom you formed to sport in the deep.29 These all look to you:to give them their food in due season.30 When you give it to them, they gather it:when you open your hand they are satisfied with good things.31 When you hide your face, they are troubled:when you take away their breath, they die and return to their dust.32 When you send forth your spirit they are created:and you renew the face of the earth.33 May the glory of the Lord endure for ever:may the Lord rejoice in his works.

Second Reading: ACTS 2.1-121When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. 2And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. 4All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. 5Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. 6And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. 7Amazed and astonished, they asked, ‘Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? 8And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? 9Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, 11Cretans and Arabs—in our own languages we hear them speaking about God’s deeds of power.’ 12All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, ‘What does this mean?’

Gradual Hymn: TiS 409

1. O breath of life, come sweeping through us, revive your church with life and power; O breath of life, come cleanse, renew us, and fit your church to meet this hour.

2. O wind of God, come bend us, break us, till humbly we confess our need; then in your tenderness remake us, revive, restore: for this we plead.

3. O breath of love, come breathe within us, renewing thought and will and heart;

come, love of Christ, afresh to win us,

revive your church in every part.

4. Revive us, Lord! Is zeal abating while harvest fields are vast and white? Revive us, Lord, the world is waiting, equip your church to spread the light.

We stand for the reading of the Holy Gospel as a sign of respect as we greet our Lord who is present in His Holy Word.

The Lord be with you AND ALSO WITH YOU

The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Saint John chapter 15 beginning at the 26th verse.

GLORY TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST.

26‘When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who comes from the Father, he will testify on my behalf. 27You also are to testify because you have been with me from the beginning. 4But I have said these things to you so that when their hour comes you may remember that I told you about them. ‘I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you. 5But now I am going to him who sent me; yet none of you asks me, “Where are you going?” 6But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your hearts. 7Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. 8And when he comes, he will prove the world wrong about sin and righteousness and judgement: 9about sin, because they do not believe in me; 10about righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will see me no longer; 11about judgement, because the ruler of this world has been condemned. 12‘I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 14He will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and declare it to you. 15All that the Father has is mine. For this reason I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you. Gospel Response: This is the gospel of the Lord,

PRAISE TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST.

SERMON - (copy of sermon available at back of church)

The Choir sings “Veni, Creator Spiritus”, Gounod.

The Nicene CreedLet us together affirm the faith of the Church.

We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty,

maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead,

13

Page 14: HTK Pew Sheet, 10am, May 27, 2012

and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Final Hymn: TiS 158

1. God has spoken by his prophets, spoken his unchanging word, each, from age to age proclaiming God, the one, the righteous Lord. In the world’s despair and turmoil one firm anchor holds us fast: God is king, his throne eternal, God the first, and God the last.

2. God has spoken by Christ Jesus, Christ, the everlasting Son, brightness of the Father’s glory, with the Father ever one; spoken by the Word incarnate, God from God, ere time began, Light from Light, to earth descending, God, revealed as Son of Man.

3. God is speaking by his Spirit, speaking to our hearts again, in the age-long word expounding God’s own message, now as then, through the rise and fall of nations one sure faith yet standing fast; God still speaks, his word unchanging, God the first, and God the last.
