(91.4 x 125.7 x 55.9 cm)�Rogers Fund, 1953 (53.181a,b)�The gilded caryatids on this example make it the most overtly Grecian of Lannuier's square pier tables. Based on the carved marble figures of the Erechtheum on the Acropolis in Athens, the caryatids were cast in lead and treated with a gilded surface. They may have been made in a mold taken from a French bronze lighting device of a type similar in quality to the imported bronze clocks that Lannuier is known to have sold in his store. The gilded surface of the paw feet, brass ornaments along the apron, and rosettes along the base complement the figures in a pleasing manner.

Milligan House, BNA= 1853Milligan House�The Milligan House was built in Saratoga Springs, New York, by Colonel Robert J. Milligan in 1853. The lavish drawing room in the Rococo Revival style (inspired by 18th-century French design) was the front parlor of the house. The library, originally the back parlor, was modified and furnished in the Gothic Revival style for its installation in the Museum in order to demonstrate the interest in a broad range of historical styles in the 19th century. Certain styles became associated with particular room usage: Rococo for parlors and Gothic for libraries. In the drawing room, the characteristic flamboyant scroll and floral motifs of the Rococo Revival style are found in the carpet pattern, the chair carving, the mantel, and the over-mantel looking glass. The more sober forms of Gothic design were considered preferable for the mood of a library. The two rooms together illustrate the kind of interiors that resulted from the explosion of goods available to the rising middle class in the 19th century.
