The Roots of Xenophobia Die Angst vor dem Fremden Die Wurzeln der Xenophobie by Erhard Oeser © Autumn 2015 Imprint: WBG 480 pages, 80 b/w images ISBN 978-3-8062-3151-9 Why do so many people fear and reject strangers?
Xenophobia has accompanied man from his very
beginnings. While it can be constitutive for
groups, societies and states, its aggressive form
has led time and again to the most terrible
excesses.
Erhard Oeser examines xenophobia from the early
beginnings of mankind up to Islamic State and the
attacks in Paris in January 2015. He analyzes the
various shapes of xenophobia and traces the
turning points when rejection of strangers reverts
to violence and the desire of annihilation.
He searches for mechanisms that make a return to
a peaceful co-existence possible. It is of great
importance to talk to each other again instead of
about or against each other. In view of today’s
many escalating confrontations this important
work calls for a return to constructive dialogue
and debate - instead of leaving the stage to
populists and radicals.
Erhard Oeser is an Austrian philosopher of science.

Louis XIV The Commander-in-Chief from Versailles Ludwig XIV. Der Kriegsherr aus Versailles by Martin Wrede © Autumn 2015 Imprint: Zabern 300 pages, 10 b/w images ISBN 978-3-8062-3160-7 Louis XIV, le Roi de Soleil, shaped his epoch more
than anyone else. He is the embodiment of the
early modern, absolutist monarch. Under his
reign, between 1643 and 1715, France became
Europe’s supreme cultural power. Every European
sovereign tried to emulate the display of splendor
and the European aristocracy conversed in French.
However, Louis XIV lost the political hegemony
over Europe. He expanded the French frontiers in
several wars while at the same time creating a
European alliance that showed him his limits.
Louis’ contemporaries never doubted his
magnificence. His real political achievement is
more difficult to assess, however. Neither was he
a proper commander-in-chief nor a legislator. Yet,
he embodied the power and authority of the
state. Without him, European history would have
taken a different course entirely.
Martin Wrede tries to take stock of his reign and
influence on the shape of France.
Martin Wrede is professor for Early Modern History at the University of Grenoble.

Legendary Shipwrecks From Noah’s Ark to the Titanic Legendäre Schiffswracks. Von der Arche Noah bis zur Titanic by Eigel Wiese © March 2015 Imprint: Theiss 192 pages, 19 color images, 25 b/w images ISBN 978-3-8062-2843-4 Ships symbolize the departure for new worlds,
courage and discoveries. Shipwrecks, on the other
hand, are associated with lost lives and failed
hopes, but also with adventure, treasure and
riches. While the sea has drawn ships to its
bottom, sea water has conserved many wrecks.
This is why the remains of ships can actually tell us
a lot about the life of former times, trade and
craftsmanship.
Eigel Wiese traces the history behind the
shipwrecks. He depicts the trade routes of
Phoenician traders, the conservation of the
Hanseatic cog of Bremerhaven, the discovery of
the legendary “Queen Anne’s Revenge”, the ship
of the pirate Captain Blackbeard, and many other
stories about sunken ships and what they can tell
us about the past.
Eigel Wiese, born in 1947, is a professional photographer and journalist and lives in Hamburg. He is a descendant of an old Northern German family of seafarers. Since 1992 he has his own editorial office for maritime subjects.

The Belief in Progress European historical thinking - utopia and ideology Der Fortschrittsglaube. Europäisches Geschichtsdenken zwischen Utopie und Ideologie
by Bedrich Loewenstein © April 2015 Imprint: WBG 512 pages ISBN 978-3-534-26666-1 Progress, the development towards a superior
stage, seems to be a historical fact in the present
perspective of the western world. This is,
however, only an assumption, a historic-
philosophical axiom. In essence, this idea
originated with the European enlightenment, and
only in stepping backwards while reflecting on this
is it possible to realize that quite different
interpretations of historic processes can be
imagined and that those were or are fundamental
in other cultures and epochs.
Bedrich Loewenstein follows the idea of the belief
in progress, its implications and consequences in a
great historical essay, a magnum opus, that
summarizes his lifelong work on this thought while
at the same time reflects on the experiences of
this great European between diverse ideologies
and utopias.
Bedrich Loewenstein, born in 1929 in Prague, is one of the most significant historians of ideas and social theoreticians of the 20th century. As a son of a German-Jewish family and a non-Marxist his education was disrupted both under Nazi and communist rule before he became a renowned historian. Apart from his academic achievements he was awarded for his outstanding influence on the German-Czech partnership.

The Pleasures of Eating Out A Cultural History Der Mensch isst nicht gerne allein Eine kleine Kulturgeschichte by Thomas Wieke © February 2014 Imprint: Lambert Schneider 128 pages, 27 colour and 3 b/w illustrations ISBN 978-3-650-40005-5 People do not eat at home at all times - for
various reasons they also eat outside of their
homes. They are traveling or on vacation, they are
at school or at work. Eating out is about more
than the need for nourishment. Dining is also a
communal event.
This cultural history offers numerous evidence for
this. This historical “dine around” describes
ancient feasts, medieval taverns and monastic
refectories, palace kitchens and banquets of the
Early Modern Era to today’s cafeterias, canteens
and dining cars.
Thomas Wieke is a journalist and author and lives in Berlin. He has been a columnist for the food magazine “Snaxx” and enjoys writing about food and drink from unusual perspectives.

Early in the morning long queues start to form in

the political stage have also gotten up early today
as they want to form a new government. Paul von
Hindenburg chooses Adolf Hitler - and surrenders
Germany on this very day to its greatest
destroyer.

out of his way to absolute power. He destroys the
structures of the constitutional state,
disempowers, persecutes and kills his opponents.
He leads Germany into a war which the world is
still reeling from today.
World history to this day is shaped by what
started on this 30th of January in 1933. Historian
and cultural journalist Monika Dreykorn shows in
a gripping way the background and consequences
of this fateful day.
Monika Dreykorn works as a journalist and historian for publishing houses, institutions and museums.

history and synonymous with the ultimate defeat.

Maria, Empress of Russia A Wurttemberg Princess on the Tsarist Throne Maria, Kaiserin von Russland. Die Württembergerin auf dem Zarenthron by Marianna Butenschön © April 2015 Imprint: Theiss 432 pages, 15 b/w images ISBN 978-3-8062-3047-5 When, aged 17, Sophie Dorothea of Württemberg
(1759-1828) married the only son of Catharine the
Great and was thenceforth known as “Maria
Fjodorovna” she could not know that hers was to
be a life full of fateful events: Five of her ten
children died before her. Emperor Paul I, her
husband, was murdered in 1801 and she never got
over his death. Her son Alexander waged war
against Napoleon for many years, her son Nikolaus
started his reign by the brutal submission of a
rebellion and her daughters whom she had
married off to various European dukes, mostly did
not lead happy lives abroad.
Marianna Butenschön narrates how Princess
“Dortel” of Württemberg became one of the most
significant rulers of the House of Romanov. The
personal fate of Maria is woven into the story of
the dramatic political events of the time.
Marianna Butenschön is a historian and author of several publications on Russia and the Baltic states.

Myth Alarm! 20 popular errors about knights Alles Mythos! 20 populäre Irrtümer über die Ritter by Karin Schneider Ferber © March 2015 Imprint: Theiss 224 pages ISBN 978-3-8062-2785-7 We meet the knights of the Middle Ages - heroic,
courageous, noble and just - in literature, film and
computer games and on medieval festivals on an
almost permanent basis. But how true is that
heroic picture that we encounter already in the
high medieval epics? Does it correlate to the
reality of medieval life? Did the knights venture
into battle only for glory and honour or did they
also take money for their services? Did the
notorious “Black Prince” really exist and how was
the knight assigned his favourite opponent, the
dragon?
This book takes up 20 popular errors about the
knightship and does away with the idealized
picture of so many centuries. Knights were only
human with very mundane weaknesses…
Karin Schneider-Ferber studied medieval history, Bavarian history and art history at the University of Augsburg. She works as a journalist and author.

Crescent and Swastika The Third Reich, the Arabs and Palestine Halbmond und Hakenkreuz. Das Dritte Reich, die Araber und Palästina by Klaus-Michael Mallmann and Martin Cüppers © special edition 2011 Imprint: WBG 288 pages, 13 b/w images, 1 map ISBN 978-3-89678-728-6 With the landing of the German Afrikakorps in
Libya in February 1941 began the phase of active
German intervention in the Arab territories. There
were far-reaching strategic plans to conquer the
Near and Middle East. Mass murder of Jews in
Palestine was on the agenda as well – to be
executed with active help of local Arab
collaborators. This plan appeared to be easy to
carry through – the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, a
relative of Arafat, had met with Hitler in Berlin
after all. A German force was awaiting its
marching orders – which, however, were never
issued because of Rommel’s lost battle of El
Alamein.
Klaus-Michael Mallmann and Martin Cüppers have
written the first comprehensive history of the
relationship between national socialist Germany
and the Arab Near East, a relationship that –
between racist ideology, politics and religion –
was a most explosive issue and is casting its
shadow to this day.
Klaus-Michael Mallmann is professor for modern history at the University of Stuttgart and director of the Research Center Ludwigsburg which is dedicated to the investigation of crimes committed in the Nazi era. Martin Cüppers is a research associate at the Research Center Ludwigsburg which is dedicated to the investigation of crimes committed in the Nazi era.

German Foreign Policy in the Era of Bismarck 1862 - 1890 Deutsche Außenpolitik in der Ära Bismarck 1862-1890 by Andreas Rose © July 2013 Imprint: WBG 143 pages, 2 maps, 2 images ISBN 978-3-534-15188-2 Andreas Rose presents a clear analysis of the most
important events, influences and protagonists of
the years 1862 to 1890. The European wars, the
rivalries and resentments of the great powers, the
complex alliances between them and the secret
diplomacy which shaped the Era of Bismarck – the
author offers a comprehensive view over the
entire European continent.
At the beginning of Bismarck`s era, the heart of
Europe consisted merely of a loose confederation
of states dominated by Prussia; at Bismarck’s
dismissal the German Empire was the dominant
great power on the continent. Three so-called
unity wars were the prerequisite for this
development (1864, 1866, 1870/71).
At the same time, armed conflicts led to the
formation of the Greek and Italian states -
Bismarck’s era is thus characterized by the
formation of nation states.
The struggle for a new European order during
which statesmen increasingly had to consider
public opinion is presented by Andreas Rose in a
precise and chronological analysis.
Andreas Rose teaches modern and contemporary history at the University of Bonn.

German Foreign Policy in the Wilhelmian Empire 1890 – 1918 Die Außenpolitik des Wilhelminischen Kaiserreiches 1890-1918
by Andreas Rose © November 2013 Imprint: WBG 160 pages, 1 map, 7 charts ISBN 978-3-534-25935-9 After the dismissal of Bismarck his ingenious
system of alliances was altered fundamentally:
The declared ambition was to transform Germany
into a world power and the navy was to be the
instrument to attain this end. Andreas Rose
presents the German foreign policy from 1890 to
the demise of the Empire in 1918 in both
systematic-structural as well as chronological
chapters.
The foreign policy of the German Empire is
doubtless one of the central and most divisive
fields of modern history. The European rivalries,
the imperial struggle for colonies overseas and the
increasing relevance of public opinion threw the
continent into grave danger which led to the First
World War.
Andreas Rose teaches modern and contemporary history at the University of Bonn.

Knights at Sea Naval power and seafaring at the time of the Crusades Ritter auf dem Meer. Seemacht und Seewesen zur Zeit der Kreuzzüge by Georg-Michael Fleischer © September 2011 Imprint: Zabern 248 pages, 36 b/w images ISBN 978-3-8053-4370-1 The Crusades were one of the big medieval
projects of Western Europe which made a high
logistical efficiency indispensable. Numerous
knights without any maritime experience had to
be shipped across vast distances; they had to be
fed on board and treated medically. This
modernized seafaring to an enormous extent and
paved the way for the subsequent discovery of the
world's oceans. This book presents fascinating
aspects of seafaring and shows us in interesting
detail the numerous facets of these exciting times.

Hatschepsut Hatschepsut by Peter Nadig © Autumn 2014 Imprint: Zabern 208 pages, 10 b/w images ISBN 978-3-8053-4763-1
Already sold to Poland Hardly anyone in Ancient Egypt is so much
shrouded by both mystery and fascination like
Hatschepsut. After the death of her husband and
brother she took over the regency for her
underage stepson and nephew Thutmosis III.
Soon, however, she took on the traditional title of
king as well as the official insignia of the pharaoh’s
power. In portraits she was depicted as a man.
Hatschepsut died after reigning for almost 22
years, a prosperous epoch, which belongs to the
most glorious times of Egyptian history. Who was
this mysterious pharaoh and why was all memory
extinguished after the pharao’s death?
Peter Nadig has written a fascinating biography,
based on original sources.

Ancient Egypt Das Alte Ägypten by Martin Bommas © November 2011 Imprint: WBG 152 pages, 1 b/w illustration, 1 map ISBN 978-3-534-23552-0 This work offers a vivid introduction into the
history of Egypt based on the latest research. It
depicts the history and development of Ancient
Egypt from 3300 BC up to the conquest by
Alexander the Great and thus to the end of the
pharaohs' reign. Following the lists of kings, the
author shows the chronology of the history but
does not lose sight of individuals that guided the
empire's fortunes.
Emphasis is also placed on the cultural
development of Ancient Egypt (language, script,
art, literature) considering that the history of
Egypt is first and foremost a cultural history that
continued even in between the great epochs of
the Old, Middle and New Empire. By focusing on
the culture of everyday life, this book opens up
hitherto neglected non-official perspectives.
Martin Bommas studied Egyptology in Heidelberg and has lectured at the universities of Heidelberg, Basel and Zurich and as a guest lecturer in Rome and Sheffield. Since 2006 he has been a senior lecturer at the University of Birmingham.

The Enigma - The Queen of Sheba History and Myth Das Rätsel der Königin von Saba Geschichte und Mythos by Ulfried Kleinert © December 2014 Imprint: Zabern 207 pages, 16 colour and 19 b/w illustrations, 1 map ISBN 978-3-8053-4713-6 The Queen of Sheba is one of the great mythic figures – and yet remains oddly anonymous. If indeed she was an historical figure, her kingdom would have lain in the lands of the Sabaeans, in the southern half of the Arabian Peninsula. She is first mentioned in the Old Testament, as a woman of exceeding wisdom and immeasurable wealth, who travels to Jerusalem to meet King Solomon. Re-emerging in the New Testament, she is also mentioned in the Qur’an as well as in Ethiopic sources. According to the latter tradition, a son she had by King Solomon became the ancestor of the Ethiopian royal line. Ulfrid Kleinert follows the traces of this most mythical of queens, covering also her afterlife in European and Ethiopian literature and art. Ulfried Kleinert is professor at the Protestant University of Dresden. His research focus is on exegetics and ancient oriental religious history. He has been traveling to Yemen, Ethiopia and the Sinai for many years.

The Etruscans Die Etrusker by Friederike Bubenheimer-Erhard © November 2014 Imprint: WBG 191 pages, 134 coloured illustrations, 5 maps ISBN 978-3-8053-4805-8 The Etruscans are one of the most fascinating and
mysterious peoples of the Antiquity. They lived on
the Appenine peninsula long before the Romans
and had intensive trade contacts to the most
varied peoples, the Greeks among others.
Interestingly enough, most Greek vases were not
found in Greece but in Italy.
Friederike Bubenheimer-Erhart, a specialist on the
Etruscans, presents their history and culture
chronologically and with numerous fascinating
images. The book is interspersed with special
pages on society, settlements and cities, temples
and sacred sites, language, script, crafts, religion
etc. Famous personalities like the sculptor Vulca,
the admiral Velthur Spurinna or the art patron
Maecenas are portrayed also.

modern viewpoint these are the ingredients for a
proper Roman orgy. “Orgia”, however, originally
stood for certain rituals in ancient mystery cults
only.
As it is, the latter is not the topic of this book.
Cornelius Hartz tells us who was partying how,
when and why in ancient Rome - religious
celebrations, triumphal processions, family
celebrations, opulent banquets, Rome’s red-light
district and the decadent debaucheries of Roman
emperors.
The author takes us along on an entertaining

examples from literature, he explores the roots of
those extravagant parties and their religious
origins.

Cicero Cicero by Klaus Bringmann © September 2014, 2nd edition Imprint: Zabern 336 pages, 10 b/w illustrations, 2 maps ISBN 978-3-8053-4829-4 Marcus Tullius Cicero is one of the most
fascinating personalities of the late Roman
republic. Even though a member of the
knighthood, he succeeded to rise in senatorial
circles crowning his achievement with the position
of consul. A typical “homo novus”, he - like no-one
else - impersonated the ideals of the old Roman
virtues - and precisely for this reason found
himself drawn into the maelstrom of the
foundering Roman republic.
Cicero saw the Roman state threatened by social
revolutionaries like Catilina - this automatically
making him an opponent of Caesar. When the
latter was murdered, he rejoiced - and realized
too late that he was again on the wrong side: In
the civil war waged against the murderers he
became one of the first victims of the
proscriptionists.
Cicero’s tragic involvement in the conflicts of his
time constitutes the center of this new biography
of Klaus Bringmann. The author also discusses
Cicero’s extensive literary oeuvre that show his
political ideas as well as his private thoughts.
Klaus Bringmann is professor emeritus for History of the Antiquity at the University of Frankfurt. His focus in research revolves around Roman history from the republic to late antiquity, the history of Hellenism, Jewish history in Hellenic and Roman times as well as the history of Christendom in the Roman Empire.

oftentimes elaborate and lavish constructions and
contained information on life and fate, career and
profession of the deceased.
This book presents tomb engravings of the most
diverse people – of bakers and charioteers, slaves
and emperors – illustrated with photos and
original text, translation and commentary. These
tombs are to be found at prominent sites and in

Luxury in Ancient Rome O debauchery - sweet poison... Luxus im alten Rom. Die Schwelgerei, das süße Gift… by Karl Wilhelm Weeber © March 2015 Imprint: Zabern 208 pages, 110 color images ISBN 978-3-8053-4868-3 Karl-Wilhelm Weeber shows us the luxurious sides
of imperial Rome: feasts, pompous mansions,
luxurious tombs - those belonging to the upper
class could wallow in luxury from the cradle to the
grave.
According to Cicero the Roman people hated the
private display of luxury but enjoyed pomposity in
the public space. Since Augustus, at the very
latest, this partiality was used by those in power
for the preservation of power and to document
their successful rule. Grandiosity in the public
space underlined the greatness and majesty of the
Imperium Romanum and made the ordinary man
feel proud of the achievements of the Roman
civilization.

The Vandal Kingdom Das Königreich der Vandalen by Konrad Vössing © February 2014 Imprint: Zabern 208 pages, 13 b/w illustrations ISBN 978-3-8053-4761-7 A small band of Germanic ‘barbarians’ trek across
Europe, reaching North Africa, and proceed by
capturing Rome, aiding in the fall of the West
Roman Empire.
These were the Vandals. Their kingdom lasted for
only a hundred years, before they mysteriously
dropped from history, leaving no trace. No other
Germanic tribe stayed independent as long as
they did.
The history of this mysterious kingdom is bound
up in an intricate and unique way with that of its
first, and most important, king, Genseric. It was he
who led them to present-day Tunisia, then part of
Roman North Africa. It was he, also, who led the
Vandals to military victory, and established a well-
organised Vandal state.
Konrad Vössing’s vivid and clear description
conjures up a mighty kingdom at the African
fringes of the late Roman Empire, giving readers
an eminently insightful account of the great
‘migration of peoples,’ as well as of the
exceptional personality of Genseric.
Konrad Vössing is professor for Ancient History at the University of Bonn. His focuses his research on Roman North Africa and the Vandals.

an irresistible pull over mankind and its
imagination. For archaeologists, however, they are
much more than simply the metals out of which
they consist but valuable keys to the exploration
of old cultures. How did they get into the ground?
To whom did they belong? What do they tell us
about long bygone times?
Following these and other questions the well-
known archaeologists Stephan Faust and Frank
Hildebrandt recount the histories behind
significant treasures of gold, silver and bronze
from the Bronze Age to late antiquity. In this
gorgeously illustrated book they portray famous
but also less well-known treasures and the

Skythians to the silver find of Hildesheim.

scenery and legendary ancient civilizations are the
background of a civilization that spans several
millenia. Impressive sights like the mysterious
monolithic rock-cut churches of Lalibela and the
mystic stelae of Aksum belong to the world’s
cultural heritage.
With the discovery of “Lucy” did scientists realize
that it was here that mankind originated from.
With the beginning of the first millennium BC the
ancient civilization of the Sabaeans from Southern
Arabia expanded from here and the ancient
empire of Aksum evolved.
Early Christianity took root in Ethiopia and
became the religion of the state much earlier than
in nearly all other countries. With the emergence
of Christian monasticism in the Early Middle Ages
churches and monasteries were built in their
unique styles.
Archaeologist Klaus Dornisch has written an

ancient times. Trade and war ships brought
travelers who could tell stories of foreign lands.
For important cities of the Antiquities like Athens,
Alexandria and Rome a port was not only their
trans-shipment center for trade goods and as such
indispensable to their survival. At the same time it
was the seaward figurehead with many
engineering marvels and impressive buildings like
the light house of Alexandria, the Colossus of
Rhodes, the lockable ports in Miletus or the ship
sheds in Athens.
Christina Wawrzinek offers an overview of ports in

as the bustling everyday life in Piraeus, Ostia and
other ports.

Stone Graves of the Antiquity Antike Felsgräber by Stephan Steingräber © November 2015 Imprint: Zabern 144 pages, 115 colour illustrations ISBN 978-3-8053-4923-9
Stone graves belong to the monumental
testimonies of ancient architecture. Particularly
impressive gravesides can be found in Etruria, in
the Southwest of Asia Minor and in the Ancient
Far East. Petra in Jordan is considered to be the
queen of antique stone graves. But also in Sicily or
on the Iberian peninsula there are several
examples of this kind of tomb architecture.
In this title these significant monuments are
presented in a larger Mediterranean context for
the first time. Drawing on the newest research
and with exclusive picture material Stephan
Steingräber shows that stone grave architecture
was also aimed at scenographic and
representative effects from its very beginnings.
This becomes obvious in the deliberate
orientation of grave facades towards the dwellings
of the living.
Stephan Steingräber is an archaeologist and professor for Etruscology at the University of Roma Tre. He has published extensively on topography, nekropolises and tomb paintings in Etruria and Lower Italy.

The Roman Civil Wars History and Archaeology of a Time of Crisis Die römischen Bürgerkriege Geschichte und Archäologie einer Krisenzeit by Dominik Maschek © January 2016 Imprint: Zabern 192 pages ISBN 978-3-8053-4913-0 The late Roman Republic was shaped by grave
crises in the period between 133 and 27 BC - the
Gracchi, the battle of Actium and others up to the
rise of Augustus. There were downright eruptions
of violence: Some military leaders like Marius,
Sulla or Pompeius acquired so much power that
the interior cohesion of the republic fell asunder.
The Roman Empire sank into civil war.
At the same time there was a growth in wealth
that led to great social rearrangements in the
public as well as the private realm: conspicuous in
architecture, production and consumption.
By analyzing buildings and visual elements like
symbols as well as on the basis of rituals and acts
of states, Dominik Maschek explores this time of
crisis and offers a complete cultural-historical
interpretation of this epoch.
Dominik Maschek studied classical archaeology, ancient history and prehistory at the University of Vienna. Since 2001 he has been involved in excavations in Carnuntum and Palmyra. Currently, he is a research assistant at the University of Darmstadt.

as the history of literature and art. The oldest
depictions of humans in Homer’s Iliad and
Odyssey show textile luxury and the delight in
beautiful clothing as a natural part of life: After
Paris’ abduction of Helena, it is of great
importance to him to provide clothing for his new
bride that will befit her status and beauty.
For centuries, textiles and clothing served as a
means for social differentiation as well as for the
clear distinction between the genders. Special
focus is on the epoch from early archaic times up
to Greek classicism.
The authors combine different perspectives –
aesthetic, socio-historical, art historical and

was an important part of human life even in the

music? What happens in their brains? What social
function does music have for the community?
For the first time, the most various aspects of

examples and illustrated by means of
archaeological finds. The authors do not focus on
Europe alone but consider different societies and
continents as well as the chronological

Romans as Heliopolis, belongs to the most well-

most enigmatic. The monumental buildings raise
questions on the economic foundations, historical
conditions and living environments of their

Both the spectacular as well as the inconspicuous
remnants of these buildings as well as numerous
finds provide answers to these questions. They are
the sources for a developmental history of
Baalbek and the Northern plain of Beqaa that
started much earlier than assumed heretofore.

they also convey useful insights into the changing
society for which the spectacular Roman buildings
acquired new meanings. They illuminate ten
millennia of history of one of the most important

towards the world seem to be at opposing ends of

reflexive processes. Very diverse interests,
perceptions, attitudes and emotional expectations
need to be considered in a ritual and its execution.

into the relationship of ritual and reflection: The
authors offer fresh impulses ranging from
theology, philosophy, history and art to literary
science and Judaic studies. They discuss the
significance of ritualistic deeds and their forms of
expression, the relationship between the content
and its form of expression, the pertinence of ritual
processes as well as the function of rituals for
mankind over the course of time.

contemporary philosophy. It has been discussed
since ancient times and is being constantly re-
interpreted because of current developments in
the neurosciences.
In this work Friedhelm Decher offers a unique
conceptual history of the philosophy of the mind.
He presents a selection of the most important
philosophical theories and positions on the mind
in occidental history that range from the Antiquity
to this day. He describes approaches, viewpoints
and perceptions of mind, soul and awareness that
characterize the philosophical discussion and
shows how our conception of the mind has
developed and changed through the ages.
Friedhelm Decher is professor of philosophy at the University of Siegen.

Europe’s Fundamental Core Values Grundwerte Europas by Clemens Sedmak (ed.) © February 2010 to September 2017 Imprint: WBG 7 tomes, each with about 288 pages What constitutes Europe’s ethnic and intellectual
foundation? The question as to what really are
Europe’s values form the core of many intellectual
debates these days. Seven core values have
emerged: Solidarity, equality, liberty, human
dignity, tolerance, justice and peace. What do
these values signify? What are their specifically
European dimensions? In how far are they
connected to the history of ideas and religion?
How are these core values perceived
internationally?
A seven-tome book series is following these
questions with the aim of sketching out a “map of
European values”.

Tolerance The Value of Diversity Toleranz Vom Wert der Vielfalt by Clemens Sedmak © June 2015 Imprint: WBG 288 pages ISBN 978-3-534-20776-3 Tolerance plays an important role in the contact of
religions and their relationship towards each
other.
Tolerance means supporting something that one
does actually not approve of but which one is
ready to accept for the sake of a higher good. In
Europe this higher good constitutes the peaceful
coexistence in a pluralistic society. But should
there not be distinct positions that do not tolerate
just anything? Should there not be limits to the
freedom of expression?
The attacks on Charlie Hebdo have moved the
question of the limits of tolerance into the fore.
This work shows which challenges and chances
the advocacy of tolerance offers for Europe’s
multicultural community of states.

history of Europe from its very beginnings and are
at the center of political and social conflicts. But
does that mean that “justice” is a specifically

of justice in non-European cultures? Which
changes has the concept of justice undergone?
How much injustice can a society cope with?
This tome is a collection of interdisciplinary

A Handbook of Anthropology: From Homer to Sartre Handbuch der Anthropologie. Die wichtigsten Konzepte von Homer bis Sartre by Wolfgang H. Pleger © 2013 Imprint: WBG 320 pages ISBN 978-3-534-25789-8 In this handbook, Wolfgang Pleger offers a
historical-systematic account of the most seminal
anthropological concepts in the Western tradition.
These theories of man’s problematic situation of
being in the world span sources ranging from
classical and Biblical mythology (where man
figures as a mortal creature made by divine
agency) to materialist approaches conceiving of
man as, basically, ‘determined matter.’ From
classical antiquity to modernity, from Homer to
Sartre, each of the different notions of ‘man’
Pleger identifies is exemplified through three
seminal philosophical theories. Apart from
philosophical sources, this handbook also takes
into account examples from poetry, religion, and
the social and natural sciences, making it a truly
interdisciplinary work of reference.

SOLD TO SPAIN AND BRAZIL Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900) belongs without
doubt to the greatest inspirers of philosophy,
especially as there has been a huge response to
his work not only in the academic philosophy but
also within art and literature.
As he is the founder of different schools and
directions, i.e. existentialism or phenomenology,
and furthermore an example and inspiration for
artists and writers, today his influence has not
been valued enough.
This Nietzsche dictionary contains and explains all
421 terms mentioned in this volume and gives
advice for comprehension within the given
context.
This volume's excellence is the short and clear
information about a philosopher who belongs to
the most secretive thinkers despite his stylistic
brilliance. It offers explanations to all central
terms by known national and international
experts, gives an insight into his biography and
living circumstances and describes varied
reactions to his work. With its indexes and

Marriage, partnership and sexuality From sexual morals to the ethics of relationships
Ehe, Partnerschaft und Sexualität Von der Sexualmoral zur Beziehungsethik by Konrad Hilpert © September 2015 Imprint: WBG 176 pages ISBN 978-3-534-74012-3 With Pope Francis an intensive discussion about
cohabitation outside of church marriage has
begun anew. Should remarried or same-sex
couples be allowed to partake of the Holy
Communion? Should they be allowed to be active
in church or be employed by institutions of the
church? Is it possible for the Catholic Church to
view partnerships like these in a positive light?
These and other questions were discussed in a
synod in Rome in autumn 2014 that is going to be
continued in October 2015.
Konrad Hilpert’s book is coming out just in time

critics of the Catholic Church in Germany. He has
been consistently fighting for the Catholic
Church‘s stratified structures to be broken up and
for Catholicism to adjust to the challenges of the
present age. His commitment for the ecumenical
movement and his advocacy for Christians of
different denominations to share in the Eucharist
have rendered him well-known. However, the

stripping him of his license to teach as a Roman
Catholic theologian. He was defrocked in 2003.

Origins of the Koran New Insights of Historical-Critical Exegetics Die Entstehung des Korans Neue Erkenntnisse aus der Sicht der historisch-kritischen Bibelwissenschaft by Karl-Friedrich Pohlmann © August 2015, 3rd edition Imprint: WBG 208 pages ISBN 978-3-534-26717-0 This title examines an important part of the
relationship between Islam and other religions:
How is it possible to read the Koran in an
enlightened and reflexive way? In today's
exegetics it is standard procedure to use critical
methodology in analyzing the formative period
and authorship of Biblical texts - while foregoing
predetermined conclusions. With reference to the
Koran the resort to this approach is rare. It is thus
not surprising that the Koran is usually traced back
to Mohammed as the sole author.
As Karl-Friedrich Pohlmann shows in this extensive
overview, however, the opposite is much more
likely. He uses text-critical methods of exegetics
on longer passages of the Koran for the first time
and gains new insights into the authorship of the
Koran. He thus fills a gap that has long been
deplored by researchers worldwide.
Karl-Friedrich Pohlmann was professor for Old Testament Studies at the University of Münster. He has published extensively on the Prophetic Books of the Old Testament.

Augustinus Genius and Saint Augustinus. Genie und Heiliger by Klaus Rosen © April 2015 Imprint: Zabern 240 pages, 10 b/w images ISBN 978-3-8053-4860-7
Already sold to Italy Augustinus (354-430) is not only one of the four
Doctors of the Church of late Antiquity, but also
one of the most important philosophers of the
epoch bridging Antiquity and the Middle Ages. His
works, influenced by platonic philosophy, are to
this day controversial and at the same time highly
topical. In this biography, the focus is for the first
time less on the theological and philosophical
person of Augustinus, but on the historical facts.
Klaus Rosen illustrates vividly which events shaped
the actions and thinking of Augustinus. He shows
the influence of Antique society, its religious laws,
Augustinus' dispute with Arianism and the
consequences of the Vandal conquest of
Augustinus' bishop's see. The picture of
Augustinus is thus enlivened by numerous new
aspects.
Klaus Rosen, born in 1937, was professor for history of the antiquity at the University of Bonn.

The Geological Revolution How the Discovery of Earth’s History Changed our Way of Thinking
Die geologische Revolution Wie die Entdeckung der Erdgeschichte unser Denken veränderte by Gottfried Hofbauer © October 2015 Imprint: WBG 160 pages, 40 b/w images ISBN 978-3-534-26728-6 In the 18th and 19th century people’s worldview
changed fundamentally. Till then their concept of
time had been shaped by the biblical story of
Creation which in turn had led to the belief that
past and future were of short duration olny.
Bishop James Ussher’s calculation that the earth
was created on the eve of the 23rd of October in
the year 4004 BC was very popular indeed.
With the discovery that rocks bear testimony of
the long and eventful history of the earth and
after Darwin’s presentation of his concept about
the evolution of the different species this
perception began to dissolve. And with the loss of
trust in biblical history the expectation of the
world coming to an end soon faded as well.
Gottfried Hofbauer shows how this directed
people’s thinking into viewing the future as
interminable - a concept that is self-evident for us
today - and how scientific insights effectively
changed people’s thinking and their awareness of
and attitude towards life.
Gottfried Hofbauer has been involved in several projects of the German Research Foundation. Recently, he participated in various projects on geoscientific public relations.

Love! Eight Tips to a more fulfilling life Liebe! Acht Schritte zu einem erfüllteren Leben by Ulrich Stöveken ©Oktober 2014 Imprint: Theiss 192 pages ISBN 978-3-8062-2941-7 What would we be without love? Love is the finest
and most significant of all emotions and an
essential element for satisfaction in our lives. How
can we find love, how can we savour it, how can
we regain it when love seems to be lost?
Psychologist Ulrich Stöveken has developed an
eight-point-programme to put more love in one’s
life. It is, however, about more than just romantic
togetherness: It is about accepting oneself and the
other, about experiencing union and oneness,
about shaping one’s life in a positive way.
When love has been lost, this book helps to get it
back. It shows where one’s personal barriers lie
that prevent love from permeating one’s life.
Ulrich Stöveken studied art therapy and psychology. He worked in hospitals, outreach clinics and schools. In 1985 he founded a school for art therapy.

Brain Wars How Stress is Dominating us Krieg im Gehirn. Wie uns der Stress beherrscht by Frank Henning © August 2011 Imprint: WBG 144 pages, 16 b/w images, 9 charts ISBN 978-3-89678-770-5 How can we escape the stress that is so damaging
to our health? This question is answered by
alternative practitioner and biophysicist Frank
Henning.
A new project is being "attacked". Confronted
with overflowing e-mail-in-trays many say that
they feel under "constant fire". Not only language
abounds with military vocabulary concerning
stress. Neurologists have found out that, under
stress, the human brain sends out messengers
which are quite similar to those of soldiers in
combat missions. When we find ourselves
confronted with health problems due to stress, it
is time to find out how we ended up in such an
overwrought situation. How to get out of it, is
naturally another pressing question. The author
describes what makes for typical stress situations;
how one can recognize them and if anyhow
possible prevent getting mired in them and how
to escape them. His use of metaphor makes the
topic easily understandable and his lively style
inspires and entertains the reader.
Frank Henning studied physics and geophysics at the Free University in Berlin. After his diploma in biophysics he specialized in medical physics and radiation protection. Since attaining another degree in psychotherapy he has been working in the fields of psychosomatics and anxiety disorders.

Forever Yours Great Composers and their Immortal Lovers Ewig dein Große Komponisten und ihre unsterblichen Geliebten by Hans-Georg Klemm © August 2015 Imprint: Lambert Schneider 176 pages, 10 b/w illustrations ISBN 978-3-650-40074-1 What could be more beautiful than love? What
could be more moving than music? Music and love
are - to use the words of Hector Berlioz - the “two
wings of the soul“.
Hans-Georg Klemm honours the memory of those
“immortal lovers” who were the source of
inspiration to composers like Beethoven, Chopin,
Liszt or Schumann. Their influence on the
creativity of the artists cannot be over-estimated.
Without the passion that they ignited, many a
master piece like Beethoven’s Moonshine
Serenade or Chopin's Nocturnes might not have
come forth. The author shows these great
musicians from their most private side.
Hans-Georg Klemm is a teacher and writer of works of nonfiction. For many years, he has been studying the biographies of Beethoven, Wagner and Mahler.

Johannes Brahms Johannes Brahms by Hans-Georg Klemm © February 2014 Imprint: Lambert Schneider 168 pages ISBN 978-3-650-40011-6 “Er ist ein Berufener” ("He heeded his calling”) -
this is what Robert Schumann said about then 20-
year-old Johannes Brahms. He was quite right
since the young man went on to become one of
the most important composers of the 20th
century. Wilhelm Furtwängler once said about him
that it was Brahms who led German music to
world renown for the last time.
Hans-Georg Klemm leads us through the life and
works of this great musician in this entertaining
book. He focuses especially on the formative years
of his youth - usually neglected by researchers -
when Brahms lived in a notorious workers' quarter
of Hamburg.
Hans-Georg Klemm is a teacher and writer of works of nonfiction. For many years, he has been studying the biographies of Beethoven, Wagner and Mahler.

Languages of the World Why they are so different, yet similar Sprachen der Welt. Warum Sie so verschieden sind und sich doch alle gleichen
by Dieter Wunderlich © February 2015 Imprint: Lambert Schneider 288 pages, 24 b/w images, 25 charts ISBN 978-3-650-40026-0 Presently, seven billion people speak over 7,000
different languages. However, only 6% of those
languages are spoken by more than one million
speakers. Often there are not more than a
thousand speakers of a language. Dieter
Wunderlich explains the reasons for this
phenomenon.
How do new languages emerge? Which languages
are related to each other? What are the
differences between them? How do languages
spread and where does their development lead
to? The author, an acknowledged expert and
winner of the Humboldt-prize, answers all these
questions by means of excellent examples.
Wunderlich shows us the rich and fascinating
variety of languages in a vivid and coherent way.
Dieter Wunderlich received the Wilhelm-Humboldt-Award for his lifetime achievement in linguistics in 2014. He taught linguistics at the University of Düsseldorf until 2002.

time of her death, Catherine the Great possessed
almost 4,000 paintings and tens of thousands of

piety, lust for power and the pride of ownership.

collectors and patrons from the late middle ages
to today. He examines early ecclesiastical and
dynastic collections, baroque cabinets of wonders
and the public museums of the 19th century as
well as the contemporary expansion of the art
market. Not only are the collectors themselves
portrayed, but also agents, curators and critics.

The Complete Graphical Works of Alexander von Humboldt Alexander von Humboldt. Das graphische Gesamtwerk by Oliver Lubrich (ed.) © October 2015, 3rd edition Imprint: Lambert Schneider 800 pages, 1.576 colour images ISBN 978-3-654-04132-8 Alexander von Humboldt published two dozen books and more than 700 essays and articles. Less known is the fact that the natural scientist and travel writer was also an illustrator and graphic artist. More than 1.500 pictures illustrate his writings and are as diverse as his interests: As an ethnographer and culture scientist he made sketches of people, buildings and everyday objects. As a botanist, zoologist and anatomist he drew plants, animals and body details. As a geologist, geographer and cartographer he charted mountains, water bodies and continents. This highly acclaimed, extravagantly illustrated work presents Alexander von Humboldt’s complete graphical works in an attractive special edition. Shown are more than 1.500 extraordinary illustrations in excellent quality, especially from his world-famous South American travelogue. An introduction by Humboldt-specialist Oliver Lubrich and an appendix with an overview of Humboldt‘s works, descriptions of the illustrations and a chronology complete this beautiful edition. Oliver Lubrich is professor for German Literature and Comparative Literature Studies at the University of Bern. conditions for the development of medieval
pictorial arts are explained, for instance, the
underlying theological premises.

WBG Architectural History WBG Architekturgeschichte by Christian Freigang (ed.) © January 2015 Imprint: WBG 3 volumes, each with 352 pages, 165 b/w images ISBN 978-3-534-23984-9 (volume 1) ISBN 978-3-534-23985-6 (volume 2) ISBN 978-3-534-23986-3 (volume 3)
The three-volume architectural history offers much that is new in the field. This is firstly due to the
fact that comparable English-language publications have by and large not been produced over the
past decade; and secondly, on account of its chosen structure which is markedly different. The three
volumes cover Europe and additional, selected areas from c. 800 to the present, each volume
focusing on 50 key buildings across all genres of architecture. These buildings exemplify crucial
aspects and themes of architectural history whilst illustrating at the same time the relevance of
general history as well as architectural theory for their understanding.
Generally, the key buildings are described in chronological order, yet there is no intention to present
a developmental narrative in all its ramifications. Instead, each volume provides an outline of the
relevant architectural developments, discusses key positions of research, and offers a substantial
bibliography. Selected thematic blocks complement the spectrum of topics covered in each volume
and address issues such as building technologies and organisation, liturgy and church furnishings, the
classical orders or the world expositions. Dense cross-referencing among the chapters facilitate the
enhancement of knowledge and information. The structure easily allows for selective consultation of
the texts. Concise bibliographical references enable the reader to follow up on particular themes.

The first volume (‘Monasteries – Cathedrals – Castles’) covers the Middle Ages to c. 1500, the second
(‘Order – Invention – Representation’) engages with the architecture of the Early Modern period
from 1450 to 1800 – that is, the styles of Renaissance and Baroque –, and the third volume explores
the modern age from a long-time perspective, ranging from the French Revolution to the present
(‘Architecture – Technology – Society’). The thresholds of c. 1500 and c. 1800 follow a well-
established model of periodization within the history of European architecture which is strongly
supported by the evidence. Prior to both the rediscovery of the ‘grammar’ of the classical orders –
the phenomenon known as Vitruvianism – and the invention of mass-market prints in the fifteenth
century, the process of building was fundamentally different: it was a consummately practised
craftsmanship in the service of liturgy and ritual, defence and traffic. Thereafter, in the age of
Vitruvianism, architecture came to be operated as a rhetorical and artistic language, to be
understood and assessed by means of a universal canon. Around 1800, architecture underwent yet
another pivotal change: henceforth, it was also intended to exert an immediate impact on the
viewer, or else recall older styles in manifold ways. New construction techniques were posing
particular challenges in terms of design. Ever since, Vitruvianism has been subjected to a
fundamental condemnation or, at least, revision.
Thus, the three volumes provide both an exemplary and wide-ranging account of all aspects of
European architectural history. Throughout, they are informed by the current state of research,
thereby avoiding yet another plodding developmental account of the history of architecture, and
instead offering a stimulating read. They are textbooks for all those engaged with architecture and its
history – be it for professional or lay readers. All authors are renowned experts and university
teachers in their respective fields: Christoph Brachmann, Mary H. Cain Distinguished Professor at
UNC Chapel Hill (medieval architecture); Meinrad von Engelberg, associate professor at the
Technische Universität Darmstadt (early modern architecture); Christian Freigang, professor at the
Freie Universität Berlin (modern architecture).
