PTA Unit 6.10.7 September 2012 Volume 35 Issue 1
Welcome to the 2012-2013 school year at Canyon Creek! We are off to a great start and are enjoying serving you as your PTA Co-Presidents this year.
The ice cream social was the perfect way to kick off the school year and was a big success. Thank you to all of our teachers who opened up their classrooms and were on hand to greet each student with a smile. It was wonderful to be able to drop off school supplies, meet teachers and locate classrooms. This really helped the first day of school run smoothly, cutting down on parent traffic, which helped ease congestion in our parking lot, hallways, classrooms, etc. The students were ready to go on day one! Thank you also to our fantastic office staff who were on hand to answer parent questions.
We served over 900 free ice cream sundaes to our Canyon Creek families and are grateful to all of the volunteers who helped run this event. The sun was shining and families enjoyed reconnecting with old friends and making new ones. The playground was hopping and we all had a chance to come together as a community.
Our next big event is the Walk-a-thon, which will take place on October 5th. This is our largest school fundraiser and 100% of the money goes directly to programs that support our students! Science, our art docent program, scholarships, family nights, playground equipment, field trips, author visits and equipment teachers need for their classrooms are just some examples of what the walk-a-thon helps to fund.
The first PTA meeting will be held on Tuesday, October 2nd in the cafeteria, from 6:30-8:00 p.m. Mark your calendars now! We will conduct some PTA business and then will have the chance to hear from our Principal, Pete Misner. He will be talking about the rapid growth Canyon Creek has experienced and what has been going on at the district level to address parent concerns.

PRESIDENT’S LETTER CONT.
We have extended the normal meeting time as we anticipate that this is a topic that parents are invested in and we want to do a thorough job in sharing information and keeping communication lines open.
Canyon Creek is a special school. Together, our fantastic staff, eager students and supportive parents make up a community that we feel lucky to be a part of. We look forward to a fabulous year!

This year’s budget will be voted on at our
General PTA Meeting, Tuesday, Oct. 2nd.
The strength of the Canyon Creek PTA lies in its membership—the parents, teachers, school
administrators, business leaders, and community members who devote themselves to making
a positive difference in the lives of children. Members are the lifeblood of PTA and provide
the passion, leadership, and hard work needed to fulfill PTA’s Mission.
YOUR PTA MEMBERSHIP helps provide funds for both inside and outside the classroom, is a sign of
support for our students and our staff, and is our legislative voice!
WE ARE LOOKING FORWARD to the Walk-A-Thon, Popcorn Fridays, Skating Parties, Family Science Nights,
BINGO, Art Docents, Art Gala, and so much more!
BECOME A MEMBER TODAY! BECOME A MEMBER TODAY!
PTA MEMBERSHIP IS OUR VOICE AND VOTE. It is not about volunteering or attending meetings. PTA is the oldest child advocacy organization in existence that gives all parents a voice in their
children’s education. PTA continues to be relevant as it advocates for ALL children and provides opportunities to make a difference in the life of kids. Remember, becoming a PTA member at Canyon Creek gives our school important voting strength at the WA State PTA level (the more members, the
stronger our vote). ANY ONE CAN BE A PTA M EMBER OF CANY ON CREEK and it is not just limited to parents of students or folks planning on volunteering with PTA events. Membership is the heart of PTA
and we all make a difference, so consider becoming a member today.
**ALL MEMBERS WHO JOIN THE PTA WILL ALSO RECEIVE A CANYON CREEK STUDENT DIRECTORY FOR FREE!**
To join, simply fill out the form below and return with payment to your child’s teacher or to the school office
staff. Please make checks payable to Canyon Creek PTA. Thanks for your support!

SCIENCE CLUB: 3RD & 4TH
GRADERS
THIS YEAR SCIENCE CLUB, taught by teachers Serena Lindley and Erin Smith and sponsored by the Canyon Creek PTA, is for 3rd & 4th graders every Friday during their lunch recess (11:45am-12:15pm). Each week students will have an opportunity to perform various science experiments. Some of the topics this fall include an oil-spill cleanup, a science scavenger hunt, and much more! To participate in the science club students in 3rd & 4th grades obtain a pass from their teacher and come to room 19 after lunch dismissal. Following completion of the experiment, students will then return to their classrooms.
SCIENCE EXPERIMENT OF THE MONTH
EACH MONTH IN THE HOWLER, there will be a fun science topic with an experiment you can do together at home as a family. The experiment can be done with supplies around the house and is safe to do under adult supervision.
RAINBOW SCIENCE- I’m sure you’ve all seen a rainbow in the sky, but what makes a rainbow? A rainbow is an optical phenomenon caused when light is reflected by water droplets in the air. Try this experiment to make your own rainbow: Find a sunny spot in your house by a window. Hold a clear glass of water above a piece of white paper by the sunny window and see the rainbow reflect on the white paper.
BOEING AFTER SCHOOL SCIENCE PROGRAM: 4TH & 5TH
GRADERS
NEW THIS FALL, we are pleased to partner with Boeing to bring a free after school science program for 4th & 5th graders. This science program is a hands-on inquiry of science topics related to aerospace engineering and physics. Permission slips were sent home from your child’s teacher and must be returned by Thursday, October 4 for consideration in the program. Due to overwhelming interest, participants will be selected on a lottery basis and parents will be notified by October 5 if their child can attend this program. The program from 3-4pm after school on Thursdays in the library on the following dates (Oct. 11, 18, 25, Nov. 1, 8, & 15). If you are interested in volunteering to help lend a hand to the Boeing experts (no science experience required), please contact Lori Hays at [email protected].

There are some interesting things happening in
the PTA right now at the state level. In Olympia,
the Parent Teacher Association is trying to tackle
the idea of cutting school days in order to help
balance our state’s budget, finding that it just
doesn’t make sense. The governor’s proposal
to cut and later ask voters to “buy back” four
days of school gambles with our children’s
future, and Washington State PTA strongly
opposes it. The move would land the state in
a legal mess and cause tremendous
disruption. Find out more about and join
the conversation at

The Reflections Program is a National PTA and
Washington State PTA cultural arts competition. The
purpose of this program is to provide an opportunity for
students to use their creative talents by expressing
themselves through their own original works.
Each year, Reflections challenges students to create art
that supports a specific theme. Themes are selected from
thousands of ideas submitted by students to National
PTA's Reflections Theme Search.
2012-13 Reflections theme is:
"The magic of a moment....".
Young artists get involved in Reflections through their
local PTA or PTSA. A student may submit an entry in any
of six arts areas. Only original works of art are accepted.
The six art areas are: Literature, Music Composition,
Photography, Visual Arts, Film/Video and
Choreography/Dance
