FSSC 22000 is a food safety management systemcertification scheme based on existing standards forcertification: ISO 22000, ISO 22000-1, and FSSC22000.

FSSC 22000 certification is accredited under the ISO/IEC 17021 standard. Manufacturers that are alreadycertified to ISO 22000 will only need an additionalreview of technical specifications for sector-specificPRPs to meet this certification scheme. Organizationsthat want to integrate quality in their managementsystems to meet the requirements of this certificationscheme.

It is developed for the certification of food safetysystems of organizations in the food chain that processor manufacture animal products, perishable vegetablebased products, products with a long shelf life, (other)food ingredients like additives, vitamins, bio-culturesand food packaging material manufacturing.

The FSSC 22000 certification scheme has been givenfull recognition by the Global Food Safety InitiativeBoard of Directors. GFSI promotes commonacceptance of GFSI recognized standards by retailersworldwide in order to improve the cost efficiency offood safety audits for food suppliers.

How does my company become certified?

Certification enables manufacturers to focus theirFood Safety efforts on scientific and technicaladvances, and their audit resources onimprovement rather than compliance.

As the scheme is based on an ISO standard: 1) it hastruly worldwide credibility; and 2) it provides acommon language, improving communicationacross the supply chain.

We highly recommend that you initiate a relationshipwith your certification body prior to completing theimplementation of your system. This will help youplan for the certification process in terms ofbudgeting and scheduling. As part of the planningprocess, we also highly recommend a pre-assessment, both to assess your preparedness andto increase your overall chances of passing yourinitial certification audit the first time.

You must select a certification body that hasaccreditation against ISO 17021, and the relevantAB must be an IAF/MLA signatory. The audit teamassigned by your certification body will perform astage 1 and stage 2 audit and after analysis andreview of the findings an audit report on theassessment will be issued. When all non-conformities have been answered and accepted,and an Executive Committee approval is obtained,then a certificate will be issued with a validity of threeyears (every year a surveillance audit will be done inthe following two years to maintain certification).
