In my opening sequence the character of Jade is an emo/Gothic character Because of this we have used mise-en- scene to create for a typical emo look which is vibrant hair, dark clothes and heavy eyeliner .
We wanted her to appear as a loud, outspoken teenage character so we went for an all black costume which included black converses and also a black hoodie, we choose these particular items because converse is a familiar brand and is also commonly used by emo/gothic archetypes.
Her costume also represents her personality - Although she seems like she is a loud character instead she is quite vulnerable and hides under the make-up and the clothes as shown in our opening sequence when the dialogue occurs.
In our opening sequence the character Vanessa is portrayed as an evil villain. This due to her dialogue and her presence rather than her costume as she appears as a shadow and you only see her hand when she lifts Jades blindfold. As her character is never seen it adds mystery and excitement to the sequence. We used mise- en –scene particularly lighting to create this effect and to construct her character .
As the character of Vanessa is Black and a villain this reinforces the ‘Mean black girl’ stereotype that is common in films, Therefore we have conformed to this stereotype and have negatively represented he character.
Inspiration for Jade
Bright, Vibrant Hair.
Heavy Eyeliner
Jade
The stereotypes we reinforced in our opening sequence is emo/ goth girl stereotype through costume. We subverted this personality wise as she is not a care free person but instead is quite weak and vulnerable which is demonstrated through her dialogue and body language.
This is positive and negative representation as it is not entirely stereotypical as we have subverted some of the stereotypes. However it is negative because it conforms to the ‘Vulnerable white girl’ stereotype. I could change this by including more characters of the same race with varying personalities to cancel this stereotype out.
Another stereotype we reinforced in our opening sequence was that London is a dangerous place as Jade gets abducted in broad daylight besides a canal. This is a negative representation as it causes people to have negative connotations towards London.
We were trying to create a re-invented version of Chloe Grace Moretz so rather than just being a loveable, Vulnerable character we wanted her to have more edge and to be of a clandestine nature.
Lisbeth Salander
Rooney Mara plays the character of Lisbeth Salander in the thriller film The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo . This is one of the only examples I've found of a thriller film containing an extravagant individual that subverts the conventions of a typical thriller character.
Compared to Jade they both seem to be loud and expressive characters as their costume speaks volumes about their personality. They contrast each other when It comes to age as Lisabeth appears as a woman because of her costume, it also makes her appear to be tougher and ‘harder’ than Jade. Jade appears as a teenager as she is wearing clothes that are typically worn by teenagers as they are comfortable and simple.
