Role of Dr. Ambedkar in our parliamentary democracy

Page 20: house ppt

Ambedkar served on the Defence Advisory Committee, and the Viceroy's Executive Council as minister for labour.Dr. Ambedkar notion of “democratic government” went back to the fundamental idea of “government of the people, by the people and for the people”. But “democracy” meant much more to him than democratic government. It was a way of life:

Page 21: house ppt

•“Democracy is not merely a form of government. It is primarily a mode of associated living, of conjoint communicated experience. It is essentially an attitude of respect and reverence towards fellowmen.” said by DR.B.R. Ambedkar .

• Upon India's independence on 15 August 1947, the new Congress-led government invited Ambedkar to serve as the nation's first Law Minister, which he accepted.

• On 29 August, he was appointed Chairman of the Constitution Drafting Committee, charged by the Assembly to write India's new Constitution.

•The future of Indian democracy depends a great deal on a revival of Dr. Ambedkar visionary conception of democracy.• India's lawmakers hoped to eradicate the socio-economic inequalities and lack of opportunities for India's depressed classes through these measures.•The Constitution was adopted on 26 November 1949 by the Constituent Assembly.
