The axe and the harp

(enry VIII is probably the most wellknown of the Tudor kings due to his role inthe separation of the 2hurch of Englandfrom the &oman 2atholic 2hurch actthrough which he made himself thesupreme (ead of the 2hurch of England. The marriage of (enry with 2atherine of *ragon made

sure the strong links with Spain were retained but the problems for (enry began when it became clear to himthat his wife was not able to produce a male heir to thethrone.

%hen (enry came to the throne England had only asmall navy. 5uring his reign (enry spent a great deal ofmoney building up a large 6eet to defend the kingdom. The ships used were called galleons these were verylarge ocean going ships four times as long as they werewide. They had a special deck for cannons but were broadslow andnot very manouvrable.

Eli%abeth0s reign is 1nown as the Eli%abethan era, famous

abo$e all for the flourishing of English drama, led by playwrightssuch as 2illiam Sha1espeare and hristopher Marlowe, and forthe seafaring prowess of English ad$enturers such as Sir4rancis 5ra1e. Eli%abeth is ac1nowledged as a charismaticperformer and a dogged sur$i$or, in an age when go$ernment

was ramshac1le and limited.

5uring ((+ years of #udor rule, England became richerthan e$er before. As the country became wealthier, towns grew, beautiful houses were built and schools and colleges were setup. Arts and crafts flourished too. England was home to great

eligion in England changed depending on the $iews ofthe monarch and people often felt confused. #hey were told tochange what they belie$ed, how they worshipped 9od andhow they decorated churches.

&n my opinion the #udors epoch is the most lo$elyperiod of the :ritish history and will remain fore$er in this way.
