News From Your Potentate Greetings:

Let me start by asking for a little help. We really need help with watch-ing the building. What we need is for Shriners to monitor our doors and the building during the day and the evening. This is a very easy,

rewarding job to do that will help our Shriners, Ladies, guests and our staff feel safe. Waco has come up with a fantastic point system for you to earn plenty of crown jewels. I worked many hours at the west door and met many people and got involved with many events, it is the best thing I could have ever done. It’s very important we get involved and this is a great way to do just that.

In May we kicked it off in Missouri City having breakfast with the Masonic Lodge and a quick parade. Next, we were off to Richmond for the Mushroom Festival and parade. The Richmond Shrine Club cooked a large hog and fed us all. Thank you Richmond Shrine, you out did yourselves again! Meanwhile down at Truman lake, Jack Everly, his family, and our Mounted Guard had the 30th annual Buddy Bass Classic. What a challenge they had this year! The lake was over 20 ft. high and they had to move to a different marina. Even though they had to do that, over a hundred boats showed up and gave it a go. A special thank you to Bass Pro, the Warsaw Shrine Club, and all the folks who pitched in and made it happen. Great job to you all.

The next weekend was our Ceremonial and the 5-or-More dinner. A great day was had and lots of spaghetti was eaten. Jerry Grimes was our class honoree and it was my pleasure to present him with a lifetime membership for all he has done to make the Shrine better. I would like to thank our First Ceremonial Master and his Lady Mary along with our Second Ceremonial Master, Recorder Mike Wheeler and his ritual cast, as well as the Arch Degree Team, and ole Cars, you all did a great job. Membership is the key to our survival and many new things, ideas and changes are coming with our Membership Team.

Now let’s talk about the things that are getting done. As we all have heard we must put a new roof on Bennett, we have received all of the bids and it looks like around 135K is going to be the cost. Ouch! Also our director has been working on many other maintenance projects along with a lot of Shriners who have pitched in to help do those things. Without the work of all of those volunteers we would really be up a creek. Keep in mind that we could really us a little financial help putting the new roof on. We are also working hard to do many other things we can afford to make our Temple better and safer.

June is a big month. Warsaw, Boonville, and a Toga party, along with many other fun things to do. Keep selling gun raffle tickets and don’t forget, the Circus is coming! The Circus is com-ing! Keep your eyes open for the app. and Facebook posts, “like” and “share”, also for events and updates. If we all get involved, what a great Shrine we will have!

See you all soon at one of our upcoming events!Best Regards,

Randy Berry 2017 Potentate Ararat Shrine

BLUE SPRINGS SHRINE CLUBBy Fred Harle, P.P.

They always say, “April Showers BringMay Flowers.” Well, here it is April 10th,haven’t seen much rain here in our greatcity of Blue Springs, MO, but you knowwhat, if you are like me those May flowersare already starting to bloom. You knowthe kind I’m talking about, those pretty lit-tle yellow flowers that we spend a smallfortune trying to eliminate from our yardevery year. Yep, they are called dande-lions. If you don’t have any I’ll be morethan happy to bring you some of the onesfrom my front yard. That is just before Itry to get rid of them.

Today Jennie’s brother Kenny and hisLady Emma who live in Warrensburg, MOdrove up to see us. We met at Bob Evan’sRestaurant in Lee’s Summit, after whichall four of us visited the Swap Meet. Wow,what a super extravaganza. An even big-ger surprise was to be greeted by Ill. SirKevin Sleyster and being chauffeured byour Recorder, Mike Wheeler. Upon enter-ing the rear gate we were greeted by thehardest working Shriner I know , NobleMac McWilliams. Try and keep up withthis Noble and you’ll find it’ s impossible. Thanks Mac for all that you do for Ararat.

Let me tell you about our March BSSCmeeting. To begin with, our meetings withNoble Bill Fickle at the helm just get bet-ter and better . Following the usual open -ing ceremonies for our Shrine Club, we getdown to the business of trying to catch thefatted calf so to speak. See picture of ourDivan Liaison Officer, 2nd CeremonialMaster Clarence Kirby followed by alegion of hungry Shriners. We also treatour ladies okay . Please note picture withladies, Carol Newport, Vivian Snell,Marguerite Merryman, and Pat Stansell.

Thank you ladies for continuing to shareBSSC with all the rest of us.

Our President, Bill Fickle arranged aspectacular program for our entertainment.Jordan Mitchell, a member of DeMolay, presented a Ceremony of Life in full form.Wow, super impressive, you could hear apin drop. What a treat to see and hear sucha talented young man.

We treat our dignitaries with respect, and it’s always a pleasure to put out the oldBSSC welcome mat for any and all templeofficers. Please don’t wait for a specialinvite. The door is always open and wewant you to come and join us. See photoof President Bill Fickle, 2nd CeremonialMaster Clarence Kirby, and AmbassadorBud Higginbotham.

Our good buddy Noble Lou Sohn hadsome stents inserted close to his heart andhe is progressing great. He heard aboutPast President Bill Clinton doing okaywith his so he got some.

Last, but also a very important part ofour BSSC team is Noble James Gar gotta. He puts together our club newsletter , sec-ond to none, that keeps all our membersinformed about what’s going to happen, and what has happened. Not only aboutanything and everything in and about ourclub, but other clubs, uniformed units, andour temple in general. If you don’t believeit come see for yourself! BSSC meets onthe 4th Monday night of each month at6:30 pm in the American Legion Buildingon 7 Hwy in Blue Springs, MO. Call us,we’ll tell you how to get here.

That’s enough for this time! So untilnext time, a hug doesn’ t cost anything togive or get. Think about it!!!!!!

Well, here we are in the month of May, which meansthe parade season has started. Hope that everyone hada good time at Missouri City and Richmond.

Let’s go back a couple of months for a minute. InMarch, Noble Art Kinder brought his grandson to O.B.rehearsal. We all got to meet him and made him welcome. He really seemed to enjoy watching his granddad play, however I think that might have made Art a little nervous.Art had said before we got started that his grandsonwas here visiting from Canada. It seemed to me that wemight have a future Master Mason in the works.

On a sad note, that month we also lost our last char-ter member of the O.B., Noble Loren Lundy. Hepassed away at the young age of 100, a milestonewhich he turned last August. All our prayers and goodwishes go out to the rest of his family. He was oneNoble that stood out above the rest in every way possible. He is truly missed.

Next we have a little bit about the O.B. SpringDance. It may not have been the best turnout we haveever had, but President Waco still did an outstandingjob. He made sure that those who did make it reallyhad a good time; so, “Hats off and job well done,” toour President. And let’s not forget our ladies for having the Silent Action in the back of Bennett; “A

GREATBIG THANK YOU,” from President Wacoand the rest of us as well.

Now how about the month of April? Hmmmm, let’ssee! It was reported that our President Waco, who alsoplays the bass drum, is very versatile. He can scratchhis back with one hand and continue to play well withthe other. Who knew?

On another note, the O.B. would like to welcomeback Noble Don Lanning. He took a trip to Englandfor a little while but had to come back because he didnot have a visa to be able to stay longer. He said that hewas having a great time over there with his wife, andgot to go and see his son as well. So all in all the tripmay have been short but the time was well spent.

Just to touch a little bit on the Swap Meet, the O.B.had a pretty good turnout to help in all areas from thepop wagon to picking up trash. President Waco wouldjust like to say, “THANKS GUYS.” He couldn't havedone it without us. Saturday was the best day. It wascrowded but we all managed to make it through.Sunday was not as busy, but still a pretty good turnout. So from the nobles of the Oriental Band to all of thenobles that were able to make it, GREATJOB! Hopeto see you in the fall for the next one.

Well, here we are in the month of May, which means

the parade season has started. Hope that everyone had

a good time at Missouri City and Richmond.

Let’s go back a couple of months for a minute. In

March, Noble Art Kinder brought his grandson to O.B.

rehearsal. We all got to meet him and made him welcome.

He really seemed to enjoy watching his granddad play,

however I think that might have made Art a little nervous.

Art had said before we got started that his grandson

was here visiting from Canada. It seemed to me that we

might have a future Master Mason in the works.

On a sad note, that month we also lost our last char-

ter member of the O.B., Noble Loren Lundy. He

Welcome to all of our newly initiated Nobles! What a great time at the Ceremonial. I think it was a big hit with everybody. We obligated sixteen new Nobles. It was also enjoyable to watch our membership having fun together. I want to thank the Units and

Clubs for being there and bringing the desserts. I hope we can carry this momentum throughout the summer and right into CSSA in Overland Park later this summer.

We will be having a Fall Ceremonial and I would challenge each of you to bring in a new Noble. The Membership Committee will be working hard to spread the word about our fraternity.

You have heard me say and write before, that bringing in a candidate is only part of the job. Once in, this new Noble needs mentoring. Think back to when you were a new Noble. You didn’t really know everyone, what there was to do at the Temple, meeting times, what are Units and Clubs , when do they meet, and so on. These are the types of things that the mentor can help with. After a while the new Noble will start feeling comfortable and will not need direction, at this point you have done your job.

So, as we move through the summer and participate in the various activities at the Shrine Center, make sure the Noble that you brought in is aware of what is going on. Sometimes all it takes is a phone call.

NOBLES, we have a problem. We have a large number of Nobles with incorrect information in their profile; bad addresses, email’s, phone numbers, etc. We need you to help us verify your information. There are two ways to do this. You can go online to ‘webfez.shrinenet.org’ and reg-ister, this gives you access to your profile information to correct it online ,the second method is, to call the Ararat Shrine Office at 816-923-1975 and speak with one of our office people. They will be happy to assist you in updating your information. Please help us in this endeavor.

Should you have questions concerning membership or need assistance with membership ac-tivities, feel free to reach out to any one of us. We are glad to help.

MEMBERSHIP MATTERS!BY JAMES GARGOTTA, MEMBERSHIP CHAIRMAN

The View from the Cheap SeatsBY WILLIAM WARREN, PROUD NOBLE

May 13th 2017 was a great day for the Nobility of Ararat Shrine. New life was breathed into our order with the creation of new Nobles. It was a joy to see my brothers in their various uniforms

and our leadership attired in their suits with bright ties and happy smiles. I want to extend my gratitude to our Divan for the effort they put into

making the day memorable and well organized.Of the many events the day offered. Two stood out in my mind. One

was the talk given by our Hospital Transportation Club. Spokesman Le-roy Graham talked of the Shrine Hospitals and the incredible work they accomplish. Then a true gift was given to all in attendance. A tiny child arose who is a Shrine Kid. Young Autumn Booth, along with her mother, told her story about how the doctors at the Shrine Hospital had helped her. As her mother and she talked, her sweet ways and joyful smile captured the heart of all in the room. If you missed it, you truly missed out. Nothing is more powerful than a child smiling and telling how her life was changed by the work of our fraternity. Her shy smile and timid voice charmed us all. As she told her story she would lift her leg behind her and seemed to dance with the tension she felt. But it was obvious to all that she enjoyed telling her story. We certainly enjoyed hearing it! Her role in the arch production was near perfection. As she was being held for the walk under the arch she looked at the crowd and smiled and waved with the exuber-ance only a child surrounded with love can show. Sweet Little Autumn, you have just inherited a rather large crop of Grandfathers. We will be proudly watching from afar as you move through your life.

The second event that impacted me was the Fezzing of our new Nobles. My Candidate was the second to be fezzed. As we walked up the center of Bennett Auditorium to be announced by our Brother Jimmy Jones, my thoughts turned to the lady walking alongside our soon to be Noble. She, too, is a product of the Shrine’s philanthropy. She carried her husband’s fez and looked truly happy that her family had embarked on this journey. She was smiling as she placed the fez on Noble James Hugill’s head and I thanked those who came before us for making her day possible. It is a source of amazement to me that our hospital work has touched so many lives in such a positive way. My friend Amber Hugill would not be on the life path she is sharing with her husband and children and we would not have the privilege of knowing either of them.

Yes, our Ceremonials are a time for celebration and renewal. We, as Shriners and Masons, have once again added to our ranks and renewed our own faith in what we stand for. As a member of Ararat, I want to ask a small favor of each of you. Take a moment to ask a fellow Mason to be-come a member of the shrine. We will all benefit and our fraternity will continue to thrive.

We finally had great weather for ourmeeting in April: no rain, no snow, no 20degrees and windy! Not that the weatherhad ever discouraged our members. Wehad the same great turnout, be the weath-er good or not so good!

Dignitaries attending this month wereLiaison Officer Dave Bushakra and LadyMolly, and Ambassador Curt Karnes andLady Sue. These two couples truly repre-sent good works and good fellowship forthe Shrine and we look forward eachmonth to seeing them.

We were happy to welcome back Daveand Nora Hutchison. They brought backa “truckload” of fish and invited us to theirhomefor the June meeting and a fish fry!

Dave, incidentally, won the 50/50 draw-ing, but that was in no way connected tothe invitation. We would never use anysort of bribery to get Dave and Nora to fixfish for us!

Our guest speaker was Sally Nance,Administrator for the Excelsior SpringsHospital. She gave us a brief history onthe hospital and all the improvementsthey have made, and the new independentliving center completed recently.

Our May meeting will be held again atCatricks Café in Lawson. Tell yourMasonic friends what fun and fellowshipwe have, and bring someone with you tothe next meeting.

Blue Springs Shrine ClubBY JIM GARGOTTA

Our article missed being printed in last month’s Ararat News, so I’ll make up for it this month. I want to start out by welcoming our newest members; Noble Mike and Lady Sin-cee Farris, Noble Bill and Lady Lisa Spotts, Noble Kimball and Lady Dona Wilcox, Noble

Larry and Lady Susan Adolphsen, Noble Jim and Lady Judy Lamb and Noble Mike Fisher and his Lady Tamela Crane. Our club just keeps growing which is why we moved to the Elks Lodge in Blue Springs. The facility is great and is going to work out well for us.

The club attended the World War I Museum on April 22nd. The museum was fantastic and something of which Kansas City, Missouri should be very proud. We went to the Dubliner Irish Pub afterwards and had lunch.

We had a great time at our ‘Ladies Night Out’ event at Salty Iguana in Independence in May. On July 14th we will be hosting our annual Texas Hold’em tournament at SidePockets in

Blue Springs. Check-in starts at 6:00 p.m. and the action starts at 7:00 p.m. There will be ad-ditional buy-ins, 50/50 drawing, a raffle for a bucket of booze and much more. Drink and food specials will also be available.

It’s not all fun and games now. The club sold 205 bags of Vidalia Onions to support Ararat and the Club. I don’t know how he does it, but our President, Noble Tony Kenna, somehow works in a little fun time even while we’re selling.

We would like to extend our condolences to the Conn Family on the passing of Noble Richard Conn Sr.

Take note, we meet the fourth Monday of each month. It’s incorrect in our Ararat Calendar. We meet at 6:30 p.m. and the dinner and meeting begins at 7:00 p.m. If you would like to join us and be a part of the fun let us know. Call Noble Jim or Lady Gail Gargotta at 816-228-2401 if you have any questions or need directions. I should also point out that we generally don’t have our monthly meetings at the Elks lodge in May, June, July and August. These months are reserved for Club Outings and fundraisers.

Lafayette County Shrine ClubBY RON ELLING, SCRIBE

President Delmar Dothage called the Lafayette County Shrine Club meeting to order on May 11 at the Masonic Lodge in Higginsville. President Dothage gave the invocation. A supper of chicken, cheesy rice, broccoli, cauliflower and carrots, rolls and an assortment of desserts

was served. The cooks were given a round of applause. After the Shriner pledge of allegiance, Delmar Dothage welcomed Marshall and Liaison Da-

vid Hutton, Ambassador Alvin Kallenberger and his Lady Louise, Tim Rechterman of the Uni-formed Units and Lafayette County Nobles and their Ladies. Money was turned in for the onions and the gun raffle tickets.

The minutes of the April meeting were not available at the time and the treasurer’s report was still being figured due to the onion money just being turned in. It was noted that all of the onions have been paid for at the Ararat Shrine. It was voted to donate $50 to be used for food for the upcoming ceremonial that will be held in the Grand Ballroom. Ron Elling moved to give $200 to the Richmond Shrine Club for the joint meeting they host in June. Keith Stoneking seconded the motion and the motion passed. It was also moved by Tim Rechterman to donate $75 toward a pig roast that is held at the Veteran’s Home in Warrensburg. Bernie Miller seconded the motion and the motion was approved.

Tim Rechterman made an announcement that the Marshall Parade is an all Shrine Parade so is rather impressive to see.

Ambassador Alvin Kallenberger gave dates of upcoming events at the Ararat Temple. David Hutton announced that the Ararat Temple is in need of a new roof which will cost

around $130,000. He also announced that there should be around 20 candidates for the ceremo-nial. He encouraged members to attend the event. He shared information that Bingo is a good money maker for the Temple and encouraged members to attend a Bingo event.

The Importance of Lawn Mower Safety

Shriners Hospitals for Children® is committed to helping keep kids safe, and injury-free.

Although they may seem like a common household tool, lawn mowers are one of the most dangerous items in our homes. Thousands of people are hurt while using lawnmowers each year – these injuries can include deep cuts;

loss of fingers, toes, and even limbs; burns and broken bones. However, many lawn mower-related injuries can be prevented by following some safety guidelines.

OSOCT16TIOL

Keep Children Safe • Children under 6 years of age should be kept indoors

during mowing. • Make sure children are a safe distance away from the

area you plan to mow because rocks and debris often can shoot out while the lawn mower is running.

• Keep a close eye on children when a lawn mower is in use. Make sure they do not run into the mower’s path.

• Never allow children to play with the mower, even when it is turned off. A lawn mower is not a toy.

• Children should be at least 12 years old before operating a walk-behind lawn mower and at least 16 years old to operate a riding mower.

• Never allow children or any other passengers on a riding lawn mower because of the potential for falling under the mower and sustaining serious injuries.

Weather and Terrain • Do not cut grass when it’s wet because it can cause

your feet to lose traction and slide. • Do not use a mower on hills or slopes, to avoid having

it tip over and cause injury.

Prior to Mowing • Read your mower’s instruction manual and familiarize

yourself with the product prior to use.• Use a mower with a control that stops it from moving

forward if the handle is released.• Clear your lawn of items such as nails, sticks, rocks,

toys, sports entertainment, dog bones, wire and equipment parts, so the debris does not cause damage or hurt anyone.

During Usage• Wear close-fitting long pants and long-sleeved shirts,

eye protection and heavy gloves. • Do not wear sandals or be barefoot. Wear sturdy

shoes with good traction. • Do not wear jewelry. • Always fill and start lawn mowers outdoors. • Never fill the tank with gasoline when the lawn

mower is on or hot. • Do not remove safety devices or guards on switches. • Never reach underneath a mower because the blade

remains engaged even when it is shut off. • Do not mow in reverse unless absolutely necessary. • To remove debris from mower use a stick or broom

handle, not your hands. • Always shut off the engine before leaving the

mower unattended. • Stay away from the engine cowling, as it can become

very hot and burn unprotected flesh. • Wait for blades to stop completely before crossing

gravel roads, unclogging the chute, or removing the grass catcher.

To learn more, watch our animated educational video about lawn mower safety, available for viewing on our YouTube channel, youtube.com/shrinershospitals, and share with your friends and family. In the video, Fezzy, our cute and cuddly Love to the rescue® ambassador and mascot, shares tips on lawn mower safety in a fun and engaging film for all ages. Should an injury occur, the physicians and staff of Shriners Hospitals are here to help. For patient referral information, please call 800-237-5055 in the U.S. or 800-361-7256 in Canada. Both lines are staffed weekdays between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., EST.

Shriners Hospitals Wants Kids to Stay Safe

Ararat Needle GuildBY JERRI DOWDY

Thank you Illustrious Sir Randy for the wonderful luncheon. The restaurant did a great job on the food, it was delicious. It was nice to have the Potentate, Divan ladies and past first ladies join us for lunch.

The second meeting in May is packing day. On packing day we “pack up” all the articles we’ve been working on so hard and mail them to 6 different hospitals. The ladies have been busy finishing up all of the items they have been working on so they can be shipped.

We would like to see more ladies at Needle Guild. You don’t have to be able to sew; we have other things you can do. We meet on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month (except July, Aug. & Dec.) from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in Bennett Auditorium. We also have a short business meeting, enjoy lunch, and visit, visit. Hope to see you at a meeting soon.

Ole CarsBY WESTON MILLER, VICE PRESIDENT/SCRIBE

The Ole Cars have been busy lately. We have not only been getting our vehicles out and ready for parade season, but on March 24th and 25th ,we were at Bartle Hall with the Me-cum Auto Auction organizing and driving the cars going across the Mecum auction block.

The Ole Cars appreciates all the help that we received from friends, family and Nobles. On May 13, at our Spring Ceremonial at Ararat Shrine, several of our members displayed

their vehicles on the patio for our new Nobles to see. Also, at the spring Ceremonial, several of our members served as workma\yn building the arch during the arch production.

There is a lot of excitement among the Ole Cars surrounding the upcoming events at Ararat. Such as the upcoming parades, the Sportsman Event on August 5th, Central States Shrine Con-vention on August 31st-September 2nd in Overland Park, and the 2017 Ararat Shrine Circus, just to name a few. If anyone is interested, the Ole Cars meet at 7:30 pm on the 1st Monday of the month at Ararat Shrine.

Interesting InformationBY NOBLE GARY DAVIS

By the time you read this we will be well on our way towards summer. Early May was very busy. May 6th was one really FULL DAY! First, a Parade in Missouri City that morn-ing, then on to Richmond for another Parade that afternoon, Buddy Bass Tournament and

Sportsman Gun Raffle at Bass Pro. Jack Weidman, from the Greeters, and I sold Sportsman Gun Raffle tickets at Bass Pro,in Independence, from 10-12:00pm. Poor Jack had stayed out until 3am Saturday morning, so for some reason he was a little tired and needed to leave at 2PM . Just kidding Jack!! I appreciated your help! I noticed that customer traffic was still very good, and the NRA People were there until 5:00, so I decided to stay until 5:00 also. I am glad I did since I sold another 19 tickets after 2:00. We sold a total of 41 tickets. I had planned on going to the Rich-mond Parade that same day, since I am a member of Richmond Shrine Club, but Donnie Fowler asked me if I would go and do the Bass Pro deal, and I did. The Richmond Shrine Club fed all of the Shriners that were in the parades a barbequed 210 lb. whole hog!! I am sure they all enjoyed it. MAYBE they saved me a sandwich?????? Buddy Raasch stopped by from the Richmond Shrine Club and brought Jack and I a bottle of water and bought 5 raffle tickets. We appreciated him coming by and showing his support of the Gun Raffle and the Richmond Shrine Club. I under-stand that Donnie Fowler has said IF Richmond Shrine Club does not win First place on gun raffle sales again this year that he is going to wear a DRESS and serve food to the winning club or unit. So, seeing Donnie Fowler in a DRESS is NOT a good thought for me, so let’s all buy more gun raffle tickets from Richmond Shrine Club members!!

With 2 Parades and the Buddy Bass Tournament going on the same weekend, it stretched our Nobles a little thin. Some were in Warsaw helping with the Bass Tournament and some were doing parades, so I think we can all see why we need more Shriners to help participate in our com-munity eand fundraising events. REMEMBER IT IS ALL ABOUT HAVING FUN AND HELP-ING THE KIDS!!

Bass Pro is a GREAT SPONSOR for the Shriners! They are sponsors of the Buddy Bass Tournament, the Circus Book and now the Sportsman Gun Raffle! So next time you are in Bass Pro go to Customer service or the Gun counter and THANK them for all they do for Ararat Shrine. It is Companies like Bass Pro that makes our Temple great, so let them know it!

Don’t miss the Richmond Shrine Clubs 5th Annual Cajun Crab Low-Country Boil July 8, 2017 5:00 to 8:00PM - $25.00 per plate and a cash bar -at the Richmond Shrine Club in Rich-mond MO.

We do serve a GOOD MEAL!!What a GREAT CEREMONIAL we had! Good turnout, welcoming 16 new Nobles, and had

lots of fun. Mike Wheeler, and his Band of Men, put on a Great Show in the Ballroom. And the Arch Production was great as usual. They had a new person running the spotlight, and HE (me), did a good job of blinding a few people! The dinner afterword, put on by Mary’s crew, was great as well. Thanks to all who came and PARTICIPATED in welcoming all of our new Nobles.

Next month I am going to interview Linda at the front desk to find out some “Interesting Information” on Nobles, Divan, and anything that has happened in the many years Linda has been working at the Temple. You have heard the term “If these walls could talk” haven’t you?? Linda will be accepting “Payoffs” to keep quiet,if need be.

Honoring and Remembering Imperial Sir Jack Jones

IMPERIAL SIR JACK H. JONES worked tirelessly over the past 37 years to support and serve the fraternity at the national level. He served Shriners International as Imperial Recorder for 36 years, Executive Vice President for five, Imperial Potentate for one, and received countless accolades and honors, including the Imperial Potentate’s Award of

Merit, which is the highest honor in the fraternity. Jones was also known as one of the most dedicated and genuine people to work alongside – a reputation he has earned by leading the fraternity with grace and pride.

Imperial Sir Jack Jones was initially elected Imperial Recorder in 1979, and served in that position, or as Imperial Potentate, until his death.

During much of his time as Imperial Recorder, he also served as Director of Membership Development. Imperial Sir Jack Jones also served as Chairman of the Masonic Relations and DeMolay Committees during the majority of this time.

During his time as Imperial Potentate, Imperial Sir Jones focused on bringing people together, developing modern membership solutions and realizing and recognizing the fraternity’s global impact and its potential. Jones’ theme for the year was “Unity Wins.” Imperial Sir Jack Jones did not permit this confinement to a wheelchair to confine his spirit or his travels. He was a frequent speaker at Masonic events throughout the world and was a well-known and well-respected Masonic leader.

While serving Shriners International, Jones also met many high-profile figures, including the Queen of England and President Ronald Reagan, who he had the privilege of personally making an honorary member of the fraternity. While serving as Imperial Potentate, Jones also had the pleasure of meeting the world’s oldest man and 113-year-old Shriner, Walter Breuning.

“Imperial Sir Jack Jones has been a fixture on the boards of Shriners International and Shriners Hospitals for Chil-dren for decades,” said Imperial Potentate Chris Smith. “With the passing of Jack Jones, all Masons and all Shriners have experienced a great loss. He was a truly great Shriner, an example to all.”

Shriners Hospitals for Children Provides Hope and Healing Through Care, Research and EducationShriners Hospitals for Children® is a unique health care system with a reputation for finding answers, and giving families hope. At our 22 locations in the U.S., Canada and Mexico, children receive expert care for orthopaedic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries and cleft lip and palate, regardless of the families’ ability to pay for services. Since opening our first hospital in 1922, we have provided care to more than 1.3 million children, regardless of the families’ ability to pay.

A Tradition of Providing State-of-the-Art Specialty Care In the 1920s, the first Shriners Hospital was opened primarily to help children who had contracted polio. Today, the majority of our 22 Shriners Hospitals for Children provide care for children with all types of orthopaedic conditions, including clubfoot, hip disorders, limb deficiencies and deformities, scoliosis, and orthopaedic difficulties related to cerebral palsy and other neuromuscular conditions.

Aware of a need for medical expertise in pediatric burn care, we opened three hospitals specializing in acute and rehabilitative burn care in the mid-1960s. These are the only hospitals that were initially established exclusively for the treatment of pediatric burns and related conditions. A fourth hospital in our health care system offers treatment in all four of our care disciplines, including burns. These hospitals continue to be pioneers in pediatric burn treatment and research and are recognized as leaders in the development of improved and innovative treatment techniques.

In the early 1980s, our organization opened the nation’s first pediatric spinal cord injury rehabilitation centers. There, patients have access to a complete range of services needed to recover to the fullest extent possible.

Cleft lip and palate is the health care system’s fourth service line. Facial clefts are one of the most common birth defects in the U.S. Despite the frequency of its occurrence, and the severity of the deformities, comprehensive care for patients with cleft lip and palate can be difficult to obtain. Shriners Hospitals for Children is committed to improving care for children with this condition through a coordinated program of clinical excellence, teaching and research.

Groundbreaking Research and Discoveries Shriners Hospitals for Children strives to discover answers that will one day improve lives by conducting high-quality, innovative research,

especially in the areas of burns, orthopaedic/musculoskeletal and neurological injury and disease.

Over time, our researchers have made significant breakthroughs in all four of our service lines, improving the care and quality of life for countless children worldwide, while adding to the global body of medical knowledge.

Educating the Health Care Professionals of Tomorrow We are also proud of our role in medical education. By maintaining relationships with several medical teaching facilities, Shriners Hospitals for Children fosters an academic environment committed to providing superior education for medical professionals and expert care to all patients.

Eligibility Admission to our hospitals is based solely on medical need. All children, under the age of 18, are eligible for care if there is a reasonable possibility they could benefit from the specialized services available. All services are provided regardless of the ability to pay.

Be Part of Our Mission At all Shriners Hospitals for Children locations, our patients receive both expert treatment and support that encourages healthy, independent lives. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, our health care system relies on the generosity of donors to carry out this mission of improving the lives of children.
