ITALIAN ISLAND HOLIDAY

Sicily This largest Italian island is located south of the mainland in the Mediterranean Sea, surrounded by smaller islands including The Aeolians, Egadi and Pelagie Islands. Palermo, the island’s capital province, reaches out toward the Tyrrhenian Sea. While the terrain is predominantly mountainous, Palermo’s beaches offer distinct experiences. Mondello is an area where many locals will spend their time. Popular for watersports, visitors can enjoy kayaking and windsurfing, or simply lie lazily on the sand admiring the crystal-clear water and rising cliffs. Yellow beach umbrellas, denoting the public beach area, are available to rent. On Sicily’s northern coast sits the fishing village of Cefalù. Also a popular beach resort town, Cefalù offers one of the most prized beaches in Sicily. Ascend to the top of La Rocca, a massive mountain affording beautiful views of the city. Visit the ruins of Tempio di Diana, or the Temple of Diana, which date back to the 9th century B.C. Originally built in the 13th or 14th century, the ruins of Cefalù Castle sits atop La Rocca and is a fascinating destination for archaeology enthusiasts. Stop in to enjoy a meal at the quaint family-run La Brace Ristorante, which serves specialties such as homemade pastas, renowned pesto and decadent desserts including tiramisu and panna cotta.

Sardinia Sitting to the west of Italy, Sardinia welcomes visitors with pristine beaches covered in sand the color of snow, rich archaeological sites and plenty of festivals to celebrate a variety of significant religious, historical and cultural observances. Sardinia’s three international airports and dependable rail system allow visitors to easily navigate the area. Though a large portion of the island’s population lives centrally, there exist many small coastal villages that boast dreamlike Italian resorts, which have allowed Sardinia to grow into one of Europe’s most desired holiday destinations. On the northwest coast of Sardinia, the town of Alghero – known for its stunning beaches and its old town center – hosts the annual Cavalcata Sarda on the penultimate Sunday of every May. Commemorating the 1899 visit of King Umberto I and Queen Margherita, today’s folk festival is one of the island’s most popular celebrations. Throughout Italy, August 15 holds great importance

as the national holiday Ferragosto, or Assumption Day, yet the Sardinian town of Sassari takes its observation of this special day to new heights. In addition to music, food, parades, fireworks and enjoying the beaches, local Sassari men participate in the Festa dei Candelieri. During this race, men form teams of approximately 10 to carry massive, ornately decorated candles that are paraded throughout the town.

La Maddalena Off the northeast shore of Sardinia lies the charming town of La Maddalena, located on an island that shares its name. The island boasts cafes, warm hospitality and beautiful beaches, popular with scuba divers due to its relatively untouched condition. Reaching La Maddalena is enjoyable and easy, as ferries from Palau transport travelers in 20 minutes. Plenty of hotels on the Italian islands, such as Palermo’s Grand Hotel Villa Igiea - MGallery Collection, or the Carlos V Hotel in Alghero, offer the luxury of life at a slower pace while allowing guests to embrace the region’s culture. Perillo Tours and Tauck also offer intimate tour options for exploring the islands.

Many travelers to Italy seek the Holy City of Rome, the chic streets of Florence, Venice’s history or the romance of Tuscany. Though these Italian cities have much to offer, why not go island hopping to find Italian paradise surrounded by the sea?

FALL 2015

MYSTERIOUS AND EXOTIC SOUTHEAST ASIA

HAUTE HONG KONG

As one of Asia’s commerce centers, bustling Hong Kong remains one of the region’s most visited cities. The glittering metropolis often serves as the departure point for deeper exploration and is a popular cruise hub. Known for its exquisite shopping, luxury hotels and haute cuisine, Hong Kong attracts visitors from around the world.

The city and its harbor are best seen from the top of Victoria Peak. Reaching more than 1,640 feet above Hong Kong’s harbor, the site boasts panoramic views of the area, once the home of busy fishing villages, upon which this center of trade was built. As the highest mountain on Hong Kong Island, Victoria Peak once served as a summer retreat for Hong Kong’s early elite residents and only expatriates were permitted to reside here from 1904 until 1947. The scene is especially spectacular at night when brightly lit skyscrapers and the brilliant profusion of neon lights ignite the sky.

MALAYSIA’S RETAIL THERAPY

In Malaysia, travelers find an exotic country with quaint, landscaped villages, cosmopolitan cities, and

a diversity of customs and traditions. The peninsula, bordered by Thailand to the north, is home to residents of mainly Malay, Indian and Chinese heritage. With a population of more than 30 million, English, Mandarin, Cantonese and other languages are spoken throughout Malaysia, but Bahasa Malaysia is the official language.

The once famous mining town of Kuala Lumpur has grown to become an exciting metropolis in Southeast Asia. The diverse city is known around the globe for its shopping, boasting large centers and districts, such as Bukit Bintang (or Bintang Walk/Starhill) that sell designer brands, yet is also home to bazaars and markets, such as Petaling Street/Chinatown, Lorong Tuanku Abdul Rahman and Jalan

Masjid India that offer locally sourced goods and unique items.

Serious shoppers will plan their trip according to the Malaysia Mega Sale. Though this event is hosted throughout Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur has embraced its reputation as a shopper’s paradise. The local government advises visitors to keep in mind that many reputable vendors will display a badge, which reveals their business as one that treats tourists with honesty and fair pricing.

CELEBRATING SINGAPORE

Singapore, at the tip of the Malay Peninsula, is the gateway to all of Southeast Asia today, as Hong Kong was in the past. Now a modern city-state known throughout the world for its phenomenal cleanliness, efficiency and national pride, Singapore is one of the most visitor friendly destinations in Asia. Irresistible goods from the four corners of the world are available for retail explorers who include shopping as a priority during their travels.

Celebrating its 50th anniversary, Singapore has events planned through the end of 2015. Among Singapore’s exciting events, the Grand Prix Season Singapore will honor the anniversary with concerts,

Cruising through Asia affords a much different perspective than the experience offered via a land tour. After sailing through small villages set along riverbanks or seas bordering great Asian metropolises, travelers have the opportunity to engage with locals and experience regional culture.

dance parties and the thrilling Formula One race along the Marina Bay Street Circuit. Singapore’s event calendar also includes the Mid-Autumn Festival (don’t miss out on traditionally made mooncakes), Deepavali and ZoukOut – an enormous dance beach festival. Singapore’s calendar of events continues through the end of this anniversary year, but 2016 will be here soon, bringing with it the close of this milestone!

THAILAND’S TOURISM MIX

Thailand’s reputation as one of Asia’s most exotic destinations stems from its natural beauty, enhanced by lush jungles and fertile plains. The country’s distant culture offers a traditional and rich heritage. The city of Bangkok boasts a multitude of golden Buddhist temples (wats) and exquisite ancient city ruins.

Thailand’s 76 provinces fall within five regions and its capital, Bangkok, is located in the central area. Also known as Krung Thep, or “the city of angels,”

Bangkok boasts a bustling city atmosphere blended with traditional Buddhist temples. On Rattanakosin Island, visitors can find the Grand Palace, which dates back to 1782 when it was built for King Rama I during the Chakri Dynasty. This site is home to the Temple of Emerald Buddha. Phra Kaeo Morakot, or the Emerald Buddha, is a green jade carving that is considered sacred by the Thai people.

In the north, a visit to Chiang Mai, which means “new city” offers an array of activities. Founded in 1296, the city is home to pagodas, temples, delicious Thai cuisine and businesses that will teach ancient arts including workshops in silk and silver production. Surrounded by the lush natural beauty for which Thailand is known, Chiang Mai is known as a popular destination for hiking, rafting and interacting with elephants. The government warns against the ethics of many elephant camps, advising travelers to choose businesses that care for their animals. Elephant Nature Park boasts a large selection of tourism packages, allowing visitors to learn about caring for these fascinating creatures.

THE NEW VIETNAM

Vietnam’s recent surge in tourism has afforded new discoveries to Western tourists. Located on the Indochinese Peninsula, Vietnam is bordered by China, Laos, Cambodia, and the South China Sea. The tropical climate and varied topography yield limitless options for travelers to indulge in natural wonders and urban experiences.

One of the most visited cities is lively and dynamic Ho Chi Minh, which has become an important economic and cultural center of Vietnam. This city has numerous temples, pagodas and cathedrals. Outside this important Vietnamese hub is the Mekong Delta. Visitors find this region to capture the true essence of Vietnam, as field workers cultivate the land, and go about their daily lives on the rivers and arroyos.

Often compared to Hawaii, Mui Ne is Vietnam’s beach-bum motherland, located nearly 140 miles from Ho Chi Minh City. The town is a resort center known for providing respite to visitors seeking relaxation. While palm-tree-lined beaches surrounded by the blue sea are enticing, Mui Ne is also famous for its enormous sand dunes, which appear in hues of red, yellow and white and are perfect for sandboarding or sledding. Kiteboarding and windsurfing along the shoreline are also popular with tourists. Many competing rental businesses occupy the town; therefore negotiating pricing is an excellent idea.

Sailing through Southeast Asia affords the opportunity to experience the distinctive cultures of many cities in this once mysterious region. Silversea sails round trip from Singapore aboard the Silver Shadow. Princess offers itineraries that travel through Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam and Thailand. For a small-ship experience, Viking River Cruises provides an intimate cruise setting for journeys through Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand and Myanmar.

IN SEARCH OF THE ULTIMATE AMUSEMENT PARK

Charmed in Denmark Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, dates back to the 1100s. While historically and architecturally impressive, it is also a modern, fashionable city – and certainly one of the liveliest in all of Europe. When touring the city, it becomes clear what inspired Hans Christian Andersen to write his fairy tales. With its quaint cottages, tiny hamlets, castles and ancient forts, its sea-wrapped landscape lush and lovely, Copenhagen and its environs create a truly fabled land. So it should be of no surprise to find its amusements parks just as whimsical. Tivoli Gardens, founded in 1843, has become a national treasure and an international attraction. Visitors of all ages can appreciate the park’s intriguing architecture, sparkling fountains and lush gardens. At night, thousands of lights create a fairy-tale atmosphere that is entirely unique. While some of the park rides are wonderfully nostalgic, such as a wooden roller coaster that dates back to 1914, others have been engineered for true thrill-seekers, including the Vertigo, which will turn you upside down at 100 kilometers per hour. Just north of Copenhagen, in the lush woodlands of Jaegersborg Dyrehave, you will find 431-year-old Bakken – the world’s oldest amusement park. With 33 roller coasters, Ferris wheels, drop towers, and many more exciting and extreme adventures, Bakken offers more rides than any other amusement park in Scandinavia.

Mickey and Minnie Go to Shanghai The wonderful world of Disney is getting bigger, yet again. If you happen to be in Shanghai, China in spring 2016, you might be fortunate enough to receive the first greetings from China’s version of Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck and the rest of the Disney gang. This is when Shanghai Disneyland is expected to open. Shanghai Disneyland will be a new variation of the traditional Disneyland-style theme parks found in Hong Kong, Tokyo, Paris, Orlando and Los Angeles. The park will open with six themed lands – Mickey Avenue, Gardens of Imagination, Fantasyland, Adventure Isle, Treasure Cove and Tomorrowland. But you can expect to find some new additions, including a Buzz Lightyear attraction in Tomorrowland, and a new version of the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train and the Voyage to the Crystal Grotto ride in Fantasyland. Disney’s iconic castle will be bigger than the ones in all of its other theme parks and the first to include all of the brand’s beloved princesses. In Disneytown there will be shopping, dining, and an entertainment district. Maybe you would even like to stay on the Disney property. Shanghai’s version will have a classic 420-room Shanghai Disneyland Hotel as well as an 800-room Toy Story Hotel.

Dubai: Amusement Oasis Dubai, United Arab Emirates is to the Middle East what Hong Kong is to Asia: a capitalist jewel buzzing with activity. Tourism is a high priority in Dubai, so naturally this is home to many world-class amusement parks. Waterparks are especially popular in this tropical desert oasis. One of the largest is Wild Wadi, which offers 30 rides and attractions themed around the tale of Juha, a character known from Arabian folklore. Thrill-seekers will want to check out adrenaline-fueled rides such as Tantrum Alley and Burj Surj.

If you’re up for an ultimate surfing experience, head to Wipeout and Riptide Flowrider – one of only four such rides in the world. Conversely, if you would rather hit the slopes, you’ll find the indoor ski resort Ski Dubai to be a great place to ski, snowboard and toboggan. Ski Dubai has five runs that vary in difficulty, height and steepness. Ski clothing and equipment are provided. Several new amusement parks are still in the works in Dubai, including Dubailand, possibly the most ambitious tourist destination ever created. Upon completion, which is expected

to be in 2020, Dubailand will be twice the size of Walt Disney World Resort in Florida, making it the biggest theme/amusement park in the world.

Throughout the world, amusement parks have entertained pleasure seekers for hundreds of years. Before the mid-20th century, these parks presented a gentle spin on guest-pleasing attractions. Today, many park-goers simply seek the “wow” factor of fast moving, twisting and turning, heart-pounding rides. American thrill-seekers are quite familiar with the parks that keep pace with their guests’ quest for the adrenaline rush. Yet, beyond the U.S. borders, there are many amusement parks that are well worth exploring – and this is where the fun really begins.

IN SEARCH OF THE ULTIMATE AMUSEMENT PARK HEADING TO HAVANABy Dorothy Crouch

Many airlines, such as JetBlue, have launched flights to Cuba or are planning

to begin operating trips to the archipelago nation within the next year. Cruise lines including Carnival have announced that they too will begin traveling to this land that is welcoming tourists with ropa vieja (a regional dish comprising stewed beef and vegetables), rhumba, hand-rolled cigars and friendly locals. Havana Vieja, or Old Havana, is the capital city’s cornerstone and boasts the expertly preserved colonial buildings, for which Cuba is known. Walk along Malecon from the old town, admiring the city’s north shore along the Straits of Florida. In 1982, the area was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site for its history-rich center and fortifications system. In Havana, there is an abundance of landmarks for easy immersion into the history of this city that once seemed frozen in time. Fortresses, such as Castillo del Morro and La Cabaña, reveal glimpses into the stories of English pirate Sir Francis Drake and 18th-century Spanish colonists.

History enthusiasts who are fascinated by the revolution must visit the Museum of the Revolution, a building that was completed in 1920 and formerly served as the Presidential Palace prior to the 1959 revolution. During Cuba’s post-revolution era, citizens would crowd Plaza de la Revolucion, the city’s largest square, to hear former president Fidel Castro speak. Though many visitors to Cuba opt to spend their trip lodging with a family in a homestay, also known as casas particulares, there are five-star hotel and resort properties offering all the luxurious amenities tourists could desire. Dating back to 1930, Hotel Nacional has

become a Cuban landmark, its ornate façade captured in visitors’ photos and tourism promotions. It is centrally located in the Havana neighborhood of Vedado. A five-star property, the Hotel National boasts intricately detailed, expertly preserved Art Deco design. Of its 457 guest rooms, many have been named for legendary celebrities and heads-of-state, such as Nat King Cole, Ava Gardner Y Frank Sinatra, Fred Astaire, Rita Hayworth, Jean Paul Sarte, Tennessee Williams and Walt Disney, who occupied the quarters during the country’s former days of glamour.

The fervor has turned up even a notch higher in South Beach, Miami, attracting visitors the world over – and plenty of celebrities too – with trendy new hotels, restaurants boasting world-renowned chefs, chic boutiques, art galleries, and entertainment hotspots. At velvet-roped nightclubs where everyone wants to be and be seen, the action is nonstop until dawn. Just two streets off the beach, Washington Avenue is packed with some of the world’s largest and most popular nightclubs. If shopping is your quest, head to Lincoln Road, considered South Beach’s premier shopping area. This open-air pedestrian mall is lined with boutiques, retail outlets, sidewalk cafés and bars. The area is also a cultural center, with a state-of-the-art multiplex cinema, a concert hall for the New World Symphony Orchestra, the Art Center South Florida, and the newly restored Colony Theater performing arts center. Maybe the glitz and glam lifestyle isn’t for you. A drive

southward to the Florida Keys might be just what you were looking for in a Florida vacation. Laid-back, free-spirited Key West, the southernmost city in the continental United States, takes a very different approach to fun in the form of lively street festivals and a boisterous Old Town club scene. You might even find yourself singing along loudly to Jimmy Buffet songs. The subtropical climate of Key West nourishes lush vegetation, especially palm trees, hibiscus and bougainvillea – an environment that has captured the hearts of numerous famous writers and artists who have

made Key West their home. For visitors, one of the highlights of the trip to Key West is a Dry Tortugas National Park Ferry excursion to Fort Jefferson for a half day of swimming, snorkeling, and touring the fort. And you can’t leave town without taking the Conch Tour Train for a 14-mile journey through old and new Key West that passes many local landmarks, including the Key West Lighthouse Museum, Duval Street, the Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum, and the Southernmost Point.
