Seasonal Sentence I am the way, the truth, and the life, says the Lord; no one comes to the Father, but by me. John 14.6 The Gathering of The Community (Page 230) Celebrant: Alleluia! Christ is Risen. All: The Lord is Risen indeed. Alleluia!

Celebrant: May his grace and peace be with you. All: May he fill our hearts with joy.

Celebrant: Let us pray. All: Almighty God, unto whom all hearts be open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of thy Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love thee, and worthily magnify thy holy name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Summary of the Law Celebrant: Our Lord Jesus Christ said: hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is one Lord; and thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it: thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. All: Lord, have mercy upon us, and write both these thy laws in our hearts, we beseech thee.

Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us.

The Gloria All: Glory be to God on high, and in earth peace, good will towards men. We praise thee, we bless thee, we worship thee, we glorify thee, we give thanks to thee for thy great glory, O Lord God, heavenly king, God the Father almighty.

O Lord, the only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ; O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, that takest away the sin of the world, have mercy upon us. Thou that takest away the sin of the world, receive our prayer.

Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father, have mercy upon us. For thou only art holy; thou only art the Lord; thou only, O Christ, with the Holy Ghost, art most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

The Collect (Page 340) Celebrant: Let us pray. Almighty God, your Son Jesus Christ is the way, the truth, and the life. Give us grace to love one another and walk in the way of his commandments, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. All: Amen. The First Reading: Acts 7:55-60 Filled with the Holy Spirit, Stephen gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. "Look," he said, "I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!" But they covered their ears, and with a loud shout all rushed together against him. Then they dragged him out of the city and began to stone him; and the witnesses laid their coats at the feet of a young man named Saul. While they were stoning Stephen, he prayed, "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit." Then he knelt down and cried out in a loud voice, "Lord, do not hold this sin against them." When he had said this, he died. Reader: The Word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God.

PSALM 31:1-5, 15-16 (Page 740)

1 In you, O Lord, have I taken refuge; let me never be put to shame; * deliver me in your righteousness.

2 Incline your ear to me; * make haste to deliver me. 3 Be my strong rock, a castle to keep me safe, for you are my crag and my

stronghold; *for the sake of your name, lead me and guide me. 4 Take me out of the net that they have secretly set for me, *for you are my

tower of strength. 5 Into your hands I commend my spirit, *for you have redeemed me, O Lord, O

God of truth. 15 My times are in your hand; rescue me from the hand of my enemies, and from

those who persecute me. 16 Make your face to shine upon your servant, *and in your loving-kindness save

me.”.

Helper of the helpless, comfort of the afflicted, may your servants who stand in the midst of evil find strength in the knowledge of your presence, and praise you for the wonders of your love; through Jesus Christ our Redeemer. Amen.

The Second Reading: 1 Peter 2:2-10 Like newborn infants, long for the pure, spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow into salvation if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good. Come to him, a living stone, though rejected by mortals yet chosen and precious in God's sight, and like living stones, let yourselves be built into a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For it stands in scripture: "See, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious; and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame." To you then who believe, he is precious; but for those who do not believe, "The stone that the builders rejected has become the very head of the corner," and "A stone that makes them stumble, and a rock that makes them fall." They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do. But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's own people, in order that you may proclaim the mighty acts of him who called you out of darkness into his marvellous light. Once you were not a people, but now you are God's people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. Reader: The Word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God. The Gospel Reader: The Lord be with you. All: And with thy spirit.

Reader: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John (14:1-14) All: Glory be to thee, O Lord. Jesus said, "Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father's house there are many dwelling places. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, so that where I am, there you may be also. And you know the way to the place where I am going." Thomas said to him, "Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?" Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you know me, you will know my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him." Philip said to him, "Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied." Jesus said to him, "Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and you still do not know me? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, 'Show us the Father'? Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own; but the Father who dwells in

me does his works. Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; but if you do not, then believe me because of the works themselves. Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because I am going to the Father. I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If in my name you ask me for anything, I will do it." Reader: The Gospel of Christ. All: Praise be to thee, O Christ. Homily The Nicene Creed (Page 234) All: I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible;

And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all worlds, God, of God; Light, of Light; very God, of very God; begotten, not made; being of one substance with the Father; through whom all things were made: who for us and for our salvation came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Ghost of the Virgin Mary, and was made man, and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried, and the third day he rose again according to the scriptures, and ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of the Father. And he shall come again with glory to judge both the quick and the dead: whose kingdom shall have no end.

And I believe in the Holy Ghost, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceedeth from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified, who spake by the prophets.

And I believe one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. I acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins. And I look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. The Confession & Absolution (Page 238) Celebrant: Hear what comfortable words our Saviour Christ saith unto all that truly turn to him.

Come unto me all that labour and are heavy laden, and I will refresh you. Matthew 1.28

God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, to the end that all that believe in him should not perish, but have eternal life. John 3.16

Hear also what Saint Paul saith. This is a true saying, and worthy of all to be received, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. 1 Timothy 1.15

Hear also what Saint John saith. If anyone sin, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; and he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world. 1 John 2.1,2

Let us humbly confess our sins to almighty God.

All: Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Maker of all things and judge of all people: we acknowledge and confess our manifold sins and wickedness, which we from time to time most grievously have committed, by thought, word and deed, against thy divine majesty. We do earnestly repent, and are heartily sorry for these our misdoings. Have mercy upon us, most merciful Father; for thy Son our Lord Jesus Christ’s sake, forgive us all that is past; and grant that we may ever hereafter serve and please thee in newness of life, to the honour and glory of thy name; Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Celebrant: Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who of his great mercy hath promised forgiveness of sins to all them that with hearty repentance and true

faith turn unto him: have mercy upon you; pardon and deliver you from all your sins; confirm and strengthen you in all goodness; and bring you to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. All: Amen.

The Peace Celebrant: The Peace of the Lord be always with you. All: And with thy spirit.

Please greet one another with a sign of peace.

Offertory (Thou Art The Way)

Prayer over The Gifts (Page 341) Celebrant: Let us pray. Gracious God, you show us your way and give us your divine life. May everything we do be directed by the knowledge of your truth. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ the risen Lord. All: Amen.

Eucharistic Prayer B (Page 243) Celebrant: The Lord be with you. People: And with thy spirit.

Celebrant: Lift up your hearts. People: We lift them up unto the Lord.

Celebrant: Let us give thanks unto our Lord God. People: It is meet and right so to do.

It is very meet, right, and our bounden duty, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto thee, O Lord, holy Father, almighty, everlasting God, creator and preserver of all things.

But chiefly are we bound to praise thee for the glorious resurrection of thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord; for he is the very Paschal Lamb, which was offered for us, and hath taken away the sin of the world; who by his death hath destroyed death, and by his rising to life again hath restored to us everlasting life.

Therefore with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify thy glorious name; evermore praising thee and saying: All: Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of Hosts, heaven and earth are full of thy glory. Glory be to thee, O Lord most high. Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord: Hosanna in the highest.

Please kneel or sit as you are able.

Celebrant: All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption.

He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again;

who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to His disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”

Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my Blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you, and for many, for the remission of sins. Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.”

Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

And we most humbly beseech thee, O merciful Father, to hear us, and, with thy Word and Holy Spirit, to bless and sanctify these gifts of bread and wine, that they may be unto us the body and blood of thy dearly-beloved Son Jesus Christ. All: We praise thee, we bless thee, we thank thee, and we pray to thee, Lord our God.

And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this holy communion may worthily receive the most precious body and blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord; By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer Celebrant: And now, as our Saviour Christ hath taught us, we are bold to say, People: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom

Page 10: Holy Trinity Church, Thornhill...THE FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER May 14, 2017 Holy Trinity Church, Thornhill Established in 1830 140 rooke Street, Thornhill, ON L4J 1Y9 Phone: 905 889 5931

come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Breaking of the Bread Celebrant: Alleluia! Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; People: Therefore, let us keep the feast. Alleluia!

O Lamb of God, that takest away the sin of the world: have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sin of the world: have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sin of the world: grant us thy peace. Celebrant: The Gifts of God for the People of God. All: Thanks be to God.

Communion Interlude (How Sweet The Name of Jesus Sounds)

Prayer after Communion (Page 248) Celebrant: Let us pray, All: We most heartily thank thee, almighty and everliving God, that thou dost graciously feed us, in these holy mysteries, with the spiritual food of the most precious body and blood Of thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ; assuring us thereby of thy favour and goodness towards us; and that we are living members of his mystical Body, which is the blessed company of all faithful people; and are also heirs through hope of thy everlasting kingdom. And we humbly beseech thee, O heavenly Father, so to assist us with thy grace, that we may continue in that holy fellowship, and do all such good works as thou hast prepared for us to walk in; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with thee and the Holy Spirit, be all honour and glory, world without end. Amen. The Blessing

Preparation Please use this time to listen to the musical offering

Seasonal Sentence I am the way, the truth, and the life, says the Lord; no one comes to the Father, but by me. John 14.6

Hymn 459 Christ Is Our Cornerstone (Tune: 365) Christ is our cornerstone, on him alone we build;

With his true saints alone the courts of heaven are filled.

On his great love our hopes we place of present grace and joys above.

O then with hymns of praise these hallowed courts shall ring.

Our voices we will raise the Three in One to sing, And thus proclaim in joyful song both loud and long that glorious Name.

Here, gracious Lord, do thou for evermore draw nigh;

Accept each faithful vow, and mark each suppliant sigh.

In copious shower on all who pray, each holy day thy blessings pour.

Here may we gain from heaven the grace which we implore;

And may that grace, once given, be with us evermore, Until that day when all the blest to endless rest are called away.

Welcome

Minister: Thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Psalm 51. 17.

Dearly beloved brethren, the Scripture moveth us in sundry places to acknowledge and confess our manifold sins and wickedness; and that we should not dissemble nor cloke them before the face of Almighty God our heavenly Father; but confess them with an humble, lowly, penitent, and obedient heart; to the end that we may obtain forgiveness of the same, by his infinite goodness and mercy. And although we ought at all times humbly to acknowledge our sins before God; yet ought we most chiefly so to do, when we assemble and meet together to render thanks for the great benefits that we have received at his hands, to set forth his most worthy praise, to hear his most holy Word, and to ask those things which are requisite and necessary, as well for the body as the soul. Wherefore I pray and beseech you, as many as are here present, to accompany me with a pure heart and humble voice unto the throne of the heavenly grace.

10:00 a.m. - MORNING PRAYER & SERMON

People: Almighty and most merciful Father, We have erred and strayed from thy ways like lost sheep, We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts, We have offended against thy holy laws, We have left undone those things which we ought to have one, And we have done those things which we ought not to have done; And there is no health in us. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us, miserable offenders. Spare thou them, O God, which confess their faults. Restore thou them that are penitent; According to thy promises declared unto mankind in Christ Jesu our Lord. And grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake, That we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life, to the glory of thy holy Name. Amen.

Priest: God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who desireth not the death of a sinner, but rather that he may turn from his wickedness, and live, hath given power and commandment to his Ministers, to declare and pronounce to his people, being penitent, the Absolution and Remission of their sins. He pardoneth and absolveth all them that truly repent and unfeignedly believe his holy Gospel. Wherefore we beseech him to grant us true repentance and his Holy Spirit, that those things may please him which we do at this present, and that the rest of our life hereafter may be pure and holy; so that at the last we may come to his eternal joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord. People: Amen. Minister: O Lord, open thou our lips; People: And our mouth shall show forth thy praise.

Minister: O God, make speed to save us; People: O Lord, make haste to help us.

Minister: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; People: As it was in the beginning, is no, and ever shall be, world without end.

Amen.

Minister: Praise ye the Lord; People: The Lord’s Name be praised. Venite, Exultemus Domino (Psalm 95, Page 6) O come, let us sing unto the Lord: let us heartily rejoice in the strength of our

salvation. Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving, and show ourselves glad in

him with psalms. For the Lord is a great God, / and a great King above all gods.

In his hand are all the corners of the earth: and the strength of the hills is his also.

The sea is his, and he made it: and his hands prepared the dry land. O come, let us worship, and fall down, and kneel before the Lord our Maker. For he is the Lord our God; and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep

of his hand.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

PSALM 31:1-5, 15-16 (Page 364) 1 In thee, O LORD, have I put my trust; / let me never be put to confusion; deliver

me in thy righteousness. 2 Bow down thine ear to me; / make haste to deliver me, 3 And be thou my strong rock and house of defence, / that thou mayest save me. 4 For thou art my strong rock and my castle: / be thou also my guide, and lead me

for thy Name’s sake. 5 Draw me out of the net that they have hidden for me; / for thou art my

strength. 15 I am clean forgotten, as a dead man out of mind; / I am become like a broken

vessel. 16 For I have heard the whispering of the multitude, and fear is on every side; /

while they conspire together against me, and plot to take away my life.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Te Deum (Parts 1 & 2, page 7) We praise thee, O God; we acknowledge thee to be the Lord. All earth doth worship thee, the Father everlasting. To thee all Angels cry aloud, the Heavens and all the Powers therein. To thee Cherubim and Seraphim continually do cry, Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of hosts; Heaven and earth are full of the Majesty of thy glory. The glorious company of the Apostles praise thee; The goodly fellowship of the Prophets praise thee; The noble army of Martyrs praise thee; The holy Church throughout all the world doth acknowledge thee, The Father, of an infinite Majesty; Thine honourable, true, and only Son; Also the Holy Ghost, the Comforter.

Thou art the King of Glory, O Christ. Thou art the everlasting Son of the Father. When thou tookest upon thee to deliver man, thou didst not abhor the Virgin’s

womb. When thou hadst overcome the sharpness of death, thou didst open the

kingdom of heaven to all believers. Thou sittest at the right hand of God, in the glory of the Father. We believe that thou shalt come to be our Judge. We therefore pray thee, help thy servants, whom thou hast redeemed with thy

precious blood. Make them to be numbered with thy Saints, in glory everlasting.

The Second Reading: John 14:1-14 Jesus said, "Do not let your hearts be troubled.

The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own; but the Father who dwells in me does his works. Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; but if you do not, then believe me because of the works themselves. Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because I am going to the Father. I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If in my name you ask me for anything, I will do it." Reader: Here ends the reading. The Benedictus (St Luke 1. 68, page 9) Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; for he hath visited, and redeemed his people; And hath raised up a mighty salvation for us, in the house of his servant David; As he spake by the mouth of his holy Prophets, which have been since the world

began; That we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hands of all that hate

us; To perform the mercy promised to our forefathers, and to remember his holy

covenant; To perform the oath which he sware to our forefather Abraham, that he would

grant us That we being delivered out of the hands of our enemies might serve him

without fear, In holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life. And thou, child, shalt be called the Prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go

before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways; To give knowledge of salvation unto his people for the remission of their sins; Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the day-spring from on high

hath visited us; To give light to them that sit in darkness, and in the shadow of death, and to

guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

The Collect of the Day (Page 194) O Almighty God, God, who alone canst order the unruly wills and affections of sinful men: Grant unto thy people, that they may love the thing which thou commandest, and desire that which thou dost promise; that so, among the sundry and manifold changes of the world, our hearts may surely there be fixed, where true joys are to be found; through Jesus Christ our Lord. People: Amen.

The Collect for Peace O God, who art the author of peace and lover of concord, in knowledge of whom standeth our eternal life, whose service is perfect freedom: Defend us thy humble servants in all assaults of our enemies; that we, surely trusting in thy defence, may not fear the power of any adversaries; through the might of Jesus Christ our Lord. People: Amen

The Collect for Grace O Lord our heavenly Father, Almighty and everlasting God, who hast safely brought us to the beginning of this day: Defend us in the same with thy mighty power; and grant that this day we fall into no sin, neither run into any kind of danger; but that all our doings may be ordered by thy governance, to do always that is righteous in thy sight; through Jesus Christ our Lord. People: Amen. Anthem “My Jesus, I Love Thee”, J. Reese Hymn 515 Thou Art The Way: to Thee Alone

Thou art the way; to thee alone from sin and death we flee; And those who would the Father seek must seek him, Lord, by thee.

Thou art the truth; thy word alone true wisdom can impart; Thou only canst inform the mind, and purify the heart.

Thou art the life; the rending tomb proclaims thy conquering arm; And those who put their trust in thee nor death nor hell shall harm.

Thou art the way, the truth, the life; grant us that way to know, That truth to keep, that life to win, whose joys eternal flow.

Homily

Offertory Hymn 620 How Sweet the Name of Jesus Sounds How sweet the name of Jesus sounds in a believer’s ear! It soothes our sorrows, heals our wounds, and drives away our fear.

It makes the wounded spirit whole, and calms the troubled breast; ’Tis manna to the hungry soul, and to the weary rest.

Dear name! The rock on which I build, my shield and hiding place, My never failing treasury, filled with boundless stores of grace!

Jesus! my shepherd, brother, friend, my prophet, priest and king, My Lord, my life, my way, my end, accept the praise I bring.

Weak is the effort of my heart, and cold my warmest thought; But when I see Thee as Thou art, I’ll praise Thee as I ought.

Priest: Eternal God, you are the way, the truth and the life, receive all we offer you this day, this money and ourselves; lead us along the way that leads to truth and life. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ the Lord. People: Amen.

The Lord is never far away, but, through all grief distressing, An ever present help and stay, our peace and joy and blessing. As with a mother’s tender hand, God gently leads the chosen band: To God all praise and glory!

Thus, all my gladsome way along, I sing aloud your praises, That all may hear the grateful song my voice unwearied raises. Be joyful in the Lord, my heart; both soul and body bear your part: To God all praise and glory!

Let all who name Christ’s holy name give God all praise and glory; Let all who own His power proclaim a loud the wondrous story! Cast each false idol from its throne, for Christ is Lord and Christ alone: To God all praise and glory!

Minister: This act of worship is ended! Our service in the world continues! Let us go in peace, to love and serve the Lord. Alleluia! All: Thanks be to God. Alleluia! Alleluia!
