ards month and the 2008 campaign “Honoring the Past,

Building for the Present and the Future” has begun. Our parish went above our 2007 goal ($2200) contribut-ing $2,370 having 19 members. Also, our parish over the

past four years has increased its contri-butions each year. For those who in-creased their donation, THANK YOU!! If you were a contributor to ONE Stewards in the past or are a cur-rent “steward” the time has come to step forward and be counted. Our con-

tributions to ONE Stewards goes to support charities, seminarian scholarships, mission support and the dioce-san Youth Rally. Please respond to the ONE Stewards mailing when it arrives at your home. You can see our parishes “Honor Roll” posted on the bulletin board with other One Steward material.

CLOCKS CHANGE: Early on Sunday

morning March 9th our country moves clocks ahead one hour to resume Daylight Saving Time. On March 15th, we will move back to our summer schedule for Vespers, with services beginning on Saturday at 5:00 P.M.

mally held on the last Saturday of each month (except for lenten periods), following Great Vespers. All regular communicants should make every effort to attend each General Confession. The next General Confession will be held after Pascha in May.

attend more services, to fast, to give alms and to make the journey to the Sacrament of Confession during Great Lent. Fasting for the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts is nothing by mouth (food, drink, smoking, etc.) at least from the noontime meal until after Communion. Those who are physically able to are encouraged to fast the whole day.

noons [all begin at 4:00 p.m.] during the fast Lenten Ves-pers will be served at various churches through out the Connecticut Deanery. CHURCH RENOVATION UPDATE: A systematic plan has been developed to address the problems in the following manner:

♦ Replace ceiling tiles downstairs [winter ‘07 - ‘08] ♦ Repair and re-plaster the interior church walls

[summer - fall ‘09] ♦ Paint the interior of the church. ♦ Paint the downstairs [winter ‘08] ♦ Complete the downstairs area with new indoor/

outdoor carpet, with tile to cover the area of the cof-fee hour set-up [winter ‘08 - ‘09]

As you review the points listed above, one can see that the additional expenses are yet to be determined. But it is important to re-member that our church building is ap-proaching the 100 year mark in 2013, not to be confused with the 100th anniversary of the parish in 2002. Many have contributed to the Hundred Plus Club to honor the hundred plus years since our founding. Individuals may join by making donations to the building fund in denominations of $100. This will be in addition to one's annual pledge. The funds will be used solely for the purpose of reno-vating our church building.

During 2007 we collected $ 6000.00.

Forgiveness Sunday

In the Orthodox Church, the last Sunday before Great Lent – the day on which, at Vespers, Lent is liturgically announced and inaugurated – is called Forgiveness Sun-day. On the morning of that Sunday, at the Divine Lit-urgy, we hear the words of Christ:

"If you forgive men their trespasses, your

heavenly Father will also forgive you, but

if you forgive not men their trespasses,

neither will your Father forgive your

trespasses..." (Mark 6:14-15)

Then after Vespers – after hearing the announcement

of Lent in the Great Prokeimenon: "Turn not away Thy face from Thy child for I am afflicted! Hear me speedily! Draw near unto my soul and deliver it!", after making our entrance into Lenten worship, with its special memories, with the prayer of St. Ephraim the Syrian, with its prostra-tions – we ask forgiveness from each other, we perform the rite of forgiveness and reconciliation. And as we ap-proach each other with words of reconciliation, the choir intones the Paschal hymns, filling the church with the anticipation of Paschal joy. What is the meaning of this rite? Why is it that the Church wants us to begin Lenten season with forgiveness and reconciliation? These questions are in order because for too many people Lent means primarily, and almost exclusively, a change of diet, the compliance with ecclesi-astical regulations concerning fasting. They understand fasting as an end in itself, as a "good deed" required by God and carrying in itself its merit and its reward. But, the Church spares no effort in revealing to us that fasting is but a means, one among many, towards a higher goal: the spiritual renewal of man, his return to God, true re-pentance and, therefore, true reconciliation.

Father Alexander Schmemann

Introduction to the DRE/OCA 1975-1982 Forgiveness Sunday Vespers.

Draft Minutes: Annual Parish Meeting January 27, 2008

The Annual Parish Meeting of the Holy Trinity Orthodox Church was held on Sunday, January 27, 2008. Meeting Call to Order and Opening Prayer Warden Paul Salina called the meeting to order at 11:10 a.m. in the church and Fr. David opened the meeting with the singing of “O Heavenly King”. There were 38 parish-ioners in attendance and a quorum was declared. Paul welcomed everyone and opened the meeting. All written reports were distributed.

Secretary’s Report Minutes of the annual meeting dated January 28, 2007 were reviewed. Motion to accept the minutes as submitted by Marion Bichun/Nelson Potter. Motion carried.

Pastor’s Report (A copy of the report is on file with the secretary.) Father David reported the metrical statistics. He then thanked everyone for their service to the parish. Fr. David thanked Paul Salina and the parish council, along with Ellen Santoro and Jillian Wanik - our

prosphora bakers (if anyone else is interested in baking bread-see Father), also thanks to Nelson and Arlene Pot-ter and Diane Dounouk for re-organizing the bookstore, our secretary Phyllis Bartos for organizing coffee hour, Rosemary Delaney for organizing Pot Luck Suppers after Vesperal Liturgies, to all the work crews-inside and out. Thank you to the choir and the choir directors Juliana Koles and Jason Ferrandino, also to Annette Salina, Matushka Elizabeth Dresko and Chris Dresko who assist when needed. Our services have basically remained the same but Father keeps asking questions as it is discouraging to see a “precious few” attending services other than Sunday mornings. The church school age parents have met and will begin gathering pre-school materials and then begin church school before Liturgy on Sunday morning. We have 11 children under age 7. We also have a large group of seniors and super-seniors (over age 90) in our parish. Father visits them regularly. We also have an adult discussion that begins with a Pot-Luck Supper. Other parishes regularly schedule guest lec-turers and perhaps we could join them. Stewardship was behind 17% in 2007. Beginning with the February 2008 newsletter, Father will be running articles about stewardship. As for time and talent - we seem to get enough people from a limited pot but we all need to take turns to prevent “burn-out”. As comedian George Carlin says “you’ve got to wana”. We are one of the senior par-ishes in the United States. The future is not a gloomy one. We just need to be faithful and patient and we will begin to grow again and our parish will be blessed. When Father David visits the shut-ins he will inquire if the would come to church if they could get a ride. It has been a joy to have Father John Dresko and Matu-shka Elizabeth and their family continue to be part of the HTOC family.

Warden’s Remarks Warden Paul Salina thanked Father David and Matushka Melanie for their service to our par-ish. We are also fortunate to have the continued presence of Father John and Matushka Elizabeth in our parish. Paul also thanked to our choir directors Juliana Koles and Ja-son Ferrandino who co-share the duties and for Matushka Elizabeth, Chris Dresko and Annette Salina who assist when needed. He also thanked the parish council and the church organizations for their many contributions. Also thanks to everyone who assists in visible and invisible ways. Thank you to the 3 parish council members who must step down as their terms end - Rosemary Delaney, Barbara Burrell and Nancy Martin. Paul was happy to report that many projects that were initiated under previ-ous wardens were completed. He also made comments about church attendance diminishing and the parish council minutes from 20 years ago probably ad-

dressed the same issues-we just need to keep a cautious eye to our attendance and financial support.

Choir Director’s Report Father David reported that Juliana Koles and Jason Ferrandino are taking turns di-recting and it is working well, neither of them is being stressed-out. Financial Report Copies of the financial reports are on file with the secretary. George Ludko highlighted por-tions of the income and expenditure items. George re-ported that many major projects were completed. 2007 income $252,587.36 expense $284,869.99 exp/inc ($32,282.63) George reported that Misc. income included the insurance reimbursement for the Beaver St. house repairs and mon-ies that were transferred around to pay capitol projects that were previously approved. The large expenses under property maintenance included the Beaver St. house re-pairs and projects that were completed. In 2007 only the back apartment was rented. Total assets as of 12-31-07 $294,517.77. Motion to accept the 2007 financial report as submitted Paul Culton/Ellen Santoro. Motion carried. Cemetery/Perpetual Care Fund Report Nadine Cabrera reported $5,000.00 has been withdrawn to re-plenish the checking account. Copies of the reports are on file with the secretary. Total cemetery funds as of: 1-1-07 $52,806.93 12-31-07 $53,916.63 Endowment Fund Report Nadine Cabrera reported they will be looking at the Columbia Funds account at the next financial meeting, Columbia Funds: 1-1-07 $135,278.23 12-31-07 $138,745.18

Stock Accounts 12-31-07 $ 63,460.32 Nadine reported that at the 2007 annual meeting it was voted on with the approval of Dan and Beth Bradanini to sell the Abbot stock donated by Mary Cherpak for repairs and maintenance of the church. We now have only the Stanley Stock. Total Endowment Funds as of 12-31-07 $202,205.50 Warden Paul Salina thanked Nadine for her works and reminded us that the stock market can be up and down and we do need to keep a conservative eye. A motion to accept the cemetery and endowment reports as submitted by Diane Dounouk /Mike Wanik. Motion carried.

Cemetery Committee Warden Paul Salina reported that George Matyczyk is the cemetery trustee chairperson.

The committee also consists of Father David, Warden Paul Salina, and Paul Culton. The committee has been looking at our pricing compared to other cemeteries in the area and will be revising ours. Parishioners will be noti-fied in advance of any price-changes.

Organizations-Sisterhood Ellen Santoro thanked all the members for their hard work. In 2007, we had a meat-fare brunch, a brunch in conjunction with Bishop Nikon’s visit, a bake sale, gift bags for the shut-ins at Christmas, a scholarship donation, and vestments purchased for Father that are being made at this time in Russia. Thank you to the Potter’s for putting the gift bags together. Ellen thanked everyone for their support. We will be having a new activity in 2008 called Right, Left and Center - game night. Beginning Balance 1-1-07 $6,807.31 Expenses $3,036.65 Income $1,965.89 Exp/Inc ($1,070.66) Ending Balance 12-31-07 $5736.65 (sisterhood funds $3517.53 and pierogi funds $2219.12) Warden Paul Salina also thanked Ellen and the sister-hood.

Organizations-Men’s Club Presented by Paul Culton Beginning Balance $16,172.03 Income $ 3,291.96 Expense $ 5,828.75 Exp/Inc ($ 2,536.79) Expenses included their annual dinner, repair of both en-try ways to church hall, rock cat tickets, Mother’s Day flowers, scholarship, youth rally, golf outing, OCA stock-ing project, and bank service charges. The Men’s Club income is generated from the “lotto”. If you would like to support the Men’s Club there are still numbers available. Paul Culton encouraged others to support the OCA Stock-ing Project. OLD BUSINESS *Major Capitol Projects - **Church Building/Roof/Cupolas/Gutters/Tree Re-moval/Church Interior/Church School Interior * * War-den Paul Salina thanked Dan Bradanini for coordinating the roof project. Also, thanks to Mike and Dave Wanik who scraped peeling paint and to Ed Bichun and George Matyczyk who painted areas of walls in the church. The 100+ club was a great idea by Mike Wanik and others were encouraged to join in. All were reminded this is an above and beyond donation, and these donations could be renewed annually. This fund generated $6,000 in 2007 and monies will be used for the beautification of the church working towards the 100th anniversary of our church building in 2013. (100+ was not noted on the

Page 8: HOLY TRINITY ORTHODOX CHURCHHOLY TRINITY ORTHODOX CHURCH MARCH 2008 Holy Trinity Orthodox Church 305 Washington Street P. O. Box 2876 New Britain, CT 06050-2876 Holy Trinity Orthodox

2007 financial statements-See Paul Salina and he will get you one) We haven’t noticed any further deterioration inside the church. The next project will be to patch up the interior and as we move closer to the 100th anniversary of the building, to repaint the entire church interior. Paul Salina reported that he has had difficulty in locating any-one to professionally clean the chandelier. CT Lighting informed Paul that the chandelier is beautiful and unique and should be taken down to be cleaned and repaired. The wiring is probably brittle and should be replaced. Perhaps as it is taken down for cleaning and repairs a hoist should be added for future cleaning. Rough estimates to just take down and clean $3K-$5K and to take down, repair etc $8K-$10K. The chandelier truly needs to be cleaned and just may be beyond our ability to do so. The value of the chandelier is unknown, a suggestion was made to con-sider that value be checked and if need be added to the insurance policy. The ceiling tiles in the church school area were replaced yesterday. Painting of the walls in the church school area should take place in next few weeks. The Drain Doctor thinks the water problems have been rectified. We have not had any water since the drains were cleaned in the spring. We can now address the floors/carpeting. The area where the coffee hour is served may be replaced with tile/linoleum. The kitchen tiles may also be replaced. The last carpeting bids we received were in 2005 ranging from $4700 - $5300. A $2,000.00 donation has

been received from the Beck family. Motion to authorize up to $10K (including the donation) for enhancements of the church hall as needed but mainly to the floor by Mike Wanik/Beth Bradanini. Motion carried. **Caretaker’s House** In February 2007 while the house was unattended the furnace went out and pipes froze and burst causing significant damage. The insurance company was notified and Bill Kapura Builders contacted to reno-vate. The interior of the house has been completely refur-bished - all walls and ceilings have been repainted, fur-nace and plumbing replaced, windows replaced, etc. Totals cost of claim $73,926.34 deductible $ 1,000.00 Insurance check $72.926.34 The cost to the parish was $7,509.75 for replacing win-dows, removing the pantry wall, and electrical upgrade that was not covered under the insurance policy. Thank you to Paul Salina for a terrific job in handling the insurance claim and the refurbishing of the Beaver St. house. Dan Bradanini presented some options for future use of the building. Rent vs. Sell (A copy of his report is on file with the secretary.) The general feeling was not to rent, thereby taking a chance with a bad tenant who may dam-age the extensive work that was done inside the house. Motion to allow the parish council to proceed forward to sell the Beaver St. property in the best interest of the church by George Ludko/Ellen Santoro. Motion carried.

The church property was surveyed about 10 years ago, and there was an ancient right of way through the prop-erty which needs to be reviewed on the deed. When a de-cision is set to move forward in selling the property the parish will be informed just in case someone in the parish is interested in purchasing the house. NEW BUSINESS

*2008 Budget and Salary Recommendations A copy of the budget report is on file with the secretary. Paul Salina went over the line items of the income and expense col-umns. A new line item to cover the cost of The All-American Council to be held in Pittsburgh in Nov 2008 was added. We have already received a bill for registra-tion fees of $1500.00. Some gifts to outside charities have been reduced as we did not meet our 2007 budget and we need to complete the projects here. Paul Culton informed us that the OCA pension fund is a separate fund from the OCA funds - he, Bishop Nikon and Father Westerberg are the trustees.
