ABSENCE OF GLARE. The light is refracted upward hence

the operators'sight lines follow the direction of lightdistribution.HIGH UTILIZATION OF LIGHT OUTPUT. The upward dis-

tribution of more than 60 percent of total lamp lumensprovides eflective illumination on overhead vertical and

horizontal surfaces.

PERMANENCE. The one-piece prismatic light controllingelement is molded ENDURAL glass which has built-insafety factoN to withstand all tempelature gradients

encountered in operating outdoor luminaires. Metalfixture parts of stainless steel and cast or spun ahlrni-num will withstand severe wcather.NO PERMANENT DEPRECIATION. Original output can be

restored by thorough cleaning, and natural cleansing

action of rain maintains high operating output.

LOWMAINTENANCE

COST. Sealed gasket assembliesaround top and bottom of refractor keep interior of unitdirt and weather tight.SIMPLE ADJUSTMENT OF LIGHT DISTRIBUTION ON JOB.

While lamp is on, entire unit can be rotated up or down

to adjust beam of maximum candlcpower to reach loca-

tions oJ disqonnect switches and other overhead struc-ture. A set screw locks unit in adjustment,ACCESSIBILITY FOR RELAMPING. Unit can be morrnted

on bracket or post top where there will be no danger of

contact with high voltage when relamping.

For over 35 years, Holophane units have been used

for lighling outdoor substations in all parts of the

United States, Canada, and Mexico. During that time,

several minor mechanical revisions had been made inthe design of these units but now an entirely new and

improved luminaire has been developed, based on ex-

perience and knowledge gained from successful opera-

tion of this type of equipment in the field.

The core of the new design is the basic light con-

trolling element - a one piece plislJ,atic refractor made

of ENDURAL{, (thermally shble) glass. On the bottom

of this refractor there is a spun on and sealed 16 gauge

Alzak aluminum reflector; the reflector, in turn, being

assembled to a threaded cast aluminum collar.

The collar engages threads in a cast aluminum fitterwhich supports a mogul basc lamp socket, and is ma-

chined to slip fit to a depth of 2%" over a 1%" pipe. The

fitter is locked in place on mounting bracket or post top

by two stainless steel set screws.

The top of the refractor is closed by a 16 gauge, 11

inch diameter aluminum coverlvhich is gasketed and

clamped to the refractor by two spring tension stainless

steel latches. Interior access is obtained by removing this

top cover. When unit is being relamped, the cover hangsoutside the refractor on a permanently attached stainless

sieel bead chain thei'eby fi'eeing both hands of the main-

tenance man.

The refractor assembly can be rotated on the threaded

fitter. The beam o{ maximum candlepower, which peaks

nornally at 105', can be raised or lowered 5".

CHOICE OF LAMPS.

500 or 300 watt incandescent lamps may be used.

MOUNTING ACCESSORIES

Bracket No. 0876 is used on vertical members of sub-

station structures for NEW installations of No.04250.

Additional ground lighting units can also be attachedto this bracket.

For RELIGHTING jobs where there are old style1%" threaded brackets (Catalog No. 0871-T), arr adapt-er, Catalog No.0218 is used for installations of No.

04250 to replace obsolete lighting units.

Standards for post top mounting of No.04250 maybe secured from post or pole manufacturers.

Shields

Metal inner shields Sd-51 are available for use on

stations near residential properties. Shields can be

ordered with new fixtures, or purchased separately andinstalled in existing fixtures. In final assemblies, shieldsmay be rotated in fixtures to the most effective positioru.
