Hoisting Celebrates 25 Years of Aiming High

In 1990, business partners Wayne Zuchotzki and Wade McIntyre incorporated Hoisting Ltd. “We had discussed the idea of a business partnership many times,” says Zuchotzki.

It was during one of those discussions that he came up with the name, Hoisting. A few months later, during his first year of elec-trical school, McIntyre called and asked if he wanted to start up Hoisting Ltd. The answer was, yes.

“Hoisting is a full service, custom design, special application and normal use solution provider for all of your overhead crane, material handling and below-the-hook lifting applications,” says Zuchotzki. “We offer in-house structural engineering, electrical engineering and 3D drafting.

We cover the full line of services that envelops our customer’s needs. We are accountable for our performance and seek to un-derstand our customers’ requirements.” The company has a fully stocked parts warehouse and access to all major brands of equip-ment, along with fully qualified service technicians and manufac-turing staff.

Their original facility on the south side of Edmonton was fine at first, but keen business sense and great customer service saw the company quickly outgrow that location. “Manufacturing and ser-vice was steadily growing and we needed more space, says Zuchotzki of the move to their Nisku facility. “An opportunity came up with a very good client, Dee with First Class Sandblasting and Paint-ing. The company was moving and needed to sell their existing building. Dee actually gave Hoisting an opportunity to rent to own. What a great deal from a great guy!”

The Nisku shop is impressive. Hoisting sits on 2.25 acres and has a 6,400 square foot service shop, 4,200 square feet of office space, and a 15,000 square foot manufacturing facility. A planned expan-sion will add another 10,000 square feet of manufacturing space. The addition is needed to house their growing fleet, as Zuchotzki explains. “Over the last 15 years, Hoisting has developed a rental fleet of special application, high capacity and long lift manual, air and electric chain hoists. In addition to the hoists we have many trolleys, snatch blocks and steel and aluminum gantries for rent.

Hoisting not only provides rental services to end users, we also serve as a supplier to other equipment rental companies.” The com-pany’s crane services also include inspections, preventative mainte-nance, repairs, upgrades and overhauls. “It is our ability to correctly troubleshoot and solve problems for our clients, focusing on the root cause while meeting all safety and governmental regulations,” he says of what makes them stand out in the industry.

Since 1990, Hoisting has grown to include 53 employees, 15 in the office and 38 in the field – and each one is committed to the company and their tasks. “Thank you [team] for all your dedica-tion to our core values, safety and quality. You are the key to our success!” praises Zuchotzki.

One of Hoisting’s early memorable projects was the moderniza-tion of the Trans Alta generating station at Wabamun Lake. “The crane was a 110 ton turbine hall and it required a control upgrade from the big street car drum controller system that worked the crane’s movements. It needed a more modern, magnetic motor starter system.”

The impressive projects didn’t stop there. Project after project saw the company make solid gains in the industry each year. Says Zuchotzki, “We were given the opportunity by Steven Collicutt of Collicutt Energy Services in Red Deer to supply his new building with 40 ton cranes. The complete project was in the millions of dol-lars. Today, that building and the cranes are owned by Finning and we still perform the crane service and maintenance for them. Most recently, Hoisting was awarded its largest contract in its history, which is to supply cranes to the oil sands projects in Fort McMurray.”

Hoisting has always aimed high, and to Zuchotzki, that’s just part of their daily routine. “The biggest challenge we face is continuous improvement, and not allowing ourselves to become complacent in our knowledge while remaining focused on how we can con-tinually improve the safety and efficiency of material handling,” he smiles. “The biggest reward is seeing the company gain strength and respect in the industry while maintaining a dedicated long term team of employees.” Aiming high also means giving back. The company is proud to support children-centred charities such as Make-A-Wish and the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation.

Today, Zuchotzki looks back on that question that got the com-pany started over two decades ago and knows he made the right decision. “What’s next for Hoisting? The future for Hoisting is very bright, I can see it from the bottom to the top. We have a great future foundation in technicians, fabricators and the management that supports and leads them.

“There are so many organizations, groups, employees, and indi-viduals who have supported me and Hoisting over the last 25 years. We could not have succeeded without them all. My wife Karin and our boys have been there from the beginning and have sup-ported me every day. Wade McIntrye, the founding partner and a close friend – there would be no Hoisting without him. Many early morning hours and late evenings were spent working on our cli-ents’ sites, growing the business and building relationships through hard work. My new partner, Guthrie Mechanical Inc., and the management at Guthrie Mechanical are instrumental in the posi-tive growth during the last six years and for the future of Hoisting.
