PreEngineeringCurriculum
In1930,onecouldattainadegreeofBachelorofScienceinBusinessAdministrationbytakingtwoyearsofcoursesintheCollegeofEngineeringfollowedbytwoyearsofcoursesintheCollegeofCommerceandJournalism.Theengineeringcurriculumcoursesincludedalgebra,geometry,calculus,rhetoricandcomposition,mechanicaldrawing,woodandmetalworking,surveying,accounting,economics,elementsofelectricalengineering,andgeneralmechanicalengineering.
This,“CurriculumforBusinessAdministrationinCombinationwithEngineering,”asitwasdenotedinthecatalog,wastheprecursortothebirthofIndustrialEngineeringattheUniversityofFlorida.Asnotedinthe1930catalog(p.18),the“coursehasbeenarrangedforstudentswhowishtoprepareforadministrativeandsellingpositionsinthefieldofmanufacturing,railwayandpublicutilityoperation.”
TheEarlyYears
AsstatedintheTheUniversityRecord,BulletinofCoursesfortheyear1933‐34(Volume28,Series1,Numbers4‐7,July1,1933),anew“course”wasdevelopedleadingtothedegreeofBachelorofScienceinIndustrialEngineering.“ForthefirsttimeagroupingoftheessentialandfundamentalcoursesinboththeCollegeofEngineeringandCollegeofBusinessAdministrationishereoffered.ThepurposeofthecurriculumistogiveastudentinfouryearsasmuchaspossibleofthetrainingoftheElectricalandMechanicalEngineerandinadditionabout50creditsofworkinBusinessAdministration.”
Thecurriculum,aspublishedinthe1933‐34BulletinofCourses(p.212),consistedof144hoursofcoursework.Table1givesthefour‐yearcurriculum.Ofthe19hoursofelectives,atleasthalfweretobetakenintheCollegeofBusinessAdministration,withviablechoicesincludingstatistics,factoryanddistributioncostaccounting,productionmanagement,marketing,principlesoftransportation,andlaboreconomics.
PhilipOsbornYeatonwasnamedthecounselorfortheprograminthe1934BulletinandofficiallynamedProfessorofIndustrialEngineeringandHeadoftheDepartmentinthe1936Bulletin.YeatonwasformerlyanAssociateProfessorofMechanicalEngineeringwithdegreesfromDartmouth(S.B.)andHarvard(B.S.inMechanicalEngineering).ThedepartmentofferedboththeBachelorofIndustrialEngineeringandMasterofScienceinIndustrialEngineering.
IntheDean’s(B.R.VanLeer)reporttothePresident(JohnJ.Tigert)coveringJuly,1934throughJune,1936,thatwaspresentedtotheBoardofControl,itwasstatedthat“AcurriculumleadingtothedegreeofBachelorofIndustrialEngineeringhasbeenformulatedandProfessorP.O.Yeatonplacedincharge.Itsgrowthincourses,students,andinteresthasbeenalmostphenomenal.Thiscourseisabasicengineeringcoursehavingallthefundamentalsandrigorwhichusuallyaccompanyanengineeringcurriculum,andbecauseofitsadditionaltraininginaccountingandbusinessadministrationitshouldproveapopularandusefulcourseofstudyforanincreasingnumberofyoungmen.”
AccordingtotheBulletin,the“IndustrialEngineeringcurriculumisdesignedtogiveyoungmenwithengineeringabilitysomedegreeoftraininginthefundamentalsofbusinessadministration.Thecurriculumemphasizesmen,materials,money,machining,methods,marketsandmanagement.Itisespeciallydesignedforthosewhodesiretoenterthemanagerialfieldsofindustrythroughtechnicalavenues.”
Alongwithslightchangestothecurriculumin1936,sevencoursesweredesignatedinthedepartmentattheundergraduatelevel:
