Offerings ~

This Advent we will be celebrating blessed beginnings. Every child born into our lives is a blessed beginning, whether the child has two parents, one parent, married parents, or single parents. We celebrate the hope that child brings, since each child is filled with the potential of making such a huge difference in our world. For us, each newborn baby is Jesus born into our midst once again. It is difficult to fathom anything closer to purity and perfection, or anything closer to God, than a baby. Each child is filled with innocence, relying on us completely, eager to be loved and to love, waiting for the imprint we will have on its life. As we look upon the baby, we imagine all that is open for this child. What will become of this child’s life? Like Mary, we ponder as we watch the baby sleep. Why is it that as they age, some of the wonder and beauty seems to wear off? No one ever says that a baby is anything other than beautiful or cute. As they get older, people begin to make judgments. My mother used to say, “Why that young man is so homely he’s cute.” I don’t know why we cannot continue looking at each person as full of potential and beauty.

I believe that God looks at each of us much as we look at a newborn baby. God sees the purity and innocence even though we try to hide it under our gruff exteriors, thinking that we need to be less vulnerable. God knows our potential, our goodness, our hopes and our dreams. God knows what is in our hearts even more than we know ourselves. Like young children admiring their own artwork, never dismissing it because of a blemish, God views us as God’s artwork. You are unique. You are special and beautiful. When you were born, people gushed over you. You are God’s amazing creation, just as you are. So sit back and take the time to thank God for your beauty, for your potential, and pray for God to open your eyes to see yourself as God sees you. Lord, this season of Advent and Christmas we give thanks to you for the birth of Jesus into this world. We also thank you for our own birth, and the blessed beginnings of life that we witness. Open our eyes this season to see ourselves in a new way, that we may go forward with a fresh and blessed beginning of accepting ourselves the way you accept and love us. Amen. Grace and Peace, Brenda

I know that Michelle Ward has already conveyed our appreciation for the years that Hillview carried IIRAH under its fiscal wing. I just want to add my own word of thanks to you and to the other leaders of the congregation. Your church has been a very consistent ally in the search for remedies to hunger. We also welcomed Ken and Ginny Miller, Elizabeth Carter, Christi Perkey, Kent and Gale Day, Bob Barr, Richard Cooke, and Bill and Marlys Castle into full membership. Michael Hayhurst, Michelle Morris, and Joel Phipps have rejoined Hillview. Axl Kowilizyk was baptized on November 8. This made November very special in the life of this church.

Welcome New Members

Please be sure to greet our new members! Several of them have found places to volunteer, so to get to know Christi Perkey, you just might need to volunteer to help with the Youth Group, and to get to know Bob Barr, you may need to volunteer to help with the sound system. We see new faces almost every Sunday, and it is wonderful to be able to describe this welcoming community when people contact the office to ask about Hillview. Claudia Flora, Membership Secretary

Wow! What a treat to be able to get a glimpse of Hillview UMC’s Hillview Farm VBS! It looks as though the children had a great time, while exploring Bible stories and engaging in hands-on mission projects for hungry neighbors. I’m glad you found SoSA’s VBS material helpful along the way, and, of course, we are so grateful for your VBS mission giving of $200.32, which will share 8,346 servings of fresh fruits and vegetables with people in greatest need this fall. Thank you! Blessings, Lynette Johnson Director of Church Relations Society of St. Andrew

Notes of Thanks

Thanks to the Youth Group of Hillview who came to rake our leaves on Saturday, November 14. They made fast work of our pile of leaves. A big “Thank you” to them. Dorothy and Mark Friend

Finding God in a Bag of Groceries: Sharing Food, Discovering Grace by Laura Lapins Willis In a tiny food pantry, Laura Willis discovered her own hunger for God and a world of neighbors she never knew: the lonely, the unemployed, chronically poor families and middle-class folks surprised to be struggling in a great recession. To each she offered a bag of groceries, a compassionate ear, and a heart of love.

We would like to extend an opportunity for anyone interested to be able to help out in worship in the following three areas: Sound System (runs the sound board and adjusts microphone volumes) Slide Show advance tech (advances to next slide during worship) Slide Show developer (works with Brenda to develop PowerPoint for worship) No experience necessary; training will be provided. If you are interested, contact Ron Halverson at [email protected] or 954-6202.

Hillview Youth Group News (by Claire Chambers)

During November we explored the idea of God as a comedian and how we can use the gift of a sense of humor that God gave us to uplift and support each other. And that does NOT include sarcasm. We spent some time discussing the book of Job and read quite a few Psalms. Of course, there were several games of signs, “Veg Head” and dodge darts. The kids

This Christmas consider an "alternative" way of giving a Christmas gift to someone by supporting a mission project that will make a world of difference to a child in Honduras or to a child in Africa. Alternative giving is easy to do:

Choose your project. Select the matching Alternative

Gift card and envelope found under the Alternative Gift Tree in the Gathering Area.

Place your check (with the project name on the memo line) or cash in the small envelope and place it in the gift bag on the table.

Keep the gift card and matching envelope to give to the recipient whom you are honoring with this gift.

We have selected the following two mission projects this year—Honduras Scholarship Fund and Imagine No Malaria. For more information on these missions, check out the Faith In Action bulletin board in the Ballantyne hallway.

are unable to attend because of enrollment fees plus the uniforms and school supplies they are required to buy—about $120 per

year. Contributions from Hillview provide assistance to students from Fuerzas Unidas, one of the poorest areas in Honduras. Hillview established a special relationship with the Fuerzas Unidas Methodist Church in 2004 and 2006 when our Volunteer In Mission teams were hosted there. We recently received 17 letters from the students we sponsored this past year—all thanking our church for sending them to school. By helping these students attend school, you will make a difference in their lives.

Imagine No Malaria Fund In Sub-Saharan Africa, malaria continues to kill a person every 60 seconds. But there is hope! Imagine

No Malaria is part of a global partnership and together with our partners, our generation can beat malaria once and for all. United Methodists are committed to bring an end to death and suffering from malaria. Through UMCOR, Imagine No Malaria funding implements health-care strategies, develops infrastructure, and sponsors integrated health campaigns that promote malaria prevention, diagnostics and treatment, and health education across the sub-Saharan region. With your donation to Imagine No Malaria, you can offer hope to end malaria that will make a world of difference.

If you want to give more tangible gifts, you can make a commitment to purchasing Fair Trade items, buying gifts from Dunia Marketplace in Hyde Park, or buying locally produced gifts whenever possible. Make a difference with your giving this Christmas season!

Thanks to Joe Prin, Sam Goodwin, Ron Halverson, Bob Barr, and Elvin Ballance for finishing the new sound cabinet in the sanctuary. Ron and Bob checked out the wiring to the speaker on the west side of the sanctuary, which apparently has never worked. They hired a firm

to access the speaker and wire it correctly. They also fixed the overhead projector that projects onto the back wall of the sanctuary. Ron also installed a desktop computer in the sound cabinet and with the help of Bob and Jared Sene wired the new, donated, larger soundboard

Many of the delegates coming to General Conference 2016 are from climates that are much warmer than Portland’s usual May weather. We want to offer them radical hospitality by anticipating their needs.

The hats and scarves can be from any size, pattern or color. Use your favorite pattern or find lots of free patterns on-line. Keep in mind that the delegates are both men and women, so make some of the hats big enough for men. My knitting books show a circumference of 17” to “22” for women and 18” to 24” for men. Scarves should be 40”-60” in length. If you do not knit, nice scarves can be made by cutting fleece the right length and fringing the ends. Claudia Roberts (503-284-9182 or [email protected])

Please hold on to completed items for now; we will have a place to collect them after the holidays. For questions or more information, contact Debbie Mallis at 853-2740 or [email protected].
