Humility – All our successes are due to God

But, ‘Let him who boasts boast in the Lord”. 2 Corinthians 10:17

30 July

Principal ’ s Ponderings…

Kia ora Parents, This week I have asked Mrs Learey, Head of Junior Campus, to contribute to the newsletter. Many Blessings to one and all, Steve Frost (Principal) Dear Hillview Community

School-wide the teachers and pupils are currently discussing our school value – Humility. What is it? How is it shown?

The Bible describes humility as meekness, lowliness and absence of self. The Greek word translated “humility” in Colossians 3:12 and elsewhere literally means “lowliness of mind,” so we see that humility is a heart attitude, not merely an outward demeanour. One may put on an outward show of humility but still have a heart full of pride and arrogance. Biblical humility is necessary to enter the kingdom, but furthermore it is necessary in order to be great in the kingdom (Matthew 20:26-27). Here Jesus is our model. Just as He did not come to be served, but to serve, so must we commit ourselves to serving others in lowliness of mind, always considering others better than ourselves (Philippians 2:3).

This is not to think being humble means grovelling in front of others or thinking we're no good and others are better. That's not what the Bible says. God says when you are humble; you are free from pride and arrogance. You know that in yourself you are inadequate, yet you also know who you are in Christ. You can walk humbly in the power of the Holy Spirit, not in your own strength. The picture of humility in the Bible is one of a strong person who loves others, not someone who is a wimp. Humility also is recognising that you need God’s help, knowing you can’t truly succeed in your own strength. It is thanking God for your talents and gifts, and giving him credit for your accomplishments. It is being comfortable with who you are in Christ and seeking to build others up, not yourself. It is gratefully walking in God’s grace, love, and forgiveness. God has promised to give grace to the humble, while He opposes the proud (Proverbs 3:34; 1 Peter 5:5). If we humble ourselves, God gives us more grace and exalts us (Luke 14:11). Along with Jesus, Paul is also our example of humility. In spite of the great gifts and understanding he had received, Paul saw himself as the “least of the apostles” and the “chief of sinners” (1 Timothy 1:15; 1 Corinthians 15:9). Like Paul, the truly humble will glory in the grace of God and in the cross, not in self-righteousness (Philippians 3:3-9).

The founder of the OMF Missionary Society, Hudson Taylor, was scheduled to speak at a large Presbyterian Church in Melbourne. The moderator of the service introduced the missionary in eloquent and glowing terms. He told the large congregation all that Taylor had accomplished in China, and then presented him as "our illustrious guest." Taylor stood quietly for a moment, and then opened his message by saying, "Dear friends, I am the little servant of an illustrious Master."

We want to teach our children/pupils that they can be strong knowing who they are in Christ, and to celebrate their gifts and talents knowing from whom they came. Furthermore we want them to know they should be looking to put others first, and not think of themselves above others. Let’s echo the words of Hudson Taylor, “less of me, more of God.”

May God bless you,

Margaret Learey Head of Junior Campus

Tips for Learning

Year 0-2 - Is your child struggling? (by Jen Chamberlain) Writing BIG: Sand or salt trays, play dough or clay (many supermarkets sell coloured clay $1.50 per pack), and coloured glue. Spelling/Writing: Have fun finger tracing sounds/letters or words being learned at school in sand or salt trays. Make alphabet letters with clay, play dough or coloured glue and then sound out words together – eg: (b-e-d, f-e-d; b-a-t, c-a-t).
