EVENTS IN SCHOOL

New Year 7s

The Induction Events for the new Year 7 students were a real success – it was

lovely to meet all the new families joining Hillview in September. On Monday

evening the students took part in a series of ‘icebreakers’ led by our prefect

team, whilst parents browsed Year 7 work and listened to Mrs Burkett and

Mrs Makepeace outlining Hillview’s plans and aims for their daughters.

Induction Day yesterday was similarly action-packed. Students tried their hand at

various lessons and took part in high-energy team building events.

Many new friendships were made and we look forward to welcoming them all

back in September.

Year 12 Taster Week

Prospective students that had applied to Hillview Sixth Form were in school this

week. With the most applications to join our Sixth Form ever received, there was

a record number of attendees with us this week for their ‘tasters’. External

students had an opportunity on Monday to meet other new and current Sixth

Form students. They completed a range of team-building activities, including an

orienteering task, enabling them to familiarise themselves with the site. All

students experienced at least three subject choices, helping them to make

informed decisions for their post-16 options. Students have provided extremely

positive feedback following the week, stating that subjects were exciting,

engaging and a very informative experience. The majority of students stated that

they would highly recommend future prospective students to attend Hillview

Sixth Form Taster Week in the future.

The Sixth Form team looks forward to welcoming students in September. A

reminder that enrolment for internal students is 23 August.

Arts Federation Workshops

Yesterday, the Textiles team hosted the West Kent Arts Federation teachers meet

-up. We demonstrated four textiles technique workshops to other local teachers,

VISITS & TRIPS

Year 12 Trip to New Designers & Fabric Sourcing

Last Friday we visited the New Designers Exhibition in Islington,

to meet all of the latest textile and fashion graduates from a

variety of universities who were exhibiting their work. Students

viewed the graduates’ work, spoke to lecturers from a range of

universities and collected business cards and prospectuses to aid

them in their decisions for university application. We then went

to Goldhawk Road for some fabric sourcing, where there are over

15 fabric shops to show the girls where to source good quality,

reasonably priced fabric.

Young Fashion Designer of the Year

Last Saturday, we had 3

finalists in the Young

Fashion Designer of the

Year competition, held at

Kent College, Pembury.

Of those, Ciara Spencer

was placed 2nd in the

GCSE category and

Amelia Whearty was

placed 1st in the age 11-

14 category.

Congratulations also go to Olivia Sandford-Wilson

who did very well to reach the final of the A Level

category, where only 8 students were selected and

Olivia was the only Year 12 candidate, with the other

finalists all being in their final year of sixth form.

Each category had over 180 entrants from a variety of

schools across the south of England, so to have a

Hillview student representing each age category was a

real achievement.

Year 7—Wakehurst Place

The Science Department visited Wakehurst Place over two days this week with Year 7

students. This is what Ruby Sellicks (7D) had to say about her day:

“On Tuesday 3rd July it was my day to go on the trip to Wakehurst Place and we could

not have had better weather. The sun shone magnificently as we completed the

activities, which consisted of pond dipping and studying a variety of plant species. Our

day began at the meadow, which was stupendously beautiful to say the least. While we

were there, we learnt to recognise different species of insects and plants and then we

used a metal frame to complete the practical task, marking out an area that we were

analysing, which helped us to start to be able to recognise the species of plant when we

were out strolling leisurely through the fields, meadows and woods. We completed the

task again in the wood, using randomised co-ordinates to direct us where we should

study. We had our lunch in the magnificent sunshine, then went on to complete the

best activity of all (in my opinion): pond dipping. We swerved our nets around in the

water, doing figure of eights, and stroked the reeds in order to collect water-dwelling

creatures.

Page 3: Hillview Weekly News LETTERS HOME

We found a worm-like creature that was hard to identify until we looked it up on our

chart. It was a lovely day and I would definitely come back in the future, whatever

the weather. “

Year 10 Graphic Students—New Designers Show

The students had a great time at the show in Islington yesterday. They took part in

a design workshop run by Coventry University called 'Creative Review You' and

designed a magazine cover as a self-portrait. Students also had the opportunity to

look at a wide range of universities, who were showcasing their courses and

students’ work, which will help to inspire our students current projects and future

career paths.

REMINDER—Last day of term, 20 July 2018

Please remember that school finishes at 12.30 p.m. on the last day of term for

students. Hams Buses will be leaving at that time. Any students unable to get

home are able to remain in school until 2.00 p.m. when the school will close. Please
