Now Patriots are out to deflate Falcons' hopes in Super Bowl By Associated Press, adapted by Newsela staff 01.25.17 For one month, the New England Patriots were without their superstar quarterback, Tom Brady. He served a four-game suspension from the National Football League for altering footballs before a game.

Somehow, his absence didn't stop the Patriots. They're going to the Super Bowl against Matt Ryan and the Atlanta Falcons.

Much of the attention between now and the NFL championship game February 5 in Houston, Texas, will be focused on Brady versus Ryan. However, the key matchup could be Atlanta's strong offense against the unheralded defense of New England. The Falcons scored the most points in the 2016 season. The Patriots allowed the fewest. Both Teams Are On A Roll

And these two teams are playing their best football at the most important time. American Football Conference champion New England has won nine games in a row. It hasn't even

trailed since November 27. National Football Conference champion Atlanta has won its past six in a row, scoring at least 33 points in each.

"We'll enjoy this," Ryan said after earning his first Super Bowl trip in his ninth season. "But we've got some work to do." Brady, coach Bill Belichick, and the Pats will be seeking their fifth Super Bowl trophy, and second in three years. This will be the team's league-record ninth appearance in the Super Bowl, including titles in the 2002, 2004, 2005 and 2015 editions.

"This team showed a lot of mental toughness over the course of the year," Brady said. The Falcons have never won the Super Bowl. This will be Atlanta's second trip to the big game. It lost to Denver in 1999. The club has never had a quarterback quite as good as Ryan, though. "Matty Ice" Is Hot

He led Atlanta past Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers 44-21 Sunday in the NFC championship game. The guy nicknamed "Matty Ice" went 27 for 38 for 392 yards, four touchdowns and zero interceptions. "We did exactly what we've been doing all year ,and it feels really good," Ryan said. He became the first quarterback in NFL history to throw for at least three touchdowns in four postseason games in a row. "We'll be ready to go. That's for sure."

Later Sunday, the 39-year-old Brady threw for three touchdowns. It was the ninth time he had done that in a playoff game, tying the record of Hall of Famer Joe Montana. Brady helped the Patriots beat Ben Roethlisberger 36-17 for the AFC championship.

Quickly, oddsmakers in Las Vegas, Nevada, made New England a 3-point favorite over Atlanta in the Super Bowl. In other words, they bet that New England would win.

New England opened the season with a 3-win, 1-loss record while playing without Brady. The NFL says that two years ago, in a playoff game, the Patriots used footballs that had not been fully inflated. Footballs that have less air are said by some to be easier to throw and catch. Roger Goodell, who oversees the NFL, suspended Brady for four games.

Brady went through a long court battle to fight his ban, which became known as "Deflategate."

Page 4: High School World History Cycle 3 Week 4 Lifeworkbushwiedemannworld.weebly.com/uploads/7/1/0/4/... · Brady helped the Patriots beat Ben Roethlisberger 36-17 for the AFC championship.

Roger, Over And Out

During Sunday's game in Foxborough, Massachusetts, spectators mocked Roger Goodell (NFL Commissioner who is in charge of the NFL rules) by chanting "Where is Roger?" He chose to attend the game in Atlanta instead. Brady played well, completing 32 of 42 passes for 384 yards with zero interceptions, but it was New England's defense that stood out.

It happened right away, too. On Pittsburgh's first two drives, nine plays yielded a total of 26 yards. Then there was the stand late in the second quarter, when the Steelers had first-and-goal at the 1-foot line and wound up settling for a field goal. And by game's end, the Patriots had forced two turnovers.

New England ranked as number one in the NFL with points allowed per game. It let other teams score only 15.6 points per game on average and it gave up only 326.4 yards per game, eighth-best. It was a great defensive team. Another One For The Family?

A favorite for most valuable player, Ryan led an offensive team. The Falcons topped the league in scoring with 33.8 per game. They also ranked second in yards gained with 415.8 yards per game. Shanahan, the son of two-time Super Bowl champion coach Mike Shanahan, is expected to be hired after the season as San Francisco's new head coach.

Brady, a three-time Super Bowl MVP and two-time league MVP, and the Patriots also own a pretty effective offense, even after losing star tight end Rob Gronkowski to an injury. New England ranked fourth in yards with 386.2 yards per game and third in points with 27.6 per game.

Another thing these teams have in common: neither hurts itself with turnovers. They tied for the fewest in the regular season with 11.

Roman Numerals Adapted from Rolling Stone by Evan Grossman

Except when it comes to the Super Bowl. It's the only thing in life that seems to use Roman numerals besides old clocks. Roman numerals are so MCMLXXVI. But there's good news for those who want the NFL to ditch its method of numbering the Big Game: Roger Goodell is giving you a one-year reprieve. This Sunday, you can tune in to Super Bowl 50. And you'll be able to reference the winner of Super Bowl 50 down the road without having to look up the Roman numeral for 50. It's L, by the way.

You don't have to brush up on your Roman numerals because it's not going to be Super Bowl L for a few reasons. At the top of the list: Nobody wants to be associated with a loser. Especially the NFL. "Some would ask, 'The letter L, what does that associate with?'" NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy says. The answer, of course, is "Losing."

Football is a game of X's and O's. But it's also long been one of I's and V's, as virtually the only institution in our society that incorporates Roman numerals. Roughly a decade ago, the NFL first began examining what "Super Bowl L" looked like on social media, on mobile devices and on merchandise like T-shirts and caps. The short answer? It didn't look good.

"We also know that teachers across the country appreciate keeping the Roman numeral system alive."

How to Read and Write Roman Numerals

Page 7: High School World History Cycle 3 Week 4 Lifeworkbushwiedemannworld.weebly.com/uploads/7/1/0/4/... · Brady helped the Patriots beat Ben Roethlisberger 36-17 for the AFC championship.

When a lesser number is behind a number greater than 1/I (so, V, X,L, C, D or M), then the number is that number plus the smaller number.

For example, VII is 7 because the letters mean 5 + 2 = 7 OR DC is 500 + 100= 600 When the lesser number is in front of the number greater than it, then you subtract one from the greater number.

For example, IX is 9 because it is X (10) - 1 = 9 OR XM is another way to write 1000 - 10= 900 YOUR TURN!

A section from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have A Dream Speech” in honor of Black History month

And so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream. I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal." I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia, the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood. I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis [safe and happy place] of freedom and justice. I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.

I have a dream today! I have a dream that one day, down in Alabama, with its vicious racists, with its governor having his lips dripping with the words of "interposition" and "nullification" -- one day right there in Alabama little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers.

DIRECTIONS: Answer the following question with your answer and a direct quote.

EXAMPLE QUESTION: What is President Obama referring to when he says faith in America and Americans will be confirmed?

EXAMPLE ANSWER: During a time when many people are frustrated with the election results or the way the U.S. is governed, President Obama reminds Americans that part of democracy is that you will usually find people who share your beliefs. He suggests that some people have lost hope or “faith” in our democracy and government but instead challenges us to remember that “more often than not, your faith in America— and in Americans — will be confirmed” (Paragraph 3).
