Welcome to James Prosser

and his Olympic team

today. For those who don’t

know him, James also

coaches a number of our

young junior players -

however his practice area is

the poor surface at Grenada

not our home pitch at

Redwood Park!

If the rain holds off, both

teams should enjoy the

conditions. Our loss last

week was a pity for a

couple of reasons, firstly,

a poor penalty decision

in the second half gave

Island Bay the lead near

the end of the game. The

other area in which I think

we suffered was that some

of our lighter speedsters

appeared to be affected by

the surface. Hopefully with

the grass much shorter and

the ground firmer it will suit

them better today.

The Capital 1 team has had

a good start to the season

after losing its first game,

however they won the next

two games well.

The season is only a few

weeks old but already the

Saints in Div 11 having been

relegated last season are

showing a remarkable turn

of form already winning its

first two games 8-4 and 7-3.

Some of our “over 5”

Masters players have gone

to Auckland the play in the

World games. They play a

game every 2nd day over

a week so let’s hope they

have plenty of subs as they

are going to suffer, but I am

sure they will enjoy it.

I hope everyone enjoys their

game today. .

TAWALADIESvs WESTSWe came up short despite our best endeavors...

First round in the Kelly cup, and unfortunately our last. The day was set to be an interesting one from the start with cyclone cook making an appearance, however he only appeared once or twice leaving uswith spots of rain and sunshine through the game at Endeavour Park.

From the short 5 day turn around it was a rematch with the young enthusiastic Western Suburbs. The first 20mins the fight was strong as we managed to keep them scoreless, despite Wests having the majority of possession. The consistent pressure that Wests applied lead to a magnitude of goal scoring chances in the first half, so the fact that Mini only conceded 3 shows her outstanding efforts in goal.

The second half started

a lot better than the first with MVP Lizzy creating several fast break opportunities, with the final ball just letting us down.

The best chance of the half fell to super striker Alex who managed to shoot straight at the keeper in a one on one situation. 2 more goals conceded in the second half didn’t do us justice as we eventually went down 5 nil despite a heroic effort in goal from Elly. The girls will need to put this result behind them quickly and hold their heads high as we look ahead to a strong game against Wellington United Sapphires onMonday.

MATCH REPORTS

WRITER: JONATHAN COBB

Playing a team that had just come down from Div 1 Masters meant it was not going to be an easy game

on Good Friday. Fortunately the pitch was in good shape despite all of the recent rain and this, along with a fair playing opposition and a honest referee, helped to add to what turned out to be an exciting game. From the off we put them under pressure and created a few opportunities. Interestingly their defence and keeper looked a bit

shaky when pressured – not what we expected. For most of the first half we held our own and battled like for like. Sure we needed Jeff on his best ever form on occasions, and some poor shooting from their strikers but it looked like we’d be heading in all even at half time. Unfortunately a front post corner and a little nick from their striker stopped this from being the case – a shame really since we’d dealt effectively with a number of high corners; something that we didn’t manage last season. The second half started much the same, but this time it was time for our Zimbabwean internationals to shine. A gritty performance by Toga resulted in his first goal of the season, sliding the ball under the keeper from short range. One all

and it was game on. Unfortunately a breakaway from Wests resulted in an excellent cross which their striker headed home for the six yard box. For this to be the final score would have been a travesty since we’d more than held our own and as such it turned out not to be.Jonesy after another battling performance earned us a free kick on the edge of their box. Serdar stepped up and everyone was ready for one of his well struck shots. But the man of surprises, scooped the ball over their wall and

it fell just in front of the six yard box. Obviously he’d told people what he was going to do as 4 of our players beat the offside trap and were lining up to beat the keeper with no defenders in sight. Francis took control and slotted it away! Fair play to their ref for ignoring the (wrong) cries for offside and allowing the goal. With not long to go it fell to Jeff to show his skills and make a point blank save from a corner in the last minute of the game to earn us a well deserved draw.

A great team display with everyone including our subs playing their part but ultimately the plaudits go to Jeff for a number of magnificent saves.

Interestingly their defence and keeper looked a bit shaky when pressured – not

what we expected.

MENS PREMSVS ISLAND BAY

Home match for our second Easter fixture against Island Bay, Redwood was in good

condition after heavy overnight rain even if the grass was slightly long,

A couple of changes to the starting lineup with Gareth Bott on debut slotting into right back and Lewis partnering Jamie at centre half. Also a formation change with a back to the future 4-4-2, with Soe joining Mikey up top and looking to get in behind the visitors back four.

Unfortunately for us our runs and the pass didn’t match and we were often caught offside. Our back four were defending well and, along with keeper Lance, continued to thwart the opposition attackers.

WRITER: RICHIE MARTIN

Two huge decisions in a five minute period changed the match...

MATCH REPORT

As ever we showed an excellent attitude and late in the first half Soe combined well with Mike, however Mike’s shot was saved no score at halftime.

Message at the interval was to lift the quality of passing and time our runs to breach theIr offside trap.

The chances would come. We started well and looked likely to break the deadlock, Soe always looked a threat with his pace and quick feet.

Two huge decisions in a five minute period changed the match, first the ball struck the hand of a lsland Bay defender, apparently no penalty - Should have been a free kick outside the box one would suggest! Then a cross into our box cleared everybody and their attacker went down to a slight touch! Penalty 1-0 down with ten minutes to play.

We created a good chance from Soe’s delivery, unfortunately Paul’s shot grazed the post.

Late into injury time lsland Bay scored to make the points safe. A disappointing result for the Tawa lads and the loyal few supporters. We appreciate your support and will endeavour to achieve positive results.

VETS VS STOKES VALLEY“But the sun came out and it was a good afternoon for some football...

MATCH REPORT

Our first game at Redwood this season and after the

bad weather leading up to the game, we were worried we would be transferred off the green pitch.

But the sun came out and it was a good afternoon for some football. We started with the bare 11 and hoping Cory would turn up soon. We were

missing 7 regulars that were either away or were wrapped in cotton wool for their trip to the world Masters in Auckland next week (and didn’t really want to get injured against the Valley).

Peter had to come and play at the back as we needed some speed and Chris/John were our 2 new strikers. Big Mal borrowed Martys gloves and Marty borrowed the

whistle and watch. We kicked off and played some nice football with our usual skills of passing and holding onto the ball. The valley players were starting to drop like flies and after only a short time they had 2 injured on the side line.

We were starting to get on top and with the wind going across the field we had a corner into the wind, Pete put a nice ball across and it held up in the wind, with a header from Kepi goal bound, Noel clipped it in to get his first goal of the season. We dominated the rest of the first half and went into the break at 1-0 up.

Second half and the wind was still blowing across the field and Stokes Valley kicked off and almost scored straight away. They really had better water at half

time and came out a lot stronger.

Our defence held strong and Big Mal pulled off a couple of good saves. Then we started to play and held onto the ball for longer periods.

After a free kick to us deep in our own half Pete, put a long ball through for John to flick onto Lindsay who cut in and then slipped past the last defender and crossed it to Chris for an easy goal to make it 2- nil.

Stokes Valley didn’t give up and after our of attacks they took off down field and their striker turned Neil and put a nice shot past Mal to make it 2-1.

We held on for the next 10 mins for another win. We should have finished a few more chances but

we are still scoring a few goals each game and are 2 wins from 2 games.

Hopefully the Vets that are going to the worlds will do well and score a few goals and win a few games.

Good Luck from the rest of the Vets that aren’t quite 50 .

GRIZZLIESVS WANUIWe continued to have numerous attempts on goal throughout, many the keeper saved very well, many he collected from the Wainui river...

“BAZZA GOT US BACK INTO THE MATCH WITH A TRADEMARK GOAL FOLLOWING GOOD WORK FROM WELSH WOODY...”

Good Friday my arse! This was turning out to be a terrible Friday as the depleted Grizzlies travelled to the valley of

lost souls to take on the Wainuiomata Undertakers.

Actually the drama began Thursday night as en route to the pub, Coach Wood made a mercy dash to the Amora Hotel to collect the strip and chilly bin from late withdrawal Craughwell. The contents of the bin was of more concern than the numerous absentees and fortunately, with supermarkets closed on the Friday, the problem was resolved with a dive into Wood’s personal collection.

Wainui away is never going to be an easy encounter, and so it proved. Missing 3 of our regular defenders in Pine, Wood and Craughwell we welcomed back the experienced Bill Smith. Their replacements at the back were Doyle

and Taylor, both who withdrew on the morning of the match. 5 defenders down before KO and I was eyeing up the beers already. Despite this, and aided by our friends from the Bears ( thanks Nico, Cam and Fat Boy), we were able to field a competitive looking side. On paper at least.

The weather had been poor during the week and I didn’t expect a lot from the Richard Prouse surface. On first look it seemed pretty good and with good grass coverage, however it would cut up fast and become heavy very quick. The changing rooms on first look were more akin to the bathrooms on Trainspotting, no different upon entry. Plenty of memories from the early 2000’s came flooding back.

It didn’t start well for the Grizzlies who conceded after a minute. A failed clearance from Laurie fell to their striker who firmly hit home leaving Barts no chance. Not long after we were 2-0 down, poor defending again and all too easy for Wainui who were well up for it on a day their team

were celebrating their 20 year anniversary. It took us a while to get going and we began to create a number of chances but failed to convert. Bazza got us back into the match with a trademark goal following good work from Welsh Woody down the right. Tawa finished the half strongly and went into half time confident of finishing the stronger side. A very open first half and a game looking like it may finish 8-8.

Second half and again I felt we looked the more dangerous side however we were all too guilty of getting into good positions and then turning over the ball with a poor pass or an extra touch or 3. We continued to have numerous attempts on goal throughout, many the keeper saved very well, many he collected from the Wainui river 50 meters behind the goal. Wainui always looked dangerous on the counter attack, especially when we needlessly turned over possession and they killed us off with a 3rd goal with 15 minutes remaining. A 4th came in the 85th minute to complete a miserable and frustrating game for the Grizzlies. Wainui were a

decent side with some handy players but this was a game I felt we should have done a lot better. While the scoreline flattered the men in Green, we can have no complaints with the result. A more team orientated performance required going forward. Thanks to Wainui who in usual fashion were combative and competitive throughout but a good bunch of guys. We look forward to hosting them in the second round.

A few good performances in red, Welsh worked hard for us in attack trying to drag us back into the match. Bill Smith put in a great shift at right back having to wait 75 minutes for a deserved rest and Cam and Lisandro worked hard in midfield on a heavy ground, their effort often unrewarded having to feed mostly of scraps.

DADS ARMYvs ONSLOWWe thought we may struggle but the slotting of our first goal for the season soon settled our nerves...

14 April at Alex MooreNorth Wgtn Onslow v Army X - (3-3 Draw)

Only our second game as a team against a well experienced North Wellington side. We thought we may struggle but the slotting of our first goal for the season soon settled our nerves. Well done Simon.

Unfortunately we conceded just two minutes after and then conceded another five minutes later. To the credit of the team, we kept our heads up and started to use the wind wisely to our advantage. Using that same wind, Rames P took a speculative shot from half-way which got us anamazing equaliser.

Just on the half way mark,

we made a break on the right side releasing PhilLockwood to slot a wonderful goal underneath their keeper. 3-2 up at half-time.

The wind was against us in the second half but our defence and keeping was outstanding. This was so until an attempted clearance (by me) fell to the feet of their best striker who coolly slotted home an equaliser.

We had to be brave to hold on for the draw, but an outstanding performance for a team that has only just started to play together.

Late in the first half Mike’s looping header was heading for the top corner but was saved by Warfies 6ft 4 keeper. No score at halftime .

Early in the second half the host’s looked to have scored from a dubious looking offside strike. We questioned the linesman asking for a review and had the goal wiped out.

Good Friday match away to defending champion’s Waterside at Kaori Park on a windy, wet day.

We started with an unchanged line up from the previous Saturday and a strong northerly at our backs.

The hosts started brightly, looking confident on the ball and switching the play looking for openings. We looked okay ourselves, nice and compact out of possession with Tom

MEN PREMS vs KARORIWe looked okay ourselves, nice and compact out of possession with Tom and wee Ollie providing width on attack...

Warfies left winger got past his marker cut inside and finished neatly to put the host’s ahead.

We made a couple of changes: Lewis returned after a rib injury and Soe came on for Tom. Soe looked sharp and tested the home keeper with a well struck free kick. However their left winger caused more havoc - his shot was saved by Lance, but tucked home by theire centre forward.

Twenty minutes too go and we lifted the intensity. Our passing improved, Ollie and Nick Mcfadyen pushed on down our right side. They both provided good delivery into the box. Late on, Mike had a good low shot saved by their keeper.

Time ran out as we finished strong,

MENS 2NDSvs KARORI

Needless to say it was a game I was very keen to win, particularly as we had lost to them in a pre season friendly.

Third game of the season saw the 2nd team away to Waterside Karori on Good Friday. Karori were coming off a 7 nil loss to Miramar the previous week so we were bit

concerned of a backlash fromKarori. In addition, the game was a bit of a family affair as my younger brother Richard is coach of the Karori team. Needless to say it

WRITER: MAARTEN ROMIJN

was a game I was very keen to win, particularly as we had lost to them in a pre season friendly.

Tawa had a strong breeze behind them in the first half but it was Karori who started the better ofthe two teams and they dominated possession in the 1st 10 minutes without causing us any real problems. In the 7th minute Shaun crossed to Cameron who shot wide. Six minutes later Gareth played the ball to Drew who shot just wide of the left hand post.

On 26 minutes Tawa earned a free kick on the right hand side of the field. Captain Drew Wild struck the ball beautifully with his left foot to beat the keeper at the near post to give Tawa a 1 nil lead. The rest of the half saw little activity at either end so Tawa took a 1 goal lead into the break

The 2nd half started really well for Tawa with Gary Romijn playing the ball to Cameron Sanderson in the 46th minute who scored from inside the box to make it 2 nil to Tawa. Three minutes later Cameron had another chance when he turned and shot wide.

After that Karori dominated possession but Tawa defended well, getting players behind the ball andbeing very dangerous on the counter attack. On 55 minutes Karori had their 1st shot of the game which was dealt with easily by Ken in goal.

The next big chance fell to Tawa in the 71st minute whenGary headed Drew’s free kick wide

at the far post. The last 10 minutes of the game saw Karori put a little more pressure on the Tawa defence with Ken being called into making a save as well as punching a cross away. Cameron also had another shot which went wide. Final score Tawa 2 Karori 0.

It was a deserved victory for Tawa who, despite not having as much possession as Karori, created more chances during the game.

For Tawa the defence of Geoff, Brent, Bryce and Shaun were solid and Drew and Gareth did well inthe midfield. Cameron had a good game using his pace to good effect on the counterattack as well doing

a good job defensively.

Special thanks to Dillon Lewis and Toby Gualter who play for the Tawa College 1st XI who agreed at short notice to be on the bench. It was really appreciated and they both did a good job for the team when they come on in the last 10 minutes.

Man of the match went to Bryce MacPherson who had another good game at centre back.

This week we welcome Wainui to Redwood Park with both sides having had 2 wins and a loss. It issure to be another tough encounter.
