Year 9 have had a very busy term including the completion of their NAPLAN testing. All year 9 students sat these exams in the Gym and were commended on their positive attitudes towards this formal testing. I would also like to say a big congratulations to all students for this feedback and mature approach. I would also like to acknowledge the hard work of Mrs Weir and her team in organising these exams and ensuring they all ran smoothly. Year 9 have also been representing the school in an extremely positive light by participating in sporting events such as Futsal,

Football, Soccer and also for Year 6 transition events. A big well done and congratulations to all students involved in these activities. I would also like to remind parents and students that they Year 9 Camp is fast approaching and deposits and payments can be made through the front office. This camp is a fantastic experience for all Year 9

students to build upon and strengthen the great bond between students already present in Year 9 and enjoy some excellent activities such as high ropes, giant swing and the infamous mud world. I encourage all students to attend this camp, and remind parents of the payment plans and support available through the school to support student participation.Year 12 have been working hard to complete all their assessments tasks

in what is their final full term of school. In Term 3 Year 12 students will complete their trial exams and will be provided with this timetable very soon. On the subject of exams; the Higher School Certificate official timetable has been published and all students should be able to sign into the NESA website to download and print out their official timetable. At this time, I would like to emphasise the importance of students making a commitment to their studies and remind students and parents of the support structures in place for our Senior Students: Mrs Flanagan, Mrs Weir, and Mrs Field are opening the learning centre for all senior students to complete assessments and private study. The centre is open from 8am, every lunch break, and open until 4:30 Monday - Thursday and 3:30pm on a Friday. Ms Flanagan is also running sessions on making effective study notes and study techniques on a Monday afternoon. Please see Ms Flanagan for more information. I would also like to wish Year 12 good luck for their upcoming exams. Finally, as the school has now introduced some new elements of the school uniform, I would like to congratulate Jye Kelly of Year 9 and Angus Lathan of Year 12. These students were the successful winner of the Vivo prize draw and won a new school jumper. It is great to see all the students embracing this new uniform item! There are more items coming in to support the implementation of the new school uniform so please stay tuned!

Deputy Principal Report Years 7 & 10 - Mrs SomervilleThis term I have had the daunting experience of keeping Mrs Glasson’s chair warm while she was on leave. I have certainly learned a lot about Year 7 and 10 students as well as the curriculum needs for Years 11 and 12 during this time and have found it to be a rewarding experience with many people on hand to help me.During this time I have been working with Mrs Douglas to make sure that Year 10 are on track with their attendance and completion of work so they can be invited to the end of year celebration. Letters regarding attendance were sent out earlier this term and I have a few faithful students who check regularly to make sure they are meeting the contract requirements. Just a reminder that students signed a contract at the start of the year agreeing that to be eligible to attend the celebration evening, their attendance needed to be greater than 75%, they have not had a long suspension or more than two short suspensions and have completed all work and their Authentic Assessment interview. They also need to have met their responsibilities as a member of the school community by ensuring that all fees associated with electives have been met. At this point, we have a large number of students who are eligible to attend and I am pleased to say that there are students who are working hard on catching up on missed work and making a concerted effort to attend more regularly. In the next few weeks we will start looking at subject selections and gathering information regarding the movement of Year 10 into Year 11. We will be surveying the students about their future plans and inviting parents to the school to hear about possible options for students as they move into senior school. We hope to have interviews with parents

and students to organise subject selection and help students to make the best choices when it comes to their future. More information will be coming home about this soon. Year 7 have been very busy this term with their camp and from the comments from the staff and students, a great time was had by all. I have also had some positive reports about the presentation they attended on Cyber Bullying last week where students were reminded about being safe and responsible digital citizens. We are in the middle of the reporting period and I have been busy reading Year 7 reports. It is clear from the comments that there is a lot of quality teaching and learning activities happening in each HUB and that the students are responding positively to the opportunities they have been given. It is also very obvious that the teachers have been working hard to develop a strong rapport with the students and helping them to develop their skills in many different areas. Finally, as Year 12 start preparing for their Trial HSC Examinations early next term, I would encourage all students to take advantage of the Study Centre. They provide support in a range of ways; from helping students manage their time, organising study timetables or helping students find resources that aid their understanding of topics. It is a great source of support that is available to all.

We will be surveying the students about their future plans and inviting parents to the school to hear about possible options for students as they move into senior school.

This has been a busy term for year 8. With 8-360 interviews and exhibitions, there has been plenty of opportunities for students to show off their work. It’s a great experience to witness students reflecting on their learning and showing pride and enthusiasm for what they have created. The STEM market was incredibly competitive (not only for students – Mr Rumball and Mr Bailey seemed to be enjoying the competition too!) and there was a variety of products showing how students answered the driving question – “Can we make money with chemistry?” These products included bath bombs, honeycomb, candles and lip gloss. In QUEST, students reflected on their sense of belonging to their community and how they could improve their community. The ideas were varied – from an Ice Cream shop to an expansion of the Kurri Kurri Hospital emergency department. The presentation of these ideas was excellent – the model for the community garden was excellent. The Lifestyle exhibition centred around how students had evaluated different resources available to assist, support and inform people about different Mental Health concerns. Some of the resources created by students effectively outline coping strategies and identify where to seek further help. The 8-360 interviews were a positive experience for those who attended. Flipping a parent – teacher interview to place the student in the driving seat has created a process where the responsibility for learning sits where it needs to be – with the student. They are so articulate and proud of their work, and honest about where they have not completed the work at the level of which they are capable. Next term, these interviews will be a requirement in the application process for placement in our Year 9 enrichment classes. More information about this process will be available after the holidays.I had the privilege of reading two incredible essays from Preliminary Ancient History students, Anja Atkinson and Emily Watson. They were to create a timeline of 3 cities which disappeared with sources, and an extended response of the archaeological methodologies utilised in the study of Ancient Alexandria. Congratulations girls, this work is fantastic!!! Have a fabulous and safe holiday everyone!!!

Year 7 Camp - Mrs King Year 7 AdviserOn Wednesday 23rd May fifty-six excited year 7 students boarded the bus for three days of adventure! Mangrove Mountain was our destination, and there awaited our trusty tour guys; Irish, Jake, Eddie, Pom Pom and Alex.No sooner had we arrived and students were quickly shown their rooms, split into their activity groups, fed lunch and then off to our first activities. Day one was rock climbing and raft building, which tested student’s teamwork, creativity and height phobias! There were some very interesting rafts built from tyres, logs and rope, which students raced across the dam. Whilst no raft crossed the finish line in one piece, the materials did keep the students who braved racing them afloat, even if they became makeshift kickboards. Evening soon fell on our first day at camp and a fun game of Commando against the teachers ensued. Here, student teams had to save hostages from deep within the bush without being caught in the teachers’ torch light. Although Miss Twyford and Mrs King put up a brave fight, the students won in the end and saved all of their friends from the teachers grasp. Pom Pom then told a very engaging campfire story about a bear and a moose and then students had supper and went to bed.Day two began bright and early! Morning activities were Challenge Ropes and Initiative Activities, followed by Abseiling and Archery in the afternoon. It was so rewarding on this day to see students begin to encourage each other outside of their friendship groups, which is one of

the goals that camp sets out to achieve. Students again pushed themselves out of their comfort zones, and they were encouraged by their friends, both new and old.Challenge Night began with a rousing rendition of “Happy Birthday” for Ellie. Teams then battled a series of crazy challenges, such as carrying apples under their chins through an obstacle course, dropping a falling

pen and keeping a cup of water on their forehead whilst getting up from a lying position. Again, positivity and shouts of encouragement filled the room. The night ended with a Fire Show from Alex and Irish, and a scary campfire story. On our last day of camp, students were up even earlier to clean their rooms, with no help from Mum! After bags were packed and breakfast was down, students had two more challenges to face, and teachers were

also challenged to take part. A Flying Fox across the dam and the Giant Swing were our final two activities. Mr English bravely demonstrated how the Giant Swing was done and then students convinced Mrs King to face her fear of heights and have a go, although she only went half way up and screamed for the entire swing! Finally, it was time for one last photo and then the bus arrived to go home. Perhaps a little more exhausted and dirtier than our previous bus trip, but still excited to come home and tell our friends and family the exciting stories of camp!

It was so rewarding on this day to see students begin to

encourage each other outside of their friendship groups,

which is one of the goals that camp sets out to achieve.

MC28 - Ms McGrathIt has been a massive term for birthdays in MC28, Ben, Blair and Damien have all turned 18! Speed Careering - Mr McKinleyOn the 24th May, KKHS once again offered the spectacular Speed Careering event with an abundance of local industries offering a wonderful and straight from the heart insight into what it takes to take up a range of careers. Companies such as Crowne Plaza, Telstra, the Defence Force, the University of Newcastle and Komatsu were all there to give incredible information to our Year 10 students. Each group rotated through the guest speakers in 14minute slots allowing time for the presenter to speak volumes of the workforce and then opportunities existed for the students to ask questions. Every year this event is organised and facilitated with the assistance of our Community Liaison Officer, Heather Sutherland. Without her help and the support of local business, this event would not be as successful as it is. Speed Careering is just part of what we do to make our student’s school to work transition as smooth as possible and we are proud to say that the feedback from Year 10 is that the experience genuinely makes them understand the need to start thinking about the future now.

Mark Hughes inspires KKHSMark Hughes is as much a legend off the field as on, and recently he proved just that as he touched the lives of every student at Kurri Kurri High School. Mark, who grew up in Kurri, visited the school to support his Foundation, the Mark Hughes Foundation, which raises money to search for a cure and creates awareness about Brain Cancer. Mark came to fame as a Knight’s player but in 2013 his life changed forever as a few headaches and some blurred vision resulted in what was to become the fight of his life. Doctors found that he had a tumour the size of an avocado on his brain and what was to follow was surgery,

a series of intensive Radiation and then Chemotherapy. Today, Marks tumour thankfully has shown no size of regrowth and he lives a healthy life but the experience has taught him not to put things off any more. He says, if you want to do something, or achieve something do it now, don’t wait. The Mark Hughes Foundation has this month been working to raise funds to support patients undergoing treatment for brain cancer as well as researchers striving for a cure and Kurri Kurri High School got behind the cause. On Thursday, June 7 students wore a Beanie for Brain Cancer to help Mark’s cause which was all the more relevant thanks to his visit to the school.

Aboriginal Leadership Networking Day

Kurri Kurri High School JAECG Executive students ran a leadership-networking day with 13 local schools on Tuesday, 5th June. Students participated in activities including an Introduction to local Aboriginal Languages, Aboriginal Art and Aboriginal Traditional games. Students enjoyed a special lunch prepared by our Year 11 Food Tech students consisting of Mini Kanga Burgers with Apple Slaw and Mini Hot Dogs. A Big Thank you to Sharon Latter from the Bread Basket for donating our bread for the day also to Scott’s Meats for donating the meats.

Three members of KKHS staff participated in a 3 day course ,“Connecting to Country “, facilitated by our local AECG executives. It was an amazing experience that involved visiting sacred local Aboriginal sites, meeting and hearing stories from Elders whom have lived very traumatic lives and have done and continue to struggle with past atrocities that are still in effect, happening today. Staff then looked at ideas of what we could do to improve Aboriginal outcomes at school and in society. It was a very emotional and yet also uplifting and soul provoking experience and therefore we encourage other teachers and schools to participate in the program by contacting Stephanie Earl (AECG Secretary) at [email protected].

Is it Easy Being Green? Year 7 Hubs Investigate! - Ms Norberry HUB Teacher

The Year 7 Hubs have hurtled into their next project investigating the essential question “Is it easy being green?” The students have investigat-ed a number of geographical and scientific pieces of evidence as they looked into the issue, from climate charts to the water cycle. One thing is for

certain - science is the driving force behind this topic. Why should we care about the state of the environment? How can we take steps to minimise our negative impacts? By learning about the natural world, we’ve started to gain a sense of empathy for our global community, including the plants and animals that contribute to each ecosystem. Some of the students were shocked and appalled by the impact we are having on marine life after watching the documentary ‘A Plastic Ocean’, and they used text analysis skills to examine the ways in which the director was trying to persuade us. By figuring out how the world works, we’ve been able to see how we can intervene when things stop working! We were inspired by a visit from Dave of Feedback Organic Recovery, who talked us through composting and sustainable gardening. He showed off a number of interesting garden designs that utilised recycled materials, and let us have a go at some of his farming tools. We’ve started conducting a number of science experiments regarding the growth of plants in order to better understand how we can grow our own food. Our end goal? Design a small garden of our own using recycled materials. To do this, we need to learn the measurement skills needed to manufacture a variety of garden shapes and sizes. In the end, we hope to gain some practical skills that will help us live more sustainably on a day to day basis.

One thing is for certain - science is the driving force behind this topic.

Wellbeing is a very busy space at KKHS, as we aim to provide valuable real world learning opportunities for young people navigating the turbulent adolescent years. Here is a snapshot of some of the recent programs students have participated in.Love Bites:Year 10 students have recently been involved in a wellbeing program called “Love Bites”, which educates young people about sexual and domestic abuse. The program has been run over a period of 3 weeks to ensure small group sizes for greater effectiveness. Students have been leaving a “legacy” project in the shape of various posters and/or contribu-tions to a rap song facilitated by a local DJ and Music Producer. The Gathering:Year 12 students participated in “The Gathering”, a drug and alcohol education program. Using some very realistic props to represent standard drinks, we trust that Year 12 took home some important messages as they edge closer and closer to adulthood.

The Cyber Bully:On Thursday June 14 our Year 7 students had the wonderful opportunity to view a play called “The Cyber Bully” in the Hall. This is a very relevant topic for our youngest students of KKHS, which has hopefully left a lasting impression about appropriate online behaviour.Year 7 2019 Transition Day 1:On Thursday June 7 KKHS held our first orientation day for the incoming Year 7’s of 2019. The day featured sessions about bullying, Rock and Water and grit, led by some of our wonderful staff. Many thanks to our new Year Advisor Mr Sam Rumball, HT Stage 4 Ms Lisa Scobie, Relieving Principal Mr Alan Hope and presenters Mr Scott Berry, Mr Peter Asvestas and Ms Karen Phillips. Thank you also to Ms Kim Knox and her hospitality class for cooking a wonderful BBQ lunch. Many thanks to all our wonderful presenters and community organisa-tions that have contributed to these events, and to Ms Michelle Weir for putting these in place at the end of 2017.

This term Year 8 students have been exploring the topic “Let’s Get Physical”. Students have been investigating the benefits of physical activity on the dimensions of health as well as the Health Related components of fitness. Students have even participated in Fitness Testing, HITT sessions and fitness games. Our project this term will involve students designing an outdoor gym for our school. We look forward to our presentation next week with Cessnock Council’s Strategic Planner who is coming to talk to the students about all things associated with Outdoor Gym design.Integrated sport has seen the students participate in a HUB Basketball round robin competition with students beginning to take more ownership of their learning by developing round robin draws, referring, points scoring and gathering statistics.

Year 8 Hook Day - Mrs Ferguson HUB TeacherOur year 8 students were treated to a ‘hook day’ in week 4 to introduce them in a real world manner and get them excited about QUEST’s new topic about Indigenous contact and colonisation. The students rotated throughout different activities exploring traditional Indigenous culture. Some of the wonderful activities available included Indigenous games ran by Mr Asvestas’ SLR class, traditional Aboriginal language classes led by Mrs L’Green and providing a taste of traditional cuisine (kangaroo) for all the students to enjoy. Emily Lloyd, a talented local artist and former KKHS student with strong ties to the local indigenous community, also joined our team to inspire and encourage the year 8 HUBS students. Emily detailed the traditional nature of indigenous art and inspired the participants to engage in an artistic and creative experience. Students from each HUB were encouraged to contribute to a collaborative indigenous artwork, with some incredible results. These inspirational canvas’s will be displayed in the HUB rooms, giving the students a sense of ownership of their space, as well as enhancing overall understanding of the indigenous unit of work. It was a wonderful day that saw all students thoroughly enjoy themselves and become excited about what was to come in QUEST.

CAPAL News - Ms Dunlevie HT CAPALDuring term two students were provided with a range of wonderful opportunities and experiences to enhance their learning and link it to the real world. Brett Whiteley Studio and ArtexpressEarlier this year, Year 12, 11 and 10 Visual Arts students had the opportunity to visit the studio of renowned Australian artist Brett Whitely. The Brett Whiteley Studio, located in Surry Hills, offered students a unique insight into the artist’s life, passion, artistic journey and prolific body of work. Students explored Whiteley’s creative processes and drew inspiration directly from his artworks that adorned the studio space. The students’ experience at the studio allowed them to immerse themselves in works we had recently studied in class, where Whiteley’s work has left a legacy for us all to enjoy. After our visit to Brett Whiteley’s Studio, we then stopped by the NSW Art Gallery to attend the Artexpress exhibition. Artexpress is an annual exhibition featuring a selection of outstanding student artworks developed for the artmaking component of the HSC examination in Visual Arts in NSW. The visit gave the students the opportunity to see top HSC artworks and process diaries first hand, gather ideas and inspiration. Students saw a broad range of approaches and expressive forms, including ceramics, collection of works, documented forms, drawing, graphic design, painting, photomedia, printmaking, sculpture, textiles and fibre, and time-based forms. Students returned very inspired and excited to continue with their own artmaking.

CAPAL CONT’D...

Dobell Drawing SchoolFollowing on from our Term 1 newsletter, Chelsea White and Zane Andrews were 2 of the 75, Year 11 students selected from across the state to attend the Dobell Drawing School at the National Art School in Darlinghurst, Sydney. Students had submitted their best artworks in the hope of being able to attend the 5-day intensive drawing workshop during the school holidays.During their time at the workshop they selected and were placed into one of five classes, each focussing on a different aspect or style of drawing, Chelsea in ‘Portrait Drawing’ and Zane in ‘Drawing the Nude’. Throughout the five days, students were assisted by one of the school’s tutors to produce a final work for the exhibition held on the 19th, April. It was a thoroughly enjoyed, honourable experience for both of the students and they learnt skills that will further assist them in their bright future of art making.

U15s Soccer: The boys played St Phillips in Round 3 of the Bill Turner Cup, going down 4-10OPENS SOCCER: The boys were knocked out Round 3 suffering a loss to Whitebridge High. The Open girls made it to the Puma Cup Gala Day Rounds 3 and 4. Unfortunately, they went down in an understrength team.Congratulations to Brooke Kennedy who competed in the CHS Open Soccer carnival. The team were extremely dominant, placing 1st in their pool and moving through semi and quarter finals to play off for 3rd and 4th, ending in a devastating loss in a penalty shootout.

Futsal News - Mr HallKKHS has recently entered the Upper Hunter Futsal (indoor soccer) Championships with some excellent individual and team performances. We selected 3 boys teams with one in each division. The U14 Boys had 2 out of 3 wins and made their way to the final, however were unlucky against Maitland Grossmann, eventually going down 3-1. Some outstanding performances by Hayden Van Derdrift and Riley Dembeck. Our U16 Boys had a mixed day with a win, loss and draw and were bundled out in the Semi Final 5-0 by eventual champions Rutherford. Dusty Callaghan played every game for all 3 sides in goals and pulled off some outstanding saves. Also Lukas Straker dazzled many opposition teams with fast footwork and scored at least one excellent goal. The Open Boys were playing at their 4th championship in a row and knew a few tricks to round out the close games. Angus Lathan, Sam Whyburn, and Izak Straker laid the platform with Paul Gardner and Luke Whiting scoring the majority of the goals. They started the Grand Final slowly but eventually hit every crossbar and post to come back to 1-3 against a fast Muswellbrook unit. The girls outshone their opponents in an amazing display of teamwork and great passing. The U14 Girls, who are still learning the game lost 6-0 against Hunter River only to play them 2 hours later in the Grand Final! With the shock tactic of scooping the ball over the tallest opposition player, they surprisingly scored and then doubled their advantage... and held on to record a 3-2 victory to be crowned Upper Hunter Champions. The U16 Girls, featuring past Northern NSW representatives in Brooke Kennedy, Ainsley Childs, Maddie Bartlett and Goal Keeper, Emily Gordon started all games with a smile on their face and finished the same way. The score keepers lost track of who scored more out of Brooke and Ainsley, who kept the crowd entertained with their speed, finesse, power and ferocious tackling. On another note the U16 Girls were the only team in KKHS history to take on the other zone champions in St Pius, Wallsend, Whitebridge, West Wallsend, McKillip College, Tumbi Umbi HS and of course Maitland Grossmann at the Northern NSW State Championships and remain undefeated! The plays of the day included Lucy Bacon’s shot between the Goal Keepers legs to secure the Grand Final win, Brooke Kennedy’s ongoing foul trouble when jostling for the ball, Ainsley’s giggling battle with opposition friend Teagan Douglass, Sophia Bacon’s hardness testing of the wooden floorboards....ouch.... and Sophie Bartlett’s ability to shoot from anywhere on the court. THEY ARE THE 2018 NORTHERN NSW STATE CHAMPIONS after some 10 exhilarating games over two carnivals, congratulations to all of the players, parents and spectators on a fine showing from Kurri this year, our best ever to date !!
