HERRMANS® is a company based in Finland designing and manufacturing bicycle grips, lights, chain guards, reflectors and rim tapes. The expertise within the company helps us realize customer needs regarding special solutions and exclusive products, which are also appreciated by the end users – cyclists all over the world. HERRMANS® aims to offer the right solution to each and every customer. As a result, a large number of our manufactured products are tailored. In addition to developing products, HERRMANS® also places great emphasizes on offering customers flexible and reliable service and a competitive relation between price and quality.

We are continuously improving our performances while minimizing the impact of our operations and products on the environment. We utilize Six Sigma methodologies and are certified according to the ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 standards.

HISTORYThe Ostrobothnian coast in western Finland has a strong spirit of entrepreneurship and nursing, amongst others many businesses within the plastic sector. With five years’ experience in the sector Bernhard Herrmans, and wife Lisbeth, founded the Company on the 28th of April 1959, at just 26. They produced rim tapes at weekends on an extruder he had hired from one of the local plastic companies. He acquired his very first extruder at 9.35am on 2nd November 1966. The same year Herrmans started exporting to Sweden. In response to a request from Norway he also bought an injection-molding machine and started producing grips in 1969.

From a small room in the family home the business moved to an 80 square-metre house on their property in 1970. Two years later, the first production hall was built on the current HERRMANS® business premises in Sandsund, by Jakobstad. Reflectors for grip ends came into the picture and soon afterwards (in 1976) the company launched its first reflector, the Safety Wing. This orange lollipop-shaped reflector was a big success and exported in huge quantities to Germany in the late 1970s. That same year (1976) HERRMANS® began automating rim tape production and in 1977 the company hit the jackpot overtaking the market in the northern half of Europe with the price and quality combination for rim tapes.

Chain guards were added to the list of merchandise in 1982. After a slow start for spoke and rear reflectors in 1981, sales boomed in 1986 after Sweden made spoke reflectors compulsory on bikes. At the end of this boom Botnia Shipping, later Wicoria, bought the company from HERRMANS®. The company struggled with serious profitability problems 1987-90 causing a reduction in the labour force from just under 110 to around 45.

However, Herrmans knew that innovation was the way forward and did not hesitate to come up with new ideas. In 1989 HERRMANS® presented the first LED-based bicycle light in the world and in 1991 bicycle helmets were brought onto the market.

In 1992 the Herrmans NORDIC LIGHTS® division began selling lights to the heavy duty industry (i.e. mining machines), inspired by former managing director Lars Kronholm (1987-2003). The work lights demanded so much capital that the production of bicycle helmets was stopped in 1994 to allow for further investments. At the same time Waasan Vanne was acquired. Today, the heavy duty work lights of the NORDIC LIGHTS® division are an important part of HERRMANS®, operating in a global market. In the meantime, the HERRMANS® bicycle division operates in the whole of Europe with sales increasing in Asia.

In 2002 the operative management and two external shareholders bought the company; at the same time, Waasan Vanne was sold to another party.

– We are aware of the tough competition, but we firmly believe that with a strong position among OEMs and with the right design, price and flexibility to provide prompt shipping, our place in the market will remain secure, says company president Reijo Tiuraniemi.

The management’s acquisition accelerated the sales in both bicycle and work light divisions. Today, HERRMANS® is the leading rim tape, reflector and grip manufacturer in Europe. The company’s main focus is currently on bicycle lights and chain guards to maintain growth.

THE ERGONOMICS OF RIDING

GRIPSGrips are the first part of the bike the rider touches in the shop. They transmit the first feel of the bike to the consumer. After the saddle and the pedals, the grip is the third part of the bicycle which is in direct contact with the cyclist. The choice of grips is mainly a question of ergonomics, comfort and safety, with increasing emphasis on look and design. Besides fulfilling all European regulations the HERRMANS® grips are all PAH, LATEX and Natural Rubber-free. TPE (Kraton) grips are always Phthalate-free and the PVC grips are also available in Phthalate-free versions.

LIGHTSHERRMANS® has a long history with lights introducing the first LED-based bicycle light in the world as early as 1989. HERRMANS® also has extensive experience in developing and manufacturing work lights for the heavy duty industry (i.e. excavators and mining machines) on a global scale under the NORDIC LIGHTS® brand. Unique capabilities are underlined further by a competent team of engineers with expertise in optics, electronics and material properties – along with the company’s own extensive state-of-the-art light laboratory. REFLECTORSBe visible. Traffic moves fast – also in the dark. At night a cyclist is as dark as the brick wall along the road. When riding your bicycle at dusk or after dark, reflectors are priority number one to be seen by cars and trucks on the road. HERRMANS® is the leading reflector manufacturer in Europe. Specialized in producing approved reflectors in accordance with the many different European homologations, even the demanding E IV A. The product range covers spoke reflectors, front reflectors and rear reflectors. Thanks to many different bracket options these reflectors fit all types of bicycle.

REFLECTIONS

Front reflectors available in different versions to cover all European countries. All offered front reflector models are approved in all European countries.

Rear reflectors available in different versions to cover all European countries. BR-5, BR-7 and BR-8 rear reflector models are approved in all European countries. BR-12 covers Germany, France, Switzerland, Austria, Holland, Denmark and Norway plus southern Europe. Please bear in mind that two rear reflectors are required in Germany, Switzerland and Austria.

Spoke reflectors available in different versions to cover all European countries. ER-11 Yellow covers all Nordic countries, Benelux and France plus southern Europe. ER-11 Clear covers the United Kingdom. ER-8P covers Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Holland, Denmark and Norway plus southern Europe. Please bear in mind that two spoke reflectors per wheel are required in Germany, Switzerland and Austria.

RIM TAPESHERRMANS® is the leading European rim tape manufacturer. We supply four different materials for rim tapes for different pressure requirements.

HERRMANS® introduces the HPP (yellow) rim tape based upon the new Wing Technology (W-Tech). The new rim tape profile is very flexible and makes it easier to mount the rim tape on the rim, so that it is centered and smoothly follows the rim profile. At the same time the rim tape does not lose its critical rigidness, giving a high pressure resistance. HPP is made out of polyurethane, extremely light and can stand a max pressure of 8 bars or 116 psi.

The HPR (red) from a base of polypropylene combines strength and flexibility with a max. pressure of 10 bars or 145 psi. The recommended high-end choice for road racing and MTB. The HPS (yellow) from polyurethane is extremely light and can stand a max. pressure of 8 bars or 116 psi. Finally, HPM (blue) from PVC has been developed for double-walled rims with a max. pressure of 6 bars or 87 psi.

ACCESSORIESAlmost invisible to the eye but still so crucial for your bike. As a specialist in bicycle components and injection-molding HERRMANS® produces a number of small components. Handlebar end plugs, cable holders, cable guides, cable stoppers, kick stand covers, different fittings and brackets are all part of the program. We also have our own tool workshop where we can construct our own tools. Our machinery allows us also to produce triple component parts. Apart from our own components we also produce tailored solutions and accessories for our customers.

FEATHER TECHNOLOGY. HERRMANS® introduces a new grip family: gribbo. The family consists of adjustable Endorfin and Adrenalin in triple density (3D) as well as OXY in dual density (DD). The 3D grips utilize the HERRMANS® new Feather technology (F-Tech), inspired by the evolution and structure of feathers. The result of the concept is strong, flexible and dynamic – a highly ergonomic grip with maximized shock absorption.

For increased comfort and performance we offer the Dual Density (DD) grips. There are also adjustable versions of the grips. Finally, HERRMANS® has introduced a Triple Density (3D) range. FUNCTIONAL DESIGN. A design chain guard both fulfils a function and enhances the look of the bicycle. The HERRMANS® chain guard range fits various bikes and crank sets. The chain guards are made of durable, flexible reinforced plastic – made to endure the hot summers of southern Europe and the cold winters of Scandinavia. The plastic is also UV-resistant. Chain guards are available for 33, 38, 42–44, 46 and 48 teeth chain wheels as well as for single and triple chain wheels. Versions are also available with a Front Derailleur opening. The latest chain guard family – Slyde – is adjustable with a range of 325–440 mm. The B-Slyde is Bosch E-bike compatible. The chain guards are available in several colour combinations. Customized colours by request on a case-to-case basis.

ES

RIM TAPESRIM TAPES YOU CAN TRUST. HERRMANS® is the leading European rim tape manufacturer. In the HERRMANS® range you can find rim tapes suitable for all types of spoke wheel, bicycle, motorcycle and moped wheels, fulfilling several levels of pressure requirements. The rim tapes have upgraded pinch resistance for long bike trips. The rim tapes are available with valve holes for rims with the American valve (Schrader valve) 9mm or the Presta valve 7mm.

HERRMANS® introduces the HPP (yellow) rim tape based upon the new Wing Technology (W-Tech). The new rim tape profile is very flexible and makes it easier to mount the rim tape on the rim, so that it is centered and smoothly follows the rim profile. At the same time the rim tape does not lose its critical rigidness, giving a high pressure resistance. HPP is made out of polyurethane, extremely light and can stand a max pressure of 8 bars or 116 psi.

In addition to the new HPP we supply three other materials for rim tapes for different pressure requirements. HPM (blue) made from PVC has been developed for double-walled rims with a max. pressure of 6 bars or 87 psi. The HPS (yellow) made from polyurethane is extremely light and can stand a max. pressure of 8 bars or 116 psi. Finally, the HPR (red) from a base of polypropylene combines strength and flexibility with a max. pressure of 10 bars or 145 psi. The recommended high-end choice for road racing and MTB.

Too stiff rim tapes will not follow the U-shaped rim profile, making a correct assembly of the rim tape, and tire, more difficult.

With too loose rim tapes the pressure will push down the rim tape into the spoke holes, reducing the protective life span of the rim tape.
