“Hierbyhalf-tweeDonderdagoggendhethymy weer wakker geklop.

bygevoeg. “Die fynbos is beeldskoon, maarwaar daar grasse rondom die huise was, wasdie huise meestal veilig.”

Penny Davidson, nog ’n inwoner, was saammet haar man by Camelot-restaurant toe hul-le van die brand hoor.

Sowat 220 hektaar fynbos is ver-woes.

Mother in stable conditionafter setalightby sonJANINE VAN DER RIET

The mother who was attackedand set alight by her 19-year-oldson on Tuesday 15 July in theirVoëlklip home, is still in a seri-ous but stable condition at Ty-gerberg Hospital.

The son had also attacked hisgrandmother with a hammer onthesameevening, butshehassincebeen discharged from hospital.Hermanus Times is aware of the

identity of the victims, but has de-cided to honour their request notto be identified.Themother is still heavily band-

aged and needs medical care for atleast another three to six weeks. The grandmother is at homeand

friends say “she is a very brave la-dy and doing alright under the cir-cumstances.“She is getting a lot of love and

support from neighbours and resi-dents in Hermanus.”The saddest part of the attack on

the mother and grandmother, sayfamily friends, is that the motheris a wonderful, inspiring womanand author of multiple books whodedicates her time and energy tohelping victims of trauma and vio-lence in South Africa and abroad. She offers courses and retreats

and is a well-known inspirationalspeaker, teacher and facilitator. In the books she has written and

themotivationalcoursesshefacili-tates, she tells the reader and audi-ence of the violence she has had to

face in her life, from an abusivemarriage to many violent crimes. These include themurder of her

father and assault of hermother ina farm attack as well as an attackand stoning on her in a mass riotthat spun out of control. In a recent interview with the

Hermanus Times before a motiva-tional talk she held in Kleinmond, she said: “Our biggest issue is thefear of going through these events.Iwillbespeakingonhowtogetpastthe fear of having something hap-

pen to you and whether it is possi-ble to prevent it. When we live infear, our lives become limited.”She has also written a number

of e-books which have been down-loaded more than 1 600 times.Her 19-year-old sonwas arrested

on the night of the attack and ap-peared in the Hermanus Magis-trate’s Court on Friday 18 July. The case was remanded until 28

July for a bail hearing. The investigating officerwill op-

pose bail.

Department’s lease agreement not working out for Elgin farmworkersANNETTE THERON

The families of 27 permanent work-ers on the farmProtea outsideElginsaythey faceanuncertain futurebe-cause of a deal that is not workingout as it was planned.Since the beginning of the year

the workers have been without wa-ter for twomonths,withoutelectric-ity for twomore, andwithoutwagesbetween April and 4 July. They saythey mostly live from donations byshops, churchesandcharity organi-sations such as theACVVandElginRound Table, on this 74 hectare ap-ple and plum farm.According to Vuyani Nkasayi,

head of communications at the De-partmentofRuralDevelopmentandLand Reform of the Western Cape, the department acquired the farmfrom a private owner in June last

year for R11,6 million for the farmitself, andanotherR1million for themachinery and equipment. The department entered into a

lease agreement with two co-les-sees, who Nkasayi says have manyyears experience in the farmingsec-tor.Nkasayi emphasises that the deal

is not a BEE initiative. “The leaseworks as such; if there are peopleinterested in farming, then they ap-ply and they are kept on the data-baseof thedepartmentandwhenweacquire a farm, we then interviewthe applicants and successful appli-cants get a lease agreement.”But, said Nkasayi, the farm has

not generated income of late, andthe money the department hadaimed to raise by November lastyear to “keep the farm running”,has not been secured to date.

Nkasayi said the department isaware of the situation on the farm.“One of the reasons people did notget paid was because the farm didnot generate any money to paythem.”They are all permanent workers,

with families to support,” said Me-kie Plato, ward councillor for Pro-tea, about the 27 affected workers.Plato expressed concernabout theirfuture because they were apparent-ly asked to go on unpaid leave from23 June to 9 July.

Edward van Niekerk, one of thetwo lessees whowas present at a re-centhand-overof foodparcelsonthefarm, was contacted to give clarityand more detailed information onthe terms of the lease agreement, but did not want to comment.Upon a question about the future

of the farmanditsworkers,Nkasayisaidthedepartmentwill“communi-cate that when we are ready”.“We don’t know where we stand

and we are very unhappy with thecurrentsituationandwedon’tknowwhat the future holds for us,” oneof the farmworkers said yesterday.“Something has to be done here; wereceive absolutely no benefits.“We have spoken amongst our-

selves and believe that governmentshould give us part of the shares ofthe farmaswe are the onesworkingthe land.”

Become the changeThere are many advantages to living ina small town. Although everyone mostlyknows everybody’s business, like nobody’s business, there is also the senseof belonging that comes along with it.Unfortunately the reality is that behind

closed doors everyone still has their ownskeletons. According to the 2011 Census, a total of 16% of the Overstrandpopulation has no annual income.Withthese statistics comes incredible hardship for some families.Poverty and hardship has a major in

fluenceonaperson.Andwhen someonewhom we thought we knew well, takeshis or her own life, we can only wonderabout the reasons behind it.This is not only true for those without

any income, butalso the fatherormotherwho struggles to provide for their ownfamily. The reasons behind suicide is mostly

adarkly kept secret, but ifwecouldmakean effort to look around and really seeour neighbours, friends and acquaintances going through a hard time, wecould become the difference between alife and death decision.

No decline in whale numbersIn response to Fanie de Jager’s letter“Waarheen is al die walvisse” (HT 17/07),I can say that as a proud Hermanian andwhale lover, I have diligently photo-graphed andmonitoredwhales from land, seaandair, andcan tell you therehasbeenno decline in the numbers to Hermanus(Walker Bay).I personally counted 25 whales from

Sievers Punt on 15 July. The bay has had record sightings of

humpback whales this season (June/Ju-ly).To add to my sightings, I photographed

threemother/calf pairings on 14 July, theearliest I’ve ever seen calves in the bayfrom land.As for the whale boats, get off your butt

and go and enjoy a trip to see whales atclose quarters. The boats, by law, are allowed to ap-

proach to 50 metres. Because of their(whales) inquisitive nature, they ap-proach the boats almost every time, to

within touching distance. The southern right whale population is

increasing every year (approximately7 000 to the SA coastline in 2013, out of atotal population of approximately 16 000).Personally, I believe Walker Bay has a

capacity to contain 250 whales at peaktimes (Sep/Oct).Inmy short 10 yearsmonitoring whales

in Walker Bay, capacity has always beenreached.Whale watching in Hermanus, De Kel-

ders, Pearly beach, and De Hoop any timein the season is fantastic, Tamatie Bankincluded.I didn’t see Mr De Jager braaing on a

beautifulmidJunemorningwhen Iphoto-graphed a southern right in the kelp anda breaching humpie, all from the veryTamatie Bank.

‘Quiet diplomacy’ works best at night shelterI am responding to the “Anonymous” SMSpublished in HT 10 July, with regard to theircomments that tik/dagga and alcohol are be-ing used in the night shelter and also of theso-called intimidation of anyone who lays acomplaint with the on duty supervisor.Have newcomers to the shelter used tik/

dagga and smuggled alcohol into the shelterin the past? The answer is “yes”. Was it al-lowed to continue? The answer is a resound-ing “no”. I have (when an incident of this na-ture has occurred) confronted the personsconcerned and quietly informed them if theincident occursagain, notonlywill the super-visor be informedbut in the case of tik/dagga,the Hermanus SAPS will be informed. Thismethod of “quiet diplomacy” has been a tre-mendous success and the incident has neverbeenrepeatedagain.Youmaythink,“whynotreport it to the onduty supervisor immediate-ly?” The reason is twofold. The majority ofhomeless people have a deep mistrust of anyauthoritarian organisation and absolutelynothing would be achieved by having themremoved from the shelter. Instead they aremade aware of the future consequences of theaction. This method has only failed on two or

three occasions and when reported to the su-pervisor immediate action has been takenthroughatemporarysuspensionor(asanony-mous can testify to) a permanent banningfrom the shelter, and in some cases the policehave been called to evict the individual con-cerned.For “anonymous” to make the accusation,

is malicious in the extreme and is just an at-tempt by “anonymous” to cause maximumtrouble for the shelter because they are per-manently banned.Daily you can see in the shelter themarked

improvement and behaviour of the inhabit-antswho decided to clean the area around thesupervisor’s caravan and the entrance of theshelter which indicates a certain pride thatthey take in the place where they live.In conclusion, I would just like to thank, on

behalf of all shelter inhabitants, the commit-tee who work tirelessly to help the homelesspeople and also those extremely good peoplewho bring food every night to the shelter attheir own expense in sometimes reallymiser-able weather. They don’t just talk the talk, they walk the walk. God bless you all.

Watch whales from therocksShortly after we bought our house on the clifftops at De Kelders in 1989, wewere privilegedto watch a whale give birth just off the rocksright in front of us.At that time 80 to 100whales in the baywere

common, but sincemovinghere permanentlyin 2000, we have witnessed increasing incur-sions ofwhalewatching boats into their terri-tory.Is it really coincidental that this develop-

ment has been accompanied by a steady de-cline in our seasonal visitors? On Monday 14 July two whale watching

boats were to be seen within the breaker linein front of the Coffee On the Rocks restaurantand that night seven boats were fishing wellinside the bay, extremely close to The Plaat. It seems these boats are justified because

theyearnmoneyfor theirownersandtheareaand as we all know, everybody needs moneynow – irrespective of the co-lateral costs forthe future.Forget the boats! To get up “real close” to

the whales and get a far better view, you canstandontherocks in frontofourhouse, wherethewhalescomeinsocloseyoucouldhit themwith a ping pong ball. But of course, you can’t charge people for

standing on the rocks, so this non-intrusiveoption does not have any appeal for thewhaletour operators.Any animal or human mother will protect

her young and will not tolerate anything get-ting close and whales are surely no different. If these boats are allowed to trespass close

to the cliffs, the whales’ nursery, the whaleswill go, just like the rhino – so what?

Stop stagnation, get creative juices flowing to tacklejobs, housing, transport, water, parking, tourism

The loss of large projects recently has beencostly to Hermanus, causing stagnation andloss of jobs and money circulation. Here isfood for thought, starting with Stanford.Stanford – Add a mini waterfront to this

already beautiful and interesting old-schooltown. From the Stanford waterfront have aferryrunningintheKleinriviertoMaanskyn-baai.Thewell-elevatedgroundsatMaanskyn-baai can become a state-of-the-art sports com-plex and sports collegewith awaterfrontwitha sports bar and restaurant (no malls).Maanskynbaai could offer world-class

rowing competitions (maybe a Cambridge,Oxford typeof racebetween the Ikeys andMa-ties for a start from Stanford to Hermanus/Maanskynbaai), yachting, indoor swimmingand maybe world sevens rugby one day.Soccer, cricket, bowls, driving range, ath-

letic fields or a triathlon by pedalling fromGansbaai to Stanford; rowing to Maanskyn-baai; and running to Hermanus. Add chaletson thewaters edge ofMaanskynbaai or a For-mula 1 typehotel for athletes.Aproject of thisnature can draw people to Hermanus duringthe winter months also and get Hermanusproperly on to the international arena.DeMond – build a hotel catering for sports-

menandothers, and top-classhomes,not clus-ters.Hermanus – close down a portion of the

main road in the CBD from Lemm’s cornertoDirkieUys street. Remove thevendor stallsand place new smaller ones in the centre ofthe main road for the current vendors. Erectother stalls of interest and create a SouthernAfrican theme with each stall displaying thehistory of a Southern African country for thetourists to read.Keep Lemm’s Corner for the history of

Hermanus and add old farming equipmentand a boatwith history on display. Allow peo-ple to jam and mime etc. for entertainment.Add lights and potted trees and plants and

alsohavea freeWiFizone.NameitTheWhaleWalk. Keep the market parking open. Bringback the old wow view it once had, and at thesame time creating additional parking andfreedomtowalk to shops.OpenHarbourRoadto two-way trafficwith a very low speed limit.Taxi rank – Change the current under-uti-

lised parking in front of the taxi rank to amu-nicipal garden.Mount Pleasant – The first impression is

always the lasting one. Mount Pleasant andsurrounds, improve to garden villages.Sandbaai - TheWhale CoastMall willmost

certainly help to put the right business in theright place improving on the shortage of cer-tain shops and jobs and also having to shopacross the mountain.Hawston should be protected from losing

its heritage, but at the same time improvingit for tourism. With growth and people’s livesimprovingnewbusinesswillmoveawayfromthe CBD and a well-integrated affordable gar-den village housing project could be built be-tweenHawston andFisherhaven. A good-sizeshopping centre and garage will be neededand possibly a fish or abalone farm for jobs.Municipal workshops and stores – Our

municipalityshouldalsocombine theirwork-shops and stores alike which are widespreadto Afdaks (opposite Fisherhaven) to free upspace in town. Afdaks could also serve theshort falls for light industrial areas.Botrivier is a junction. It will be ideal for

light andheavy industries, abattoir, cold stor-age for distribution and also skills develop-ment colleges which could serve all the sur-roundingtownsandpeople.TheBotrivierrailline could see the return of a passenger trainfrom Cape Town bringing tourists and visi-tors to the Overstrand area.Myciti type busses between Rooi Els, Bot-

rivier andGansbaaiwill help to get thepeopletoworkand to theshops.Dayvisitorsandpeo-ple who need to get to hospitals and clinicswill be more connected between towns. Also, have a special tourist bus. The bus

terminal can be at Afdaks or Botrivier.Water issues – Separate the fresh water

and seawater by building awall in the lagoonfromPrawnFlats toMaanskynbaai.Pumpthesludge to Maanskynbaai as filling and havea big fresh water storage dam getting the wa-ter from the mountain.Hermanus does not only have a shortage of

water, but also a shortage of funds. It has beensaid for years that the old municipal dumpatthebirdsanctuaryisoneof thecontributingfactors to unsafe water in the lagoon.Walker Bay nature reserve area – Elec-

tricity, wind turbines in the Walker Bay na-ture reserve area. A sewerage plant in thereserve with sewerage pipes running in thelagoontoDeMond.Thepossibilities fora lightaircraft airfield and making use of a ferryfrom the reserve toPrawnFlats for the travel-lers or a connection bridge.Let’s stop stagnation. It might help to get

the Habonim and Schulphoek projects backon track to stop the downward spiral.

Shift in distributiontrends of whalesMr De Jager’s observations (HT, 17 July)agreebroadlywith trends thathavebeenseenfrom the annual helicopter surveys of thecoastline between Nature’s Valley and Mui-zenberg that have been carried out since 1979,latterly by the Mammal Research Institute(MRI) of the University of Pretoria. The numbers of unaccompanied whales

(that is, not cow-calf pairs) seen on these sur-veys have declined since 2009, to about halfof the levels seen from 2000 – 2009, whereas

the numbers of cow-calf pairs has continuedto increase at the same rate as before (manyof which occur off De Hoop, as Mr De Jagerstates).Thereasons for this trendareunknown, but

since2003, 20 rightwhales thatwereprevious-lyphotographedinSouthAfricanwatershavebeen sighted off Namibia (10 since 2008), sothere seems to have been a shift in distribu-tion of some unaccompanied whales to areasthat they once occupied over 200 years ago.

Daarwas ’npaarwarmerwinters in ’nrywatveral

Overstranders bederf het. Dit moet mens glo as dieomvattende klimaatsverandering buite rekeninggelaat word.

Although spring is around the corner, there is still somevery cold and wet weather heading towards the Over-strand in the comingweek.More than 22 mm rain is fore-cast for the weekend.

SuicidesandpovertyalarmingJANINE VAN DER RIET

Poverty remains one of the mainreasons for people giving up onlife, says Santie Oelofsen fromthewelfare organisation Badisa.

“Peoplearedesperateandhavenomore options or hope regardingwork, food, money and accommoda-tion,” says Oelofsen. In the latest incident a 47-year-old

man fromNorthcliff committed sui-cide on Wednesday 16 July.Thepolicewerecalled to thescene

and on arrival found that he hadcommitted suicide by hanging him-self. His girlfriend came home afterwork at around 16:45 and found himalready dead on the scene.Oelofsen says Badisa has seen a

dramatic increase in attempted sui-cide cases, especially under the eld-erly and teenagers in the past fewmonths, also an increase in thenumber of teenagers looking forhelp and counselling.Leon Brand from EMR ambu-

lance services says in the last fewyears there has been a tremendousincrease in the number of suicides. He says in the recent past most sui-cides have occurred inmiddle-classhomes.“Even though some months are

quieter, thenumberof incidents arestill alarming.”According to Lieutenant Fadila

September from the Hermanus Po-lice, there hasnot been a significantincrease in the number of suicidesin the pastmonth. “However, in the

past twoyearsor so, suicideandsui-cide attempts have increased signif-icantly.”According to the police and wel-

fare organisations, poverty and de-pression are spreading intomiddle-class areas at an alarming rateSoliMadikane, director of the De-

Profile:DerekWellsThere is nothing quite as exhilarating as around of golf on the soft, verdant fairways ofHermanus Golf Club, amagnificent stretch ofland between mountain and sea, of gentleslopes, sparkling ponds and prolific birdlife –all surrounded by a wide variety of splendidfynbos.Withinourgroup, collectivelyknownas the

Grysbokke, are some fascinating characters. One such is the evergreen Derek Wells. Here is a man of advanced years (89), who

still has a zest for life. Whether playing golforchattingabouthisbelovedwife,hisenthusi-asm is infectious. He has beenmarried to Lor-na for 61 years and lovingly refers to her asSweetness.Derek still has a competitive drive that

brings an edge to his game and he will cheerevery good shot that his partner makes. He wears an automatic wind Omega watch

that has never been opened or repaired.Whatmakes this remarkable is that his father pre-sented it to him on the occasion of his gradua-tion – in 1947. He attended the University ofCape Town, where he obtained a BSc in CivilEngineering.Every day he caught a bus from Three An-

chor Bay to the main station, then the traintoRosebankand thenwalked toUCT.Becauseof this schedule, sport at UCT was not practi-cal, so young Derek joined Hamiltons, wherehe played lock forward, initially for the u. 19teamsof1943/44andlaterfortheseniorHamil-ton team. Amongst his friends were many re-vered names in our rugby annals – such asSalty du Randt, Francis Melish (captain ofHamiltons), the Koch brothers and GerryBrand.Derek’s love for Hermanus began in 1953

when he spent his honeymoon at TheMarineHotel. In his words “marrying Sweetness wasthe best thing I ever did”.And Derek was quite the ‘boytjie’! His four

childrenwere all born during school holidays– as Lorna was a teacher.Hisworking career as a road engineer, took

him toplaces likeCapeTown,GeorgeandTul-bagh, where he and Lorna still vividly recall

the devastating earthquake of 1969. Throughthis tragedy they experienced first hand thelove and sacrifice of a community standing to-gether.In themid 1980sDerek retired toHermanus

where they settled into their holiday home inVoëlklip, where they still live today.Derekhasbeenveryactiveat theHermanus

Golf Club, first as captain and later as clubpresident. His knowledge of drainage systemsproved invaluable. HGC, like many others, was formanyyears run onnon-business prin-ciples and as a result the club went throughdifficult financial and often turbulent times.Thesuccessof thecurrentworldclassHGC,

with its superb 27 hole layout, protected envi-ronmentalareas,housingestatesandoutrightownership of the land onwhich the course ex-its, has much to do with the fortitude and vi-sion of men like Derek Wells, Hannes Kleyn-hans, Manie Bekker and other committeemembers.Through the trials and tribulations of his 89

years, playingcompetitivesportwithonlyoneeye, and fighting for his life throughmany op-erations,Derek is theultimatesurvivor–withan indomitable spirit and an unmatched loveof life, his wife and family and golf.I treasure Derek’s friendship. – CLYDE

wringkrag teen 2 000 rpm vrystelnie.

gou staatmakerstatus gaan ver-werf?Die 1.6 Quest wat ons getoets het,

sal dienuweeienaarR174 900uit diesak jaag.DieoutomatieseweergaweR198 900 en die windmaker PlusR197 900.Die Quest word gedek deur ’n

Ford is set to introducenewrangeof carsFord is bringing 25 new vehiclestoMiddleEast andAfricaby2016.

Responsible for Middle East andAfrica, responsible for 67 markets,Ford’s established structures aim tosupport growth in the region and oneFord strategy will see a growing line-upofneworrefreshedvehiclesenter-ing the market.

Thus Ford announced that it isbringing 25 new vehicles to MiddleEast and African markets by 2016, aspartof itsaggressiveexpansionplansin its newest business unit, MiddleEast and Africa (MEA). Spanningfrom Saudi Arabia to South Africa, and Nigeria to Kenya, Ford’s new

MEAunit iscomprisedof67markets.“Ford is bringing a full family of

safe, high quality, fuel-efficient andfun-to-drive cars, trucks and SUVs tocustomers throughout the MiddleEast and Africa region.

MEA is the final frontier for globalgrowth in the auto industry andthanks to the power of our One Fordplan, weareabletooffervehiclesherethat our customers want and value,”said Jim Benintende, president, FordMiddle East and Africa.

Vehicle sales in the MEA are ex-pected to grow by 40 percent by theend of the decade to 5,5 million vehi-cles. Ford is putting the right struc-tures and people in place in order to

bringafullfamilyofvehiclesthatcus-tomers will want, to the region.

Ford’s MEA business unit under-scoresFord’scommitmenttocustom-ers in a region where Ford and Lin-coln sales grew up to 60 percent in thepast four years. To take advantage ofgrowth opportunities, Ford has com-bined the four regions of North Afri-ca, Sub-Saharan Africa, South AfricaandtheMiddleEastintoasinglebusi-ness unit, with all sales, share and fi-nancial reporting consolidated forthe 67 Ford markets.

ThenewFordMiddleEastandAfri-ca operation - Ford’s fifth global busi-nessunit - isheadquarteredinDubai.

“TheMiddleEastandAfricaregion

is vast and is comprised of very di-verse markets with different politi-cal, cultural and economic environ-ments.

In order to best support the regionit has been imperative that we estab-lisharobustoperationwithadedicat-ed focus and clear understanding ofthe unique conditions and customerneeds in these markets,” Benintendesaid. To attain that dedicated focusand support the diversity of the mar-kets, Middle East and Africa is nowbeing managed in two sub-regions -South Africa and Sub-Saharan Afri-ca, and the Middle East and North Af-rica. While regional operations areheadquartered in Dubai, Ford main-

tains regional offices in both SouthAfrica and Dubai.

“The new business unit will givethe region the focus it deserves andhelp spearhead Ford’s continuedgrowth in emerging markets. Africais one of the youngest markets in theworld, and there is an opportunity toprovide an affordable product for thepeople of the continent,” he contin-ued.

Benintende emphasised that prior-itiesincludesupportingFord’sdealernetwork throughout the Middle EastandAfricatoservicecustomerneeds.Ford currently sells about 200 000 ve-hicles a year throughout the MiddleEast and Africa region.
