ARRESTED: Due to the actions of acouple camping at Onrus CaravanPark, a poacher at Davies Pool wascaught redhanded. Three officialsfrom the Department of Fisheries arrested the poacher and handed himover to the Hermanus Police.Erge chaosmet
SandbaaiverkeerJANHENDRIK COETZER
verkeersopeenhoping waar Bergsigstraaten Hoofstraat mekaar ontmoet (FOTO).Volgens Curro Hermanus se skoolhoof,
HennieMentz, is hierdie probleemreeds byOverstrand-munisipaliteit aanhangig ge-maak.“Baie kinders daag laat op vir skool as ge-
volg daarvan.

AN INHUMANE EXISTENCE DAY AFTER DAYWild animals used in circuses and other travelling acts are routinely subjected to months on the road confined in
small, barren cages or in chains. These animals then demonstrates stereotypic and abnormal behaviour patterns
indicative to prolonged stress and suffering. It is the stress through the process of confinement and transportation
that makes up the bulk of the animal's suffering
·Natural environments cannot be recreated in circuses. Complex environments cannot be set up in circuses because
of frequent travelling and extremely small accommodation and exercise areas. Circus animals' live are inevitably
impoverished. There is no scientific reason to believe that the natural needs of wild animals can be met through the
living conditions and husbandry offered by circuses.
·The lack of appropriate social interaction, reduction in time spent foraging and the restricted freedom to perform
natural behaviour represent stressors for captive animals. Stress can have short-term as well as long-term
behavioural and psychological effects
·Circus animals travel frequently. Many features of travel, such as forced movement, human handling, noise, trailer
movement and confinement constitutes sources of stress to captive animals
·Stereotypical behaviours (pacing, swaying etc) are indications of sub-optimal environments and indications of
poorer welfare conditions. Captivity affects behavioural patterns and normal behaviour gives way to a higher
percentage of inactivity
and/or increased abnormal
behaviour (self-directed
behaviour or self-injury) and
stereotypes.
·Performing inappropriate and
unnatural tricks in the name
of entertainment also does
nothing to foster respect for
animals
·Performing wild animals pose
a real threat to public safety,
precisely because they are
wild and therefore
unpredictable. No amount of
training or affection can
eliminate this danger
·Animals in circuses do not
benefit any educational,
conservational or scientific
cause.
WHY THE
NSPCA OPPOSE
WILD ANIMALS
IN CIRCUSSESThe NSPCA is opposed to anydegree of confinement or theuse of any animal in sport, entertainment or exhibitionlikely to cause distress orsuffering or which mayadversely affect the animal'swelfare. The NSPCA is totallyopposed to exhibitions orpresentations of wildlife incircuses and travelingmenageries. Because cruelty toanimals is inherent to suchdisplays, we seek to end suchuses of wild animals. We workto achieve this by increasingpublic awareness andstrengthening legislation thatprotects captive wild and exoticanimals.

AGvisitsOverstrandafter cleanaudit statusSouth Africa’s au-ditor-general, KimiMakwetu, visitedthe Overstrand on20 January, follow-ing the municipali-ty’s clean audit sta-tus for the 2013/14fiscal year.
Makwetu and histeam are visiting lo-cal authorities coun-trywide to encouragethosewhoseauditingstandards are not upto scratch to do so,and to learn fromthose whose are.He encouraged municipal officials attend-
ing the meeting by saying: “Life is tough, butdo the right thing, and the outcome will bebetter than the beginning.”According to Makwetu, “doing the right
thing” boils down to exercising discipline asfar as financial management is concerned, providing concrete evidence of projects/pro-grammes implemented and complying withall laws and regulations.Regarding the Overstrand’s audit status of
“fit and sound”, Mayor Nicolette Botha-Gu-thrie ascribes this to a commitment to savecosts and to cooperate in the interest of all

added that it is council’s commitment to up-holding a sustainable infrastructure, a work-ing economy, a well cared for environmentand the health and well-being of all who callOverstrand home – that makes it possible formunicipal officers to deliver services of thehighest standard.Botha-Guthrie assured the delegation that

Tribute
to a lady
It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to our belovedmentor and inspiration –thMrsM passed away peacefully on Saturdaymorning, 24 January 2015 at her home in Johannesburg.
Shewill be sorelymissed by all of her family, friends and staff.
Liz McGrath bought TheMarine at the end of 1997 andmanaged to re-open it after a frantic9month renovation in October 1998. To date, there are over 15 staff members that openedthe hotel with her all those years ago, still working at TheMarine.
Mrs McGrath was a proud ambassador of Relais & Chateaux and all three of her properties remain members ofthis illustrious organisation.
Through Relais & Chateaux shewas presentedwith theWomen of the Year Award in 2008,the only woman in theworld to have owned three hotels within Relais & Chateaux.
Her passion for gardening also saw her recognised for many awards annually at the Cape Town Flower Show. Her Constantia based hotel, The Cellars-Hohenort ,garnered the Relais & Châteaux Garden Award in 2010 forit’s exceptional appearance.
‘If food be themusic of life, play on!’ – this, for us, exemplifies her great passion and love for all things culinary!
The Marine Hotel has a rich and diverse history, having seen many dynamic guests as well as owners since itwas built in 1902. Under Mrs McGrath TheMarine found a new lease on lifeit had never experienced before. This wonderful tradition will continue in the years to come in the capablehands of her children and family.
After many memorable hours of poring through news and online articles, magazine interviews and the like,this final quote stood out as an epitome of theMrs M that we knew and loved;
“One of my greatest pleasures, is to see young people, often without formal training, like myself, to advancewithin the restaurant and hotel industry, which can take them anywhere in the world”
Mrs M –wewill miss you, God bless and your legendwill live on in all of us!

Uitheemsebosse skepdreigendebrandgevaar

Delegatesvisit clinicunannouncedafter complaintsJANINE VAN DER RIET
Good news in light of the complaints re-ceived from patients regarding the run-ning of the newly built Hermanus Com-munity Day Centre (CDC), is that theyhave extended their operational hours. The CDC is now open from 07:00 until18:00, from Monday to Friday.
These extended clinic hours were one ofthe solutions put in place to minimise thelength of time that patients have to queue be-fore being assisted.
After the article in the Hermanus Times(“Patients run out of patience”, 15/01/2015)appeared, the national executive member ofparliament,MasizolaMnqaselaorganisedanunannounced visit to the facility on Tuesday27 January.
Mnqasela, accompanied by his colleague,MP Dr Michael John Cardo, the OverstrandMayor Nicolette Botha-Guthrie, communityleader Archie Klaas and other role-players,spoke to patients outside the CDC, to find outmore about the problems experienced sincethis R38 million centre opened its doors ear-lier this year.
The responses he received were conflict-ing – some positive and others negative.
Afterwards the delegation went inside theCDC and it seemed they caught acting man-ager Carol Marais off-guard when the delega-tion made their intention clear that theywould like to discuss certain issues regard-ing complaints.
The biggest problem raised in the subse-quent meeting was the appointment systemat the clinic. Klaas explained to Mnqaselaand Marais that patients wanting to see anurse, had to wait for days before getting anappointment. “Some patients with seriousconditions opted to go straight to the Herma-
nus Provincial Hospital to be helped, ratherthan being forced to wait a few days.”
Mnqasela told Marais that the newly builtcentre is a primary service and people shouldbe able to walk in from the street, with confi-dence, knowing they will be helped.
Marais explained that the appointmentsystem was put in place by her superiors.Mnqasela asked her to investigate the optionof not having a booking system for all pa-tients, and also to prioritise the patients’ con-ditions.
Another concern from Mnqasela was thatpatients have to sit outside in the cold or heatwhile waiting their turn.
When theHermanusTimesvisited the clin-ic on 13 January, patients complained be-cause they had to stand outside the gate asonly 10 people at a time were let inside thepremises to report at reception.
Marais explained that they were not pre-pared for the big crowds when they opened.
“The signs, showing patients where to go,were only put up on Monday 26 January.
“During the opening week, we had to usea qualified nurse to re-route the people andcontrol the masses.”
In the meantime, the centre has put outchairs in the area where people have to waitbefore they are let through to the main build-ing.
This area is not covered with a roof, butthe patients are now being helped morequickly and allowed into the reception areato book their appointments or see a doctor.
The CDC sees about 230 patients a day.Marais says their staff , consisting of a full
time doctor, two doctors working shifts, sev-en clinical nurse practitioners and five pro-fessional nurses, is adequate for now.
Mnqasela thanked Marais for her time andher commitment to address the issues raised. He said the delegates plan to visit again.

The slum area between the back wall ofthe Hermanus Clinic and the fence ofthe tennis courts, where a group ofhomeless people squat, has been thecause of many a raised eyebrow anddeemed an “eyesore”.LesAbbot, chairperson of theHerma-
nus Night Shelter Association, says hehas been aware of this particular prob-lem since it arose almost six monthsago, and met Neville Michaels, Over-strand director of protection services,to discuss the matter.Abbot suggested they close off the
grassed backyard of the clinic grounds. He adds that he has no control overthese squatters, as they are not part ofthe group of homeless people who regu-larly stay at the night shelter situatedin the converted garages on the Herma-nus Clinic property.Vic Hamilton Attwell, who has been
amember of Hermanus Tennis Club for14 years, and plays early in the morn-ings twice a week, has also raised con-cern about this informal slum area andthe unsightly rubbish that is left lyingaround.Cllr Kari Brice, tasked to take care of
this issue, says the slum area was fullycleaned up on Monday 26 January, andwhen law enforcement visited on Mon-day evening, it was reported that therewas no-one loitering or sleeping there. She assures the public that law enforce-ment will be doing regular visits to thesite.
)When the night shelter was in direfinancial straits towards the end of lastyear, Abbot made a plea after a Sundayservice at the United Church where aninitial amount of R24 000 was raised,whichhasclimbedtoR35 000,withsomepeople indicating that they will keepcontributing to the project. Abbott saysthis is enoughmoney tokeep theshelteropen until at least May.By then, as the main beneficiary of
the 2015Lighthouse 2Lighthouse chari-ty walk, the association will haveenough money to begin building thenewshelteronthepropertyopposite theWaste Transfer Station in SwartdamRoad. Abbot says the civils contractorisonsiteandexcavating for the installa-tion of services has already begun.
Don’t be left in the darkWithmore load-shedding on the cards, peopleare urged to exercise cautionwhen using gas. Here are a few pointers to ensure safe usage:
)Gascylindersmustbe filledorexchangedat a reputable dealer.“Cylinders which are illegally filled by
someone other than those authorised by thebrand owner, can be potentially hazardous,”says Kevin Robertson, chief executive officerof theLiquefiedPetroleumGas SafetyAssoci-ation of South Africa (LPGSASA).
)A cylinder should only be filled to 80 per-cent of its capacity. Anything above thismeans the consumer could be endangered.Anything below this means the consumer isbeing cheated.
) When purchasing a gas cylinder makesure the logo on the valve seal matches thelogo on the cylinder.“If you purchase your own cylinder you are
responsible for itsmaintenanceandcangrantpermission to a filler to refill it for you. If youpay a deposit on a commercially branded cyl-inder, the brand owner retains ownership ofthe cylinder. The brand owner is responsiblefor the safe maintenance of it and can decidewho may or may not fill it,” said Robertson.
) If the cylinders are located outdoors andare exchanged by a supplier or dealerwho de-livers them, the supplier should check thatthat everything is in good condition.“If the cylinders are disconnected and re-
connected by the consumer, they shouldcheck that the bull nose or ‘o-ring’ is in placeandnot cracked or brittle. Also check that thehose is not perished, cracked or brittle. Havethe appliance serviced on a regular basis,”said Robertson.

BrieweLetters
Traffic jam bluesAll motorists get hot under the collarwhen having to drive in hectic traffic. In Hermanus, we are blessed with
“everythingis justaroundthecorner”.If you live ‘outside’ of Hermanus, sayin Voëlklip or Onrus, motorists wouldsay: “I am driving to town. So tell mewhat you need, because I am not driv-ing all the way to town again.”This sentiment suggests you live on
a farm hundreds of kilometres awayfrom town. But yes, once you have settled here
inHermanus, one tends to forget aboutthe two-hour traffic jams, to work andback, as is the case on the N1 and N2,not to mention what the Gautengershave to endure.Wearenot in thesameleagueas that,
thank goodness, but what is requiredfor now, in Sandbaai, is a big dose ofpatience and a dollop of kindness to letcars through until a solution is found.
Birds could be ‘banting’, but xylitol could be very dangerous to dogsIn further response to the letter from MoiraWalker who had wondered about whetherswopping the sugar water in her bird bottlefeeder with xylitol could have any negativeeffects,LeonSteyn, environmentalspecialist,
had answered that he could not see xylitol asa problem but added that he was sticking tosugar for his garden birds.Since then, Steyn investigated theuse of xy-
litol and found that although the research
published on the internet does not refer tobirds, it is stated that xylitol has been impli-cated in possible liver failure in dogs, whichcan be fatal.
Poor, poor parentsDear primary school parents. My heartgoes out to you. Parents and learners havea raw deal with schools. As a concerned and loving parent you
take your child to school, you pay goodmoney and now the teachers are to blamefor all that is not perfect.Needless to say, as aparent you instilled
self-worth, confidence and good values in-to your child. At home all is well. Father, mother, sib-
lings are all happy. You never discuss the“shortcomings”of the school and teachersin front of your child. As parents you are supportive of both
your child and the school. Does this soundfamiliar? The fact of the matter is that teachers
are overworked and underpaid.Pray for your child’s teacher and ask
how you can help?75YEAROLD RETIRED TEACHER

NATUREMATTERSDid you know... Thehighly endangered Capeplatanna (Xenopus gilli) is endemic to theextreme southwestern Cape coast. It is alowaltitude speciesoccurringwithin10 kmof the coast. It is found only in black, acidwater in Cape fynbos heathland. If waterbodiesdryup it aestivates (“hibernates”underground). It does not tolerate alterationof its habitat and the tadpoles are very sensitive to changes in water quality. The main threats are habitat loss due to
urbanisation, agricultural runoff and theeffects of spreading alien plants. It is also
threatened by hybridisation withthe common platanna, (X.laevis).
The Cape platanna is highly endangered. PHOTO: WWW.ARKIVE.COM
