CapeNature has filed complaints about both incidents with the police. The first carcass was found on a property in 4th Street, Voëlklip and removed by municipal employees on Friday morning. Leon Steyn, environmental specialist at the Over- strand Municipality (OM) said it seems the female baboon was killed by a small bullet, presumable from a .22 firearm, which entered below the baboon’s neck into her chest. They suspect the baboon was shot at another location and that the wounded animal tried to flee but succumbed to her injury on the pavement in front of a house in 4th Street. A member of the public phoned the authorities on Wednes- day morning to report a dead baboon found on her property. She found the baboon after taking down her washing in the back yard. According to Michael Henn from the municipali- ty’s environmental services, it seems the baboon had been poisoned and had died about three days earlier. The female that was shot is the third baboon known to have been shot in the urban area since 2009. The leader of the Fernkloof baboon troop was shot at a house in Fernkloof in June 2009. In January 2010 an eight-month-old baboon was shot in 3rd Street, also in Voëlklip. Furthermore, another baboon, affectionately known as Koos, has been missing for one month now and is also pre- sumed dead. After the most recent incidents, and the announcement that the baboon monitoring programme will end shortly, res- idents are concerned that more people will take the law into their own hands, or that residents will have no legal or useful options when faced with baboon trouble. The baboon monitor programme was started a few years ago to prevent people from harming baboons that enter and damage residents’ properties. The OM has abolished the baboon monitor pro- gramme as of 1 July this year, because it is regarded as an unfunded mandate, and will lead to a saving of R1.4 M for the municipality. In the mayor’s latest budget speech she mentioned that she will be in further discussion with roleplayers for the possible continuation of the baboon monitoring programme. “In Pringle Bay, residents have been working together in partnership with Working for the Coast for the past year with eight baboon monitors and it is a great success. We are looking into the possibility of launching the same kind of initia- tive in Hermanus,” Steyn said. The authorities are investigating a case of discharging a firearm within a municipal area and hunting a baboon without a permit. This pregnant baboon was found shot dead on 12 June in Voëlklip. A woman living on a farm near Stan- ford was shocked last Tuesday (10 June) to find dusty black footprints in her house after being awoken by a noise at around 23:30. She looked around the house to find barefoot prints on the tiles in every room. A large amount of black dust around the fireplace ex- plained these prints, and how the in- truder gained access to the house. According to Warrant Officer Sarina Hugo of the Stanford police, the woman went outside to find a ladder up against the house, where the intruder gained access to the chimney. “She ran inside the house to phone the police and then realised her cell phone, handbag and a suitcase full of clothes were missing,” said Hugo. Two days after the incident, the woman’s British passport and driver’s licence were found on the rugby field in Stanford and handed in at the Stan- ford police station. The police suspect the intruder to be either very thin or a young person, as the gap to the inside of the chimney is quite narrow. Stanford police are in- vestigating a case of housebreaking. Library Friends to help impairedreaders accessmore booksKERRY VAN RENSBURG

Residents of Hermanus with impairedvisionwill in futureno longerhaveaccessto new large print books or audio booksat the Hermanus Library.

According to Jacqueline Dowling, sec-retary of Friends of the Hermanus Li-brary, the library will no longer be pur-chasing large print books, due to ever in-creasing costs.

Audio books will not be supplied be-cause the discs are easily damaged.

She says: “This means that many read-ers will have a seriously limited choiceof reading material.”

TheFriendsareworkingwithsuppliersof reading aids for poorly sighted mem-bers and havemade contact withWorces-ter School for the Blind and Specsavers.

Thelibraryhasalreadyacquiredamag-nifying screen which is now available inthe library. They are also exploring othersuppliers for more affordable screens.

The Worcester Institute for the Blindhas good selection of magnifying aidswhich make it possible to read smaller

print (10 pt/12 pt). This opens up a largerrangeofoptionssuchasbooks, magazinesand newspapers.

The reading aids range in price from apagemagnifying glass for R100 to an EYEC electronic reading apparatus whichcosts R7 860.

Dowling is arranging for a qualifiedperson from the Worcester Institute forthe Blind to visit the Hermanus Librarywith a full range of aids. An assessmentof people’s requirements will be conduct-edandtheywillbeadvisedwhichaidswillbe suitable for their needs.

She says the Friends are offering thisas an outreach community service.

Dowling says a member of the Her-manusLibrary,whoseeyesight isdeterio-rating, has been a member of theGrahamstown Library for the Blindwhich offers a nationwide free service.

Living with nature

What if every so often, someone tooka pot-shot at one of our southern rightwhales? It’s unthinkable and barbaric. Our whales enjoy protection, but thishas not always been the case. Theywere killed for food and fuel, and insome parts of the world, this is still thecase.

Ourbaboons, roaming theFernkloofNature Reserve mountains and thestreets of Voëlklip, are seen by manyas a menace. Raiding homes, breakinggutters, terrifyingourchildrenandbe-having like thugs.

But no matter how much of a prob-lem the baboons continue to be, theyare very much a part of the natural en-vironment we are so quick to boastabout. Shooting them from yourkitchen window is simply not allowed, especially in a residential area.

Wemayneverknowwhoshot theba-boon in Voëlklip this week, or who poi-soned another one. This is not the firsttime this kind of action has been takenin this suburb.

We have built homes on the moun-tain slopes, and cut the baboons offfrom the coast where they could, onceupon a time, feast on marine morsels. Now,when theysee food ineveryback-yard, orkitchencounter, theyaredriv-en by their appetite and instincts.

Shooting them is surely not the solu-tion.

Dear Mary Faure, you were so right! When FynArts was launched last year, it waswell received. All who attended the eventsthat were staged were very glad to have doneso, and pleased with the festival as a whole.

I recall writing to you at the time, however, and suggesting that, whilst it had been a won-derful event, perhaps it would be sensible tohold it every two years, so as not to kill theproverbial goose. You disagreed – and howright you were!

This year’s festival has completely over-whelmedmeand, I’msure,manyotherpartic-ipants.ReneeandIattended10eventsandalsospent agooddeal of timevisitinggalleries andwine estates. Everything we saw, heard ortasted made us want more, and one can onlyconclude that the festival has truly come ofage.

Well done to you and your team. I think youhave started something that will continue togrow and will establish our wonderful townas a centre for exciting and diverse culturefor the foreseeable future.

Stanford’s service heroEarly on Monday morning 16 June, a publicholiday, I discovered a services problem inStanford and the only cellphone number Icould find was for the local fire fighting hero,Graig Niemand.

I called him to ask who to inform and herequested details.

Within 10 minutes he was at the scene, as-sessed the problem within minutes, and com-menced to make calls to various Overstrandstaff members relaxing in their homes.

He told them to immediately report for dutyand informed them of the problem and whereit was situated, and instructed them on whathad to be done by them to remedy the situa-tion.

This demonstration of great managementskills, accurate assessment of a problem, rap-id determination of the solution, and immedi-ate reaction by instructing staff members hasgiven me a great deal of confidence in his andthus the Stanford administration’s ability todeal with challenges.

The Overstrand is most fortunate to havededicated staff members of his calibre andneeds to be congratulated on employing suchpersons, and on developing their skillsthrough ongoing training and support. Welldone Graig and all of the Overstrand team.

Circulation should deter-mine language policyI read the somewhat acerbic letter fromBruceAndrew (HT/12/06) regarding the languageofpublication of HT.

The fact is that nearly everyone who is like-ly to buy HT reads English, while the samecannot be said for Afrikaans. Whether theyshould or shouldn’t is irrelevant. It is veryfrustrating to see a front page story of interestbut not be able to read it, and often one willnot buy the newspaper as a result.

The most important consideration for a lo-cal newspaper is circulation and this must bewhatgoverns theeditorialpolicy.SurelyAfri-kaans-speaking people wouldn’t boycott HTif it were published in English only, wouldthey?

It’s time to put aside petty nationalism andtake the pragmatic view.

Puik, verpleegsters!

Terug by Hermanus. Die personeel vanSaal A was briljant. Elkeen op sy eie manierhet my verblyf so gerieflik moontlik ge-maak.

Hou so aan.

Who isactuallybeingneglected in the languagesaga?

I shan’t repeat anything mentioned in the re-sponses to Anne Clark’s SMS regarding thefirst front page of the Hermanus Times dated5 June, except to say that I wholeheartedlyagree with them all.

Please note, by the way: English title onlywhile the newspaper is part of the once Afri-kaans-only Media24 group!

Even their website opens in English, withthe option of reading it in Afrikaans.

However, I did a time-consuming spread-sheet depicting English articles and ads ver-sus Afrikaans and bilingual ones.

I worked through the entire HermanusTimes of 5 and 12 June but in the 12 June issueI did not count the Classifieds.

English articles in the above two issues are172 vs 55 Afrikaans ones; English ads are 295vs 59 Afrikaans ones and there are 9 bi or tri-lingual ones.

If anyone has reason to complain, it is Afri-

kaans,XhosaandZuluspeakers–notEnglish-only speakers!

We are the ones being neglected by the HTand the business community.

But then, English is mos The World Lan-guage over which the sun will never set.

In addition, I am convinced that Anne getsservedinEnglishwheneverandwhereversheso wishes, while the rest of us have to switchto English.

Luckilymostofuscanandwedoitgracious-ly and smilingly.

Dear Anne, take the article to any friendly,Afrikaans-speaking neighbour (I doubt thatyou have Afrikaans friends) and ask for atranslation or a summary of any of the fewAfrikaans articles in any Hermanus Times. There are also translators who will help you– unfortunately at a price.

FynArts takesagiant leapHEDDA MITTNER

“I am deeply grateful for theresponse to this year’s festi-val,” says a clearly relievedMary Faure, chairperson ofHermanusTourismandcoor-dinator of Hermanus Fyn-Arts.

Although this unique eventon the South African festivalcalendar is now only in its sec-ond year, Faure says ticketsaleswere virtually double thatof last year. “This is due to theimprovedsizeandqualityof theprogramme, the calibre of theartists and musicians that tookpart, the support of the boardmembers and of course the en-thusiastic response from thepublic,” says Faure.“The most important thing

for me is that the artists had areally good time in Hermanus, and appreciated the audiencesfrom whom they received standingovations at almost all the concerts. The audiences carried the flag forFynArtsandprovedthatthis isafes-tival whose time has come.”Faure says there were also more

sell-out concerts than last year, andbettersupportof concerts inZwelih-leandHawston, inspiteof the inhos-pitable weather.According to Faure, many of the

artists and musicians will be backagain next year. However, the aimis not to bring the same shows backfor more than two years in a row,in order to keep the festival’s offer-ing current and fresh.Blake Albert, general manager of

the Windsor Hotel, says FynArts is

an excellent way of showcasing themany attractions of Hermanus.“Accommodation was up forMay

and June, and FynArts definitelyhadan impact.A largeportioncamefrom walk-in trade, which meansthat day visitors decided to staylongerandenjoy themanyofferingsof FynArts. We were very active insupportingandmarketingFynArts, and we’ll work on more accommo-dationpackages fornext year,” saysAlbert.“I’d like to congratulate Faure

and her team for a spectacularlywell run show, and wish them a lotof success.”Elizma Gerber, general manager

of theQuartersHotel, says although

they did not have a significantincrease in accommodation, the FynArts events hosted bythe hotel were fully booked.Events at The Marine hotelwere also well attended.“FynArts is such a bonus for

this town,” says Tamsin Koen, owner of Just Pure Bistro.“We were consistently busy

for thewhole ten days of the fes-tival.Therewerea lotofdayvis-itors and I also noticed manypeoplewhohaveholidayhomeshere but who do not normallycome to Hermanus at this timeof year. I think Hermanus Fyn-Arts is going to become ourmain annual cultural event.”Fabio Lenci, the owner of Fa-

bio’sRistorante says this isnor-mally a quiet time for business-es inHermanusbut themid-daytradewas definitely better thanusual. Evening trade was alsoup during the long weekend.“I am super stoked about the

progress that FynArts has made,”he says.Frieda Lloyd, coordinator of the

Hermanus Wine Route, says thewine tastings and other food andwineeventswereverywellattendedand more wine estates participatedinFynArts than lastyearbyhostingart exhibitions and concerts.

This was also the first year thatBenguella Cove participated.“Many visitors said they went to

the wineries to see the art exhibi-tions, but once there they also didwine tasting. This illustrates what awonderful job FynArts is doing inbringing the different arts togetherand how everyone can benefit fromthis event.”

Mary Faure was at Dutchies on GrottoBeach on Wednesday to hand over the FynArts Culinary Challenge trophy to the winning chef, Rebecca Matthysen. This competition saw 12 restaurants in Hermanus entering their dishes – one prepared with hakeand one with Cape honey. The public participated in scoring the dishes and a judging panel selected the winner from six finalists. With Mary and Rebecca are Joke andDaan Gonggrijp of Dutchies.

FromHermanusCraftVillage to the JSEPSG Konsult, the independent 16-year-oldfinancial servicesprovider, becamethe lat-est company to list on the main board ofthe JSE on 18 June 2014.

This event marked a milestone for thisremarkable company, whichwas born andraised right here in Hermanus. Its found-ing CEO and current chairman, WillemTheron, remembers that the very idea ofPSG Konsult was conceived over a cup ofcoffee with Wallie Krumm in the Prince ofWhales coffee shop towards the end of 1997.

He and Wallie, at the time also a Her-manusresident, submittedtheirplanto thePSG Group. They immediately found sup-port and a 50% investor. The result wasthat they kicked off the business on 1 July1998 under the name PSG Konsult.

The following is a quote from the compa-ny’s manual compiled the same year: “TheCompanymust be to the long-term person-al and financial advantage of PSG KonsultLtd, accountants, consultants as well asour valued clients and the broader commu-nity. In order to accomplish the aforemen-tioned, the company will open branchesright across SouthernAfricawith the viewto list.” Prophetic words indeed.

PSG Konsult’s head office was estab-lished in the Hemel-en-Aarde Village, where it was situated until last year. Overthe years, Jannie Mouton, chairman ofPSG Group often jokingly remarked thatit baffled him how such a successful busi-ness could be run from a “craft village” inHermanus!

What will interest investors is not onlythecurrentstateof thebusiness,butpartic-ularly its prospects.

Most investors prefer companies thathave unique qualities and a distinct com-petitive advantage. PSG Konsult’s busi-ness model is one of a kind. It has three

segments being WEALTH, ASSET MAN-AGEMENT and INSURE. Although thesebusinesses complement eachother to someextent, the diversification provides valua-ble protection should trading conditionsbecome tough in one segment. Having aneffectivedistributionnetworkof193officesacross the country is an enviable asset ofthe company.

Also, and probably the most powerfulfactor that drives its success, is the innova-tive and unique remuneration model thatwas devised and implemented more thanadecadeago. In essence, the financial plan-ners, portfolio managers and/or stockbro-kers own 70%of their respective branches.30% of branch income goes to Konsultwhile the branches have to manage theirexpenses and earn their profit incentivefrom the remaining 70%. As Mouton putsit: “It encourages entrepreneurs and entre-preneurship within a corporate struc-ture.”

Butgreatbusinessesmustalso showcon-sistent growth, which will reflect in theirnumbers. How does PSGKonsult stack up?

The company had a very strong showingduring its financial year to February 2014.Headline earnings per share rose by 30%to 20 cents per share and a dividend of 11,3cwas declared. Funds under managementgrewby 38% toR112,1 billion and funds un-der administration by 31% to R234,5 bil-lion. On the Insure side, underwriting pre-mium income increased by 550% to R432,6million.

Onemight beg the question: whatmakesPSG Konsult an impressive business? When we recently asked Willem what hesaw as the singlemost important factor, hereplied “we all work together as colleaguesand we are all entrepreneurs”. He clearlydoes not only rate the entrepreneurial

ethos of the business highly, but also thelong-term impact of the flat managementstructure and the mutual respect it de-mands and has established amongst all in-volved.

Years after attending PSG Konsult’s An-nual Conference as opening speaker in2006, tycoonDr.ChristoWieserecalled thatwhat struck him at the time was the “al-most tangible” excitement of the 300 at-tendeesabout theirbusiness.DrJohanvanZyl, CEO of Sanlam Group, remarked thatPSGKonsult stoodout in theSouthAfricanfinancial services landscape as an inde-pendent institution that conducts qualitybusiness with integrity and professional-ism. Add to that the backing of the PSGGroup and a vastly experienced manage-ment team led by CEO, Francois Gouws.

Francois is a workaholic by all accountsand makes no secret of management’s vi-sion to take this company right to the top.Yesterday’s listing on the JSE landmarksan important step towards realising thatvision.

Note: This article does not constitute ex-plicitadvice.Pastperformanceisnot indic-ative of future returns. Always rememberthe prudent way is to consult your stock-broker before investing. The writer ownsshares in PSG Konsult.

NewDatsunGo isrevealed inSouthAfricaQUICKPIC

As the name suggests, the Datsun GOwillbring to the local market a vehicle that isdesigned for ‘people on the GO’- peoplewhoareactive, havedefinedprioritiesandpursue the optimumchoice for their stageof life.

Starting with a clean sheet of paper, Datsundesigners have been able to create a totallynew and distinctive design for the Datsunbrand models of the 21st century. The DatsunGO is designed to be stylish and modern, butat the same time purposeful and robust. The‘face’ of the car is dominated by Datsun’s dis-tinctive and modern “D-cut grille”. The over-all result is a smooth and sophisticated silhou-ette in which the strong haunches and charac-ter linessuggestdynamicmovementandclearagility, coupled with an inner strength andovert robustness.

Vincent Cobee, Global head of Datsun, says:“In creating Datsun GO we have designed abrand new car that offers all the benefits ofmodels that are much more expensive. Ourcar features class leading levels of perform-ance, economy and handling. It is built to re-quirements and not down to a price. The addi-tion of the many advanced features provesthis.”

InkeepingwiththeDatsundesignethos, theinterior of the Datsun GO is modern, simple, functional, yet undeniably good looking.Uniquely in the class, the gear lever and park-ing brake handle are mounted in the centreconsole. A benefit of housing the gear leverand parking brake in the centre console is theopportunity to adopt ‘connected’ front seatswhich are unique in the segment. Extra com-fort is also provided by the ergonomically de-signedfrontseats,whichprovideaddedspinalsupport. Interior space is class-leading andwith all the other standard features, makingthe Datsun GO one of the best value cars onthe market today” advises Des Fenner, Gener-al Manager, Datsun.

Datsun GO offers much to customers - frommodern exterior styling, fuel consumption ofjust 20 kms per F, a unique Mobile DockingStation (MDS) that allows an owner to synchis or her Smartphone directly with the car.The MDS simply slots the smartphone into aholder in the centre of the dashboard whichcan be paired by an AUX cable to the car’s sys-tem and the car’s integrated door mountedloudspeakers.

“Researchhas indicatedthat theDatsunGOpurchasers place a premium on having a carthat reflects their individual personalities. Assuch, a full range of optional accessories willbe available to personalise the Datsun GO toowners’ requirements” added Fenner.

Datsun GO is planned to go on sale in thelast quarter of 2014 and the aim is to bringthe car in at under R100 000, making it a realvalue proposition for the first time new carbuyer.Salesandservicewillbe initiallyestab-lished through a network of 30 Datsun brand-ed dealerships throughout South Africa, anumber to be doubled in mid-term.

Tale of the tapeSelected High line features of the DatsunGO

- a new modern choice for up-and-coming aspi-rational owners - include:

•Modern styled 5-door FWD hatchback•1.2 litre engine•Fuel efficiency of over 20 km/F•Expanded front seat configuration•Spacious interior for five occupants•Unique Mobile docking station

Hyundai’s all-newGrand i10 hasarrived in SouthAfrica, and thissmall well-endowed hatchbackhas all the potential to fill theshoes of a forerunner that hashelped to put the Korean carbrand’s name on the map in ourcountry.

Lastweek ourweatherwas absolutely perfectat the start of the week but became progres-sively worse.Tuesdaywas a lovely day for the ladies, and

Not a breath of wind and lovely sunshine. Wehad119players, also competing inabetterballstableford.Winning the day on 47 points was the voice

of experience Reinhard Buhr and his partnerFaanPretorius.Coming ina close second, onepoint behind was Syd White and Baldy Bald-win. Well done, guys. The ball pool paid to 43 and there were six

two-clubs.Thursday was again an immaculate day. I

had the good fortune to playArabellawith theBoland Nomads. Arabella is ranked fifth inthecountryandthetopgolfcourseintheWest-ern Cape. I haven’t played at this venue fora couple of years and we have had mixed re-portsabout thequalityof thecourseandfacili-ty.May I just say that although my loyalties

lie with Hermanus Golf Club, Arabella isworld class. The course was fantastic, well presented,

and an absolute pleasure to play. The staffwere extremely friendly and knew exactlywhat they were doing. The catering was veryreasonably priced and again excellent. As forthe greens I haven’t seen greens so beautifulsince last year when I was at Augusta. As for thereportsofpoorcoursequalityand

not measuring up to expectation, whateverthey have done to improve their facility, theyhave done, and even Mr and Mrs Grumpywould be able to see just why it is rankednumber five in the country.Beautiful.Saturday was washed out, lots of rain and

wind and no golfers! Maybe next week.
