The COSMOS Objective

For more than 20 years Ecocert has been a globally recognized standard for natural and organic cosmetics. In 2010 five leading European certification bodies have developed the Cosmetics Organic Standard (COSMOS-standard) to harmonise organic cosmetic standards globally. As a consequence, our Ecoverte™ range is now COSMOS organic certified.

To get COSMOS organic certification, 95% of a product’s agro-ingredients and 20% of the entire product must be organic. If an ingredient is available organically, it must be used. The remaining ingredients must meet strict criteria to ensure that they are not damaging to our health or the environment. Products must also meet environmental standards for manufacturing and use approved ‘green chemistry‘ processes when modifying ingredients. Lipoid Kosmetik strongly supports organic cosmetics and within this field the harmonisation of organic cosmetic standards.

Since 2009, we have developed various different glycerine-based plant extracts under the name of Ecoverte™. In 2011, these extracts have achieved natural and organic certification by Ecocert. In July 2013, the Ecoverte™ product range has also been COSMOS certified. Of course all Ecoverte™ extracts can be used in Ecocert-certified formulations as well.

We keep on working to expand the number of COSMOS-approved products. Following the high consumer demand for natural and organic products we have created the Ecoverte™ product line as an option for our customers to support their contribution to environmental sustainability and to answer the growing trend of natural cosmetics.

Swiss Alpine Plant Extracts

Switzerland is located in the heart of Europe. Covering an area of only 41,284 square kilometers it is one of the smallest countries in Europe. But nowhere else you will find such a cultural diversity and variety of landscapes in a small space.

Mountains, lakes, rivers and glaciers form part of Switzerland. Yodeling, Heidi and lush alp meadows give Switzerland the ideal-typical image. Traditions have been carefully maintained to this day. Switzerland is well known for its delicious cheese, tender chocolate and its high quality level.

Our Swiss plants come from the alpine area of Switzerland, which covers 60% of the land area. Despite the rough climatic conditions a magnificent variety of plant species is grown in the alpine regions. The alpine plants have acclimatized to the special conditions in the mountain area. Plants are grown up to an altitude of 2’000 meters above sea level. The most famous plants such as gentian or edelweiss are rare and commonly protected in the wild.

Within a wide and outstanding variety of Swiss Alpine plants, Lipoid Kosmetik offers a special selection of cultivated organic plants supporting innovative product concepts.

The Edelweiss has become a symbol of rugged beauty and purity associated with the Alps. Its bloom is unique. Its mystery is told in literature as well as in songs. The Edelweiss is a rare plant dedicated to luxury. It communicates exclusive desire and sophisticated demand.

Calendula (Calendula officinalis) Herbasol® Ecoverte™ Calendula 400970.179.2

The medicinal use of Calendula dates back to the Ancient Greeks. Calendula is thought to have been used as a treatment for wounds and minor fungal infections. Another preparation is calendula oil, which has been used as a healing ointment for cuts, burns, bruises, warts, aches and pains.

For many years Hay Flowers have been part in the folk medicine. It is told to assist the increase of blood flow as well as muscle relaxation.

South of France Plant Extracts

This area, called Le Midi, stretches from Nice in the south-east, via Marseille and up to Bordeaux in the south-west. Good living, viniculture and the mediterranean gastronomy form part of the Midi’s culture. Spectacular countryside of vineyards and orchards, fascinating ‘perched’ hill-top villages, outstanding natural products and the light of Van Gogh‘s and Cezanne‘s paintings characterize this area.

The mediterranean and the oceanic mild and moist climates are ideal for the growth of a varied and colorful flora. 80% of the region’s soil is farmable land. This makes it France’s leading region by number of farms (54.000). Almost 9000 hectares (22.000 acres) are organic-certified farmland.

In South of France we find a lot of pine forests and various oaks, eucalyptus and dwarf pines, mainly in Provence. Towards the Mediterranean grow olive trees, vines, mulberry and fig trees, as well as laurel, wild herbs and the low scrub known as maquis. Lavender fields cover the high plateaux in the Sault area, at the base of Mont Ventoux. Lavender grows in the Apt area, in the Luberon and in the Valréas Enclave.

Most of our selected South of France products come from the Drôme district, situated at the foothills of the Alps. This area is surrounded by Montagne de Lans and the Trièves as well as the nature

reserve Vercors. 30% of the landscape is timbered mostly by limber pines and chestnuts. The area is best known for its agricultural products. Herbs, olives, nuts and lavender are cultivated here. You also find a big variety of fruits like peaches, melons, raspberries and cherries.

Within this large biodiversity, Lipoid Kosmetik selected a special choice of organic plants with specific cosmetic properties to support cosmetic product innovations.

Cherry Blossom blows nearly pure white, tinged with the palest pink, especially near the stem. They bloom and usually fall within a week, before the leaves come out. A beautiful and precious flower for luxury cosmetic products.

Lovage Root flourishes where it is sunny and the soil is rich and moist. This perennial plant is native to the Mediterranean. The leaves are dark green and the flowers are greenish yellow in color. Lovage Root is an aromatic plant, both in terms of aroma and flavour it is similar to celery.
