Because of the topog- raphy and neighboring structures, only peek-a-boo views were available from the existing 1-1/2 story house. PROGRAM The owners, accustomed to downtown condominium living, wanted to add gardening and outdoor space to their lifestyle, while maintaining an urban feel. They were also hoping to maximize any views available from the site. SOLUTION The main living space is on the upper floor, providing spectacular views of the city, the Space Needle, and Elliott Bay over the neighboring roofscape. The lower two floors are clad in a modular cementitious rainscreen and are a base for the upstairs loft. The ground floor includes a guest suite with a sheltered terrace in the back. The second floor contains the master suite, library, and a roof deck overlooking the front garden. A two-story space is carved out of the base bypasses the secondary uses, and connects the entry to the loft via an open steel stair.

SITE
