INTERHOUSE ATHLETICS DAYBeaumont Primary School enjoyed a day of fun and full participation on behalf of learners, parents and educators at their Interhouse Athletics day.

Compiled by Jenny Morris

For the chocolate meringue• 8 egg whites• pinch of salt• 450g castor sugar• 10ml vanilla extract• 20ml white vinegar• 40ml corn flour, sifted• 30ml cocoa powder, siftedFor the layers• 180g good quality dark chocolate• 200ml cream (to melt with

chocolate)*• 10ml vanilla extract or seed

scrapings of 1 vanilla pod• 300ml cream, whipped until just

stiff*• fresh cherries or strawberries for

garnishing• grated chocolate for garnishing

(optional)• *this recipe uses 500ml cream in

total

To make the meringuePreheat the oven to 140˚C. Line a baking sheet with baking paper.

Whisk the egg whites and salt until just stiff. Gradually mix in the castor sugar, one spoon at a time. Whisk the mixture until glossy and thick.

Use a metal spoon to fold in the vanilla, vinegar, corn flour and cocoa powder lightly but thoroughly.

Spoon the meringue mixture on to the prepared baking sheet. Make four circles, each with a 20cm diameter, with fairly thick bases and raised edges.

Bake for one hour then turn off the heat. Leave the meringue in the oven until completely cold (preferably overnight).

To make the fillingPlace the chocolate and 200ml cream in a double-boiler and stir over low heat until the chocolate is just melted. Leave to cool completely.

Stir the vanilla into the 300ml whipped cream.

Place a meringue disc on a serving platter, spread with a quarter of the chocolate mixture followed by a quarter of the whipped cream. Top with another meringue disc and repeat three more times. Garnish the final layer of chocolate and cream with

fresh fruit and the optional grated chocolate.

Coffee and hazelnut alternativeOmit the cocoa powder from the

meringue recipe and add 20ml instant espresso coffee powder to the mixture instead. Once the meringue discs are baked, layer them with whipped cream and caramel-dipped hazelnuts.

Note: For one large Pavlova, halve the ingredients for the chocolate meringue. Top with the melted chocolate and cream (optional).

6 FASHION

DENIM DRESS-UP

Whether you’re curvy or skinny, now is the time to wear denim. It remains one of those classic pieces meant to be owned by everyone, so be daring and

have some fun with your denim!

Denim on denimThis trend is hugely fashionable this summer, so play around with different tones and textures. For a chic look, go for white jeans and a chambray shirt. If you want to make a statement, go for darker bottoms and a lighter denim top.

Denim skirtThe skirt has had a revival and is back in fashion this season. Look out for something with a slit up the leg or buttons in front. Wear your skirt with a plain tee tucked into it, and add a belt for a more feminine look.

Ripped jeansThis look has been with us for a while. Look out for a more subtle ripped effect and wear these jeans with a printed tee or feminine top for a chic look.

Denim waistcoatWearing a waistcoat is an easy way to jazz up an outfit. Wear your waistcoat with a flowing dress for a bohemian feel, or pair it with shorts and a basic top.

Denim shirtThis is an essential wardrobe item. Because it’s so versatile, you can wear it with almost anything in your wardrobe.

Denim play suits or dungareesDungarees are a great alternative to the usual shorts. You can wear them

with flats and a statement necklace for a more modern look.

SOMERSET COLLEGE / SPUR FAMILY FUN DAY

OOPS!

Somerset College held a Fun Day on Sunday 8 February. This was a community event and mountain biking (35km, 10km and 3km) and trail running (10km and 3km) were on offer. The school is perfectly situated to host an event of this type; surrounded by mountains and acres of beauti-ful farmland. For those who weren’t looking for a physical challenge, there was a magnificent tea garden provided

by the Parents’ Association. Coach Kyle also provided an excellent babysitting facility for families wanting to partic-ipate in one of the off campus events. The emphasis was on fun, but for those more serious athletes their events were timed and there were prizes. (Spur provided med-als for all participants.) Medical support was provided by ER24, which fortunately wasn’t required by anyone. Each

participant received a complimentary Spur burger and a Bos sports drink. As this is the first time the school has hosted an event of this magnitude, the number of entries were limited. Due to the success of this event, Somerset College will be making it an annual event. If you missed the cut off for this year’s event, don’t miss out next year.

STELLENBOSCH CELEBRATES THE OPENING OF THE RHENISH ASTROTURF The opening of the Rhenish Astro on 29 January is a real boon for hockey in the town and many locals turned up to help Rhenish celebrate this fantastic addition to their facilities. The Rhenish astro had been a dream of former principal of Rhenish, Ms Letitia Snyman, and it was only fitting that the field has been dedicated to Ms Snyman, herself an enthusiastic and skilled hockey player in her time. The highlight of the afternoon was definitely the presence of two ex-Rhenishers who had represented

their country at Hockey, Mrs Rennie Ross-Innes and Ms Kathleen Taylor. These ex-Springboks enthusiastically shared their memories of their days as Rhenish hockey players and encouraged the girls not only to participate in sport but always to strive for enjoyment in their sport of choice. The Rhenish astro is a project taken on by the entire Rhenish community. It was welcomed and celebrated as the valuable addition to the family that it will be.

INTER HOUSE ATHLETICSOn a VERY hot 3 February, Rhenishers participated in their annual Inter House Athletics at Coetzenburg. This is an important warm up for athletes as they prepare to take on the other 3 Girls’ schools in the Boland at the annual 4M Athletics meeting.

CHOIR CAMPThe Senior section of the Rhenish Girls’ High School choir spent the first weekend of February on camp preparing their repertoire for the 2015 choir season. Hard work was combined with a great deal of fun and the girls came back inspired and motivated.

SA WOMEN’S HOCKEY SKILLS CLINIC AT RHENISHThe South African Woman’s hockey team hosted a clinic at the new Rhenish Girls’ High Astro turf. Girls from different schools in the Boland area, ages 9 - 18 were privileged to receive quality coaching from six SA hockey players. It was an eventful day, the girls were taught many new skills which will hopefully be mastered in the near future in their games. The girls left the clinic inspired, motivated, filled with knowledge and ready to put it all into play in the upcoming season.
