Hi Folks! Just to let you know, that this year’s plan includes a very efficient Board of Governors who have shown themselves to be independent thinkers who can act quickly and efficiently along with our General Manager Nick Woytenko and Treasurer Linell Kam when it comes to taking care of business and the welfare of our members. Cases in point recently involved breakdowns of our members’ ice machine and the galley stove, both of which could have been catastrophic if planning for such problems had not taken place months before. Fortunately it had, and steps were already in place for future servicing of new machines by reliable vendors, fittings and plumbing which would match the newly installed machines, and the alleviation of problems which might have been “show stoppers” at some future date. But all of those exigencies had been thought of many months prior, and the Board of Govs voted “Go” after careful deliberation on a proposal to acquire the appliances, and the club continued its operation with ‘nary a hitch.

The hallmark of HYC 2010 is the utilization of the myriad skills and talents of our members to service our organization and its other members. Look around you, and you will see what is described as “Fortune 500” assets, as described by U.S. Coast Guard Commandant Thad Allen. Our Committees are chock full of them, loaded with talent and professional. That is why I will be urging them to assist you and our organization. There will be one or two of them explaining their services to the club during the General Membership meetings, and asking how they can help you. It’s a good first step.

You may have heard that we have the reputation of not following our own By-Laws. At first blush, that sounds ridiculous, but it appears to be true. Those rules were put down during our own Club’s history by our Boards, and like the laws and ordinances of our City and State, it usually comes about because people are known to blithely tread over other people’s property or civil rights if not prohibited from doing so. Unfortunately, I realized that indeed, it appeared to be happening during one of our popular “Wine Tasting” events. After observing that other members eating at nearby dining tables, and in the bar area were showing symptoms of extreme annoyance and peeve by the boisterous crowd noisily reacting to the auction-like activities a few feet away, I realized that those diners and responsible imbibers did indeed have an expectation of quiet ambiance on that night. I quietly counted what appeared to be By-Law violations, as well as other “No Fly Zone” violations on my fingers and then my toes. After running out of extremities, I stopped. I checked to see if our Liquor License was still where it was supposed to be, and promptly prohibited further Wine Tasting events by anyone until further notice. Beer Tasting is also a no-no. If you’re going to play with your beer, don’t drink. You’re giving the rest of us a bad name! A total revamp of said events in the future will definitely be labeled “For educational purposes only.” Aloha my friends.

Hey Fishing fans it’s the Rear Commodore checking in with you with the contest updates. The Presidents day contest came off with a big bang or barrel of fish whichever you want. We had eight boats and a whole lot of fish. Commorant was the big fish on the block at 246.5 pounds of Marlin, Bruce Matson and his crew did it up right. Eric Clark and the crew of Indigo claimed second and had a Marlin also of 241.1 pounds close race guys. But the real fish master was Lee Severs on Sea Verse III he caught a total of 308 pounds of fish including a full flags lead of Ahi, Ono, Marlin and Mahi. Lee is the current leader for seasons points.

Don’t forget the Mitch’s Sushi shootout on the 13th and 14th of March. Make sure that you get in your entry Craig is only taking 50 boats and already has 40 entry’s. you

Aloha! Just to let you know, that this year’s plan includes a Kaneohe Yacht Club’s Opening Day Laser Regatta was held on Feb 14 with 26 boats! The wind was trades 5-11 knots with big shifts and very patchy. Principal Race Officer Jesse Andrews ran five windward/leeward races and every race was square to the wind. Winning the day was University of Hawaii sailor Julian Soto. Sailing for HYC were Mitchell Woodrow, Woody Woodrow, Alicia Ward, Laura Hughes, and Morgan Merrill. Thanks to Kai Andrade for the registration and race committee help.

Classes have begun for the novice, intermediate, and racing courses. Instructors Ailana Warren, Laura Hughes, and Aneka Lizotte are keeping the sailors going upwind and learning new skills. We are offering a team racing class for the afternoon sailors, team racing is a version of sailing where 3 boats race against 3 boats on another team. The team wins when a combination of their score is less than the other team. Team racing is popular in high school sailing and college sailing.

We are offering a spring break sailing program beginning March 22 with classes during the week from 9am to 12pm for the novice/intermediate and 1-4 for the racing program. We usually sail lasers in the afternoon and this is a good time to come out for laser sailing.

High school sailing is underway with 12 schools sailing in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu league. Teams are practicing Monday thru Thursday with some schools having up to 16 sailors on their roster! Thanks to the coaches for putting their teams together and I look forward to a fun spring.

Adult sailing classes are ongoing in our Cal 20 and 420 fleet, check out the HYC website for more information.

Upcoming regattas for the Hawaii Youth Sailing Association are Saturday March 6 at Kaneohe Yacht Club and Saturday March 20 at Hickam Harbor. These are great introductions to racing and the social events after are really fun!

Hawaii Yacht Club is survived by its members, and it is every member’s responsibility to get involved either by serving on a committee or helping out with a major function. Many of our events are accomplished through the dedication of the same group of volunteers and putting it bluntly this group is tired and overworked. The whole club will benefit from new energy and new ideas if different people get involved. Consider what you can do to build the club and keep the tradition alive. MARCH HIGHLIGHTSST. PATRICK’S DAY (MAR. 17TH)Looking forward to a great fun filled Month at HYC. Vice Commodore Patti Naiyoke has a great program planned for St. Patrick’s Day on the 17th. Did you know that the St. Patrick’s Day custom came to America in 1737. That was the first year St. Patrick’s Day was publicly celebrated in this country, in Boston. One traditional icon of the day is the shamrock. Come join us on the 17th with specials from the Galley and enjoy the festivities.

GALLEY CONCESSIONAIRE’S ONE-YEAR ANNIVERSARYCongratulations go out to Chef Lee and his team of professionals for one year’s service at HYC. Starting up a business during the Transpac season is not an easy task. Chef Lee turned out one of the best events ever! Tuscan-born Chef Lee has an interesting mixed-food background resulting in a love for foods that reflect both his Mexican and Italian heritage. He was born in Italy and moved to Mexico when he was 10 years old. He attended culinary school for three years in Siena, Italy. Chef Alfredo Lee describes his style as Traditional Italian with a Latin flair. HYC wants to thank you for a great year and we wish you success in 2010.

BE NICE TO YOUR SERVER Part of dining etiquette is treating others with decency and respect. It doesn’t stop at the people who are sitting at your table though. Your waiter or waitress deserves to be treated with decency as well. Wait-staff often receive less than respectful treatment from their patrons. Remember a server is there to help make your meal enjoyable. Treat them, as you would like to be treated. Treating others with respect should be a top priority for everyone. Being polite to your waiter or waitress will make you feel better and ensure a better dining experience. Don’t forget to leave a tip!

SPRING BREAK JUNIOR SAILINGScott Melander heads up HYC’s Junior Sailing department with top-notch instructors rated the best on the Island and all certified by the National Sailing Association. Spring Junior Sailing classes are now underway and if you missed this one you still have time to sign up for the Spring Break classes.

Aloha!The Special Events Team welcomes our new HAWAII YACHT CLUB members and hope they take advantage of the wide range of SPECIAL EVENTS offered for your enjoyment and participation.

27TH ANNUAL JR. FISHING TOURNAMENT – Sunday January 31, 2010

One Hundred Forty-five anglers from the Hawaii Yacht Club, Waikiki Yacht Club, Honolulu Police Department Police Activities League (PAL) and Police Explorers Program, Palama Selttlement, and Kuhio Park Terrace thank the skippers for the opportunity of enjoying a morning of fishing aboard some of Hawaii’s GREAT fishing yachts. They enjoyed the experience of yelling…YOU HOOKED A BIG ONE …. weighing their fish aboard the vessel and waving good bye to their catch as their catch was released back into the beautiful blue Pacific for next year’s tournament.

Angler and skipper registration took place at Hawaii Yacht Club, along with the angler and skipper briefings. Rods, reels, bait, hooks and angler life jackets were handed out while boarding fishing vessels. All anglers are winners and received a prize at the trophy presentation at the Waikiki Yacht Club. Staff Commodore Miles Anderson was on hand to photograph the event which will soon be placed on the HYC website. Honolulu Police Department Police Explorers were on hand to assist with rods and reels, printing photos of the days catch, retrieving life vests, assisting with the BBQ,

and last but not least clean up. Our new participants from the Honolulu Police Department were a great addition to the event. The Hawaii Yacht Club looks forward to their participation in future events.

There were several exciting changes which evolved from a planning session: Jeff Lansdown, Wikoliana Educational Excursions joined us this year, educating angler’s about ocean awareness and the importance of releasing their fish…The Pro’s call it….”Tag and Release”. Ninth grade students from St. Andrews Priory School boarded fishing vessels to take photos of angler’s with their fish, weigh the fish, and return the fish back to the beautiful blue Pacific. While the fish were being tallied for the trophy presentation, swimming, games and a BBQ were part of the afternoon’s events at Waikiki Yacht Club. The WYC Shuttle was available and ran between the clubs.

Officer Frank Everette is to be thanked for bringing 38 children from the Police Activities League and Larry Sweets of Palama Settlement for bringing 15 under privileged children. The committee would like to thank founders Jim O’Hara and Stan Thornton for providing children a fishing opportunity and a day of “Fun ‘n’ The Sun”. It indeed was a great tournament!

In memory of Jeanette Worthy, we would like to inform her many friends at the Hawaii Yacht Club of herpassing on Friday, Jan. 29, 2010. She passed away at UCLA Medical Center, Santa Monica after a battle ofserious illnesses. She is survived by her husband, Dudley Worthy, her children Lyn Hebert, Leigh Ching andBrian Cox. 7 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held in Las Vegas on Sat.,Feb. 6 at the American Legion Hall. A memorial service and scattering of ashes will be held in Hawaii at a future date.

The HYC Cruising and Voyaging Society is a loosely knit group of people who enjoy socializing, eating, drinking and messing about in boats. “Getting out there” is our theme, whether it is

for an afternoon whale watch or three months in Hanalei. Too many boats sit floating at the dock and the Cruising and Voyaging Society encourages boaters to drop the lines and head out for fun and adventure

Taking advantage of a window of good weather, four boats made the channel crossing over to Hale‘olono Harbor on Molokai for the long Presidents’ Day weekend from Feb. 12 to Feb. 15. Millie D with Bill Beadle & Barb Dove, and Swan Song, with Dave Cooper & Nancy Terrell left on Friday Feb 12. They were followed on Saturday by Alchemy, skipper Leon Fedenczuk and his crew Mitch and Dottie Bates, and Seamar Mhuire skippered by Ted Murphy and his crew Jim Murphy (not related). They enjoyed a quiet anchorage with beautiful sunsets, shared good food (Bill caught two fine mahi mahi) and beverages under spectacular starlit skies, in the company of fellow cruisers. On Monday most of the group had a fast and uneventful voyage home to Ala Wai with plenty of whale-spotting, leaving Swan Song to enjoy one more day. Lucky them!

On Feb. 4th, long-time Yacht Club member Jerry Williams showed and narrated for us a short movie presentation of the Polynesian voyage he and his wife Jas took 15 years ago, and talked about some of the changes which have occurred since then. Also, at our regular February 17th meeting, we had an informative speaker Greg Pack, of Spectrum Engineering, who is the instructor of the popular “Diesel in a Day” classes. Greg gave a brief overview of marine diesel engines and their maintenance, and some of the problems which can be encountered by boaters. Greg used light humor to make what could have been a dry presentation interesting and entertaining.

Our meeting for March will be on Wed. March 17, (Happy St. Patrick’s Day) at 6:00 pm on the lower deck., followed at 6:30 by a local cruiser, Erwin “Tik”, who will share his experiences cruising from Hawaii to Canada, Mexico, the Galapagos, Easter Island, Marquesas, and back.
