Virtual learning puts pharmacy students in the picture

Pharmacy students are stepping into virtual

hospital and community pharmacies through an

innovative training room.

The new interactive teaching tool at Griffith

University’s Gold Coast campus projects high-

definition panoramic interactive images onto

three large whiteboard walls in a purpose-de-

signed training room.

Dr Gary Grant, deputy head of learning and

teaching from the School of Pharmacy, said the

images enable students to navigate their way

through the inside of a range of pharmacy set-

tings.

“We can, for example, teach someone about

cardiovascular drugs - we can go to a cardiovas-

cular ward, open the cardiovascular treatment

room and have a look at the drugs that are actu-

ally in that treatment room,” he said.

“We call it the window to the world. We in-

tend to capture any setting that our students go

out to on placement.

“We will be able to get content from our

overseas placements or rural placements, local

placements, that could be the setting itself or the

actual workplace environment where those stu-

dents are being placed.

“If I want to navigate through the room, I can

actually drag the room around and the whole

front view will drift with where you pull your

mouse. It’s not static imagery, it’s live.

“We can pull up a product and start writ-

ing notes all around the product, because it is a

whiteboard that we are actually projecting onto,

it’s a dual purpose projection whiteboard.”

Dr Grant said the images create an “aug-

mented reality”.

“So, for example, if we look at a box of medi-

cines, we will be able to identify that box with

a mobile app and it actually leads students to

learning activities.”

Dr Grant said the virtual learning environ-

ment is designed to place learning in context for

pharmacy students.

“Whatever the experience that we are trying

to create through lecture, we can actually show

and then talk of, which I think is an exceptionally

valuable tool,” he said.

“Being able to walk over to a pharmacy shelf

and have a look at exactly what is stocked in that

pharmacy shelf and then educate off the actual

product shelf is something that we’ve only been

able to do through placements.”

The technology is able to prepare students

for their placements, enabling them to have a

better on-site experience, Dr Grant said.

“For the first two years, we see it as being

almost a pre-placement education tool,” he said.

“By the time they actually go on placement,

they’re not getting sort of inducted to the basic

layout of a pharmacy or to what the structure

of a pharmacy looks like and works like - they

are already aware of that and already at the point

of being able to work with getting to the patient

contact point rather than just being inducted to

the facility.”

Students are also able to interact with virtual

patients in any pharmacy environment relevant

to their work-integrated learning needs.

“As we transition to third and fourth years,

there’s this shift from place and product through

to really the patient interaction and the services

that we deliver,” Dr Grant said.

“Although the environment will be there, it’s

not about the environment any more, it’s really

about the simulated activities that they do in that

environment.”

Launched earlier this week, the cutting-edge

facility can also be adapted for students across

all health disciplines.

Ben has sights set on critical care nursing career

Ben Lewinsohn was in his third year of study-

ing electrical engineering when he realised

he wanted more personal interaction in his ca-

reer.

Now at the age of 22, Ben is studying to

become a nurse and hopes to one day become

a nurse leader in critical care and emergency

nursing.

“A lot of people are shocked

when I tell them that I study

nursing,” he said.

“However, the stere-

otype of a female nurse

is disappearing as

more men realise the

benefits of the job.

“I study nursing

because I want to

help and take care of

people.”

Originally from

Sydney, Ben said criti-

cal care and emergency

nursing interested him as it’s a

fast-paced and often unpredictable

working environment.

“You can see the change quite rapidly (in pa-

tients) at some points, whether that’s good to

bad or bad to good,” he said.

“Although I am still quite new at my nurs-

ing career and profession, it is an area that gives

you a lot of experience, it teaches you about a

lot of different areas of the body of the person,

of them holistically, (and) it opens the doors to

work rurally or in other sectors of the commu-

nity.”

Ben was one of four men awarded Diploma

of Enrolled Nursing scholarships at Northern

Sydney Institute, out of 10 scholarships, and is

now studying his two-year Bachelor of Nursing.

Glenys Wensor, a registered nurse and

head teacher of nursing at Northern Sydney

Institute, said increasing numbers of men are

realising the benefits of a career in nursing.

Ms Wensor, a nurse educator of more than

30 years, said nursing offers stability of em-

ployment and a wide range of employment

options.

“There are places other than

general medical wards -

there’s ICU, there’s emer-

gency, there’s theatres

and all of our students

obviously go through

all of those areas,”

she said.

“There is the op-

portunity of working

in a team, to have

quite a lot of respon-

sibility, and also I think

they have the ability to

influence the outcomes

of care, which I think is pretty

important and that sort of increases

job satisfaction with feedback from patients.

“Obviously there’s the flexibility of a nurs-

ing qualification, it’s a very portable qualifica-

tion, there’s national recognition - people can

work overseas and they can work in all differ-

ent areas.”

Registration data from the Australian Health

Practitioner and Regulation Agency (AHPRA)

shows more than 10 per cent of men, or 36,881

males, make up Australia’s 351,507-strong

nursing and midwifery workforce.

Of those in the nursing profession, 5631

are enrolled nurses, 30,105 are registered nurs-

es, and 600 are enrolled nurses and registered

nurses.

In the nursing and midwifery profession,

one male is registered as an enrolled nurse and

533 are registered nurses, while in midwifery, 11

are registered as midwives.

New South Wales is home to the greatest

number of male nurses, with 11,386, followed

by Victoria with 9077, Queensland with 6796,

South Australia with 3303, Western Australia

with 3108, while Tasmania has 920 male nurses,

the ACT has 592, the Northern Territory has 581,

and 1118 are listed as having no principal place

of practice.

Ms Wensor said nursing is an ideal career

choice for both men and women.

“It is not a job for the faint-hearted,” she said.

“Men can bring unique skills and perspec-

tives to the job. They don’t always realise the re-

sponsibility and importance of a nurse’s role in a

hospital or care facility.”

Ms Wensor said male nurses are beneficial

to the workplace environment and, most impor-

tantly, are an asset to their patients.

“Some male patients probably do feel more

comfortable discussing various things like re-

productive health and those sorts of things with

males,” she said.

“I think that’s an important aspect of looking

after our patients holistically.”

Calls for advanced physiotherapy roles in SA reforms

Physiotherapists in advanced and extended

practice roles working in emergency depart-

ments and in elective surgery settings should be

considered as part of South Australia’s health re-

forms, according to the Australian Physiotherapy

Association (APA).

In its submission to the South Australian

Government’s Transforming Health plan,

the peak physiotherapy body high-

lights the work of physiothera-

pists in EDs, from assessing

patients and treating mi-

nor injuries to prescrib-

ing medications.

“We’re disap-

pointed the Trans-

forming Health plan

had little focus on

the skills and exper-

tise of physiotherapists

and other health prac-

titioners in advanced and

extended practice roles,”

APA president Marcus Dripps

said.

“Advanced scope physiotherapists working

in the emergency department have been proven

to be effective in reducing wait times and freeing

up medical specialists to manage more serious

life-threatening presentations.”

The government has received about 2000

submissions to its proposed reforms, which out-

line a super emergency department at the new

Royal Adelaide Hospital.

The plan includes transforming the Flinders

and Lyell McEwin hospitals into ‘super sites’ for

major emergencies with 24/7 senior medical

staff, while the blueprint recommends scaling

down emergency services at the Queen Eliza-

beth and Modbury hospitals.

Under the plan, the Repatriation General

Hospital and Hampstead Rehabilitation Centre

face closure, with their rehabilitation services to

be shifted to other hospitals.

Noarlunga Hospital has been earmarked

to become the state’s centre for single day

elective surgery and an expert palli-

ative care site, while The Queen

Elizabeth hospital will move

to focus on multi-day

elective surgery.

The government

also proposes es-

tablishing a walk-in

emergency clinic at

Noarlunga Hospital,

on the site of the GP

Plus Super Clinic.

In its submission,

the APA has called for ad-

vanced and extended scope

roles for physiotherapists and

allied health practitioners in rehabili-

tation, such as in managing hypertonicity/spas-

ticity with Botox injections.

The association suggests the government

also consider a single state-wide point of en-

try for elective surgery, where physiothera-

pists working in advanced or extended scope

roles can carry out initial triaging of referrals for

musculoskeletal conditions and face-to-face

screening and assessment of some patients.

Virtual learning puts pharmacy students in the picture

Pharmacy students are stepping into virtual

hospital and community pharmacies through an

innovative training room.

The new interactive teaching tool at Griffith

University’s Gold Coast campus projects high-

definition panoramic interactive images onto

three large whiteboard walls in a purpose-de-

signed training room.

Dr Gary Grant, deputy head of learning and

teaching from the School of Pharmacy, said the

images enable students to navigate their way

through the inside of a range of pharmacy set-

tings.

“We can, for example, teach someone about

cardiovascular drugs - we can go to a cardiovas-

cular ward, open the cardiovascular treatment

room and have a look at the drugs that are actu-

ally in that treatment room,” he said.

“We call it the window to the world. We in-

tend to capture any setting that our students go

out to on placement.

“We will be able to get content from our

overseas placements or rural placements, local

placements, that could be the setting itself or the

actual workplace environment where those stu-

dents are being placed.

“If I want to navigate through the room, I can

actually drag the room around and the whole

front view will drift with where you pull your

mouse. It’s not static imagery, it’s live.

“We can pull up a product and start writ-

ing notes all around the product, because it is a

whiteboard that we are actually projecting onto,

it’s a dual purpose projection whiteboard.”

Dr Grant said the images create an “aug-

mented reality”.

“So, for example, if we look at a box of medi-

cines, we will be able to identify that box with

a mobile app and it actually leads students to

learning activities.”

Dr Grant said the virtual learning environ-

ment is designed to place learning in context for

pharmacy students.

“Whatever the experience that we are trying

to create through lecture, we can actually show

and then talk of, which I think is an exceptionally

valuable tool,” he said.

“Being able to walk over to a pharmacy shelf

and have a look at exactly what is stocked in that

pharmacy shelf and then educate off the actual

product shelf is something that we’ve only been

able to do through placements.”

The technology is able to prepare students

for their placements, enabling them to have a

better on-site experience, Dr Grant said.

“For the first two years, we see it as being

almost a pre-placement education tool,” he said.

“By the time they actually go on placement,

they’re not getting sort of inducted to the basic

layout of a pharmacy or to what the structure

of a pharmacy looks like and works like - they

are already aware of that and already at the point

of being able to work with getting to the patient

contact point rather than just being inducted to

the facility.”

Students are also able to interact with virtual

patients in any pharmacy environment relevant

to their work-integrated learning needs.

“As we transition to third and fourth years,

there’s this shift from place and product through

to really the patient interaction and the services

that we deliver,” Dr Grant said.

“Although the environment will be there, it’s

not about the environment any more, it’s really

Looking for Nurses, Paramedics and Pathology Collectors

Virtual learning puts pharmacy students in the picture

Pharmacy students are stepping into virtual

hospital and community pharmacies through an

innovative training room.

The new interactive teaching tool at Griffith

University’s Gold Coast campus projects high-

definition panoramic interactive images onto

three large whiteboard walls in a purpose-de-

signed training room.

Dr Gary Grant, deputy head of learning and

teaching from the School of Pharmacy, said the

images enable students to navigate their way

through the inside of a range of pharmacy set-

tings.

“We can, for example, teach someone about

cardiovascular drugs - we can go to a cardiovas-

cular ward, open the cardiovascular treatment

room and have a look at the drugs that are actu-

ally in that treatment room,” he said.

“We call it the window to the world. We in-

tend to capture any setting that our students go

out to on placement.

“We will be able to get content from our

overseas placements or rural placements, local

placements, that could be the setting itself or the

actual workplace environment where those stu-

dents are being placed.

“If I want to navigate through the room, I can

actually drag the room around and the whole

front view will drift with where you pull your

mouse. It’s not static imagery, it’s live.

“We can pull up a product and start writ-

ing notes all around the product, because it is a

whiteboard that we are actually projecting onto,

it’s a dual purpose projection whiteboard.”

Dr Grant said the images create an “aug-

mented reality”.

“So, for example, if we look at a box of medi-

cines, we will be able to identify that box with

a mobile app and it actually leads students to

learning activities.”

Dr Grant said the virtual learning environ-

ment is designed to place learning in context for

pharmacy students.

“Whatever the experience that we are trying

to create through lecture, we can actually show

and then talk of, which I think is an exceptionally

valuable tool,” he said.

“Being able to walk over to a pharmacy shelf

and have a look at exactly what is stocked in that

pharmacy shelf and then educate off the actual

product shelf is something that we’ve only been

able to do through placements.”

The technology is able to prepare students

for their placements, enabling them to have a

better on-site experience, Dr Grant said.

“For the first two years, we see it as being

almost a pre-placement education tool,” he said.

“By the time they actually go on placement,

they’re not getting sort of inducted to the basic

layout of a pharmacy or to what the structure

of a pharmacy looks like and works like - they

are already aware of that and already at the point

of being able to work with getting to the patient

contact point rather than just being inducted to

the facility.”

Students are also able to interact with virtual

patients in any pharmacy environment relevant

to their work-integrated learning needs.

“As we transition to third and fourth years,

there’s this shift from place and product through

to really the patient interaction and the services

that we deliver,” Dr Grant said.

“Although the environment will be there, it’s

not about the environment any more, it’s really

about the simulated activities that they do in that

environment.”

Launched earlier this week, the cutting-edge

facility can also be adapted for students across

all health disciplines.

Ben has sights set on critical care nursing career

Ben Lewinsohn was in his third year of study-

ing electrical engineering when he realised

he wanted more personal interaction in his ca-

reer.

Now at the age of 22, Ben is studying to

become a nurse and hopes to one day become

a nurse leader in critical care and emergency

nursing.

“A lot of people are shocked

when I tell them that I study

nursing,” he said.

“However, the stere-

otype of a female nurse

is disappearing as

more men realise the

benefits of the job.

“I study nursing

because I want to

help and take care of

people.”

Originally from

Sydney, Ben said criti-

cal care and emergency

nursing interested him as it’s a

fast-paced and often unpredictable

working environment.

“You can see the change quite rapidly (in pa-

tients) at some points, whether that’s good to

bad or bad to good,” he said.

“Although I am still quite new at my nurs-

ing career and profession, it is an area that gives

you a lot of experience, it teaches you about a

lot of different areas of the body of the person,

of them holistically, (and) it opens the doors to

work rurally or in other sectors of the commu-

nity.”

Ben was one of four men awarded Diploma

of Enrolled Nursing scholarships at Northern

Sydney Institute, out of 10 scholarships, and is

now studying his two-year Bachelor of Nursing.

Glenys Wensor, a registered nurse and

head teacher of nursing at Northern Sydney

Institute, said increasing numbers of men are

realising the benefits of a career in nursing.

Ms Wensor, a nurse educator of more than

30 years, said nursing offers stability of em-

ployment and a wide range of employment

options.

“There are places other than

general medical wards -

there’s ICU, there’s emer-

gency, there’s theatres

and all of our students

obviously go through

all of those areas,”

she said.

“There is the op-

portunity of working

in a team, to have

quite a lot of respon-

sibility, and also I think

they have the ability to

influence the outcomes

of care, which I think is pretty

important and that sort of increases

job satisfaction with feedback from patients.

“Obviously there’s the flexibility of a nurs-

ing qualification, it’s a very portable qualifica-

tion, there’s national recognition - people can

work overseas and they can work in all differ-

ent areas.”

Registration data from the Australian Health

Practitioner and Regulation Agency (AHPRA)

shows more than 10 per cent of men, or 36,881

males, make up Australia’s 351,507-strong

nursing and midwifery workforce.

Of those in the nursing profession, 5631

are enrolled nurses, 30,105 are registered nurs-

es, and 600 are enrolled nurses and registered

nurses.

In the nursing and midwifery profession,

one male is registered as an enrolled nurse and

533 are registered nurses, while in midwifery, 11

are registered as midwives.

New South Wales is home to the greatest

number of male nurses, with 11,386, followed

by Victoria with 9077, Queensland with 6796,

South Australia with 3303, Western Australia

with 3108, while Tasmania has 920 male nurses,

the ACT has 592, the Northern Territory has 581,

and 1118 are listed as having no principal place

of practice.

Ms Wensor said nursing is an ideal career

choice for both men and women.

“It is not a job for the faint-hearted,” she said.

“Men can bring unique skills and perspec-

tives to the job. They don’t always realise the re-

sponsibility and importance of a nurse’s role in a

hospital or care facility.”

Ms Wensor said male nurses are beneficial

to the workplace environment and, most impor-

tantly, are an asset to their patients.

“Some male patients probably do feel more

comfortable discussing various things like re-

productive health and those sorts of things with

males,” she said.

“I think that’s an important aspect of looking

after our patients holistically.”

Calls for advanced physiotherapy roles in SA reforms

Physiotherapists in advanced and extended

practice roles working in emergency depart-

ments and in elective surgery settings should be

considered as part of South Australia’s health re-

forms, according to the Australian Physiotherapy

Association (APA).

In its submission to the South Australian

Government’s Transforming Health plan,

the peak physiotherapy body high-

lights the work of physiothera-

pists in EDs, from assessing

patients and treating mi-

nor injuries to prescrib-

ing medications.

“We’re disap-

pointed the Trans-

forming Health plan

had little focus on

the skills and exper-

tise of physiotherapists

and other health prac-

titioners in advanced and

extended practice roles,”

APA president Marcus Dripps

said.

“Advanced scope physiotherapists working

in the emergency department have been proven

to be effective in reducing wait times and freeing

up medical specialists to manage more serious

life-threatening presentations.”

The government has received about 2000

submissions to its proposed reforms, which out-

line a super emergency department at the new

Royal Adelaide Hospital.

The plan includes transforming the Flinders

and Lyell McEwin hospitals into ‘super sites’ for

major emergencies with 24/7 senior medical

staff, while the blueprint recommends scaling

down emergency services at the Queen Eliza-

beth and Modbury hospitals.

Under the plan, the Repatriation General

Hospital and Hampstead Rehabilitation Centre

face closure, with their rehabilitation services to

be shifted to other hospitals.

Noarlunga Hospital has been earmarked

to become the state’s centre for single day

elective surgery and an expert palli-

ative care site, while The Queen

Elizabeth hospital will move

to focus on multi-day

elective surgery.

The government

also proposes es-

tablishing a walk-in

emergency clinic at

Noarlunga Hospital,

on the site of the GP

Plus Super Clinic.

In its submission,

the APA has called for ad-

vanced and extended scope

roles for physiotherapists and

allied health practitioners in rehabili-

tation, such as in managing hypertonicity/spas-

ticity with Botox injections.

The association suggests the government

also consider a single state-wide point of en-

try for elective surgery, where physiothera-

pists working in advanced or extended scope

roles can carry out initial triaging of referrals for

musculoskeletal conditions and face-to-face

screening and assessment of some patients.

teaching from the School of Pharmacy, said the

images enable students to navigate their way

through the inside of a range of pharmacy set-

tings.

“We can, for example, teach someone about

cardiovascular drugs - we can go to a cardiovas-

cular ward, open the cardiovascular treatment

room and have a look at the drugs that are actu-

ally in that treatment room,” he said.

“We call it the window to the world. We in-

tend to capture any setting that our students go

out to on placement.

“We will be able to get content from our

overseas placements or rural placements, local

placements, that could be the setting itself or the

actual workplace environment where those stu-

dents are being placed.

“If I want to navigate through the room, I can

actually drag the room around and the whole

front view will drift with where you pull your

mouse. It’s not static imagery, it’s live.

“We can pull up a product and start writ-

ing notes all around the product, because it is a

whiteboard that we are actually projecting onto,

it’s a dual purpose projection whiteboard.”

Dr Grant said the images create an “aug-

mented reality”.

“So, for example, if we look at a box of medi-

cines, we will be able to identify that box with

a mobile app and it actually leads students to

learning activities.”

Dr Grant said the virtual learning environ-

ment is designed to place learning in context for

pharmacy students.

“Whatever the experience that we are trying

to create through lecture, we can actually show

and then talk of, which I think is an exceptionally

valuable tool,” he said.

“Being able to walk over to a pharmacy shelf

and have a look at exactly what is stocked in that

pharmacy shelf and then educate off the actual

product shelf is something that we’ve only been

able to do through placements.”

The technology is able to prepare students

for their placements, enabling them to have a

better on-site experience, Dr Grant said.

“For the first two years, we see it as being

almost a pre-placement education tool,” he said.

“By the time they actually go on placement,

they’re not getting sort of inducted to the basic

layout of a pharmacy or to what the structure

of a pharmacy looks like and works like - they

are already aware of that and already at the point

of being able to work with getting to the patient

contact point rather than just being inducted to

the facility.”

Students are also able to interact with virtual

patients in any pharmacy environment relevant

to their work-integrated learning needs.

“As we transition to third and fourth years,

there’s this shift from place and product through

to really the patient interaction and the services

that we deliver,” Dr Grant said.

“Although the environment will be there, it’s

not about the environment any more, it’s really

about the simulated activities that they do in that

environment.”

Launched earlier this week, the cutting-edge

facility can also be adapted for students across

all health disciplines.

Ben has sights set on critical care nursing career

Ben Lewinsohn was in his third year of study-

ing electrical engineering when he realised

he wanted more personal interaction in his ca-

reer.

Now at the age of 22, Ben is studying to

become a nurse and hopes to one day become

a nurse leader in critical care and emergency

nursing.

“A lot of people are shocked

when I tell them that I study

nursing,” he said.

“However, the stere-

otype of a female nurse

is disappearing as

more men realise the

benefits of the job.

“I study nursing

because I want to

help and take care of

people.”

Originally from

Sydney, Ben said criti-

cal care and emergency

nursing interested him as it’s a

fast-paced and often unpredictable

working environment.

“You can see the change quite rapidly (in pa-

tients) at some points, whether that’s good to

bad or bad to good,” he said.

“Although I am still quite new at my nurs-

ing career and profession, it is an area that gives

you a lot of experience, it teaches you about a

lot of different areas of the body of the person,

of them holistically, (and) it opens the doors to

work rurally or in other sectors of the commu-

nity.”

Ben was one of four men awarded Diploma

of Enrolled Nursing scholarships at Northern

Sydney Institute, out of 10 scholarships, and is

now studying his two-year Bachelor of Nursing.

Glenys Wensor, a registered nurse and

head teacher of nursing at Northern Sydney

Institute, said increasing numbers of men are

realising the benefits of a career in nursing.

Ms Wensor, a nurse educator of more than

30 years, said nursing offers stability of em-

ployment and a wide range of employment

options.

“There are places other than

general medical wards -

there’s ICU, there’s emer-

gency, there’s theatres

and all of our students

obviously go through

all of those areas,”

she said.

“There is the op-

portunity of working

in a team, to have

quite a lot of respon-

sibility, and also I think

they have the ability to

influence the outcomes

of care, which I think is pretty

important and that sort of increases

job satisfaction with feedback from patients.

“Obviously there’s the flexibility of a nurs-

ing qualification, it’s a very portable qualifica-

tion, there’s national recognition - people can

work overseas and they can work in all differ-

ent areas.”

Registration data from the Australian Health

Practitioner and Regulation Agency (AHPRA)

shows more than 10 per cent of men, or 36,881

males, make up Australia’s 351,507-strong

nursing and midwifery workforce.

Of those in the nursing profession, 5631

are enrolled nurses, 30,105 are registered nurs-

es, and 600 are enrolled nurses and registered

nurses.

In the nursing and midwifery profession,

one male is registered as an enrolled nurse and

533 are registered nurses, while in midwifery, 11

are registered as midwives.

New South Wales is home to the greatest

number of male nurses, with 11,386, followed

by Victoria with 9077, Queensland with 6796,

South Australia with 3303, Western Australia

with 3108, while Tasmania has 920 male nurses,

the ACT has 592, the Northern Territory has 581,

and 1118 are listed as having no principal place

of practice.

Ms Wensor said nursing is an ideal career

choice for both men and women.

“It is not a job for the faint-hearted,” she said.

“Men can bring unique skills and perspec-

tives to the job. They don’t always realise the re-

sponsibility and importance of a nurse’s role in a

hospital or care facility.”

Ms Wensor said male nurses are beneficial

to the workplace environment and, most impor-

tantly, are an asset to their patients.

“Some male patients probably do feel more

comfortable discussing various things like re-

productive health and those sorts of things with

males,” she said.

“I think that’s an important aspect of looking

after our patients holistically.”

Calls for advanced physiotherapy roles in SA reforms

Physiotherapists in advanced and extended

practice roles working in emergency depart-

ments and in elective surgery settings should be

considered as part of South Australia’s health re-

forms, according to the Australian Physiotherapy

Association (APA).

In its submission to the South Australian

Government’s Transforming Health plan,

the peak physiotherapy body high-

lights the work of physiothera-

pists in EDs, from assessing

patients and treating mi-

nor injuries to prescrib-

ing medications.

“We’re disap-

pointed the Trans-

forming Health plan

had little focus on

the skills and exper-

tise of physiotherapists

and other health prac-

titioners in advanced and

extended practice roles,”

APA president Marcus Dripps

said.

“Advanced scope physiotherapists working

in the emergency department have been proven

to be effective in reducing wait times and freeing

up medical specialists to manage more serious

life-threatening presentations.”

The government has received about 2000

submissions to its proposed reforms, which out-

line a super emergency department at the new

Royal Adelaide Hospital.

The plan includes transforming the Flinders

and Lyell McEwin hospitals into ‘super sites’ for

major emergencies with 24/7 senior medical

staff, while the blueprint recommends scaling

down emergency services at the Queen Eliza-

beth and Modbury hospitals.

Under the plan, the Repatriation General

Hospital and Hampstead Rehabilitation Centre

face closure, with their rehabilitation services to

be shifted to other hospitals.

Noarlunga Hospital has been earmarked

to become the state’s centre for single day

elective surgery and an expert palli-

ative care site, while The Queen

Elizabeth hospital will move

to focus on multi-day

elective surgery.

The government

also proposes es-

tablishing a walk-in

emergency clinic at

Noarlunga Hospital,

on the site of the GP

Plus Super Clinic.

In its submission,

the APA has called for ad-

vanced and extended scope

roles for physiotherapists and

allied health practitioners in rehabili-

tation, such as in managing hypertonicity/spas-

ticity with Botox injections.

The association suggests the government

also consider a single state-wide point of en-

try for elective surgery, where physiothera-

pists working in advanced or extended scope

roles can carry out initial triaging of referrals for

musculoskeletal conditions and face-to-face

screening and assessment of some patients.
